Could see the difference in your face from the 182 when you were describing road noise etc then you booted it and your face lit up 😊 This is what the older hot hatches bring that I feel like more modern ones don’t. Maybe have the better interior with insulation to stop the road noise but it takes something away from the driving. But I agree, 182 is a weekender. Wouldn’t want it for a daily. But then I don’t think I would chose a 197 for a daily either
@@lindseyscott3011 the switch from 182 to 197 was the transition period from “old school” to “modern” hatch. Absolutely agree with everything you’ve wrote. Loved them both, but cars like the 182 died many years ago and for that reason I love it that little bit more!
Very nice video, I test drove both back to back before buying my 182 she only had 55k on the clock and having owned and daily driven her for the past 7 years your analysis is on point. Obviously the 197 in the vid is mapped and has an exhaust which sounds cracking but we’re not here to compare noise, that doesn’t change the fact that the 197 is the more solidly built car, the step up in build quality between the two is a next level, but there’s no hardship adding a bit of sound deadening and greasing the contact patches on the plastics, it does make the experience a lot more enjoyable because the rattles and squeaks are catastrophically bad ! If people are wondering the 182 is the faster car the power delivery is addicting getting a nice shove at 5k rpm, the steering wheel is too big and bad build quality imo so I have a small omp with custom switches. If driven normally, mpg should be 25-30 in town, and 40+ on the motorway at 70mph. Best over a tank I’ve seen is 54mpg that was driving at 55mph through France. Engine is solid and easy enough to work on, mines currently on 161k. Thanks again for the video, brilliant content !!

I've owned all rs clio models and the 197,200,has much better handling and brakes, more exciting engine and looks great, pick these over the 182 all day
Hello BeeCee, admittedly looks are subjective but I do have to agree a liquid yellow 197 is a fantastic looking car even though I do find the quirky « retro » 182 a great looking car too. You are right that out of the box the 197,200 is a better handling car but I find that a well setup 182 is more confidence inspiring and engaging, I personally love the way the 182 delivers its power. Both cars running the same upgrades (better bushes, dog bone and road pads for the road) would be hard to separate them but I do find the 182 more communicatif compared to the newer 197, maybe that’s because it’s slightly lighter ?? but then again mods mean money and that defeats the object. If someone is in the market for a sporty clio the 197 is the better all rounder, but for driving pleasure and originality I just can’t part with the 182. It’s done all that I’ve asked from her and always leaves me with a smile 👍
Thanks for the video!! I have been driving classic Mini for 34 years (and nothing else) until back 2018 where I had grown in love with the look of the Clio 172 (phase 1). Impossible to find in Denmark, so I had my mechanic with my to pick one up in Holland for just 2500 Euros. I am so happy with it. It turned out to have a bigger exhaust and other cams, so it's quite quick on top of the look that I fell in love with at first. I don't fancy the triangular phase 2 headlights, so it gotta be a phase 1 for me.
Been waiting for this one Rich and it didn’t disappoint! Still torn between the two myself if I’m honest but I think you’re right, that if it’s just a weekend rip you’re looking for, then a 182 makes all the sense. Really enjoying the channel but always a particular soft spot for the RS content. Keep it coming mate! 👍
Thank you for a really well balanced review. For me The 182 versus the 197 is very much a horses for courses debate. Its hard to argue about the evolution of the RS Clios, the MK3 is much more grown up. However despite its many faults I still love the 182.
I would also agree with the point you make about one or two car ownership. I don't think the 182 is an everyday car. I find mine hateful to drive in towns or cities, but a joy to drive down a B road.
I had a standard 197 for about 6 months a few years ago, and a 182 that I have now. There's so much wrong and cheap and outdated with the 182, but I much prefer it to the 197. I've had it for 7 years, it really is a great drive, not getting rid any time soon.
I have both a 172 cup and a mk3 200, the 200 is the better car, engine revs more, 6speed gearbox is better to use and close ratios. The difference is anybody can be fast in a 200. 172 involves a bit of drive (mine doenst have abs or ac , jean ragnotto version)

I've just sold my 182 after 6 years and buying a 200 last year. They have both broken down badly. The similarities are uncanny😂. I see the eml shining on the 197 in the video🙄.

182 for me. It’s like a perfect blend of having the comfort of power steering, ABS etc but still has that feeling of a 90’s hot hatch.
