Having Jonathan have no words before death was good as it was a real thing that happens. A heart attack won't wait. It doesn't give you mercy. It doesn't allow for last words. The episode was so good because it gives psychologically realistic behaviors in many scenes. Clark's first step toward his destiny was learning that his powers cannot save everyone. It truly is his hardest lesson. This episode gets 3 roses from me.
"Clark, a heart beats only so many times in a life. Your father used his more than anyone I know". 😭😭😭 The best line to ever sum up Smallville's Jonathan Kent. John Schneider's portrayal will be forever iconic and he can take heart in creating one of the best fathers in television history. After Jonathan died, the show lost its moral compass. Also his delivery during the fatal moment was next level: The way he twitches when the heart attack begins, the tired walking, the collapse, the loving way he looks at Martha and Clark one last time... The guy should have won an award for this! You have to bring him back to Talkville one more time, guys!
That final scene: with the snow - and it’s striking contrast against the black attire of the funeral guests, that devastating Peter Gabriel song building ominously in the background, the imagery of the angel statues, and the perfectly framed and paced shots of the main characters and all of their subtle gestures and interactions - no words were needed but so much was communicated. Perfect. Also, a small detail in this great episode that was powerful but easy to miss: The scene at the Talon where Jonathan helps put Martha’s necklace on is agonisingly mirrored later at the Kent Farm when the grieving Clark takes his place in helping his mother put on that same necklace. Beautiful. 🌹🌹🌹
One of the greatest episodes of all time. Also it is extra meaningful to me. My father passed when I was 18. This episode actually premiered just a few months after. I was ultra emotional when I watched it. And Clark's journey throughout the rest of the season really mirrored mine in a lot of ways. Smallville literally helped me heal from a terrible time in my life.
I literally had the same thing happen to me when I was 18yrs old and this episode was the first one I ever saw of the show and it helped me grieve my loss and I related to Clark in so many ways. This is why Smallville is my favorite show, it made me the man I am today. Thank you for sharing this story, it’s nice ti know I was not alone having a similar experience during this difficult time. Long live Smallville!!!
@@ryanpermison8003 Oh wow, thanks Ryan. Thats the power of film and television when done right. And I got my love for film and superheroes from my Dad so it all just came together.
@@Ambereigh Smallville also didn't need Lana to be at the center of Clark's story all the time either. By season 5, high school is over, and it's time to say goodbye to Lana. You can't have her detracting from Clark's Superman storyline or from Chloe and Lois.
😢 Jonathan‘s death is the starting point of losing the Kent‘s home/farm! Filming at the Kent‘s gave so much warmth to the show, I miss that in the later seasons!
@@ramonaengels9277 It may have been used less and less as the story started to revolve more and more around Metropolis, but it still remained a major location for the series with a lot of key moments that took place there. Clark still owned and maintained it after Martha moved away since he lived there with Lois.
yeah Schneider's performance throughout was flawless. the look on Jonathan's face as he's processing Clark's news and how he instinctively wanted to over-parent but pulls back cuz of Martha's reaction. and he's so measured during his scene w John Glover 👏 and the death scene was perfection.
I've loved Superman my whole life. Grew up on a farm just like Clark, only child, etc. My dad passed away just a few months before this episode aired; watching Clark grieve the loss of his father helped me get through my grief as well and made me feel less alone. I'll always be thankful for that.
This episode is filled with emotional moments, including that confrontation with Lionel and the heartbreaking conclusion. It really marks a turning point in the series, affecting Clark's relationships and his journey. The funeral scene in the snow is probably one of the most iconic scenes in all of Smallville.
The grand 100th episode milestone is here. Such an epic one this was. With many SUPER reveals, intense and heartbreaking moments. Clark flying in the Fortress with Lana, then proposing to her is one of the most historic in the series. Lana dying in the car accident, one of the most emotionally intense for Clark. Even in the Fortress scene with Jor-El, never seen him so heartbroken and distraught. But also with Jonathan's death. Whose funeral is one of the most saddest in the series. But, also so beautifully shot and scored. The way Martha assured Clark that he was a man who his father admired and could be proud of, as well as look up too was very touching. The acting was phenomenal from everyone in this one😀😀😀🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
This is the one episode I give 3 roses 🌹 the fact that Clark took the risk to turn back time to save Lana knowing somebody else would leave, is such a heartbreaking moment. Then to later find out that the one leaving is his own dad. Clark must feel horrible. At the end, he lost the girl he loves and his father. Great episode!
@@TalkVillePodcasti think Promise in season 6 is also a 3 rose 🌹🌹🌹 episode for me. I loved Lexmas and Reckoning so much and I'm glad you 3 did too. I hope you love that one when you get to it.
John Scheider's acting - great Anette O'Toole's acting - great Tom Welling's acting - great Michael Rosenbaum's acting - great Kristin Kreuk's acting - great Nuff said.
1:00:28 @Tom - The caller was implying that since it was stated that Clark would lose someone else he loves dearly, Lois being in danger at all (especially the first threatened!) implies that he already loves her dearly, thus hinting at their future romance.
Correction: Lois & Clark had Jonathan live. For never telling Lana his secret, Clark was very quick to disregard the consequences of having her live. Anyone notice that when Lana dies, Jonathan is in the traffic of onlookers and comforting Clark prevents him from going to the barn to meet Lionel? After the time switch, Jonathan is seen continuing on the road to the barn after Clark stops the bus.
@@tmntaddict they really do! Both Lois & Clark and Smallville had the two best versions of Clark’s parents and the two best versions of Lex Luthor, in my opinion.
❤ the strong ties to Superman The Movie, honoring Jonathan dying of heart attack (and not some ridiculous tornado 🙄) but in a way that shows Jonathan protecting his family w his last breath💔 😭
RECKONING has to be one of the best ever Smallville episodes, such a great story that was brilliantly played by all involved. Fantastic Talkville episode and it was terrific to have Al Gough & Greg Beeman on, such great insights and recollections from them and Michael & Tom 👍😄
The thing about funeral scenes…it reminds you of every funeral you’ve been to, and it makes you think of your own mortality. Cheers guys! Great episode.
As many times as I've rewatched Smallville, I've only watched this episode twice. It's so powerful and too hard for those who've lost a father or feared losing one. Such an amazing show start to finish. 💔
My dad died a year after the show ended, so I’ve only watched this episode once. It’s too hard and hits too close to home. But it’s a pivotal episode for the series.
In the proposal scene, Clark crushing the coal into a diamondl, then fusing it together with his heatvision was a little nod to Superman 2 where Superman does something similar for Lois in the Fortress after revealing his secret. Nice callback to that. Jonathan and Lionel's scuffle in the barn was such and intense fight. Jonathan always had great determination to protect his family. This moment actually played a very key plotpoint in the 200th episode where Brainiac 5 shows Clark that it wasn't his fault for Jonathan's death.
My dad was a huge Smallville fan, and him and I would have our own little talkville sessions after each episode over coffee during the first run. He’s been gone six years now and this is the first time I’ve seen this episode since he passed. So definitely super emotional for me.
This is the first time I cried on a tv show. I didn’t know much about Superman at the time so papa Kent’s death shocked me, and I wasn’t expecting it to be real😭. Beautiful cinematography, beautiful acting, and beautiful show🙌🏾. Everyone was amazing💯🙌🏾
This episode aired a few days after my 16th birthday and I had not been familiar yet with the trope of Mentor figures dying in the hero's journey. This was my first introduction even before I think Dumbledore died in Harry Potter and I had never seen things like Star Wars and I just wasn't familiar with this genre of Heroes and chosen ones as much as I later became. This was very pivotal to see this episode live and it was so hyped up and I was such a Clana fan and have all these feelings and excitement and joy that he finally told her his secret and they were happy and then all of a sudden this episode is forcing us to grieve in a very real way and very final way a character we were attached to in like a parasocial way as happens with TV shows we get attached to... it was just so good. It definitely wasn't the first time TV shows that made me cry. I remember crying over a book and a death when I was only like 10 years old but I do know that this was very impactful.
Amazing episode of Smallville and Talkville. My dad passed away in July of 2001 of a heart attack, so this episode had a different impact on me. Watching the evolution of Father and Son relationships meant more to me. (Clark and Johnathan Vs. Lex and Lionel) Al was right. That's why I truly embraced the show. Great work, guys. Keep it up. 💯
This episode…I remember watching it live. I remember being stunned and then ecstatic at the beginning. Lana and Clark are so happy, everything is perfect, and she finally knows and accepts Clark. But it’s such a short lived joy. The scene where Lex realizes Lana knows is so good and shows the level of his obsession. The episode puts you through such emotional highs and lows, that I both love and dread it. The show’s never quite the same without Jonathan.
Love. love, love this episode. Michael, in my interview with you on the podcast for Spirit, you asked me if I cried watching Smallville, the funeral scene did it for me, heartwrenching, emotional, visual, memorable. Loved seeing Al and Greg, so many interesting insights, makes me love Smallville even more, if that is even possible, and proves that my emotional investment in this show for so many years, has been well worth it. I'm ALWAYS holding on 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
This is an amazing episode for so many reasons and they hit a lot of them in the podcast. A couple I wanted to mention… - Johnathan helping Martha with her necklace midway through the episode and then her trying and failing to put the same necklace on for the funeral… it’s such an understated moment and puts into perspective so many small things our loved ones do that leave a hole when they are gone… so heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time - And I know we talk about the amazing Annette but her scene with Tom before the funeral always brings me to tears. Both of you did so amazing in that scene All around amazing episode. The guests for the pod were great! Thank you guys so much!! 💚
100th EPISODE 🥳 Thank you guys so much for making it so far! I remember watching this one for the first time, crying because of Lana's death and afterwards crying even more because of Jonathan's. Loved the song "You're beautiful" in the background, especially how the lyric "cause I'll never be with you" resonates with Clark and Lana. Everyone did such a lovely job with this one. Thanks for the great guests and another wonderful episode guys ❤️
I think this is my favourite episode of smallville or up there at least, but I was always disappointed that no one ever mentions this alternate timeline again. Like I would have loved Lana to mention learning about his secret for the first time and Clark saying ‘well second time’ and briefly explaining the timeline just to see Lana’s reaction.
I’m watching Smallville for the first time and I just finished this episode in tearsss. I’ll definitely miss the warmth Jonathan brings to the show. As someone who is trying to navigate living far away from parents, Martha and Jonathan have been my favorite to watch as they’ve done an amazing job in bringing that parental love and comfort that can be felt through the tv screen. I may be 20+ years late to this but I’m so grateful to have come across Smallville, it’s been helping me get through some tough times. Thanks Tom and Michael 💙
I put up my review but I do wish that John Schneider was part of this episode. Even though he wasn't happy about dying, after time has passed, it would have been nice to hear him talk about this episode.
What a 100th episode. This was a great heartbreaking episode. Everyone's acting was great. I remember watching this back then and being shocked and sad that Jonathan Kent died.
I was glad it didn’t. Not Clana fan. At least Lois didn’t have to think about it and wasn’t asked just because he was afraid to lose someone. Also for ep down the line. At least Lois didn’t force the secret out of him. One of many of Lana’s toxic bitch traits.
Jonathan's death was certainly heartbreaking in Reckoning. But, honestly, it's the scene at the end of Vengeance that just tears me up. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!!!
SMALLVILLE FOREVER! CONGRATULATIONS Tom, Michael, Ryan, Bryce, Jason and the entire team on reaching the milestone of 100 Episodes of TALK VILLE! It's an amazing achievement, and you guys should be proud of it! I thank you for all the effort, hard work, commitment, and dedication! "Reckoning" is one of the GREATEST episodes of the series, and I am grateful it got the 9 Roses it rightfully deserves because it is truly unforgettable, no matter what. Tom's performance is 100% perfection as Clark goes through every emotion. Great to hear from both Al & Greg! I always appreciate the insight! Good luck to everyone attending the first ever Smallville only Creation convention this weekend! Best Wishes, Fatima
The moment of truth. This episode gave me so much sadness with Jonathan Kent's passing. Jonathan Kent fulfilled his deal with Jor-El that started back in season 3 premiere to bring Clark home. Then with episode 13 man I literally had tears as Clark comes home with the watch he wears and as he watches the home video of his dad and himself on the tractor and driving away saying goodbye is such a beautiful send off. The embrace with Clark and Martha as Clark cries ah man couldn't take it 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 l😢.
My favorite underrated scene was Lex’s reaction when he saw Clark speed in to Lana! Michael again with awesome acting! It made me feel even more shocked and sad in that scene. So glad the director pointed that scene out!!!
I loved that scene too! Its shot in such an understated way, and Michael's subtle expression changes were perfect. This also paired with the shock and horror on Tom's face was great, and so sad. Also, the music was amazing.
@@lilacmist04 right?! This is why this show is the best Superman show. The camera angles, music, creativity and the tone were something else! When I watched this back in highschool I would just imagined real life in the same creativity and tone. Made me see the world differently in an awesome light!
This was one of the most beautiful and simultaneously heart wrenching episode of all time. It gives you everything you've wanted for the characters and then rips it all away. I always felt frustrated that after Jonathan's death, Clark didn’t proceed with telling Lana who he was. And post season 7, this whole alternate timeline is never addressed between Clark and Lana.
I really love how they did the proposal scene. They could’ve easily had Clark just get down on one knee and pull out the ring but instead you get to see him actually assemble the ring using his strength and heat vision, while also showing Lana those powers. Such a nice touch.
Yet one of the many things the writers stole that actually belonged to Clark and Lois In the comics. At least Clark proposed to Lois cause he wanted to be with her forever and not just out of fear of losing her like Lana. Also at least lois didn’t have to think about it. Only good thing about the time Change was making that bullshit non existent. She should’ve stayed dead though.
@@alyce831 I’m just commenting on how well done the scene was. This isn’t about your bullshit shipping wars or whatever you’re getting upset about. Take that shit somewhere else.
I always loved that small scene between Clark and Martha and the funeral when they show the various shots of the Kent farm. Notably the Kent sign and the final shot of the calf walking along side its mother/father. It really was a nice tribute to Jonathon's life work as a farmer and a father.
I liked Lois and Lana's conversation. After Clark revealed his secret, Lana says it might have changed how she feels about him, and Lois says 'I would be lucky to be with someone as noble as Clark someday." Lois is often snarky and making jokes, but its always nice to see her real feelings. I also think it would have been great to see more Lois and Lana scenes in the series too.
I’ve rewatched Smallville more times than I can count and without fail I will cry at Jonathan’s death and the conversation between Clark and Martha before the funeral every single time. Annette and John gave unbelievable performances as always. “A heart beats only so many times in a life. Your father used his more then anyone I know.”
Can’t wait to listen to this, Reckoning is my all time favorite smallville episode : the acting is just phenomenal, the pace, the tragedy of it all… anyway, listening to talkville is a joy every week, bravo ! 👏👏👏 One remark though : I hope you’ll get Kristin Kreuk for another great/important episode (there’s a few coming up) not just the weaker ones as spell or thirst, she deserves to talk about things she liked to perform and not only about the shitty storylines .
Absolutely agree, although it’s fun to hear her talk about her crazy episodes, she deserves to come on and talk about her best ones and there are plenty of them coming up.
This was an amazing episode! That acting was great from everyone, and what a devastating ending. I knew it was coming eventually, but it still got me. Losing Jonathan is a pivotal moment for Clark, and he'll be missed in the show.
Probably in my top 5 episodes of SMALLVILLE. I cried my eyes out when Lana died and then again when it was actually Jonathan. Pivotal episode of the series that still holds up.
52:36 Michael saying “you were just as important as any actor on the show” to someone who was arguably more important to the show’s success than every actor combined got a full-on belly laugh from me! (Seeing as the show likely would have been cancelled during or immediately following Season 1 if he hadn’t stepped in to helm it on the ground, and then guide its quality for the next 97 episodes straight!)
This episode Jonathan fulfilled the life debt that Joe-El needed to bring Clarke back to life in season 5 and episode 3. And I think he would do it thousand times more for the sake of his son and family. He is a true father in every sense of the word!!💔💔💔
56:00 “[Was this episode more emotionally impactful when you watched it *_again_* many years later?]” Michael, who never watched it: “[Totally]” Lol! 😂
I am not surprised that Clark never told Lana after going back in time. He couldn't take the risk, and Al Gough was spot on about Jor-El’s warning: 'Our powers may seem extraordinary on Earth, but we are not gods.' - Jor-el. I love how he explained that even if you change one thing, the universe will always find a way to restore balance. This was clear throughout the episode as the universe was trying to restore balance. Even if Clark had saved Lana and his dad hadn't got in a fight, his father would have died anyway because of the deal with Jor-El plus Jor-El was clear from the start- he literally told Clark that someone life would be taken in exchange for his. Also Johnathan was so hot headed lol - when he comes back in season 10 he recognized this and tells Clark guess heaven changed him a bit.
This is one of the best episodes of the series. It is the best of early Smallville. From here, the show completely changes from a coming of age story of a boy who would become the greatest superhero in the world to a full blown superhero show. After this the other greatest episode of the series 100% Homecoming. In fact, I prefer that one more than Reckoning because I love that Clark actually retains the lessons he learns in that one unlike in Reckoning when he’s still too immature to understand. So Ryan, just you wait until you get to the 200th episode Homecoming. You’ll lose your mind.
The emotional rollercoaster 🎢 that this episode takes us on is crazy... I remember watching it live back in the day with my Dad... We were both like 😮... Me and my Dad talk to this day about how they should've kept Jonathan Kent alive and how they could've had Clark and Lana end up together instead of going the typical Superman route of Clark getting with Lois... I never thought that the writers really gave their relationship a chance because every time Clark and Lana got close, disaster quickly followed, which then forced Clark to distance himself from Lana to protect her and this episode definitely went to the extreme on that... Tom and Kristin's chemistry is still iconic to this day... I will say to be on the lookout for a nice character arc for Lionel 😎... Rewatching the episode earlier this morning, I definitely got choked up again when Jonathan died in the arms of Clark and Martha... To me, this is where the show got on a little bit of a decline (at least for a while) because even though Clark, Lex and Lana are the Big 3 as far as the anchors of the show, Jonathan Kent was the heart (no pun intended) of the show... John Schneider will forever be the best Jonathan Kent of all-time 💯... All in all, I'll give this episode a rare 🌹🌹🌹 (3 roses)... #TalkvilleWednesdays #LoveThePodcastFellas
@@sandraviana7593 Sorry but I'm not a Superman fan so I never saw any of the Superman movies. So I do not care what Superman did for Lois in the Superman movies. All I know is Clark proposed to Lana in the most romantic way with an engagement ring he made from a coal in his fortress. His proposal to Lois was not even romantic. The executive producers of the show were the ones that said Kristin and Tom had great chemistry. They said so in the DVD commentary for the show. I'm sure the executive producers in the entertainment business know more about on-screen chemistry then a lay person like yourself.
Sean from Indianapolis!!! I'm SO SORRY my question was way too long i have HORRIBLE ADHD on top of being nervous I definitely dragged that out . But I can't put into words how much it meant my question finally got aired on this show. I just called everyone I knew to tell them . This has been the one thing getting me through the week and looking forwards to the next . Life's been hell lately but this has been the best I've felt this entire year!!!! God thank you so much michael and Tom and I promise I'll leave shorter questions from now on🤣🤣😬
This is a top five episode for me. It's powerful, it's moving, the music was perfect, every performance was gripping... if any episode deserves 3 roses, this one runs away with it. This episode also got me into James Blunt with You're Beautiful (and afterwards I bought his album at that time) as well as Peter Gabriel who performed the heartbreaking song, "I Grieve". This episode was heavy on the heart but you have to appreciate its excellence in every aspect. Okay, now I'm ready to watch this Talk Ville episode now.
This episode is one of the best episodes if not the #1 best, when this episode aired it broke me multiple time, and still gets me when I re-watch it, even though I was expecting Johnathan Kent to die, everyone was so good in this episode. The next episode get me also at the end. The show was never the same after this.
41:02 Thank you for bringing this guest! I always had the feeling that someone on that show was playing this role, knowing who it was and how it happens was very revealing!
I always liked the superman stories with both parents still around in Clark's superman years. Lois & Clark, Superman The Animated Series, etc. It was a bummer when they killed off Jonathan on Smallville. He was one of those characters, along with Martha, that really grounded the show.
Four takeaways from this episode of Talkville: 1. Greg Beeman is a literal treasure! So humble. He's everything you guys have talked him up to be. 2. Tom - The striped shirt? LOOKING GOOD, SIR! 🥰 3. One of the Patrons called in from THE Kent Farm. I've been there before. Such a nostalgic location in Langley. 4. For half of the episode, I could have sworn Rosey had a tongue ring. I realized it was just a mint. 😂
For years in the reruns of Smallville I had not been able to go beyond the episode Reckoning of the fifth season. For me, one of the strengths of the series was the relationship between Clark' parents, each other and their son, an extraordinary example of chemistry and family that everyone could dream of having, also taking into account close-knit actors who played them, John Schneider and Annette. O'Toole.
My dad died in August of 2001, so Clark and Jonathan's relationship was something I always enjoyed through the show. When Jonathan died it hit me SUPER hard and I knew it was going to happen but it was still extremely sad. John was fantastic in the role and I was sad to see him go as well.
BEEMAN IS THE BEST!!!! I feel the same way he does about that scene where Lex sees Clark super speed in front of him. I don’t how he did it. But! Those facial expressions are some of the best acting I’ve ever seen!
One of the best episodes...maybe the best. The emotional rollercoaster was insane. The acting, directing, and editing was superb. Also, the soundtrack was amazing.
I want to push back on the notion that Jonathan Kent never makes it into the Superman years. The Post-Crisis (mid-1980s) version certainly did; in fact that was the inspiration for Lois & Clark, which also had a very much alive Jonathan Kent. Having Jonathan die is certainly a legitimate creative choice and opened up new possibilities for the show, but there was already precedent for him surviving longer had they wanted to go that route.
I still think that Smallville often hit it out of the park with their music. I Grieve by Peter Gabriel at the end, chef's kiss. It's almost as good as it is in city of angels
"This is why I'm afraid to bone you" - Very possibly the funniest line I've heard from all of the episodes so far! Super strength smash that like button for Ryan, the man who calls it as it is!
A lot of people also forget that in the episode I forgot what it’s called where the kid that can see peoples deaths he said Lana dies old in her bed. When Clark screams to Jarrell, he says this is not her destiny.
There was a scene in Roswell in which Max (an alien) proposes to Liz (human), in episode 18 of Season 3. He takes a lump of coal and turns it into a diamond ring and says it's a trick he learned from superman. I both love and hate this episode of smallville because we lost Jonathan. BUT Michael made a good point. It had to be Jonathan. His death is a huge push for Clark to grow as a man and a hero. Also, I think if it wasn't for Lois encouraging Lana, she would've said no to the proposal or at least would've taken a lot more time to think things through. I loved the confirmation of Clarks love for Lois in this episode. Annettes screams terrified me though. Brought up some traumatic memories of life events for me.
Thanks to all cast and crew. I consider Smallville to be the definitive origin story for Clark Kent/Superman. This episode hits me hard every time. So heartbreaking. I love that I’m able to rewatch with my kids. It’s a great show for families and Superman shows.
When you go to IMDB and look up Smallville, this episode is listed as one of the highest rated episodes. Even though I knew it was going to happen, it still made it hard to watch. Jonathan was Clark's rock. I loved when Martha told Clark that a heart beats so many times. I cry every time I watch this episode. I loved the Superman and Back to the Future references. Chloe asking about how she reacted but the best scene was the funeral. Like Lex told Clark, "When my father dies Kings will come to his funeral. When your father dies his friends will.' That hit in this moment and it was sad that Lex was just in the background but he still paid his respects. I could keep going on about this episode but I'll end it with three roses.
this is the first episode i really hated Lex, if it wasn’t for his obsession with Clark Lana wouldn’t have died and Clark would have been able to have a happily ever after with Lana 😭 i know Louis & Clark has to be endgame but it’s so sad to think they were so close to be together forever and it just didn’t happen 💔
Kkkkk,!
I think this episode really showed just how much fatherly love Jonathan had for his family and how much he would sacrifice for them. It’s clear even if he was the one who had the crystal and could have known that saving Lana would mean his own death he still would chose to sacrifice himself no matter how many times it took💔💔😭😭
This is one of the best episodes of Smallville, in basically any way you want to look at it. Story, acting, lighting, music, sets, you name it. One thing not a lot of people talk about, is the opening scene compared to when he travels back. In the opening scene, the song is louder/focuses more on the lovely/beautiful parts, but when Clark travels back to that moment later in the episode, the hurt and "never meant to be" part of the song stands out more. Such a nice touch! John Schneider and Annette O'Toole are both amazing, as always, and play such an important part in this episode, even before the death and funeral scenes. The way Jonathan tries to console Clark right after Lanas car crash, by pulling him away from her body and telling him there was nothing he could do, foreshadowing the fact that there was nothing Clark could do for him later. So many great scenes in this one, and an easy three roses! One of the best episodes of any superhero TV shows, ever!
the favorite scene, and what I think the most important scene of the whole series, should have been lana's death and the reasoning for that is actually because of jonathan kent. he says, what I feel, is the most important line that clark needed to hear throughout the whole series, "there was nothing you could have done, nothing." which represents the idea that even though clark has all of these amazing abilities, he can't always save everyone.
Epic episode that personally took me on an emotional rollercoaster as I had lost my father suddenly in 2000. I cried when Jonathan passed away. I had never cried as a result of watching a television show. Everyone brought their "A" game and the episode marked a turning point for all involved. Three roses. 🌹🌹🌹 💛💙❤️💋💯
And we’ve made to, imo, the greatest episode of Smallville ever; every time I rewatch a tear comes out. Especially in the next episode at the end when Martha and Clark are watching a VHS of young Clark and Jonathan and he says goodbye, even thinking of it right now I become teary 🥺
This episode gets 3 roses from me.
so damn good
"Clark, a heart beats only so many times in a life. Your father used his more than anyone I know". 😭😭😭
The best line to ever sum up Smallville's Jonathan Kent.
Yes! And I love that line from Martha. That scene with her and Clark was heartbreaking and so beautifully acted.
The most heartbreaking episode of Smallville
great catch. wow
Hola saludos desde Córdoba España
I've always said that Schneider is the DEFNITIVE version of Johnathan Kent.
Beautiful.
🌹🌹🌹
The Peter Gabriel song made this scene more epic.
smallville slow mos are something else
@@hazcatsophia yes it was PERFECT
How do they not mention the Peter Gabriel song and how it made that scene so much better? Huge oversight
I think about that scene all the time. The way it was mirrored and Martha’s reaction at the end is amazing.
Al Gough is such a graet guy for devoting his time for Talkville. honestly, it's not taken for granted
I’m sorry for your loss, at least you had Clark to go through it with
🫡
I literally had the same thing happen to me when I was 18yrs old and this episode was the first one I ever saw of the show and it helped me grieve my loss and I related to Clark in so many ways. This is why Smallville is my favorite show, it made me the man I am today. Thank you for sharing this story, it’s nice ti know I was not alone having a similar experience during this difficult time. Long live Smallville!!!
@@ryanpermison8003 Oh wow, thanks Ryan. Thats the power of film and television when done right. And I got my love for film and superheroes from my Dad so it all just came together.
one of the saddest things is that after this, Lana never knew she was ever engaged to Clark 😭
I'm sure they discussed it when she started living at the kent home. 😂
...and that she FINALLY knew the truth about Clark and everything made sense.
Did it matter? At the end of the day, Lana's main problem is that she's not Lois Lane.
@@44excaliburnot at all. Smallville didn’t need her to be.
@@Ambereigh Smallville also didn't need Lana to be at the center of Clark's story all the time either. By season 5, high school is over, and it's time to say goodbye to Lana. You can't have her detracting from Clark's Superman storyline or from Chloe and Lois.
The thing I appreciate most about Smallville is the acting, the acting just makes the action and effects just pop.
thanks pal
@@TalkVillePodcastI can just imagine michael rosenbuam typing out these replies 😂 (it’s most likely bryce tho lol)
One of the best episodes of entire series. I still think that Schneider and Annette deserved 10 seasons! And GUEST'S!!! Thank you!❤
This still ranks as one of the most pivotal episodes of the entire series. Great episode and keep up the great work, guys!
agreed, big turning point
😢 Jonathan‘s death is the starting point of losing the Kent‘s home/farm! Filming at the Kent‘s gave so much warmth to the show, I miss that in the later seasons!
literally
It wasn't lost, the farm was still used a lot in later seasons.
@@passionsquietrage yes. it was used less and less and with it I find we lost a very wholesome aspect of Smallville
Great episode!
definitely deserves it
@@TalkVillePodcasti think Promise in season 6 is also a 3 rose 🌹🌹🌹 episode for me. I loved Lexmas and Reckoning so much and I'm glad you 3 did too. I hope you love that one when you get to it.
19:28 Reckoning is so great that it made Michael forget about Thirst....for about ten seconds 🤣
cant forget about that one
John Scheider's acting - great
Anette O'Toole's acting - great
Tom Welling's acting - great
Michael Rosenbaum's acting - great
Kristin Kreuk's acting - great
Nuff said.
Too much Lana.
agreed they were all A++ this episode.
Allison Mack’s acting- superb!
Kristin, nah!
1:00:28 @Tom - The caller was implying that since it was stated that Clark would lose someone else he loves dearly, Lois being in danger at all (especially the first threatened!) implies that he already loves her dearly, thus hinting at their future romance.
Yes, and she also reveals how she truly sees him when talking to Lana.
And the relationship between Clark and his parents worked extremely well on Lois and Clark.
@@LaunchpadGamingGuy And it's one of the versions I adore most.
@@tmntaddictsame. Even the 90s comics at the time kept both parents alive, but I adore K Callan and Eddie Jones as Martha and Jonathan Kent.
@josefsilvia5360 They really equal John Schneider and Annette 'Toole. 🩵🙏
This episode stuck with me for so long and Tom Welling plays sadness incredibly well especially at the end when he cries in annette o'tool's arms
That scene with the home video and Clark finally breaking down absolutely destroyed me when I first saw it. Incredibly well acted
Tom's hair looks fabulous while reading the patreons names
I agree, that hairstyle looks amazing on him!
100% This episode is so well done, but I just can't rewatch it often. Too heartbreaking.
It was a nod to Superman III. Supes replaces Lana’s Diamond Ring at the end of the movie.
I'm ALWAYS holding on 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
@@appleel7937 Judy Legendary right we are already at 100 episode seems like yesterday from "Damn Who's That" 🤣 Episode to This Masterpiece ❤️💙🤘
As brainiac 5 says in season 10 "This is perhaps the defining moment for you" Couldn't agree more, Loved this episode!!.
This is an amazing episode for so many reasons and they hit a lot of them in the podcast. A couple I wanted to mention…
- Johnathan helping Martha with her necklace midway through the episode and then her trying and failing to put the same necklace on for the funeral… it’s such an understated moment and puts into perspective so many small things our loved ones do that leave a hole when they are gone… so heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time
- And I know we talk about the amazing Annette but her scene with Tom before the funeral always brings me to tears. Both of you did so amazing in that scene
All around amazing episode.
This should have been 2 hours+. Guys, make these special episodes AN EVENT! 👍
Happy 100th episode Smallville! RIP Jonathan Kent!
My prediction is that when the podcast reaches it's last episode, they will announce a new smallville show
Awesome hearing from Al and his insights into how they designed the show! So glad they created Smallville!
I was a huge Clana fan, so of course I wanted their engagement to stick!
Same.
For me the show ended when he puts the ring on her finger. Just a perfect ending.
I was glad it didn’t. Not Clana fan. At least Lois didn’t have to think about it and wasn’t asked just because he was afraid to lose someone. Also for ep down the line. At least Lois didn’t force the secret out of him. One of many of Lana’s toxic bitch traits.
@@alyce831😂😂😂😂yes, hate Lana
Great episode. Great soundtrack. 100 episodes. What a Landmark! Congratulations again!
Agreed this part was unreal
More than 100 podcast episodes, at least on UA-cam, given the end of season recaps.
🎉🎉
100 normal ones :)
I really love how they did the proposal scene. They could’ve easily had Clark just get down on one knee and pull out the ring but instead you get to see him actually assemble the ring using his strength and heat vision, while also showing Lana those powers. Such a nice touch.
Yet one of the many things the writers stole that actually belonged to Clark and Lois
In the comics. At least Clark proposed to Lois cause he wanted to be with her forever and not just out of fear of losing her like Lana. Also at least lois didn’t have to think about it. Only good thing about the time
Change was making that bullshit non existent. She should’ve stayed dead though.
@@alyce831 I’m just commenting on how well done the scene was. This isn’t about your bullshit shipping wars or whatever you’re getting upset about. Take that shit somewhere else.
I loved this episode!!! I cried when Johnathon died! Thank you writers and directors and of course actors for this super
Episode!!
I introduced my nieces to Smallville long ago. By this episode they were 13 and 11. They were in tears in.
It always gets me too, and what a beautiful line from Martha.
The music in this episode was top notch as well
100% agree
56:00 “[Was this episode more emotionally impactful when you watched it *_again_* many years later?]”
Michael, who never watched it: “[Totally]” Lol! 😂
100%
100 episodes! Well done keep it going!
thanks chickengran
This is one of the best episodes of the series. It is the best of early Smallville. From here, the show completely changes from a coming of age story of a boy who would become the greatest superhero in the world to a full blown superhero show. After this the other greatest episode of the series 100% Homecoming. In fact, I prefer that one more than Reckoning because I love that Clark actually retains the lessons he learns in that one unlike in Reckoning when he’s still too immature to understand. So Ryan, just you wait until you get to the 200th episode Homecoming. You’ll lose your mind.
I love Clark’s grieving process for the rest of the season. Very powerful and emotional at every turn especially showing his anger and guilt.
I didn’t want Jonathan to die either.

This episode! Made me feel some type of way 😢 Johnathon Kent was a top tier character.
One of the absolute best episodes of the series! ❤
I always liked the superman stories with both parents still around in Clark's superman years. Lois & Clark, Superman The Animated Series, etc. It was a bummer when they killed off Jonathan on Smallville. He was one of those characters, along with Martha, that really grounded the show.
In my adventures with Superman, The Kent’s are still around.
Four takeaways from this episode of Talkville:
1. Greg Beeman is a literal treasure! So humble. He's everything you guys have talked him up to be.
2. Tom - The striped shirt? LOOKING GOOD, SIR! 🥰
That ‘Crisis’ inspired poster you guys shared at the start of the episode, BADASS!🔥 Happy 100th Episode guys! 🎉
One of the best episodes...maybe the best. The emotional rollercoaster was insane. The acting, directing, and editing was superb. Also, the soundtrack was amazing.
both of these guests have such remarkable insight i love it
Truly the best
Love the Christopher Reeve addition to the poster. The passing of the torch from him to you guys was lovely.
Poster looks awesome! This is one of the best episodes in TV history.
Top tier Smallville episode.... Top Tier Talkville
this is the first episode i really hated Lex, if it wasn’t for his obsession with Clark Lana wouldn’t have died and Clark would have been able to have a happily ever after with Lana 😭 i know Louis & Clark has to be endgame but it’s so sad to think they were so close to be together forever and it just didn’t happen 💔
🌹🌹🌹MAGNIFICENT 100th ep in the top 10 of all time 👏👏👏 practically perfect ep ❤️❤️❤️
the favorite scene, and what I think the most important scene of the whole series, should have been lana's death and the reasoning for that is actually because of jonathan kent. he says, what I feel, is the most important line that clark needed to hear throughout the whole series, "there was nothing you could have done, nothing." which represents the idea that even though clark has all of these amazing abilities, he can't always save everyone.
And that was why Clark didn't tell Lana his secrets the 2nd time around. Al Gough said something similar.
Epic episode that personally took me on an emotional rollercoaster as I had lost my father suddenly in 2000. I cried when Jonathan passed away. I had never cried as a result of watching a television show.
Everyone brought their "A" game and the episode marked a turning point for all involved.
Three roses.

💛💙❤️💋💯
And we’ve made to, imo, the greatest episode of Smallville ever; every time I rewatch a tear comes out. Especially in the next episode at the end when Martha and Clark are watching a VHS of young Clark and Jonathan and he says goodbye, even thinking of it right now I become teary 🥺
One of the greatest episodes of television I've seen in my life
