Long Drives, Long Gearing - The Carmudgeon Show - Ep. 39

  • Jason and Derek took a road trip in a Corolla and the car wasn’t great. Then they took one in an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and it was great. Jason also installed a factory retrofit digital instrument cluster for his Lotus Elise, as well as a modification from 034Motorsport which allowed him to achieve 1.07g of lateral acceleration from...his e-Golf!?
Derek responds to a listener’s question about the difference between the Mercedes 400E and 500E, which starts a discussion about gearing and how it can make or break a car. Jason always prefers shorter gearing except for in one car. He also offers his typical insight into why a lot of manufacturers purposefully employ long gearing today, particularly 3rd gear, to meet drive by noise regulations. Jason then laments the long gearing in the Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder before unceremoniously declaring it possibly the finest sports car of all time.
The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.

Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering - which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.

14:00 The shifting car color is pretty common in paints with pearl or other additives, it is due to paint in the hopper not being as agitated by the 3rd or 5th car as it is from the first. Paint repair/spray shops have spray cards for matching factory paint that is 4th or 5th down the line. If you look at any 2 Teslas of the same color you will immediately see this phenomenon.

Not sure if Jason will see this, but useful nonetheless. I have a Mk7 GTI and made the mistake of installing springs (H&R). My factory dampers were shot in less than a year and the car had more body roll than my mother’s LX 570. Coilovers are the only way to go. About a year back I swapped to a set of R&T Öhlins and adore them. They only drop the car about an inch to inch and a half, so clearance will never be a problem. Additional benefits include: dampening adjustability, superb ride quality, and gold dampers - yeah I’m bougie.

This was fun. My (long-gone, always-missed) US-spec '92 GTI 16v had a rebuilt transmission (from the also long-gone Kraftswerk crew) that featured four shorter gears (that were supposedly the same as the contemporary diesel) with an "Autobahn" 5th gear that was so hilariously low that I'd barely reach 3000 rpm at fast highway cruising speeds. At the time I was taking the GTI to track days at Gingerman, Blackhawk Farms, and even Road America, so that long-ass 5th was perfect for the long drives to those venues. Brilliant stuff.

On a digital dash, I would like oil and coolant temperatures, but in addition to RPM I'd like a load gauge, which measures how much torque is produced with a line at full throttle. Maybe integrate it into the RPM, so the RPM goes from left to right but the load goes up and down on the screen.
Steering, braking and acceleration G is also useful, and it takes camber into account so having the car parked sideways on an incline gives a non zero so I know my traction limits are less trying to turn in the direction the camber rises.

Jason mentioned the balance of his e-Golf. My Golf Mk7 has very balanced handling. It is a GT wagon with the R-Line package and DCC, so it has the springs, sway bars, and brakes of the GTI, but with the 1.4 engine and the 6-speed manual transmission, it has considerably less weight and better fore-aft balance. At 165 hp running premium it doesn't have the power of the GTI, but a stage 1 chip tune will get it close to 200. 40 mpg at a steady 70 mph in a station wagon that tops out at 140 and has better balance than a GTI, in a car that doesn't break the bank seems a bit like magic to me.

Nevertheless, I "feel" a difference (or I like to cheat myself) when sitting in a 500E because there is so much built quality. Anyway, the fact is that the 500E is handmade in Zuffenhausen at Porsche and not from the assembly line in Untertürkheim. That makes at least a difference as a collector's car.

Gearing- I daily’d an NC1 Miata for 9 years in Southeastern Pennsylvania, much of it on I95 in and out of Philadelphia. I’m obviously a glutton for punishment or a hero depending on your perspective. Sixth gear is direct drive, no OD on that car. I would have sold a kidney to get that thing below 4000 rpm at 75mph. Give me close ratios 1-5 and an overdrive and I’d probably still be in that car. It just gets exhausting. No possibility of a phone conversation or actually hearing the radio on the highway top up or down. Yeah I know it’s a sports car but I could afford only one car and I suffered so that it could be that one. 9 Pennsylvania winters and 4 sets of Pirelli winter tires and I’m here to tell the tale. Actually a blast in the snow with the right tires and an aftermarket electric seat heater.

Tall gearing on motorcycles is really silly. On my Suzuki GSXR-750. 60 MPH was 4.5 rpm. 80 MPH was 6.5k RPM. Redline in first gear is 75MPH; second gear is 100MPH+. The problem isn't just the tall gearing; the problem is the vibrations and noise at high rpms. The engine is silky smooth at 3-5k rpm but vibrates from 5-8K; then silky smooth to 13k redline. So around town and normal highway cruising you are almost always in the vibration zone. And it isn't just Suzuki... all sportbikes are in the same boat because of the inherent inline-4 resonances.

So if noise regulations are responsible for the super tall gearing, here's the fix: Re-label 1st gear "Low", 2nd gear "1", 3rd gear "2", etc.... Then the noise test will have the car in 4th gear.

The likely reason for the high reading speedo... In the UK most cars tend to read higher as UK traffic laws state that you are allowed the speed limit, plus 12 percent before you can be done for speeding. I know that is a little less than your car but after all it is a lotus!

If you think 80 at 8000 in second is tall, let me tell you that my 94 SHO atx hits 89 at 7k in second, and since first tops out at like 47 it doesn't want to downshift over 30 so you have to just wait for it to wind out.

Two colors of red on Italian machinery is nothing new. My Aprilia Futura was flam red. Fast forward to replacing body panels after my grievous high side incident. The pre-painted panels from Italy were three different reds, and none of them were the same as what came originally on the bike. Love-hate relationship with that thing.

Just like the late VW MK6 JSW 2.5 5spd having 170BHP with stupid tall gearing (going to 75mph in 2nd and 110mph in 3rd) the good thing is no matter what ''legal'' speed you are doing you can always throw it in 3rd gear.. ;)
