A W123 Diesel estate... Was my first car. It started every time, even at -20°C, it didn't use too much fuel, it had great engine breaking. (great when you live in the alps) and was incredibly spacious and relaxing to drive. As for the engine never dying, i have one story... For me it’s my E92 M3. I’d sack a store for a trunk full of spare oil and gas station gift cars. Gathering spare parts to hide for later would help give me a task to ground myself during crazy times. A solo drive in my car clears my head and helps me live in the moment like no other. Fun W123 fact. The early automatic (maybe even up to '82) had the rear pump in the auto box attached to the prop shaft, so if you rolled it fast enough, like down a long enough hill, you could roll start them! Even the diesel!
I have a large dump truck with a Big Cam Cummins diesel (855cubic inches) that's all mechanical fuel injection. And it doesn't even have glow plugs, or a grid heater. I think the main Problem of the Defender is that it also lost its body on frame construction. Which is what you want when you go for a simple, rough offroader. For most people it will not matter as it does technically most of the stuff they want it to do. It`s still good offroad but for ho long when you are Overlanding for example? The modern version can also take less load and because of the Unibody, it is hard to modify for that kind of needs. Try to repair a new Defender somewhere out in Wilderness or just try to get a new pair of tires for the new model in the middle of nowhere. - That`s all important out there and the Defender was one of the Top-3 Overlanding cars used in the scene.
One major argument for the M-B W123 and the W124 diesels is they are still running as taxis in middle eastern countries where war has been the normal state of things for decades... Also you can run them on used vegetable oil, just raid all the fast food restaurants. Old frying oil is a great fuel in the older M-B diesel engines.
Good insights as usual, and I thought you guys were really going to forget about the Landcruiser - glad to see it wasn't missed! However, if I am in a zombie apocalypse, somehow I would still feel a bit safer in a Ripsaw EV2, or a Conquest Knight EV, Kombat T-98, the Marauder, and other absolutely silly armoured vehicles. Maybe one of the models from the lesser-known Inkas company. What about a Unimog? I think it would tick-off every box possible, and then go to a whole new level having a Unimog converted into a fancy overlander - you will survive and be able to pledge allegiance to your new cockroach overlords. Love your discussions!
I’d get my diesel W163. It has been with me for over 10 years now and it’s my go to car if I can’t predict road conditions or weather. Not very long ago I recieved a phonecall in the middle of the night saying that I needed to get to a hospital, so I just took a car and went. Sitting at a red light, it hit me: I am in the ML, I did not think about taking it, but my subconcious did. Plus, it did pretty good against dinosaurs, it will handle zombies without breaking a sweat.
audi 4000 quattro does not have a fan belt. it has an electric fan behind the radiator which is side mounted. it has an alternator and power steering belt that is at the nose
Jeep xj. Uncles went 140k with zero service. No oil changes just adding when low. Sold it for 3k still running after 15 years. Timing chain last forever and will run with common cracked cylinder head on late motors, just add water. Cut trans cooler lines from the radiator to prevent coolant mixing when the rad fails. Also there's a diesel engine option if imported.
My money is on a Toyota Mega Cruiser for a zombie apocalypse rig. All the reliability of a Land Cruiser, diesel engine so it'll run on all the used deep fryer oil you can find, and the unstoppable offroad ability of the Hummer H1. Yes it might as wide as an 18 wheeler, but if the route is too narrow, just plow through.
Y’all named so many of my favorite models in this episode.. I guess I’ve always subconsciously been a fan of zombie apocalypse cars (or, as I’ve always put it, “cars that are built to carry out a specific task WELL”).. and the 4000q was one of my introductions to Audis many many years ago, and will always hold a special place in my heart. Volvo 245s, Jeeps, Suzuki 4WDs of various shapes (!!!)... The list could go on and on. And yeah, to reiterate what you said (and it’s a shame we’re still saying this shit in 2020), Fuck Racism y’all. ✌️
Nothing was slower than the ‘Vette I drove in high school...Chevette that is. At 50 with the A/C on, going WOT did nothing more than deliver more racket from the engine bay.
A vehicle to survive the apocalypse: surely an early 1960s Rolls-Royce Phantom V by Mulliner Park Ward - you can sleep in it; and when they throw stones at it, you can offer them a drink...
240D W123 4speed manual got it to 170km/h aka 105mph down very long hill running on veggie oil, it burned so much oil i lost like a quart of engine oil just doing that almost overheated
Best zombie apocalypse car for me: definitely estate car, diesel, low/no electronics. Peugeot 504 Diesel Estate, W126 Estate conversion, BMW 525tds e34 Touring no that has an electronic engine management thingy so no. Citroen CX2500 because: electrically adjustable doormirror, oil level can be checked from the inside, spare is in the front so I don't have to unpack everything, tyre changes are super easy and it's comfy and spacious.
Isnt electronic ignition voulnerable to emp? Points style distributors would be ideal? Montana will use a ton of gravel and small amounts of salt. Buying snow tires is so much easier than buying a subframe in 5 years

How about a Unimog?
a G-wagen will totally blow its shocks under whatever its shortest service interval. A diesel hilux will outlast anything
I think Toyota Land Cruisers get reaaallly up there too with high mileage and high prices too, especially the 70s/80s cars.
End of times vehicle? Unimog! The end.
sounds like a 4x4 swapped Perkins diesel Ford Ranger would fit your zombie apocolypse criteria pretty well
One major argument for the M-B W123 and the W124 diesels is they are still running as taxis in middle eastern countries where war has been the normal state of things for decades...
Also you can run them on used vegetable oil, just raid all the fast food restaurants. Old frying oil is a great fuel in the older M-B diesel engines.
They should do an episode where they describe their dream garages (money is not a problem) and why they'd pick those cars.
Quickest I've ever tapped a notification
I would get a Middle East/Australia market J200 Diesel Toyota Land Cruiser, that thing will last until the end of time, and then some.
My apocalypse car is definitely a 80 series landcruiser
45:25, Spotlight video series for the ISSIMI collection, Torchlight or Candlelight series for your own collections
Much love to Jason and Derek for that intro.
Ariel Nomad is the best apocalypse car, or best car period.
those 3.0L OM606 diesels are bulletproof. Mechanical fuel pump mod and some new plumbing will get you 380whp and 460tq
31:10 wasn't that the plot of Rebellion or whatever the show was called
The ideal apocalypse car can only be the Chrysler turbine car, no maintenance, runs on anything that is flammable.
Until those really old turbine parts deteriorate beyond repair. Which is pretty much as soon as they get worn...
The wrangler is so unreliable you would want the zombies to own them.
Looking forward to another great podcast!
Make that 500E episode happen guys
GX/LX?
DTS. Do you know of the LM002 sitting at the gas station garage in San Fran? Hasn't moved in a long time. Its a white one I think..
Yep he's sent me a pic of that thing
I know this is an old video but the original Willys Jeeps had a 9 slot grill. It was actually Ford that came up the 7 slot grill
Nothing was slower than the ‘Vette I drove in high school...Chevette that is. At 50 with the A/C on, going WOT did nothing more than deliver more racket from the engine bay.
i spent 5 mins looking for the t-shirt buying link and i couldn't' find it.
Dicks! 😂 From one proud Defender owner... 2016 90, not that new comfortable looking thing. Love your work chaps, podcast gold!
"There was a great speech by Van Jones..." I knew we were off the rails at that point.
A vehicle to survive the apocalypse: surely an early 1960s Rolls-Royce Phantom V by Mulliner Park Ward - you can sleep in it; and when they throw stones at it, you can offer them a drink...
Where in Germany did you live Jason?
HG.
@@JasonCammisa The hamburgler!
Where's the link to the t-shirts, brotato? I see no link. I need the lambo up on blocks t-shirt.
teespring.com/stores/issimi-shop
Wait so why did the OG Willy’s Jeep have 9 slots in front grill?
240D W123 4speed manual got it to 170km/h aka 105mph down very long hill running on veggie oil, it burned so much oil i lost like a quart of engine oil just doing that almost overheated
Great episode. I love cars, but in the apocalypse, I’d rather have a horse... or maybe a 2CV... lol...
The timing of this episode is eerily appropriate.
Is that intentional?
2006 Dodge Cummings, best truck ever
Own that soap box J-Sauce and DTS!
Diesel mid or rear engine cars? Beetle for one?
Having driven many miles in a Military Hummer , yes they sick to drive on the road but would be a good Zombie vehicle.
I read that that red huracan needed only needed a gearbox replacement at 180k miles. But other than that it was very reliable.
Jeep name came from either the GP name or from Eugene the Jeep, a cartoon. No one seems to really know which.
Isnt electronic ignition voulnerable to emp? Points style distributors would be ideal? Montana will use a ton of gravel and small amounts of salt. Buying snow tires is so much easier than buying a subframe in 5 years
Okay what about that turbo 3l Mercedes diesel in a Suzuki
