Thanks Dan. Your laid back, but focused, approach to practicing and playing is inspirational. Many great tips on becoming a better bass player and musician in this video. Your challenge for us to answer our “Why?” Is key.
What a cracking episode. Cheers, Dan 😎 100% agree on just picking a few songs you like and trying to work them out by ear. You learn so much! Learning the fretboard, too, is invaluable. And if anyone reads this post... Just binge on Dan's playlists. it's one of the best things I've done while learning to play. 🤘 Edit - And buy him a coffee 👍
That’s really kind, thanks! 😂 since you’ve watched a lot, do let me know if you have any lesson ideas. Feel free to email me via the site or on Instagram or wherever.
I have bough a couple of your book last 2 years but just gave up after watching the 10 year old and acrobats on social media. I am back and referring to your materials again. will play just for my own pleasure... Thanks again Dan
As a beginner, the one thing I wished I had done from day one is the timing between plucking and fretting: it’s subtle, but that fraction of a second between the moment the right hand finger or thumb or pick is about to play the note, and your left hand finger putting pressure on the string near the fret, or after you played the note and before you lift pressure from that string. If you practice that technique well It reduces noise, harmonics, fret buzz. It makes the initial learning curve a lot less steep especially if you are very sensitive to noise like I am. Muting is something I wish I had worked a lot more on from day one. I know it’s not a sexy topic but muting is what allowed me to gain confidence I was playing properly and could then correct other aspects of my technique such as rhythm etc.
Very good lesson. The one thing that has really improved my playing is learning how to read music and learning all the scales major and minor. And harmonizing. Also my timing is much better due to using a watch type metronome. Which I wear on my wrist. I love practicing my bass and guitar now as I can improvise now. And all your lessons and the course that I purchased has helped me so much. Thank you Dan.
Going to the gym definitely made me more capable on the bass. Being dextrous and in control technique-wise than my older self had some merits to it. It cleared my mind as well understanding theory a bit more deeper. Who knew that taking care of your health would improve every aspect of your life, huh? Shock!😂
@@OnlineBassCourses I recommend it. You would not believe how much better my mental state is because I work out for 20-30 minutes in the morning 2 days a week (and sometimes more depending on the time of year). Some days I can feel bulletproof. You also want to combat sarcopenia, where your body begins to lose muscle and balance as you start to get grey...
Very good tips. However, as someone quite busy who only spends 10 or 15 minutes a day with my bass I often find it difficult to apply everything I see/learn.
Thanks. With 10-15 minutes/day there’s obviously going to be a limit to what you can do. The options are: to find more time, or stick with what time you have and focus on one thing (I’d learn songs).
Thank you, Dan. Your video lessons are really informative, helpful, and insightful
🙏 Glad you’re finding them useful.
Accordionist learning upright bass here. Love your context hun you nailed it every time. Thanks for your effort and time to teach us. ❤
Thanks very much - glad you like it!

I have the bass Bible book, it also comes with 2 CDs, with all the examples, it's pretty nice.

Hi Dan, thank you for the lesson. But can I request a lesson about how to play bass like in Japanese songs. Anime songs to be precise.
