What level did you make it to? (without ending up in Technique Practice HELL 🔥)
Level 1
I will forward this video to @patrickhunter . j/k ^____-
I notice that both your students pull their left shoulders to the back. So I wonder if that doesn't wear them out.
Could u make a tutorial about Eq, specifically for Darkglass would be cool lol…the hz’s shit
I have a problem with 1 finger per fret. I really struggle to get my pinkie to to the third fret. Even if I pull my fingers apart it will not reach. Not only that but my fingers are pointed not bulbous at the ends so I miss the strings. I have tried exercises. I wish I had hands like normal bass players.
Remember kids, bassbuzz is only cool when a person named josh is teaching you stuff. Not when your bass sounds like it has a cold.
😂😂😂
After 9 years self taught. I can't get enough of this channel, constantly new things that I've overlooked. Like some of the things in this video. Bassbuzz is the best
Man, this channel is really a gem.
I played bass for about ten years as a teen and put it down for twenty. I recently got a new bass and your channel has been indispensable at helping dust the cow webs off while teaching me about all the new tech that has dropped since the early 2000s. Appreciate you! Keep up the good work!
Only just started playing last month and this channel has been so helpful! Earlier tonight I found myself absent mindedly doing the split finger technique without meaning to and was frustrating myself trying to "correct" it since I couldn't find the rhythm in the song anymore. Relieved that my fingers have more plucking sense (sometimes anyway) than I give them credit for!
I just noticed I already use the split finger technique for octaves, as I like to play many bass lines with them. Calling it rarely talked about is definitely true as I haven't seen anything about it, I just assumed it was just the most effective way to play octaves as I found it to be the most natural feeling.
Me too.
For the flying fingers: make sure the action isn't too high on your bass. It'll take less force to press on the string making it easier for your fingers to stay calm. It's impossible to keep your fingers from flying if your action is crazy high.
Thanks!
If I've never mentioned this in a comment before you have a great voice for narration. You could definitely lend your talents to audiobook voice work.
On my first bassiversary I was stoked! Completed Beginner to Badass, learned some songs and thought, "If i make the same amount of progress in year two, it will be amazing!" Now, I'm approaching my second bassiversary, life happened and practice suffered. My hands just aren't in the same responsive condition and playing those same songs is a disappointment. TODAY, I did Level 1 and had a great time when I got to the fast speed and was dancing as I was playing. I feel motivated by an exercise that I can use to get my hands back and enjoy playing again. THANK YOU!!!
Just got my first bass. I've played the drums for a while but wanted to learn another instrument. I've been going through your videos nonstop. You're an incredible teacher, and you do an excellent job of keeping my invested by adding some comedy into your lessons. I also rarely comment on videos but I had to show my appreciation for your videos. I've already learned lots just from watching you, so thank you so much, Josh!! Can't wait to get continue learning 🎸
😊
This exercise has helped retrain my choice of plucking fingers in less time than it would take to watch any other technique video: really focused practice today has reframed a lot of my fingering issues when playing at higher tempos. I think I started level 1 and level 2 at such slow tempo I didn’t even think it was possible (hint. Way slower than 50% 😭)
Worth every penny!
No pain, no game :D After 16 years without electric guitar play I have back to guitar....but not electric , but I started learn bass :) Decision based on yours video and cliff burton playstyle :D
The best bass lessons on UA-cam!
Great video! Really, a wealth of helpful and practical information in just a few minutes. And NOT boring! Thank you!!
I just started to play bass, 2 weeks ago. I switched from my right hand to my natural side..which is left. Your videos are so helpful. 6:23 is exactly my level. It appeared that I had to start like I never touched an instrument. It's exciting but frustrating. Anyway, thanks a lot for your wisdom. Cheers from Canada.
For the "duck wrist", I accidentally found the PERFECT solution for that when literally was starting with the bass. I just... have the guitar positioned in the classical way lol. When like that, actually both wrists are almost not bent at all!
I came up with my 1st original bass fill/solo this week!!! A grooving penetonic walk up and down with lots of groove and bounce sitting around the 7 and 9th frets on the ADandE strings !!!
nice job !
Im a truly beginner, no more than 1 month playing and this helps a lot, thanks!
Been learning bass for couple months now, by myself using what I can find on youtube. And hit an octave wall recently, but naturally ended up at same conclusion (relax your fretting and split fingers) and it is paying off, I can jam octaves much better now. Was surprised how I got validated by your video, thank you Josh.
WAKE UP BABE NEW BASS BUZZ BANGER DROPPED!
Yeah i agree...i practise most of these things when i'm playing bass, i use a D'Addario hand excerciser, builds up strength in your left & right hands/fingers & helps me play more evenly & gently imo...
I had finished Bassbuzz course and now I'm working out my Sight Reading skills. Probably it can be more helpful for me to learn more about techniques and rhythm or something else.
I learned to play bass way back in 1975. In those days, none of the musicians I knew practiced. We all just learned songs and played live at clubs. I love watching these videos, even though I stopped playing bass 15 years ago. No clubs or bars in my area hire live bands anymore. Live bands have been replaced by DJ's, karaoke, or Jukeboxes.
12:54 Not only did BassBuzz save this man's playing, but he ALSO cured his vision too 🙀
Yeah “Basik”
Oooh, speed! Octaves! Thanks for sharing this, Josh. Great video, dead on as ever, and fun as always!
As a three finger plucker that uneven plucking is really something to work at. Especially on the "weaker" ringfinger
I love this channel so much!!
I definitely need to work on this, especially level 3... I squashed my middle finger (right hand) and the resulting scar tissue means I've got zero "grip" on the string, and I've learned to use index and ring fingers instead... it works but I've defenitely noticed the lack of consistency in feel and dynamics.
2nd year player here, this will be incredibly useful thanks
Thanks Josh-as it happens my goal for 2024 was to sight read-which I've done in 1st position at a decent level-and your sheet music happens to be in 2nd postion-which I've been hesitant to learn-so I'm having a lot of fun with all of this.
Love the fact Josh is wearing Rush and playing YYZ in the 1st exercise!
Awesome video. All Content, no BS. Rare on youtube these days :-) I wish someone showed me these tips 20 years ago.. 😁 these excercises are not only for beginners. Great to refresh your technique if you are in the rut
0:15 W Reza for getting featured!
Could you do the "video directory" thing where each exercise's start time is shown, so we can just click to go to that part of the video? Definitely want to review each part (per the PDF!), but it'd be great to be able to find them quickly. Thanks! Great lessons.
Josh is an amazing teacher - hope there is a FBTB Season 2 in the making
Should be called Badass to Boss
😅
Ty for the lesson it already feels so much better
you are so helpful
Josh you really need to do a Beginner to BA, Part 2! I did Beginner to BA and it was great but we all want more!
it helped me so much too! still not badass but trying. so, a 'part 2' would be amazing!
Love this video, loads of stuff I need to work on. You mentioned a free PDF for the lesson but I can't seem to find the link. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Good to see a new video, and quite timely too 😊
This is so helpful specially the fretting technique!
Watched your muting tips last week and have been adding them in and they are starting to come more and more naturally. So cool!
-69yo newbie
Thanks for the lesson, some very good tips and cheers for the pdf, it'll be very helpful.
I was watching this and dropped the playback speed down to 50% so I could see the octaves you were playing for the Mario Underground theme and when you started speaking... it's Drunk Josh giving bass advice! LOL! :P
I'm going to print out the sheet and try these tonight. Not the drunk thing though. :P
You are the best and so are your videos. Thanks once again
Mate I finally got my bass!
Excellent tutorial. Perhaps it might also be a good idea to learn how to read music too?
Muchas gracias saludos desde Chile 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 no hablo ingles para entender pongo los subtitulos en español de youtube, y trato de traducir los Pdf, pero no siempre permite traducir el texto
Man I was struggling for sure! Definitely will use these techniques! 😊
It's a fantastic lesson, thank you!
Very good!
Thank you very much!
Downloading the PDF, great vid
I don’t even play bass but i still love watching your vids😂
You’re the best Josh
I love Josh's JB Squier. Is that a custom job or is there a commercially available model like that one?
Hey Josh! Love your teaching material and I am also rocking your course (truly awesome stuff!) :) Thank you
I think one of the reason for flying fingers is a lack of grip and finger strength which causes players to overcompensate similar to how someone working out improperly will heave the weight they’re using into the exercise.
What I've found when playing something fast is that I usually play too fast. Slowdown is not only good for training but also because, at least what I've seen with myself, death by speed is often caused by going too fast to begin with, or too fast on the wrong parts. Instead try to figure out how to make certain motions easier and calmer for yourself.
Once more a nice video. Thank you
a good song to practice octaves is the song "Where Have You Been, My Disco?" by IV of Spades! it's crazy fun and groovy
I learned that split finger technique on accident when playing the sister act track. It was really difficult so for me to play octaves normally so I had to figure something out.
Exactly what I needed today, thanks!!
@4:04 hey that's the same bass I have!!! Cool!
Hey Josh, if there was an octave followed by three root notes followed by another octave, would you pluck the root with the same finger? It’s what I’m doing now after practicing with strict alternating. In the song I’m practicing I have several octaves in various combinations and I find it more comfortable to keep a finger for a specific string. This way my muting is also a lot better as I am playing octaves from E to D to A to G and if I don’t mute well it’s just super noisy.😂
oh i did not expect to see Reza Wildan here lol
my go-to for ROC basslines he has really useful tabs
Great video, when will you make an advance bass course with slap, tap and harmony
Most of my first songs were muse, a lot of octaves so I was surprised to find my technique was pretty much perfect just through a couple of years of trial, error and practice.
I have a question about octaves - which fingers I should use at right hand, when I want to play triplets low-low-high low-low-high etc. or other situation low-high-high low-high-high? For example like in YMCA 😉
Boss ! please make videos in 6/8 time signiture; both in fast 6/8 and slow 6/8 in collaboration with 3/4 . thank u boss !!
Thx for another great video and exercise 🤗
Educational
Would you be willing to do videos on chord shapes? I'm struggling with Motorhead's "Ace of Spades", particularly the chords that include both the root, fifth and octave. I think my issue is with fretting, but I just can't get the 5(C#)-7(G#)-7(C#) to sound right. Some books recommend just doing the Root + fifth power chord, but I don't have the ear training to tell if they're correct or not.
cool shirt! 🙂
I think I am guilty of literally all of these technique fails so hopefully this will really help.
I tried to do the setup for level 1 and how do you even lift the ring finger that much? My ring finger can't get separated from the middle finger that much.
I pretty much suffer from all these . Been playing for about six months and hitting level 5 on my current online crutch/classes . Some things iron themselves out as you progress because you need some tech as you begin to play more difficult beginner stuff . Im not moving my rested thumb across the strings as much and reaching with plucking fingers instead as an example of being more efficient. Flying fingers are way out control for me and my pinkie likes to pretend lm a snob drinking a cup of tea when not fretting . My pointer finger has a permanent dent in it from smashing it into the fret board …. And it all just gets worse as I’m moving into more difficult and faster playing . On the lift one finger thing, my ring finger is clearly not connected to my brain! It’s time to go to technique hell I guess. As a reference, I can play about half of first 50 songs playlist to 90%ish of the song quickly, but may need to spend a decent amount of time working out the more challenging parts and playing the entire song . Thanks Josh for your efforts and vids, see you at bass buzz in near future.
the best exercice
You guys should make a video about punk or grunge bass. I feel like there’s not enough of that content on yt, besides a few couple videos. Punk bass is cool too.
hi Ryo
yo someone recognized the pfp :)
3:43 Sounds like the Taxman bassline by the beatles
Because it is
Great shirt!!!! 🎶💚🌞🙏🌻😁
Hi Josh, do you still answer questions on your BassBuzz lesson forum or do you answer questions here?
Great shirt 🔥
Lvl 4 is especially helpful with songs like “prisoner” by dua lipa 🤘🏽
Super cool stuff
Did level 1 again today and realised I really don’t like to practice with headphones.
When using headphones I don’t hear the small fret buzzing when pressure or finger placement isn’t quite right as those don’t transmit through the amp.
I’m feeling like a real bassist after dominating this video
Very cool. I'm just beginning as bassist: as far as base on the Loopz - Drum Loops! can I choose whatever melody in 150 bpm? thanks!
Thanks
I am learning both guitar and bass. Will these techniques work for guitar too?
What do you have to say about a bass with a short scale for a guitarist? Is it worthy of attention?
I mostly play a regular guitar, but there was a period when I played bass until we got a bass player. Now I sometimes fill in for the bass player when he's not available. But the problem is that at home I have an old 4-string bass with a short scale, with strings high above the neck (I tried fixing them, but they're still high), and it's falling apart, and for performances we have a good 5-string bass. It's very inconvenient. I want to buy a 4-string bass with a short scale so that I can play the instrument I'm used to playing at home (maybe Harley Benton MV-4MSB). I'd also like to record it at home sometimes as a bass.
Are there any pitfalls to avoid being deceived by the convenience and compactness?
Me who has never owned a bass:
"Damn this is crazy, I hope I don't do these"
Hey, I'm trying to learn this. I just have a question about pressure: Are you placing your finger on the string or forcing the string down against the neck 🤔 I've been trying to figure it out😅
Guess you answered in the video 😂
Sarah has a nice Talman! I sure love mine.
Hi great video! Quick question, in the pdf exercises , level 2, why are some fingers alternating(1&2) but sometimes its not? (1 &1)
I'm just confused with right hand fingering.
I suffered from flying fingers for forever, hopefully this will ground them
Aaa for the plucking I just can’t seem to get my index to do a soft tone … for middle I can do both but index is too annoying
I’ve started practicing Paranoid by Black Sabbath, there’s that section where Geezer Butler plays split finger section. I’ve practiced that section for a month and I feel like I’m improving until I play the song at full speed, then I’m all over the place.😅. Just practicing these skills alone will help a lot. However there is one more technique that you should touch on, that’s actually hitting the frets clean. That’s my biggest obstacle, I can reach the fret area fine but actually pressing the string to the fret without stumbling is where I go off the rails. 😢. It feels like I’m riding a Crazy 🚂 at that point.😂😂😂
Josh I have a major issue
When I try to play Hot Water by Level 42 at the original tempo, my shoulder starts hurting terribly after a few seconds
Have you ever experienced this?
I think it’s a technique issue but it only ever happens with that song
0:16 I’m literally holding that bass rn 😭
