I been obsessed with this game since i first rented it at my local video store, thank you for this in depth video it was very well put together and explained. Which makes me love this game even more, I still play it to this day!
I still have to finish my high Chaos Frame run and recruit Destin and all that...I'm about to be at Liedal again so that will be a good test of chaos frame
"Around my house the term game of the year had a different meaning" You weren't the only one dude... and in my case, being the youngest of 3 kids, I never even got to pick the games. And speaking of game of the year, coincidentally my personal game of 2024 was Unicorn Overlord, the first ogre battle-like we've seen in decades. Loved that game.
There's been so much hype about Unicorn Overlord, especially in discussions around Ogre Battle games. I'm gonna have to check it out tonight after work
Ogre Battle and Unicorn Overlord have the same composer too, amongst others. It's very, very obvious when the 'Heroic Stage' from Unicorn Overlord's OST sounds like a modern recreation from 'Accretion Disk' from Ogre Battle 64's OST. Listen to either for roughly five to ten seconds and it's obvious. When I heard that song playing Unicorn Overlord I had to pause to look up the composer for the game immediately because it triggered such a good wave of nostalgia. Wouldn't surprise me if other people from the Ogre Battle 64 team worked on Unicorn Overlord.
I've only played like 3 hours but I loved the music in the first tutorial battle with the Queen. Made me think of something you might find in FFXIV. Love games that don't skimp on the music.
ogre battle 64 became one of my favorite games of all time, and it was all due to a magazine of my country that detailed the dragoon quest on it, that really set me up to play the game and i still replay it to this day. It was actually refreshing to also see a more political story, since jrpgs or tactics games at that time were more akin to have a demon lord or god moving the plot, so it was interesting to see a story were it was just nations trying to seize this ultimate power without realizing what that would really mean 🤔, cant wait for more content i subscribed
You should play Vagrant Story, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy 12. Those games have a more political based plot based on actual world events. At the time. Anything from the Ivalice story arc tends to be more serious.
@@MrDarkAvitar from those i think i only have not played vagrant story, but yeah tactis ogre and final fantasy it was a shame that masuno couldnt complete the development of 12 🤔but overall ivallice is a really good setting
Yeah I heard he left the project like halfway through development. And he has only worked sparingly since then, but I know he helped with the Ivalice raids in FFXIV which is pretty sweet.
Amazing work. I'm so glad that the legacy of this game still lives on. Thanks for making this, the game absolutely needs more content made about it, especially since it's one of the few political fictions that explores the concept of power and revolution so in-depth. Thank God for Ogre Battle 64
Yeah I very much enjoyed it, and I know I'm not quite done with it yet. I'd say I've put a solid 60 hours in of active play so far. But I want to do a Biske/Carthe/Paul playthrough
Thank you for the video! I simultaneously have very strong memories of this game while also remembering very little of it. I beat it through to completion when I was 14, but the only part of the story I remembered is that there was a revolution, and a floating evil baby that spoke with an old man's voice at the end. I liked the game so much that I wrote a review of it for a friend's geocities website. No one else around me even knew the game existed, much less played it. I have no recollection of what I wrote, and was never able to find the website when I went looking again, years later, but I do still own the game. What a weird time.
This is one of the greatest retrospectives I've ever watched. I would love to see more obscure RPGs covered, it's seriously the most relaxing thing ever.
My all time favorite game! Really hope they remake/remaster it sooner or later! Great video! I also recommend Unicorn Overlord! Fell Seal is pretty good too!
I hope they do since they did it for Tactics Ogre as well. I'm gonna pick up Unicorn Overlord tonight, there's way too many people telling me how good it is
I've been saying for years this game needs a remaster with an updated UI and QoL improvements. This is one of my favorite childhood games. Thank you for making this video!
Ogre battle 64 is the best game. My first playthrough as a child had my best friend turned into a Zombie. A main plot character gone in an instant. Absent from all cutscenes afterwards. Blew my freaking mind. Still never seen something like it.
The Ogre Battle saga was so underappreciated, both the Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre games told two halves of a captivating story that never had the opportunity to come together. While I always felt OB64 was too easy, the combat system was still genius and it saddens me that it was never really seen again until Unicorn Overlord years later. Also, at the end of the Prologue, the fall guy who is executed is actually Stabilo, the boss of the very first mission. (the official OB64 strategy revealed it to me when I was younger and it blew my mind lol)
Just want to say thank you for this video. This game was such a core part of my childhood, full of fond memories. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with RPGs. I think I managed to beat it once or twice as a kid, but this video has inspired me to pick up a copy and try to beat it again!
2:37:48 oh man the biggest draw of Ogre Battle 64 is the organizing screen. I swear I spent more time there than in the battles. Organizing equipment, teams, classes, etc. Anyway I really liked the multiple endings. And the idea of the game trying to have you realize you're acting like a warlord terrorizing the countryside. I think it needed to exemplify the difference between capturing and liberating a town more, but effectively it's the difference between sending someone to Parley and sending the Mountain that Rides to kill anyone who opposed your occupation.
that's where I spent the most time in my second playthrough, editing was like scrubbing through 30 minutes of organizing screen, 20 minute battle, 40 minutes organizing screen, I didn't do myself any favors
@@Sevoran117 it's a really good game, allot darker than FFT and seemingly Ogre battle more focused on the political rather than the supernatural elements, the dialogue is some of the best in any game I've ever played, the storytelling and multiple choices are excellent as well as the soundtrack! It can be a pretty difficult game there is definitely a big emphasis on the tactical nounce and I think it also depends on which version of the game you play, I think the latest version :Reborn caps levelling so its harder to grind and use brute force but it doe's feature voice acting which is pretty neat but id personally go the psp version or the original.
A game I have started as a child from blockbuster multiple times and then later in life multiple times as an adult but just never able to finish. With that said it still holds a fond place in my heart as a N64 kid
I really appreciate the time you took to make this retrospective video. I've been spriting for a tactics-style game that I've been building in Godot, and this is great content to have on a second monitor to listen and reflect on while I'm working. Great stuff.
Man this game is amazing, I never got to finish it as a kid because we had to rent from Blockbuster a weekend only. I ended up getting it done on an emulator years and years later, really was a one of a kind experience especially on the N64.
I really like how long the battles take. Also I used to rent FF7 every weekend until the shop owner just gave it to me lol. She said I was the only one who ever checked it out. It was a small town though. No telling how much I spent on it.
Thanks dude, I did not realize until recording voice lines how long it was going to be lol. Thought I may have overcooked it so to speak. but there was a lot to say, so...hope you enjoyed it!
Damn! UA-cam has been killing it lately with recommending all of these obscure, lesser known channels. I’ve been getting blessed with tons of good channels by unknown content creators like yourself, and the quality of your videos are amazing! Awesome stuff, man! Edit: also, not trying to be offensive when I say “lesser known”… it’s just nice to find great channels that don’t already have millions of subs and seem to have no real passion for the content they’re making. You clearly do! While I do hope you get to a million subs, I just wanted to clarify what I meant by that. I’m loving these newer, less commercial channels.
Haha I know exactly what you mean my dude! No offense taken here! Thanks for checking it out I'm glad you liked it! And not to be a creeper but I saw you're also subbed to Esfand, Asmon, Steak and Eggs and all that, I'm into all them too lol. Maybe that's why this video was recommended
Great video! Such an underrated game! Summer of 2001, this was all my brother and I played. Being a dumb kid and not understanding the mechanics, I got a Chaos Frame of 0 on my first play through. Definitely the first time a game was like, "Hey, you won! In exchange, you'll be banished from the kingdom and erased from history... oh, and here's a devil baby."
Finally replaying OB64 after seeing this video. Been meaning to do it for years and enjoying it quite a bit. Look forward to finishing your video once my play through is done.
Thank you! I spent probably 60 ish actual play hours over 2 playthroughs and I still didn't see all the endings or unlock all the units. Pretty hefty time commitment but it's very fun
Great work, good sir. I found your video by pure chance on my UA-cam feed and I clicked immediately I also subbed as well before even finishing this video. This is my favorite game from the N64 and I have replayed it so many times. You and Warren Report do such great justice to this series, and I am in the camp of people who wishes it had more attention than it has. A perfect modern spiritual successor to the series is Unicorn Overlord, and I recommend it. Keep up the great work.
Almost 3 hour video documentary about one of the final games in a series that essentially is the grand daddy of FFT by a new (to me) UA-camr ? Sign me up, Jerry
Sweet, another long video on a Nintendo 64 classic! Ogre Battle 64 is my favorite game on Nintendo 64. It had a poor release window, right next to Majora's Mask and in the same year of Pokemon Gold and Silver, the release of the Playstation 2 and the announcement of the Nintendo Gamecube. Obviously it went under the radar of many people, because on top of that, Atlus had problems with chip shortage during the first weeks of release, which made it hard to find the game back in the day. Can't wait for your future reviews of Quest 64, Hybrid Heaven and Paper Mario.
1:54:54 I think the blue sash is part of indigan culture. It shows Magnus clings to it as a way of grounding himself, of guiding himself. Same with his braid.
OB64 is one of my favorite games of all time. Playing through tactics ogre reborn makes me wish they actually kept this series going. Theres so much potential here.
I only ever played Tactics Ogre but it's incredible how much this game feeds into Final Fantasy Tactics, Triangle Strategy and Unicorn Overlord. I appreciate how in depth this video is.
I appreciate you checking it out. Yeah looking into the history made me want to play FF Tactics again, I never beat it as a kid. It was cool to see how much influence Matsuno had on other games like FF12 and the Ivalice raids in FFXIV. Dude has a crazy resume.
My favorite original N64 title. Starcraft 64 got more playtime but also has the benefit of being Starcraft. Anyway, replaying the game recently with my adult brain and knowledge of the Snes game, I can actually understand and enjoy the plot. Really, my only problem with the game is alignment management. My magic users became too lawful to promote and the options for reversing that are incredibly slow, barring an item dupe exploit...
Dude I had the exact problem with my Wizard. He was ultra lawful. Unfortunate because he was very powerful and I spent a lot of chapter 3 trying to lower him by sticking him with a lich, but I couldn't get him down enough to promote him.
I know dozens of other people have said the same thing, but OB64 is ny absolute favorite game and it makes me so happy to see it get any attention at all (much less a 2.5 hour video.)
I really didn't think it was going to be that long. I just recorded my lines, popped them into Premiere and was shocked to see it was over three hours lol. So I had to edit it down some. Still left in a little more than was necessary probably, but oh well. Thanks for watching!
i played this game a lot when i was a kid, didn't understood most of the mechanics and i didn't speak english all that well but i somehow brute force my way into beating it. I missed so much content though, most of the sidequests were stuff i didn't even know about but it was fun seeing how every playthrough you stumble upon different things and the story events had lot of variations even if i didn't know what triggered it
@Sevoran117 Since it has been 2 decades, probably a blind mid to high chaos frame to get back into it. Maybe I'll work on getting a dragoon for Magnus's group (absolutely inspired by that damage) and a princess for one of my primary groups.
I really loved your decision to play the game mostly blind but still edit in all the information about the various options - I honestly haven't seen that before. Most videos are either a perfect run by an expert or a sorta aimless Let's Play lol, but this dual style was very fun to watch. Thanks! I hope to check out the RetroAchievements set of this game soon which would point me towards all of the special unlockables you mentioned.
I was really glad for that guide on my second playthrough. And it's broken down so well. I couldn't believe how many fan made resources there were for this game. Especially the site with the interactive maps that show where all the hidden items are
I think over time I had Mario, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Star Wars Podracing (or whatever it was called), Ocarina, Majora's Mask....and that may be it
Your use of the Tootsie Pop owl clip solidifies your style in my eyes. I was already subbed and would give you another if I could. Fantastic breakdown so far. I had to pause to make this note because it caught me so off guard and delighted me to no end. Thank you for your effort and your thoughts!
I am kind of oddly satisfied that my younger self had good taste in games. I remember playing this when I was 10 and it has honestly stuck with me decades later. A lot of what you said actually is very similar to what my memories are. Good video enjoyed it all the way through.
People always recommend Unicorn Overlord but for me the true successor is Symphony of War. It's basically just indie Ogre Battle with a dash of Fire Emblem. A must play for fans of the genre anyway
@@Sevoran117 I'll share my thoughts (as an old AF Ogre Battle fan who was playing them in the 90s) on these "spiritual successors" -- For me, Unicorn Overlord was all style, no substance. It was a pretty good game, I liked it, but it was WAY too easy and got pretty boring. Similar problem to Ogre Battle, except here, the story and characters couldn't carry it. In fact it was even easier than OB64 due to the way battle information is presented. You will literally never lose a battle unless you choose to. I had to drag myself through it towards the end, and I was playing on the hardest difficulty. Good game, but left me dissatisfied and wanting more. So I found out about Symphony of War and played that right after it, and MAN it was such a massive pallet cleanse. The game lacks the admittedly amazing art / production that Unicorn has, and the story was also meh, but the actual gameplay is the best in the genre. You would never know it looking at screenshots and trailers. It's masterfully crafted and deceptively deep. Play it on "Ludicrous" difficulty on your first playthrough. You will have to "solve" every encounter and actually engage with unit mechanics. For me, Symphony of War is the new top dog in this genre. It's really, really good. Unicorn was meh.
I think the "damage meter" thing is going to drive me nuts. But I've only played like two hours or so. And a viewer recommended upping the difficulty as well, seems a lot of folks agree it gets pretty easy. I'll have to play some more of it before I say much more, but so far I'm still glad I started playing it. I'll look into Symphony of War after work today for sure, I appreciate all of the insight my dude
I agree that we need more Ogre Battle games. I heard somewhere the original plan was to have 9 separate "acts" that would serve as their own stand alone games, but unfortunately i don't have a source. I would guess the main reason we don't have more games is because sales of the series pretty much cut in half after the second game and never really recovered.
Actually the main reason is probably because of Matsuno. He was the force behind creating Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre, but he left Quest to work for SquareSoft and the other games in the series were developed without him, and they are often never really talked about. Ogre Battle 64 for instance had no participation from Matsuno. He then worked on Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, FFTA, and left half way through working on FF12. Which means everything else related to Ivalice was made without him. A similar thing happened with Xenosaga. Xenosaga episode 1 was the brainchild of two people who were completely uninvolved in episode 2 and brought back as only a supervisory role for episode 3. Likewise with Drackengard, Drackengard 2 is the black sheep of the series because it has nothing to do with Yoko Taro who was responsible for making Drackengard 1 as weird as it was. It kind of goes to show that brand name alone can't carry a series. You need the creative talent. However if the talent is hard to work with or unavailable, it's often better to just start a new IP.
@@kidrobot. Actually while the series did go on, they failed without the original talent. Drackengard 2 is the only game in the series not headed by Yoko Taro. People hated Xenosaga 2 and so Bandai Namco brought back a lot of the staff from Xenosaga 1 to do Xenosaga 3. Even so the series was cut short and is quite a mess. The developers were later purchased by Nintendo and now they work on Xenoblade. Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings is seen as an awful game by most people, it's a direct sequel to FF12 by the way. Also most people dislike Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, which had no input from Matsuno either. With regard to FFTA2, I actually think it's a fantastic game. Even better than Final Fantasy Tactics in all aspects aside from story. However, the opinion of a handful of people like myself does not a successful game make. My point being, when they try to carry on the brand with new talent, it always falls flat. Sometimes the brand is strong enough to warrant trying to get the old talent back but other times it just seems to be too much of a hassle. Funnily enough the producer behind Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross wanted to make more Chrono games, but it seems like square wasn't on board. So he went and made his own. The mobile game "Another Eden" which you can also play on steam, was created by the guy responsible for Chrono Trigger. It's not quite as high budget but it is a spiritual sequel/remake in that sense.
@xxJing you are so wrong on so many levels. i got the point you were trying to make. but as i said, all of those games carried on except for vagrant story. so name branding is important. also you might want to check the scores for those games. it's not bad, only the vocal minority hate them
Love this game. Every couple of years i replay it. Probably my favorite game period. In high school i had aspirations of developing a graphic novel of it. Didnt get too far, sadly. Used to work with a guy at a screen print shop that named his son Magnus. Turns out he was also a fan of OB64.
I have seen the cover art for Unicorn Overload so many times in the Microsoft store and have been interested in it for a while. After this video I will definitely be picking it up now. I wish I didn't miss out on the ogre battle series growing up it would have been one of my all time favorites as a kid.
I sometimes rewatch your videos just to listen to what you say about these games, i remember renting aidyns i didn't get far in it because I didn't know what i was doing plus i also had a ps1 so i was definitely a sony fan boy so i was more used to smoothness of say final Fantasy 7, and i purchsed this game since i rented march of the black queen so i knew something about this game so i really wanted it, especially for the fact that at the time paper Mario was really the only good rpg on the N64 as i thought at that age, i wish i still had my copy, thank you for this retrospective
Thanks for watching! I know my first playthrough was rough because I refused to level Dexterity before the Kitarak fight. And I never used stat potions or anything like that. Wasn't a fan of spellcasting either. So I only used like 10% of the combat system haha
The Ogre Battle Duo were such awesome games. I chose a screen name based on, I think, a misspelling of the Fire Goddess from the SNES manual way back when.
The variety of things that can happen in a run always blows my mind a little. I was watching the Lotaeri run, and you fight the king but Ankiseth knocks him into a chaos gate and they both vanish, and I had no idea that was even an option. I tried an all-women run recently, and I got to face Yumil in a group with all four Knights of Danika with him, and that is tough to handle if you don't have cataphracts or paladins on the front line. My favorite endings are the ones you get if you don't have any Xenobians or Ankiseth, but you do have a high chaos frame. The Carth+Paul+Sheen ending and the Leidel+Meredia+Biske "Werewolf Wedding" one. I think what surprised me the most about doing a high chaos frame, no Xenobian/Ankiseth run was how many events get reframed. If Ankiseth is with you, they really frame Biske as a serial killer your father stopped. But if you recruit Biske and take him to the churches, all of the nuns treat Biske as a hero since he's the one who stopped your father from murdering all of the religious people in those lands. And since Asnabel the Iron Hammer and Hugo the Tactician were with your father at the time, kinda makes you wonder if they were all pretty rotten. March of the Black Queen is a lot more stressful, at least for me, because there's no fatigue bar and everything is running at max speed. In reality, though, I got the best ending without too much trouble. If you're loving the series, it's a good one to play next just so you catch all the references. Though Reborn is still my favorite of the series. Replaying OB64 after Reborn, you'll catch a lot of references you missed before. Yumil's forbidden magic, the apocrypha, being important to Reborn. Comments on Leidel's stage if you revisit it about the civil war happening just off the coast, which is Reborn. Stuff like that. Anyways, good video. And always good to play OB64 before Unicorn Overlord. I feel like it's tough to go the other way because of how Unicorn improves on the gameplay loop (if not the story at all) over OB64.
I didn't know that about Biske, but I was a little bit suspicious over Asnabel and Ankiseths military history because of how vague they were about it earlier in the game. But it goes to show how the victors get to control the narrative of history. Poor Biske :/ I recruited him on my low chaos frame run but I completely forgot to put him in and honestly he was an afterthought. Kinda regretting that now that I know more about him. I think I'm going to give Reborn a shot after Unicorn Overlord. I've heard it has a level cap that is a little controversial though, but I hear it makes the game more fair.
A lot of this sounds like Final Fantasy Tactics 😂 Matsuno really had a specific flavor of storytelling he liked and ran with it This video has me really interested in playing the game though, it looks really cool
He did! Amazing writer. I never finished FFTactics as a kid though. The combat kind of annoyed me for some reason. But now I have the itch to really dig into it.
Easily one of my favorite games ever, how i wish we got a sequel, especially considering the good ending finishes on a cliffhanger that seems to lead to the conclusion of the entire saga.
The setting is like a cross between Final Fantasy Tactics and Suikoden., Though the gameplay is wholly unique. At least for Ogre Battle 64 and March of the Black Queen. Tactics Ogre is basically a proto FFT.
I still remember playing the original ogre battle on snes also a really really good game was super hard to find a copy of it back in the day took many trips to locate one
Fell's Seal: Arbiter's Mark is a game inspired by these games and Suikoden and more, with a system that does justice to what we saw in FF Tactics. I actually avoided the game, thinking I would be unable to ever make my own games due to how much I had in mind became so in the game. It took minutes to see this strongly. Know what others think can now be an inspiration to still try. I just wish I did while my Mom was alive to see it finally. She tried to throw away a notebook I had with much of my notes for the game over twenty years ago, so seeing the creation real still matters.
My parents spent so much money renting this game for me when I was a kid. I eventually bought my own copy on e-bay and paid over $100. Worth every penny. No game has ever hit quite the same notes for me - not even March of the Black Queen or Unicorn Overlord. Both are good though. With Meredia, the game seems to take the levels of the last map you did and give her a Level appropriate to that map. It doesn't check only story maps though. If you do area exploration in a low level area like Tenne Plains, then take the Meredia mission, she'll be a lower level. This is actually beneficial, since she'll get Siren level-ups for the whole game and end up leveling quite quickly until she catches up. The Lodis Knights teleporting out seems to be a reference to the Transferring/Shiftstones from Tactics Ogre. NPCs and enemy bosses would teleport out of battle with them if the story needed them alive. Think a Quit Gate from this game but for a single person.
I was hoping one day a video like this would pop up after Dunkey made fun of it in a Scott the Woz video. Now to learn whether or not this was one of the N64's good RPGs or if it goes in the Quest 64 pile.
I really wish Sqeenix would re-port or remake this game. Both prior entries we had are great in their own way, but Person of Lordly Caliber left one of the biggest impressions on me as a kid with its world building and story. I used to freak out when dead party members would turn into zombies at the end of a mission🧟♂️
2:15 that's second time this week a video game retrospective/essay youtuber drops a 2+ hour video and mentions that he doesn't know what a NeoGeo Pocket Color is, huh

And speaking of game of the year, coincidentally my personal game of 2024 was Unicorn Overlord, the first ogre battle-like we've seen in decades. Loved that game.
There's been so much hype about Unicorn Overlord, especially in discussions around Ogre Battle games. I'm gonna have to check it out tonight after work
@@Sevoran117 It's good as hell.
Fantastic work! Just got really excited seeing that run time.
@coffeepotato - Huge fan of yours and so glad you found this video!!
@seankinney4312 Thank You for the support, and Thank You for making the best OB64 video out there!
ogre battle 64 became one of my favorite games of all time, and it was all due to a magazine of my country that detailed the dragoon quest on it, that really set me up to play the game and i still replay it to this day.
@@kaiseravm vagrant story was epic for PS1 game easily. One of my top games. Very unique battle system for its time.
@@Sevoran117 yeah it really shows how he really cares about a setting he created and i hope if there is a next ogre battle game he is there to 🤔
Love that this vid is picking up traction. This game deserves love
Agreed. Hope square revives it someday.
One of my fondest memories was playing this during an exceptionally cold winter
Amazing work. I'm so glad that the legacy of this game still lives on. Thanks for making this, the game absolutely needs more content made about it, especially since it's one of the few political fictions that explores the concept of power and revolution so in-depth.
Thank God for Ogre Battle 64
Yeah I very much enjoyed it, and I know I'm not quite done with it yet. I'd say I've put a solid 60 hours in of active play so far. But I want to do a Biske/Carthe/Paul playthrough
Currently playing through this game, it's been a real treat so far. Looking forward to this retrospective! Loved every entry to this series so far.
I really enjoyed it, still need to finish a full Zenobian playthrough though.
I know I wish they would continue the story. Floating evil baby would be an S tier antagonist.
This is one of the greatest retrospectives I've ever watched. I would love to see more obscure RPGs covered, it's seriously the most relaxing thing ever.
Thanks dude, yeah its the kind of stuff I like to watch so I figured I would put more of it out there.
Thanks for watching! I hope they give it the Reborn treatment. I can't decide if I should play Reborn or the original Tactics Ogre first though.
Ogre battle 64 is the best game. My first playthrough as a child had my best friend turned into a Zombie. A main plot character gone in an instant. Absent from all cutscenes afterwards. Blew my freaking mind. Still never seen something like it.
Huge video! Thats nice, will see it slowly, thanks for it 🎉
Well done sir!
The UA-cam algorithm gods have blessed me with this video and it is incredible! Great breakdown and I am shocked you don't have more subs, keep it up!
Praise the gods! And I will, it's quite fun.
Literally my favorite game
I think it needed to exemplify the difference between capturing and liberating a town more, but effectively it's the difference between sending someone to Parley and sending the Mountain that Rides to kill anyone who opposed your occupation.
that's where I spent the most time in my second playthrough, editing was like scrubbing through 30 minutes of organizing screen, 20 minute battle, 40 minutes organizing screen, I didn't do myself any favors
yes!!! Seriously fantastic video, instant sub and support! This game is one I adore and you did it justice!
Thanks dude! I'm sad I missed it back in the day, but it holds up really well. Crazy fun.
I've awlays been more of FFT fan and didn't know much about Ogre battle. Great video, this game always eluded me.
Fantastic overview. Probably the best OB64 video on YT.
That's very kind. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Oh hell yeah. This format is similar to Majuular, and I'm all up for more of it. And you're damn good at it too!
I freaking love Majuular. Thanks for saying that!
I haven't played this one, I do love Tactics ogre and other Matsuno games so I know I've gotta get onto it, great video
I'm really curious about Tactics Ogre. I honestly think I would like it the most.
I appreciate you taking the time to watch. Good luck with your game!
i love the look of the 3D sprites, the cartoony/toy like look is awesome.
Same, and I just realized I never addressed how cool the models look lol. Oh well.
@@Sevoran117 loved the retrospective nonetheless, you did great.
A two and a half long video essay about a game I've never heard of?! Sign me UP. 🔥🔥🔥
It was meant to be shorter but I suck at condensing my words lol
Oh man, can't wait for your retrospective of the other 63 games!
take my upvote and get out.
If only! 😂
I remember buying this game for 99.99 at eb Games in new Brunswick Canada, I really enjoyed the music, even the graphics and the story 🙂
Insanely high quality work. Bravo
Thanks dude. It was a kick ass game.
Love this recap! It’s always nice to see a channel cover a niche cult classic!
It's what I like to watch too.
Oh hey a 2.5hr video unlocking core memories about one of my favorite N64 games
Amazing video. Congrats. Great see this franchise getting some well deserved love
Thanks dude. I'm pretty new to the franchise but its awesome
Fantastic Video! You've inspired me to play me to March of the Black Queen and now my holiday season is going to be filled tactics and ogres.
This is my second favorite game! Glad to see someone talking about it!
What's your first favorite?
@Sevoran117 Grandia
I want an Aeneas Gallant/Devil Child showdown in the next game so badly
solid video, love the effort you put into it!
Thanks! There's just so much to say about it, and I left so much unsaid. And yet even more that I had not discovered. Truly amazing game.
Just had this on for an hour for my walk, very well done and can't wait to keep listening.
Thanks for listening! Hope your walk was good.
Finally replaying OB64 after seeing this video. Been meaning to do it for years and enjoying it quite a bit. Look forward to finishing your video once my play through is done.
I will never play this game but with commentary this immaculate, I won't need to. Beautiful video brother!
Thank you! I spent probably 60 ish actual play hours over 2 playthroughs and I still didn't see all the endings or unlock all the units. Pretty hefty time commitment but it's very fun
And here's to hoping all that hard work pays off!!
Warren Report was a HUGE help in gathering some of the info I needed. And his lore videos made my OB64 playthrough way more fun and engaging for sure.
@@Sevoran117I have his lore videos playlist saved to listen to, while working at home and at work.
Almost 3 hour video documentary about one of the final games in a series that essentially is the grand daddy of FFT by a new (to me) UA-camr ?
Sign me up, Jerry
Thanks for checking it out!
I feel like there's a chance. They remade 7 after all. And maybe Reborn was a way to gauge interest.
This game was a big deal when I was a kid. I've played through it countless times. Love it dearly.
Super impressed with the a Time for Us name drop. My sister's favorite song and one of mine.
It was stuck in my head from high school and I finally remembered what it was from like 3 years ago
As a kid who poured a ton of time into this game I was really sad to see it wasn't a bigger series state side. Thanks for the deep dive and memories.
Thanks for watching! I wish it had continued releases as well. I was really enjoying the story.
I missed so much content though, most of the sidequests were stuff i didn't even know about but it was fun seeing how every playthrough you stumble upon different things and the story events had lot of variations even if i didn't know what triggered it
Okay. I'm convinced. Time to replay
What kind of run are you going for?
@Sevoran117 Since it has been 2 decades, probably a blind mid to high chaos frame to get back into it. Maybe I'll work on getting a dragoon for Magnus's group (absolutely inspired by that damage) and a princess for one of my primary groups.
@philkovach948 once Kenny got Chaldholg he started carrying. It was almost comical
I once did a Magnus group only run that was probably the easiest playthrough I did. A dragoon will probably feel the same
I really loved your decision to play the game mostly blind but still edit in all the information about the various options - I honestly haven't seen that before.
Especially the site with the interactive maps that show where all the hidden items are
One of the best games in the system. I played the hell out of it. Great pick, man!
I owned like... maybe four games total for the N64. This was absolutely one of them
I think over time I had Mario, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Star Wars Podracing (or whatever it was called), Ocarina, Majora's Mask....and that may be it
Your use of the Tootsie Pop owl clip solidifies your style in my eyes. I was already subbed and would give you another if I could. Fantastic breakdown so far. I had to pause to make this note because it caught me so off guard and delighted me to no end. Thank you for your effort and your thoughts!
Haha thanks I think that commercial aired on PBS alot as well as Nick Jr. So it's burned into my brain.
Ive watched 3 of ur videos now and just subbed. Really like your stuff. Keep it up
Omg just realized you only have 3 videos. How disappointing lol I went to Binge more. Waiting for the next one.
Thank you my dude!
My favorite game on the N64 and one of the best strategy RPGs. Great video.
I am kind of oddly satisfied that my younger self had good taste in games. I remember playing this when I was 10 and it has honestly stuck with me decades later. A lot of what you said actually is very similar to what my memories are. Good video enjoyed it all the way through.
Thanks for checking it out!
People always recommend Unicorn Overlord but for me the true successor is Symphony of War. It's basically just indie Ogre Battle with a dash of Fire Emblem. A must play for fans of the genre anyway
Ok that's interesting, I've had a few other people say Symphony of War as well. I'm glad there's lots of options out there.
I just started UO two nights ago but I'll throw this one on the list too. Thanks!
@@Sevoran117 I'll share my thoughts (as an old AF Ogre Battle fan who was playing them in the 90s) on these "spiritual successors" --
For me, Unicorn Overlord was all style, no substance.
I would guess the main reason we don't have more games is because sales of the series pretty much cut in half after the second game and never really recovered.
because its not that great tbh
@@xxJing but most of those series went on afterwards minus vagrant story. so brand name is powerful to an extent
This game needs a Port/Remaster/Remake ASAP.
It's the best game on the N64.
My favorite has always been Aidyn Chronicles but now I'm reconsidering. There's just something about old games.
This game 100% deserves a remaster, and yeah, we need another game in the saga!
That would be sick, or at least bring it to switch online.
I have a little faith since they made Reborn
I have seen the cover art for Unicorn Overload so many times in the Microsoft store and have been interested in it for a while. After this video I will definitely be picking it up now. I wish I didn't miss out on the ogre battle series growing up it would have been one of my all time favorites as a kid.
Same dude same. I'm so sad I missed out on it. This would have blown my mind.
dude this christmas line hit , we even had an ice storm that year here too !
Damn. I always liked this game but didn't realize how savage the story is. Absolutely based and friend/enemy pilled.
The cute pixel graphic style games always have the darkest lore haha
Great video, I really need to go play some OB now
The Ogre Battle Duo were such awesome games. I chose a screen name based on, I think, a misspelling of the Fire Goddess from the SNES manual way back when.
My SN's were usually some mispelled form of Sephiroth or L3g0LasSX23
You only have 3 videos and the quality is already THIS HIGH????
Dang dude!! This channel is going places, let me tell you....
Thanks dude! That would be pretty sick.
A lot of this sounds like Final Fantasy Tactics 😂 Matsuno really had a specific flavor of storytelling he liked and ran with it
This video has me really interested in playing the game though, it looks really cool
He did! Amazing writer. I never finished FFTactics as a kid though. The combat kind of annoyed me for some reason. But now I have the itch to really dig into it.
Cool video
Thanks my dude
Easily one of my favorite games ever, how i wish we got a sequel, especially considering the good ending finishes on a cliffhanger that seems to lead to the conclusion of the entire saga.
I gotta know what happens with the demon baby.
I've never played any of the Ogre games but they seem really cool may need to emualte them at some point. good video
Thanks! Honestly I think I would enjoy Tactics Ogre the most. I've only played the first two levels so far but it's legit
The setting is like a cross between Final Fantasy Tactics and Suikoden., Though the gameplay is wholly unique. At least for Ogre Battle 64 and March of the Black Queen. Tactics Ogre is basically a proto FFT.
Masterpiece
Are you a Hogs fan by any chance?
I still remember playing the original ogre battle on snes also a really really good game was super hard to find a copy of it back in the day took many trips to locate one
I just looked it up on ebay after you said that and they are all around like 250 dollars. I wonder if you could get them cheaper from Japan...
oh hell yeah, a man after my own heart, ty youtube algorithm faeries
I DO believe in faeries! I do! I do!
This video has made me want to play it
Have fun!
Ooh! New vid!
I was hoping one day a video like this would pop up after Dunkey made fun of it in a Scott the Woz video. Now to learn whether or not this was one of the N64's good RPGs or if it goes in the Quest 64 pile.
I like the art style of Tactics Ogre character art a lot. Always have. That's what made it stand out for me initially.
Oh I started freaking out too when I realized I couldn't get those people back! Had 8 zombies or so my first run lol..
2:15 that's second time this week a video game retrospective/essay youtuber drops a 2+ hour video and mentions that he doesn't know what a NeoGeo Pocket Color is, huh
like the Dreamcast it could connect with, the ngpc died too soon
This game is whay got my into strategies games and tabletop game.s man this was a blast from the past.
tbh tabletop games are my favorite way to immerse into fantasy settings. The director for Aidyn Chronicles actually runs a DnD game set in that world but I think you have to pay for a seat lol
