Saw your review and decided to give the game a run. I have some good language experience so I was able to run through it while using the guide when needed. Comparing it to your runthrough of the game, there were a few interesting things I found from my run. 1. Demon Negotiations: They have some pretty funny conversations. Sometimes, even Rei gets into the conversation and says some funny lines. For example, when negotiating with Angel, she will ask if Rei is your girlfriend and if you say yes, Rei flips out, but if you say no, Angel starts saying maybe she'll hook up with you, and the two start fighting, with Angel insulting Rei's outfit and giving her money to buy new shoes. It has some other funny ones like wanting you to dance to thinking your "self-training” is "strawberry hunting "(自己鍛錬 as イチゴ探検). It really make the grueling experience of it alright. That said, getting them to join your team seems random, as no matter how big of stacks you lay down, they can take it and run, even if it's a ridicuous amount. You usually want to keep your offers low enough that they don't get angry, but that you won't cry if they take it and run. They also seem to sometimes give you items or magnitite or even cash if they don't join, although sometimes not very much. The worst part of it is that sometimes they ask for specific items you have no chance of having, and just waste your time. I'd often use the item you can use to save in dungeons to just reload sometimes when I gave way more than I should have even given. Overall, I'd say you weren't unlucky, it's just a tough and unforgiving system. 2. Hard Mode: I played the game on hard mode, and it changes the gave from what sounds like is a cake walk in normal. Boss health is up by 2.0, you take 1.5 times the damage, and the demon compendium's summoning costs are doubled. It turns the game from not needing demons to making them a necessity. I actually like that I need backup, as I wanted to have a good challenge. Easy bosses like Sid become threatening, and normal bosses become a real challenge. The hardest ones were probably Demiurge, hitting hard and freezing my team, the 1st boss in the radio tower, with the 3 hurling multihit electric attacks, and the final boss having a health pool that makes you cry. Overall, it changes the game from something easy to a game where you have to have a plan. I had to bring up the loyalty of my demons to survive boss battles, and having Rei being an offensive magic build really helped me pull through the game, as I maxed her magic by the end of the game and constanly focused on making her a powerhouse. 3. Loyalty tidbits Since Loyalty is rather required in Hard, I found that having gift demons was clearly the way to go, as law loyalty takes a long time, and by the time they become very loyal, they are underleveled for your crew. Not to mention, the AI for them can make them do dumb things, like try to cast spells that don't work and sometimes not help at all. But if you do max out your loyalty, you can actually go to the demon combination place and turn the demon into a weapon or armor. They have set items they will turn into, and they actually are pretty sweet gear, as one of the pieces I got from one I kept on Rei all the way to the end of the game. 4. Dungeons: I mostly agree with what you said with the Dungeons, but a few additional points. -I thought Chinatown wasn't too bad, especially compared to town hall. The non-idicated teleports were fine enough, and the one's with the singal I think were used as a clue, as those ones are the ones that actually lead to the boss. There also isn't any floors to fall through, and you can map out the area eventually with enough exploring, and it is just one big floor. However, this might just be me, as I've heard some of the games came with a map of it due to people getting lost. Plus the warp puzzle solution is kind of mean. -The one dungeon by Kumiko's house is really small. To clear it in 10 seconds is really lucky, but it is that short. -The Hibari Mansion dungeon does suck. It isn't that great. You fall, you warp, you cry a bit. -Yes, City hall sucks. Probably the worst one in the game. You fall, you go through one way doors, and you have to go up and down with little clear direction of which way to go. It's also Very long. You cry a lot. -The final dungeon was pretty nice, but I think I got lucky. It's tough and mean, but not as confusing and tear jerking as city hall. I do like the two mini bosses before the final boss. 5: Conclusion: Honestly, I had a great time. The atmosphere, the gamplay, and all the little touches bring together a good game. I probably will go back and try it again soon, as it was my first Megaten game so far, and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for introducing the game, as I doubt I'd even find it without your video.
I literally JUST started playing Devil Summoner recently. The PSP version specifically because I wanted to see what it was about. Soul Hackers and the Raidou games all look so interesting and the name "Kuzunoha" just kept appearing wherever I looked in this franchise. I saw the name in Persona 2 aswell.
@@Tessodan Not quite, personas are not demons users summon to receive help, but a hip and modern version of the Jungian archetype of the Shadow. You can talk to demons, and summon personas based off their image, but personas and demons cannot be the same thing. You also can't summon multiple personas at once, you can only "wear" one at the time, while devil summoners can fill their party slots with demons. At least that's what I got from playing Innocent Sin!
@@ShadowBaofu Spoiler One of the NPCs in P2 duology is possessed by Kyouji Kuzunoha. He helps out the crew through the game, but doesn't fight himself. He turned him from an unsuccessful dick to the best detective in town. That's the closest we get to them teaming up, though that does imply that the Devil Summoners are in the same world as the Persona users, though Atlus forgot themselves apparently. Edit: Oh wait your name is Shadow Baofu, you probably already know this.
Yeah you tell them! I can have all mighty demons, reincarnation, world destruction by magic. But the most mythical beast of all, a girlfriend? Thats when i draw the line. Come on capcom! Get your game on!
Jesus is actually in Persona 3, as Messiah. He has a cross and crown of thorns. The fact that he's thanatos below the waist is part of the game's theme of redemption being death
@ZX-Gear You pretty much have to apply the "read the room" thing Japanese people have in their culture when addressing other people. It's tough. But with an N4 Japanese level and a dictionary, I managed to recruit a handful , so all hope it's not lost. You can play this game if you have a lot of patience.
Good shit! It's hard to find solid megaten content that doesn't get overly pedantic or rely on shitting on persona. I really fuck with the laid back humor and style of your content, excited to see more!
Really cool to see this. Atlus USA not translating this game is one of their greatest mistakes they've made. I loved Soul hackers and woulda bought its predecessor day one. Great job on the video too dude. Its good to see someone knowledgeable about classic smt, I was really getting tired of hearing brainlet hot takes from people who've obviously never played any game before nocturne, But still think they're experts
Dude. I'm not even kidding. This is some of the best content on UA-cam. Breaking into games which are primarily in Japan and delving deep into them is fascinating. Whatever new Experiences you create, I'll be here, because by YHWH, this stuff is good.
I've never been able to play this game, but I love it so much. Rei's awesome, and for as much of an ass as Kyoji is, I do like him. Kumiko's great too. Honestly, the Devil Summoner games are probably my favorite 'branch' of the MegaTen franchise. Thanks for playing this and sharing it and your thoughts about it.
Forgot to mention that Kinap's theme in Soul Hackers is called "Redman" on the OST which i think is pretty dope. And the Jack Bros in the game are called the Devil Buster Busters which is another reference to Megami Tensei II.
It's rad to see someone FINALLY covering this game, our man marsh doing god's work. It's also good you're finally getting some traction man, I hope you keep growing dude.
Here's a couple fun facts about zoma demons, since they're my personal favourite type in the entire series; The characters used to write zoma roughly translate to artificial demon Not only do they change form as you fuse more demons into one, but there are even specific demons that can only be gained through this, such as Longinus The kadmon half of dolly kadmon is taken from Adam kadmon, a term in kaballah for the ultimate form of man I like to build my zoma, at least in soul hackers, around buffs and curing status ailments, and my personal favourite form is the initial zeed form
I gotta say: these videos on the older/untranslated smt games are incredibly nice as a way to kinda see what they're all about. Thanks so much for making them
I really like the way the first person dungeons look in this one, they actually look like real places. Fits in well with that whole atmosphere thing you mentioned
Gonna have to wait until later to have a good meal with this nice hour-long treat. Edit: Had a pretty good pizza with this, that said thanks for going through the game Marsh, I've been sorta curious about the Devil Summoner protagonist since you could fight him in Soul Hackers. Glad to finally have an idea on who he was.
I'm really loving this channel. The sweet electro-synth OSTs in the background, the smooth down to earth commentary and the engaging visuals, it's really an extraordinary combination to me. Keep up the good work!
I was just talking about Devil Summoner in the past week and how cool it's aesthetic is, so getting a new video about it rules, I really hope it gets a full translation sooner rather than later
The opening where the game drags you though the dungeon while the AI curb stomps everything is such a cool way of showing how out of your league you are.
i played this one using the LPArchives playthrough as a guide and i really hated it but i enjoyed every second of it, ion really got a better way to describe the game.
That playthrough is a huge lifesaver for the longer dialogues. It started to get a little annoying to me near the end because of the bigger plot sections, but I guess I just have to look at that kind of thing as language practice. Pretty cool game when one of the biggest complaints against it is just that we can't read it yet.
I love all your videos but I keep coming back to this one, the jokes were just incredibly well-timed and deadpan. "All the cops take turns calling you a piece of shit" gets me every time

Awesome, I've been looking forward to a new video from you! I never even knew this game existed until recently. I always thought Soul Hackers was the first Devil Summoner game. I absolutely ****ing LOVE the graphics in this game and Soul Hackers. The early 3D with first person dungeon crawling looks so amazing for some reason. The 2D demons look great too.
I am extremely pleased you went so thoroughly through Devil Summoner 1, I've played through the game in Japanese with only a bare-bones guide before the transliteration of the script was even done. I really love some of the gameplay features in it, as well as the funky atmosphere and a lot of the unique designs. While it's rougher around the edges than even its sequel, I think it's a pretty unique game with excellent dungeons and music, despite some of the flaws.
In regards to Orgone Ghost, most Devil Summoner demons (many of which also appear in Devil Survivor games) are based on urban and classical myths, as opposed to the traditional divinities you encounter in the mainline series. (Orgone energy was also believed to be created by intercourse and observing intercourse, which is fitting in-context).
Ive been subscribed for a while and all i have to say is that thank you for getting more and more people into this franchise, my friend recently watched your videos and is now playing soul hackers on his modded 3ds and is absolutely hooked, so thanks marshall, Mucho amor from the Mexican SMT community! ✌️
Recently found your channel and I have to say you’re one of my favorite channels that talk about Megaten. It’s really cool to see someone talk about these older games! Devil Summoner definitely looks interesting, I do hope that one day Atlus will translate there older games but considering how they didn’t even bother updating the SMT1 app, literally the only official way to play the game, to work on modern phones says a lot. Well once again really enjoy your videos and keep up the good work!
I recently found out about your channel, for years Ive been wanting smt content that wasnt overly pretentious and relatable, thank you for your work! It makes me so happy to hear people talk about a game series close to my heart.

This game is a rare jewel. I really liked the loyalty system just because I enjoy keeping some demons until the end. If this system is somewhat introduced again with the implementation of the mitamas and a special reward for having max loyalty, not necessary for the game but a prize for the player, like a special evolution or skill it would be amazing. Great video I enjoy seeing these games again, so nostalgic
Damn good video man. Been working through the SMT series (just finished Devil Survivor Overclocked) and it’s been really cool to see what the games that never made it west are like. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for making this video! I’ve been a huge “SMT” fan since I picked up a copy of “Nocturne” back in college in 2004. And this is one of the only “SMT” games I haven’t had a chance to check out because of the language barrier. But I’ve always wanted to because it looked really interesting and closer in gameplay to modern “SMT” games, like its sequel: “Soul Hackers”.
"As soon as I got a fucking paper cut, they'd off themselves" I can't completely convey the hilarity that occurred in my head as soon as I heard that line, but thank you for this mental image: "Ow! Fuckin', cut my finger..." *-1HP* "Hey wait Kresnik what are you doing with that swor--" "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--" *-375HP* "....." *+1HP* "Bit overdramatic..."
Great video! Interesting to see the PSP version. It definitely seems like the definitive version. So let me give you a little taste of what I had to go through playing the Saturn version... The game is MUCH slower, both walking speed and battle speed There are TEN ranks of demon loyalty. It goes up painfully slow in this version too. The Back-upper, an item that saves your game anywhere, is a one-time use item that must be rebought after use. But the biggest, most annoying glaring problem is... You can't see warps on your map. You have to memorize it yourself, making dungeon like Chinatown and the old tomb a huuuuge pain!
As someone who keeps hoping for more people to talk about the Devil Summoner series, this was one heck of a treat, man!! I'm really hoping you make another video on Soul Hackers or even the Devil Summoner TV series that came out in the 90s. This is the great content I subbed for, so keep it up~!!

Awesome that you're giving these games a try. Reading off of a script can sound discouraging, but it's not so bad, and if you get hooked by the atmosphere you'll have a really good time.
Bloody fantaaaaaastic video man, thank you! So thorough and informative. Now I can play Soul Hackers happily :) From what I've heard, Soul Hackers seems to repeat a few themes, game ideas & locations originally seen here... almost like this game is the Mother 1 to Earthbound - a premium prototype of sorts. Although, as you've shown, absolutely it's own incredible work too. Just interesting. Thanks again, will be watching your other videos too.
I appreciate it - I intended this to be like forty minutes, but 22 pages later and it ended up being an hour. Great game though, so it wasn't painful to write.

Saw your review and decided to give the game a run. I have some good language experience so I was able to run through it while using the guide when needed. Comparing it to your runthrough of the game, there were a few interesting things I found from my run.
1. Demon Negotiations:
They have some pretty funny conversations.
2. Hard Mode:
I played the game on hard mode, and it changes the gave from what sounds like is a cake walk in normal.
3. Loyalty tidbits
Since Loyalty is rather required in Hard, I found that having gift demons was clearly the way to go, as law loyalty takes a long time, and by the time they become very loyal, they are underleveled for your crew.
4. Dungeons:
I mostly agree with what you said with the Dungeons, but a few additional points.
5: Conclusion:
Honestly, I had a great time.
I saw the name in Persona 2 aswell.
yea, its strange but Persona is technically in the Devil Summoner timeline because of P2
@@scrappy2082 that would mean that persona is really just devil summoner still...Like how JoJo went from Hamon to Stands!
@@XelchanTheBrave That about sums it up. It's too bad we never had Persona users team up with Devil Summoners.
@@ShadowBaofu Spoiler
One of the NPCs in P2 duology is possessed by Kyouji Kuzunoha.
"For you? That was some crazy shit, but for Kyouji it was just a monday."
3:19 but how unrealistic is this game thinking that in some universe a character I created can have a girlfriend?
Well, a plus is you atleast don't have to grind Social Links to get her. She's just there at the start
Yeah you tell them! I can have all mighty demons, reincarnation, world destruction by magic. But the most mythical beast of all, a girlfriend? Thats when i draw the line. Come on capcom! Get your game on!
I like how this channel started off moreso as SMT memes and now does old SMT reviews and Marsh is raking in viewers. Hidden talents, huh
Jesus is actually in Persona 3, as Messiah. He has a cross and crown of thorns. The fact that he's thanatos below the waist is part of the game's theme of redemption being death
"I have one demon but it's just that pig I got like 6 hours ago."
Too funny
Even knowing Japanese, the demon negotiation in this game was frustrating and overly difficult.
Is it THAT bad? Like in Soul Hackers it wasn't that bad. Did they toned down how bad it was?
@ZX-Gear Oh yes, they did. Soul Hackers in general is so much easier than the first Devil Summoner game.
@@jorgebermudez7861 So even knowing Japanese wouldn't do much to help.
@jorgebermudez7861 There is a lot of older Megaten Games that need English Translations. SMT II for PS1 being fucked over by spaghetti code.
5:48 coming back to reminisce on the pure genius of this line
Legit same, I watch these videos over and over all the time, helps me get through the worst homework has to offer
If smt has thought me anything, the more expensive it is, the more likely that it is new equipment lol
Yeah that's another solid way to tell if you're buying the right thing lmao
Dude. I'm not even kidding. This is some of the best content on UA-cam. Breaking into games which are primarily in Japan and delving deep into them is fascinating. Whatever new Experiences you create, I'll be here, because by YHWH, this stuff is good.
I appreciate it. I feel the same way, this stuff is just neat and it'd be cool to get more people into it.
Redman was renamed to Kinap in the english version. Probably because Redman was to culturally insensitive for a chara with native-american motive
1:32 Charon from SMT 4? I'm sold.
It seems SMT 4 called back to more than the original MT, interesting
@@BrenTenkage He used to let you Continue on death in MT2, so that probably has a bit to do with it. Using his design from this game is cool though.
Too bad the PSP didn't have a play coin system to have Charon bring you back instead of throwing you down to the depths of Hell.
It's rad to see someone FINALLY covering this game, our man marsh doing god's work. It's also good you're finally getting some traction man, I hope you keep growing dude.
Here's a couple fun facts about zoma demons, since they're my personal favourite type in the entire series;
The characters used to write zoma roughly translate to artificial demon
Not only do they change form as you fuse more demons into one, but there are even specific demons that can only be gained through this, such as Longinus
The kadmon half of dolly kadmon is taken from Adam kadmon, a term in kaballah for the ultimate form of man
I like to build my zoma, at least in soul hackers, around buffs and curing status ailments, and my personal favourite form is the initial zeed form
I gotta say: these videos on the older/untranslated smt games are incredibly nice as a way to kinda see what they're all about. Thanks so much for making them
I really like the way the first person dungeons look in this one, they actually look like real places. Fits in well with that whole atmosphere thing you mentioned
i found your channel literally two days ago and ive been watching your vids nonstop, thank you for this :)
This is the Megaten content we NEED
It seriously cracks me up that the Domain of Sloth is a running joke.
Hope the Saturn version gets translated one day. The Saturn is Sega's most underrated console with a surprisingly good RPG lineup. It deserves better.
half a million on a devil summoner video in current era is insane to me
The opening where the game drags you though the dungeon while the AI curb stomps everything is such a cool way of showing how out of your league you are.
" rebellious demons who have manic depression"
"group of rebellious demons with manic depressions" fuckin perfect
i played this one using the LPArchives playthrough as a guide and i really hated it but i enjoyed every second of it, ion really got a better way to describe the game.
That playthrough is a huge lifesaver for the longer dialogues. It started to get a little annoying to me near the end because of the bigger plot sections, but I guess I just have to look at that kind of thing as language practice. Pretty cool game when one of the biggest complaints against it is just that we can't read it yet.
Yo its dat boi Simply dad whatup
I love all your videos but I keep coming back to this one, the jokes were just incredibly well-timed and deadpan.
"All the cops take turns calling you a piece of shit" gets me every time
really enjoy ur reviewsml mate, they are informative as hell, they are not of the same trope as the typical "SMT IS GOD PERSONA IS TRASH" videos that ive watched recently ha. good job, keep it up :)
I really like how the characters are written in this game. The ending was very bittersweet. I couldn't imagine being in MC's shoes.
I said it before and i wont stop saying it. These are really interesting vids. I love SMT but suffering through the games is such a bother sometimes, and thats where youre different from most channels. You provide such a good platform for anyone interested in SMT. You deserve so many more subs.
TL;DR, Rei Reiho is a BABE. But so is Nemissa from Soul Hackers, of course.
Always felt the same about this era and Ps2 era graphics, nice to see someone share this opinion.
This game looks so badass, really sucks that there’s no translation patch. Atlus could make easy money if they rereleased this game today
Saturn - is reason why this game is not translated
"You can't tell your demons what moves to use"
*Persona 3:FES Marin Karin flashbacks intensify*
Gotta love how you named your protagonist "Marsh Mellow"
Ive been subscribed for a while and all i have to say is that thank you for getting more and more people into this franchise, my friend recently watched your videos and is now playing soul hackers on his modded 3ds and is absolutely hooked, so thanks marshall, Mucho amor from the Mexican SMT community! ✌️
Hilariously, Kyouji kept his word. He sent you to the eigth circle of hell for the for the many scratches you put on his body
Aaaand subbed
Saw your DDS and smt if videos and i hope your channel keeps on growing because your megaten videos are super good
Great timing, I've been working on this one for a while - glad to have you!
Demifiend has his pixie. Nakajima has Cerberus.
Raidou has Gouto.
Nahobino has Aogami.
Nanashi has Dogda.
And Devil Summoner has some fucking pig.

@@rashrules05 I replayed the game this week.
ah, a cultured commenter definitely
Fellow Live-A-Live players are always nice to see!
yooooooooooo didnt expect a Live a Live reference here
The most important part of this video is that we learned Marsh's last name is Mellow
I recently found out about your channel, for years Ive been wanting smt content that wasnt overly pretentious and relatable, thank you for your work! It makes me so happy to hear people talk about a game series close to my heart.
The final boss music legitimately sounds like something you'd hear in a detective show imho
"rebelious demons with maniac depression" thats poetic.
being put into the body of an elite demon slayer, fighting 5G towers, shungite, and jesus christ. now THIS is how a Your Name sequel should be.
fo real, thank you for doing this LP! love them straightforward walkthrough type Lets Plays.
I wish they made more non post-apocalyptic smt games. I like the idea of a normal city with weird events caused by demons
Hey marsh that guy on a cross you were talking about is called agony and his name is based off of the action of Christ praying for his arrest.
Hey, thanks for the old megaten videos! I enjoy the pseudo-walktrough format since i don't know japanese and my current goal is to play the english/spanish translated games. You help me understand more about the lore while feeling as if i was hanging out with a friend. Keep it up!
I've watched a few of your videos so far and now I'm absolutely hooked on your vids! Thank you dude.
These reviews are brilliant, and incredibly funny. They're just what I need for grinding entertainment. Also the NINE video had me in tears.
My dad is pretty into the whole Orgone Energy thing. He has a couple of “Orgone Towers” set up outside his house to repel bad energy.
thank god someone is making comprehensive videos on these more unpopular SMT games, keep it up man!
This game is a rare jewel. I really liked the loyalty system just because I enjoy keeping some demons until the end.
If this system is somewhat introduced again with the implementation of the mitamas and a special reward for having
max loyalty, not necessary for the game but a prize for the player, like a special evolution or skill it would be amazing.
Great video I enjoy seeing these games again, so nostalgic
Keep doing what you do man. Each video is better than the last. I’m looking forward to what you do next!
"As soon as I got a fucking paper cut, they'd off themselves" I can't completely convey the hilarity that occurred in my head as soon as I heard that line, but thank you for this mental image:
"Ow! Fuckin', cut my finger..." *-1HP* "Hey wait Kresnik what are you doing with that swor--"
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--" *-375HP*
"....." *+1HP* "Bit overdramatic..."
Great video! Interesting to see the PSP version. It definitely seems like the definitive version. So let me give you a little taste of what I had to go through playing the Saturn version...
The game is MUCH slower, both walking speed and battle speed
There are TEN ranks of demon loyalty.
Honestly dude. Just watching your videos alone make me wanna try out the older megaten games besides soul hackers. You're the whole reason why i'm playing SMT if. And now this video alone just makes me wanna play this game despite the language barrier.
Awesome that you're giving these games a try. Reading off of a script can sound discouraging, but it's not so bad, and if you get hooked by the atmosphere you'll have a really good time.
You and Civvie put out the best videos they're always so chill
You're going to blow up. Great review style, knowledgeable about the series, and I can feel the passion behind each of these vids. Please keep it up👌
I really like your coverage of the Megaten games. I hope you continue to do more of this.
The orgone energy boss bit was fucken hilarious shit reminds me about a demon called "chemtrails" in SMTIV
Bloody fantaaaaaastic video man, thank you! So thorough and informative. Now I can play Soul Hackers happily :)
From what I've heard, Soul Hackers seems to repeat a few themes, game ideas & locations originally seen here... almost like this game is the Mother 1 to Earthbound - a premium prototype of sorts. Although, as you've shown, absolutely it's own incredible work too. Just interesting.
Thanks again, will be watching your other videos too.
I just started Soul Hackers not too long ago, and I can see why these games are pretty stylish and cool looking.
I love your humor and your style, keep it up my dude
Damn. An hour? Congrats on all the new subs, btw.
I appreciate it - I intended this to be like forty minutes, but 22 pages later and it ended up being an hour. Great game though, so it wasn't painful to write.
Marsh just finished the video now- when I saw an hour I expected this to have been a painful experience, glad to hear it wasn’t. Hopefully vids like this convince someone out there this is worth translating!
This channel became in just mere hours of listening while farming in warframe, my favorite megaten channel by far
Legit found this channel like 3 days ago from the smt if video. Good shit man 👍
Im so glad I found you when I did, you nail my sense of humor and these videos are really entertaining, thank you
Clicked on the smt if video on my reccomended. Been binging your videos and I gotta say I dig this 100% keep it up 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Man dealing with Kyoji made me think of two things.
1 - I wanna drop kick this douche bag
2 - Domon Kassu from G Gundam series screaming Kyoji
