How are you all finding the DIY reels? Is the 250w motor ok? Are you using a speed controller? I'm about to have a go at converting my reels to save my shoulders a bit of strain.
Absolutely fantastic. Been using it for nearly a year and a half and had no problems with the 250w motor. If you wind it in to fast it throws the chain occasionally so I can control the speed just by how tight I hold the hose. When the hose is fully out and round a few corners it can stop it but if it’s out that far I tend to pull it closer to the van so I know I’m not catching anything. I am so pleased I did it and can’t imagine going back to rolling it in by hand👍

I have also changed the hoist switch as I don't the the one I had could handle the power draw on the old one. Hope this helps. Dave
Thank you so much for the speedy response!
@@squeakycleandave1 Hi Dave, because the ebay seller has changed to 3 bolt holes, i believe the diameter on the center hole of the sprocket is smaller so you won't be able to fit the black central manifold through the hole. i am going to order one with a bigger centre diameter. i'll let you know if it's definately the problem.
I did weld up a frame to mount the motor with an adjuster for chain tension.
Mark Sutton I like the idea of adding a chain tensioner but never got round to it 👍
Hi Dave just about to make my own electric reel, quick question... What size sprocket did you get, the eBay link isn't coming up. Cheers
Tim Hancock. Hi Tim Sorry it taken so long to get back to you. I had to go out and count the teeth on the sprocket. The one I’m using has 80 teeth on it for a 6mm chain. Look on EBay an electric scooter sprocket. Hope this helps
@@squeakycleandave1 Hi Dave, cheers really appreciate that info. Must get on with the job now.
Tim Hancock get a better hoist switch the the one in the link. I keep meaning to change it. This is what I’m using now

@@squeakycleandave1 Cheers matey
@@squeakycleandave1 All the parts ordered, I've gone for a new reel (Pure freedom professional) Everything coming in just under half the price of a ready made electric reel. Will let you know how it goes.
I used a three bolt holed sprocket on my reel no problems
Mark Sutton I had a look a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t find any with the four bolt holes on eBay
Hi Dave, you have convinced me to go for this solution over using a drill!! Can I ask if there are any upgrades/mods that you can think of since doing the original. I looked at buying the hoist switch that you bought but the seller actually states that it is of low quality and wont last long!! How did yours work out?
Crystal Clean Window Cleaning there are possibly 2 things I would change. The hoist switch is one and the other is I would probably use a new reel. The one I used is a bit to worn and slightly bent so it would run better with a new one
Hi Dave. Really like this mate - I've also watched your 7 improvements video. Thank you for your sharing and making life a bit easier for your fellow shiner! Quick question - can I find links to the various bits and bobs needed to build?
bigwig7 hi mate. Sorry I have had to remove the links as most didn’t work and I was struggling to find the replacements. Most of the parts are available from EBay but the main struggle was getting the big sprocket that fitted on the hose reel
@@squeakycleandave1 Thanks Dave I'll see what I can find mate
Great work - it makes you wonder how companies are charging £500+ for them . Bit pricey if you ask me but still a great time saver no doubt .
Henry Logman I can see the advantage in having a better quality hose reel but I agree it’s still pricey
Great video, thanks. I was wondering is it much harder to pull your hose out before work?
Gabor Csapo it not that much harder. You have to think a bit more about how you position your van but it outweighs how much easier it is then winding your hose in every time
Another well documented vid. Will you take the whole reel outside to do jobs to direct the host to the right position, is this portable?
Polzn Bladz at the moment I can take it out of the van so I have more room in the van for carrying things but when working the reel stays in the van. This saves a lot of energy lifting the reel in and out.
@@squeakycleandave1 This is still one of my favourite vids I've seen. How did you know where and what accessories you needed. Did the sprocket come with the chain? The chain fits the sprocket perfectly
@@polznbladz3242 I bought the chain and sprocket to fit together. There used to be a list of bits available on one of the forums that I took it all from but most of the bits have changed now
@@squeakycleandave1 Ahh ok, so people have made this also. It's still a great vid
awesome love the bubble sounds lol
Nice one. Thanks.
great video Thanks!
dawidddddddddd thanks for watching 👍
I built mine 18 months ago using the same method. The only thing I would like to add is I use a tensioner on the chain.
Brian S that is something I have considered and agree 👍
i mounted to a board like you, within weeks the board was falling apart and holding water
On the mark 2 I used a plastic board
@@squeakycleandave1 please show us the update 😁 il have to hunt round bnq for a piece of hard plastic I can screw to.

Great vid matey! I've tried to do it myself but I find the chain often comes off the sprocket 🙄 any help welcomed 👊🏽
Gilles Horton 3 things I can think to check
1) is the motor lined up tight enough
2) is the chain tight enough. May need a chain tensioner but not sure how well they work.
3) have you oiled the chain. This made a massive difference to mine. I keep a tin of bicycle chain oil in the van
Hope this helps. Let me know how you get on 👍
Does it need to be super tight? I'm worried I might of got the sprocket a few mm out 🙄 will definitely try the oil tho, thanks bud, your videos have been ever so helpful
Gilles Horton no it doesn’t need to be super tight. If you can move the motor closer and shorten the chain that might help as well.
Thanks for watching the vids. Glad they have helped👍
I switched it up to the 24v and it goes mental quick! But now this chain is having issues 🙄Going to try re-allign the the motor and putting some oil on it, and hope for the best. Thanks for the info matey 👊🏽
Hi can anyone show me pics of how they fitted a chain tensioner 👍
Thanks Dave.
I’ve ordered the bits and a tensioner to try and avoid the chain jumping off.
I’ll let you know how it turns out
We’ve got hd power up from cleaning warehous £450 plus vat little pricey..... but I would never go back to manually hose reels
Its amazing how much difference it makes
Cool
Paul Wolstenholme thanks for watching 👍
I have to of these reels. If anyone knows of someone who could do it for me and i will pay them for it and buy parts. Am no good at this stuff i would mess it up. Cheers you tubers
