I have just recently become a Glock owner after many years of not having interest in them. The Glock 43X put the hook in me. And now the 19X has found a spot in my gun safe. Along the trail of Glock research I stumbled upon Lenny and the Glock store. I just want to say that I enjoy his videos very much since he has such a nice pleasant way of explaining things. 👍

If you're running a smaller carry pistol like a compact or subcompact that has a short barrel, you really need to run +P ammo if you're using hollow points. There's been a lot of debate around whether calling them added pressure is actually warranted, since manufacturers rarely share how much extra pressure your rounds will actually be expending when fired, but it's been pretty consistently shown that on average +P expanding munitions perform significantly better in shorter barrels than standard non +P rounds do. You really need the added pressure in order for the bullets to expand correctly upon impact when fired from a short barrel; without it, you run the risk that the bullet's mass-to-velo ratio won't be adequate enough to result in proper expansion.
Hornady Critical Duty +P 135g is what I use in my EDC (G43X), just as it's the choice of the FBI and countless police departments across the nation. Ballistically, it's one of the best rounds on the market. The red filling material used isn't actually there to assist expansion necessarily, as was said in the video. It's actually there to prevent early expansion, which is one of the biggest issues with hollow points when someone is wearing heavy clothes. This is especially bad in the winter of course, when people are wearing thick layers. Hollow point rounds without fillers expand too early and lose a ton of their energy as a result, whereas with the filler (what Hornady calls Flexitip, though other brands surely have their own proprietary materials) the bullet is able to rip through any initial layers without losing as significant of a percentage of it's energy before expanding.

I agree that some guns, sizes can affect ballistics but in general you are looking at a ccw/defense range of 3ft to 21ft. Also the pistol or revolver round will need to punch thru around 16-22". In 2024 many people are larger, thicker than the 1960s 1970s 1980s.

Lenny, I'm a fairly recent watcher of your videos since I purchased my first Glock a couple years ago, and I must say I have learned an awful lot. I did watch this latest video and I'm "somewhat" impressed with the Pilgrim ammo, but I believed your bullet hit the table first before it went into the gel. Notice the upward curve as if ricocheting off the table. It would be helpful if you did another test/video with to truly demonstrate its impact.

I hate to be critical, but E=MV^2. E=MC^2 is Einstein's theory relating to nuclear energy where C^2 is the speed of light squared. For calculating the energy of a bullet, V^2 is the velocity, usually in feet per second.

I like the extra penetration from 125+ grain bullets. Lots of carjackings that might require penetrating barriers.
So I run +p 125 grain (GD or Federal HST). I run a Glock Gen5 G26. I run it in a Vedder kydex IWB, run on a Nexbelt. After all that running, I may have a heart attack.

When considering self defense and not ballistic gel or water jugs, one must factor clothing penetration before it hits tissue. I do not think the “Pilgrim " would perform good, especially if a perpetrator is wearing fairly heavy clothing. Federal has "Punch" and "HST". HST is designed to penetrate clothing before expanding in tissue. Any thoughts?

The pilgrim would still penetrate enough and even if it just hits below the skin the energy dissipation will impart enough of a shock to let the receiver know that s/he's been hit by a sledge hammer. That's my totally unscientific guess.

    • @bobmotherfuckinsmith3089
      @bobmotherfuckinsmith3089 6 місяців тому

Clothing makes negligible difference. If we shot one time that'd be something to consider but when a defensive incident occurs the average shot rounds of 5.5, so 3 on the low end to 8 on the higher side spread across 60 percent of 100 percent for those accounted. If people carry .22 and 380 for defensive ammo then I'm sure any hollow point 9mm will do just fine. Remember Velocity is squared. External deviated hollow points like the APX interceptor rounds at 65grn are going 1600 fps and blow water melon apart.

Another consideration for me is the bullets potential to cause collateral damage. How likely is it to pass through a wall or how likely is it to pass through a persons body and then critically injure somebody else. If I was protecting myself, but in doing so I killed an innocent person, that would be hard for me to live with. so if you were carrying in a crowded area or you live in a neighborhood with close neighbors in an apartment, that would also impact my choice

Correct- this is why the NIJ, FBI developed protocol tests. Feeding, cycle, wt retaining, depth. 16-18" after a common barrier: auto glass, plywood, fabric, etc. In 2024, many major brands do fairly well. Some pistol rounds are nickel plated, better made.

Yeah, when mass is converted into pure energy (like the mass is gone, and in its place energy, like in an atomic reaction) the amount of energy released as a result of the destruction of mass is mc^2. KE is the key in ballistics.

Hey length talk about the angle of the bullet on hollow points because it's well known that glock has had recalls for feeding issues.

I was thinking about that with my 1911, it doesn’t like hollow points because of the feed ramp. But I found some new ammo that is still the shape of FMJ penetrates like FMJ but then it spins over end doing more damage than any hollow point I’ve seen… that’s my go to for the my Kimber custom shop ultra cdp , they make it 9 mm so you shouldn’t have any problem with feeding… it’s called TUI, tumble upon impact…. So if you’re having feeding issues, I’d give it a try..

I'm surprised to hear Lenny come to that conclusion. That pilgrim ammo is dumping most of its energy in an incredibly short distance, a distance in which other studies would say is much too short to be reliably incapacitate. There's a reason why LE agencies do not use any of the many gimmicky hyper-velocity ammo types, they don't prove to be as effective. This is such a surface-level understanding of pistol ammo and terminal ballistics, it's actually very surprising to see it demonstrated here on this channel. Lenny, I'd refer you to one of several podcasts that Hornady has done on this subject, it would expand your knowledge greatly to hear from guys who do legitimate scientific testing.

Why are you surprised? He SELLS that ammo, at a substantial profit. Its a small local company so its not like you can get it anywhere else (should you even want to). First and foremost, he's in business and making videos to sell his products and services. He couldn't care less what's best for you. He cares about what's best FOR HIM.

@@lenzielenski3276 You actually can get it elsewhere. It is very clearly Liberty Civil Defense ammo in different packaging. The appearance and performance are identical.

I would like to see a match between the Fort Smith 9MM SUB-MUNITION® TUI® - 125GR AMMO and the Speer Gold Dot Carry Gun 9mm Luger 135 Grain ammo. That would be a great test. I have both for my Glock 43X EDC as well as the Hornady Critical Duty and Critical Defense.

124 HST +P for me, since Winchester 125 gr Ranger T bonded +P isn't easily available. The Federal 9BPLE +P+is a little much for a subcompact but would likely be ok in a medium to full size weapon.

Fiocchi XTP 124 grain uses Hornady bullets at a significant cost reduction. Used in my M&P Shield Plus with a 15 round magazine. Oh, and did anybody else notice that the firearm used with the Pilgrim 50 gr was different than all the other brands fired?

Lenny, Einstein’s theory of relativity isn’t quite the right formula. I’m positive the one you meant to say was Kinetic Energy = 1/2 x Mass x Velocity squared. Or, 1/2mv^2.

I understand that the reason that some of the manufacturers place a synthetic cap on their hollow point bullets is to prevent premature expansion, I could be wrong. I would have liked to see the effect of the fluted bullets where the bullet is not jacked and made of a solid piece of metal, usually an alloy of copper or brass.

In a locale where there is minimal clothing, ie resistance, the 50 grain might be very acceptable. However in areas where a med-heavy jacket/coat is necessary, the penetration will be insufficient to yield an attackers' incapacitation.

Underwood 68 grain Extreme Defense. Penetrates the same through gel no matter the barriers used in the FBI tests. Denim, wallboard, sheet metal and windshield glass. Tim at the Military Arms Channel tested it and switched to it years ago. That Pilgrim ammo needs to be more thoroughly tested. I bet it wouldn't do so well against some of the barriers. And even in bare gel it looks like it only penetrated 8-10 inches. The FBI requirement is 12-18.

Aside from lack of momentum and penetration, the weight savings for the Pilgrim round is insignificant. Assuming carrying it in a G19 with 16 + 1 rounds, it saves 2.7 ounces over a 124 grain bullet. Not the best of reasons for choosing a self defense round. Make that up by carrying less change or something.
