Mike Collings it’s great being there as it happened isn’t it. Lifelong fan. Saw him live last night and this song in particular, was almost a spiritual experience.
Me too! I was at secondary school when Cars was released and the synth sounds, and Gary's voice, instantly latched onto something in my brain. Since then I've loved everything unusual and differently interesting in the music world, and I have pretty much everything Gary released. Seems a nice bloke too! :)
So, I prayed But you weren't listening. Making miracles? So, I begged But you were far away. Saving souls perhaps? So, I screamed But she was very small And you have worlds to mend So, she died And you were glorious But you were somewhere else If you are my shepherd Then I'm lost and no-one can find me If you are my saviour Then I'm dead and no-one can help me If you are my glory Then I'm sick and no-one can cure me If you light my darkness Then I'm blind and no-one can see me If you are my father Then love lies abandoned and bleeding If you are my comfort Then nightmares are real and deceiving If you are my answer Then I must have asked the wrong question I'd spit on your heaven If I could find one to believe in
My dear mum lost what would have been my older brother 1 hour after giving birth. I cannot imagine the awful pain of loss she felt & my dad was not the caring type & not even there at the time. I suffered an excruciating miscarriage with the fetous being stuck in my uterous, again with an uncaring partner. Both my dear mum now passed & I never thought of blaming God. We both went on to have healthy children just like Gary & Gemma. I feel sad that Gary is blaming God in this song...I think of the words being more appropriate to my dad with the way he treated me & my younger brother & abandoned us for another wife & her children. I still Thank God for my blessings living humbly on my min wage.
I've been with Gary since 1979. I've been through all the changes, the airplane crash, the evolution. This man simply gets it. But you know what else? Fans don't think about this, but HE GETS US. I know why he wrote this, and his pain is mine and ours. But more importantly, our pain is HIS.
The tune isn't aggressive or loud, there's no screaming or distorted guitars. What we have instead is a man with bitter hate, hopelessness. He placed his faith in god, and god failed him. This is one hell of an angry, regretful dark tune.
So, I prayed But you weren't listening. Making miracles? So, I begged But you were far away. Saving souls perhaps? So, I screamed But she was very small And you have worlds to mend. So, she died And you were glorious. But you were somewhere else. If you are my shepherd Then I'm lost and no one can find me. If you are my saviour Then I'm dead and no one can help me. If you are my glory Then I'm sick and no one can cure me. If you light my darkness Then I'm blind and no one can see me. If you are my father Then love lies abandoned and bleeding. If you are my comfort Then nightmares are real and deceiving. If you are my answer Then I must have asked the wrong question. I'd spit on your heaven If I could find one to believe in.
This might genuinely be the greatest video on youtube. I've never been more empowered, more moved, more affected by a performance ever. This performance is incredible. A legend at work. Truly staggering. Truly. Staggering.
Heard "Cars" in High School in the 1980's but unfortunately never learned more about G.N. until a couple years ago. (I am an American where he didn't have the success he had elsewhere in the world). Now I've been having the best time hearing 35 years of his music for the first time! Amazing, underrated talent. Also, he's so humble about it which is endearing. A wealth of moving music....
Just saw him with ministry here in Vegas, I went for the ministry show, but soon realized I was there for the Gary Newman performance, amazing, amazing show he put on, and such an amazing artist
Just amazing. Gary Numan is a dark and mysterious genius. Love his work along with dark music from other acts like Nine Inch Nails, Chelsea Wolfe, Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead, AllFlaws
Gary Numans most emotional track performed brilliantly. Fet me every time as Ive felt the same loss. Pain delivered Perfectly, so truthful and real. I would say dGod bless if there is one. Love to all ❤
Such an iconoclasm, such greatness, such an improbable cosmic landscape full of darkness, light, fear and wonder and above all mystery, with rehearsals that plunge you into a trance followed by sudden changes that wake you up, your eyes googly and quivering eyebrows.
My absolute fav. 70'-80's. I connect even more 2020's. Mr. Numan is an absolute word treasure, his daughter can sing! I think Gary Numan is my God now. Touches me in my soul😍😍😍🥰❣️❣️❣️🤩🥰🙏🕊️💐😎🌞
Awesome track. I still feel like a teenager listening to him and I'm 55. I was at his farewell concert in Wembley. Have also seen him twice more. I love the epic ones
I remember hearing Cars for the first time back in 79, been a fan ever since. So glad he found his feet again, a true artist and groundbreaking musician.
Oh... my... GOD. As Sanveana says, orgasmic. This track reaches the very inner core of me, and this performance is magnificent. Thanks, Gary, players and KEXP. I can't get enough.
That's a killer track. Cars was the very first record I bought in '79, I was 12 and still listen to Numan weekly when I'm not in my studio full of synths lol.
More than any other R&R performers, GARY NUMAN & ALICE COOPER, each understand the importance/relevance of theatrix in live performances of their craft...ROCK-ON till D E A T H !!
I'd add David Bowie to that group, and possibly Marilyn Manson. I will say Gary Numan has been pretty consistent about giving each new album a definite image and feel that is unique and carrying that over to the live shows and so forth. It's only maybe Bowie that really kept that up - but then in the end even he just became "David Bowie" and gave up on the unique characters.
I would say that the very same vastness of the universe that you mentioned, coupled with natural entropy and humanity's ease for destroying anything beautiful proves Mr. Numan is probably on the right track. Oh, and probably his best lyrics ever.
This version, and by far the best, of Prayer for the Unborn is hidden away on Exposure, second disc, last track. Have not heard it recorded anywhere else. A gem
If this song doesn't make you 😢 cry then you don't have a heart.
we are all different thank god....boring life if this song made us all cry...great for the people who connect with this stuff...me..noooooo
Always fills me with pride when I tell someone I've been a fan since 79

Same here 79 ever since hearing replica
Me as well... which also includes a lifelong fascination with the Cure as well.

Powerful lyrics
That last line sounds like a reference to Bertrand Russell. Thanks for posting.
Been a Numan fan since 1979, but this track is Numan at his very best.
Same. Tubeway Army, 1979.
I agree stunning track one of his best
I could not agree more. This track is just otherworldly and is Numan on steroids.
Pioniere della musica elettronica.Fin dai tempi dei primi Tubeway Army.Dal 76/77,con Jess Lidyard alla batteria e Paul Gardiner al basso.Bombers......
Can't argue there mate
So hauntingly beautiful and gary is so gorgeous bless him this song is about poor Gemma and gary losing their first baby
I thought this too when I read the lyrics but you have confirmed this, thanks

The combination of synth and guitar power chords is just heavenly gary at his best

Makes the hair on my neck stand up every time I listen. Incredible song.
nice!!
Me too
It’s incredible. Top five (5) for me (and I have them all).
The tune isn't aggressive or loud, there's no screaming or distorted guitars.
What we have instead is a man with bitter hate, hopelessness. He placed his faith in god, and god failed him.
This is one hell of an angry, regretful dark tune.
So beautiful though. What a raw, horrible place to be, but so relatable.
I have recently discovered Gary Numan. The only song I knew of his was Cars from when I was a kid. He has such a rich catalog of music.
The Pleasure Principle is such a great album in its entirety. Cars is great too. But I love every track on TPP.
So, I prayed
But you weren't listening.
Making miracles?
So, I begged
But you were far away.
Saving souls perhaps?
So, I screamed
But she was very small
And you have worlds to mend.
So, she died
And you were glorious.
But you were somewhere else.

If you are my father
Then love lies abandoned and bleeding.
If you are my comfort

If you are my answer
Then I must have asked the wrong question.
I'd spit on your heaven
If I could find one to believe in.
very adverse very dangerous words to sing to the LORD JESUS
@@tonycostanzo4276 singing it to all the Gods, of which there are countless, and every one of them abandoned him.

The anger and spite towards "God" in this song is staggering. Epic, epic songwriting.
i feel so stupid thanks
"If you are my answer, then I must have asked the wrong question."
Gary's body of work is unreal, but this is just next level. Beautiful, ethereal, heartbreaking, powerful❤
This might genuinely be the greatest video on youtube. I've never been more empowered, more moved, more affected by a performance ever. This performance is incredible. A legend at work. Truly staggering. Truly. Staggering.
quite agree up on the podium with Peter Gabriel and genesis ie Phil collins

This must be the pinnacle of his work; always been a fan and still proud to be one. This guy is amazing, simply amazing
Wow.... are you kidding me? OFF THE CHARTS AMAZING!!
Gary is the most beautiful man in the entire world
Just saw him with ministry here in Vegas, I went for the ministry show, but soon realized I was there for the Gary Newman performance, amazing, amazing show he put on, and such an amazing artist
This is my favourite Gary Numan song ever!
Gary's degree of coolness goes off the scale - how can anyone be that cool ?
Ge is so cool, he can freeze New York
This Numan song is unbearably beautiful... He's such a musical entity with real innate drama & power... always in my day
A awesome and beautifull hymn to saddness and desperation ... so dark, so cold ... so desperate !
One of his best ever tracks for me; amazing live.
Numan's best track by far! ❤️👍🏼
As Bill Hicks said( or shouted); "PLAY FROM YOUR FUCKING HEART!"...I think Gary Numan does.
Since the Tubeway days, yes. What a fucking star.
Alex Jones? 😜
he gets better with each century he is with us. incredible performance
Just amazing.
Gary Numan is a dark and mysterious genius.

This is orgasmic! This is my first G.N. - experience ever (since his 80'- hits). Never expected him to be that intense.....Really beatifull
TheSanveana Stunning
The Absolut one and only "Gary Numan" one of the best Songs !!
The fact that Numan had Currie in his band says everything anyone would ever want to know about his integrity.
For this performance?
@@nicksambides2628 No...Billy Currie played on Pleasure Principle, did a bunch of his videos and toured in Numan's band for his world tour of 1979
@@barrysmith8920 Right. Thought so. Numan has always named his sources of inspiration and was very generous with them.
@@nicksambides2628 Yes...incredibly humble man. One of my all time favorites ever.
Numan is Remarkable... and surely among one of the best live performances Ive ever seen, out of hundreds.
Such an iconoclasm, such greatness, such an improbable cosmic landscape full of darkness, light, fear and wonder and above all mystery, with rehearsals that plunge you into a trance followed by sudden changes that wake you up, your eyes googly and quivering eyebrows.
Well said.
iconoclasm.. I like that

How good is it when the Synth kicks in - brilliant live 👌
Hopefully he’ll sing it live this tour!!! In the Uk x
OMG absolute OtherWORLDLY experience!!! Still get total goosebumps every time I hear this
Like a magnet I'm back to watch this again, I can't stop it
Awesome track. I still feel like a teenager listening to him and I'm 55. I was at his farewell concert in Wembley. Have also seen him twice more. I love the epic ones
What a tragically beautiful song.
Numan is a mega-musician, a genius understanding of great drama in song... right from 1979's 'Down In The Park'... This song looms large
I remember hearing Cars for the first time back in 79, been a fan ever since. So glad he found his feet again, a true artist and groundbreaking musician.
Soul Food , Gary Numan is a gentleman rock star Thank you!
So powerful. I want Gary Numan to perform this song on my funeral.
Me too 👍🏼
I already told my wife I want his track 'Exhibition' played at mine.
It's about his wife looking a baby. ?
my thoughts exactly not bothered about a big funeral long as this is played loud and clear respect!
Probably the best example of SYN music ever recorded on Planet Earth!
Wow, right 2:40 I’m speechless throughout the rest of the song. Fantastic
Just want to paint a picture that hits like that one day!
Heard this live recently, the way the music and sound traveled through my consciousness was incredible. Amazing piece to be experienced live.
Saw this guy in Glasgow a few months back. Highly recommend him!

just fkn epic in every way....long live Gary Numan
Absolutely beautiful I could cry 💖
I DO cry
He and Gemma lost their baby 💔
This such a beautiful song, but it must be hard for him to sing because it must take him back to the reason why he wrote it in the first place
nice
That's why 'Little Invitro' doesn't get played live.
Timeless.
He is a fucking genius !! 👼🏻
+Gwak2013 YES !!!
We always new it just took others thirty odd years to realise
To say he's a fucking genius doesn't scratch the surface !!!!! Not from this world
Just an amazing and powerful song
Blew me away listening to it live
Did not want it to end
I love all of Gary's stuff but this is still my favourite
Just came across this music, was in university when he came on the seen in the 80's, just amazing performance. Thanks.
