Harley Freeman in many ways it's that he's not popular. His music if popular would attract so many "edgy" kids and hipsters who actually don't understand his music at all. So more power to him :)
Yeah. The norm seems to be that people--even people in their forties an fifties--are just not into 'deep' music (anything that requires a great deal of thought or appreciation), and that's unfortunate; but it is their loss. Gary deserves a lot more credit than he's been given.
Oh this beautiful man saved my life at 13 and he's still doing it. As an unwanted, undiagnosed Aspie, isolated and in-the-way throughout childhood in the 70s, he connected me with the greatest literature and painters, to the fact I wasn't alone, and these guys like me were Cool. His lyrics and musical ingenuity washes over me like a glimpse into Emptiness Directly. So thank you lovely man. Gary Numan makes my soul fly.
Heard My Name Is Ruin... immediately broke down and bought the album. Heard this song... and just broke down. Decades of listening to this man and I love him more now than ever.

It's so amazing to see someone grow to be better than ever with such a seemingly endless career and growing through darkest times into such a beautiful place. especially performing with Persia and seeing him dance with such exaltation to her singing, that's such a life goal.
Lyrics I know your voice And the words you speak lie I know your face When you're trying to hide your fears I know your breath When a thought makes you cry again I know you well And I've seen your tears And it all began with you I was born then died you came to me And it all began with you On the day you made the world When you whisper my name I'll be with you When you reach out your hand I'll be with you When you walk to the light I'll be with you When you stand before god I'll be with you All that we are Is more than I dreamed All that we shared Is more than a life can hold All that we have Is more than we'll ever need All that we lost Is nothing but time And it all began with you And it ends for me the day you leave And it all began with you So today we stop the world When you whisper my name I'll be with you When you reach out your hand I'll be with you When you walk to the light I'll be with you When you stand before god I'll be with you

I never gave Gary Newman a thought over the decades as he wrote a song when I was a kid "cars" and always assumed he would be up his own arse. I stumbled across a random video of him on you tube and he was talking about his inspirations for music. I instantly loved him, the way he was generous and down to earth and clearly a lovely fella...you can't hide that. So I listened to a few of his songs and I am blown away. I have been brought to tears, amazed by the beauty both uplifting, dark but touching the soul. After years of looking for something genuine in a mire of crap that has become the music industry this discover for me is like coming out of the dessert into a fresh oasis and a new universe.
His new stuff is certainly amazingly well produced and mastered! It will just keep on rewarding you if you listen on better systems. YET, and this is the kicker, I've got a home studio setup that tends to reveal flaws in the whole mixing and mastering process, and his music still sounds better than ever! Even more amazing when you consider it is basically done by one guy in a home studio these days!
TheFeenee I only just found out about that a few days ago, but I'm tempted to order the album from them just to get access to all the behind the scenes stuff there!
#F--kingPioneer #Icon #AspergersGenius - First time I have been moved to tears by a song in a very long time. - Gary Numan is sublime here; the layers of the work, the nods to Jean Michelle Jarre and Vangelis (even Moby, who obviously drew inspiration from Numan), the sounds of synth from the late '70's and early '80s ... all are just heart-melting. Reminds me of my childhood, coupled with being in love with the man of my dreams. - For me, this is absolute gold. - Thank you, Gary, for this lovely piece of work.
This song speaks volumes to me, and I feel like we cannot ignore “the student becoming the teacher” in terms of Gary’s influence from Reznor and NIN. This song is so reminiscent of La Mer, The Great Below and a few other more melodic soundscape songs. This song is beautiful and I love every second of it but we cannot deny the influence of NIN upon this latest album.
Numan never fails to impress me. It's 40 years since Tubeway Army's first album he's still putting out incredible music and he hasn't lost a single step. Not many artists can have that kind of career longevity without selling out or resorting to producing schlock. Numan is amazing.
From the 80's till today, Mr. Numan continues to create a whole interactive experience with each song: and this is no different. This darkly loving ballad moved it's Listener's to great sweeps of emotions which isn't easy in today's modern apathetic world. Genius. Brilliant.
It is amazing what you discover after all these years. At 51 I look around and find... Gary Neuman. "Cars" was the last I heard (back in the day) and went about my business. Years turn, time counts... and I turn around. I saw "SAVAGE" and thought... "Give it a go" and I now... I have found the beginnings of you to what you are now sir. AMAZING... simply amazing. I want more... we NEED more of this. Creative, music that reaches and resonates to us more than 3.5 minutes at a time... songs that sing to your bones and you carry and make YOU remember, deep down, WHO YOU ARE. THIS... to me, is what this means. The man is a true genius.
Love this song. Hopefully can make it to the Nashville show. I've been a fan since '95 (ten years old). Finally got to see Numan in 2013 and it was awesome
I already missed the inception of Gary Numan as I was born in '83, so if he's still releasing music why the hell should I be missing him now?? Godfather of a genre and a prolific influence to some incredible artists. Get this legend more radio airtime!!
Been listening to this song all day. I lost a friend a couple days ago, and one of the last things she told me before she lost consciousness for the last time was that she had napped while listening to your music and she felt better afterward. I have no idea if you'll ever see this or if it will be lost in the noise, but just on the off chance, I wanted to say, you had a big fan in her and you made her final days a little bit easier. Thank you.
My introduction to Gary as an 11year old obsessed Bowie fan was actually through my uncle who would dress as him and was a huge fan but also my friend's older sister played his music whenever I was round visiting as she knew I liked him. I will get to see him one day!
I guess maybe one of the biggest crimes is that people knew Gary was huge in the 80s but nobody really stops and think that he might still be making music and that they should at least check don't forget about Gary
A very similar thing happened with Shriekback. They were slightly famous in the 80s, but they're doing their best stuff now, and hardly anyone knows about it.
Gary Numan's music isn't only good, it's great works of art & transcends the soul to the farthest reaches of the known universe.(& I dare say even beyond that) Keep your feet planted into the ground, Mr Numan, & keep pushing your creative musical enchantments to its limits.
I bought the album the pleasure principle in 1979 when my Son was born I never forgot the year Gary Numan was a big hit with our friends electric and cars we lost him to music in 1982 what a waste but this Album has to be his best so different worth the wait .Thank you Gary
I paint a picture in my mind, of my loved one, of Gary's loved one. This track has to be the most significant one on the record. The depth here is just uncharted. Gary's work is truly inspired and complicated. Been with the man since 1978, and hope to be with him forever. Because it all began... with him.
Just come across this for the first time and it moved me to tears. Beautiful lyrics that mean so much to me. Pure class, poetic, and so genuine. Gary you're a true diamond!!
We used this for our opening wedding song and my tough guy groom just started crying, as soon as he heard it. It really hit us both deeply. Incredible song and sentiment. The electronic nature of the song, as it was played outside in a beautiful park was really breath taking.
Why is there so much insipid, mass produced, uninspired horse shit getting played on the radio and tv when this guy is writing amazing songs like this? I just don't get it.
Because "the market" is controlled by a few dozen people who either finance, write or produce everything we're being force fed. The force feeding is achieved by "greasing" the radio stations. Only a few artists left who doesn't give a shit and can afford not to. Gary is one. IAMX is another (which is a friend of Gary's btw and has made the video for Ruin). Lorde and Imagine Dragons are good too and can play live btw, though they are partially forced through the meatgrinder. Sadly most if not all of Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Madonna and everything on the Spotify hitlists are pure crap written by the same three people that has plaqued the music business since Take That and Backstreet Boys. People will always choose wrong when exposed to it for long enough and in large enough numbers - just as convenience trumps sound and artistic quality every time, which is why everything on iTunes, Spotify and even CD's today is brickwalled and distorted so they can be played "loud" on a smartphone without crackling sounds from the minute crap speakers.
peter fox The world is that way by design. You have to dig deep for anything of true value and beauty... for the exceptional. Most people don't care to do this, so they consume what's easily accessible.
AKITM I hear what your saying, like I've always said. Its easy to feed pigs, they'll eat anything. I've been a numan fan since I was 13 years old.Im 52 next month.Numan was the reason I got into music in the first place, he was just so different from all of that dreadful 80's pop music that was around at the time. The drones can keep their sheeple radio and listen to cattle FM and whatever dross the x factor regurgitates next. They are welcome to it.
Holy shit! This is so shockingly amazing! Gary Numan! You once again did a DAMN GOOD job! I've been a fan since the start of 2014. So I'm a pretty new fan. But I lika almost all your music since the late 70s. You're amazing Gary!
I agree with both of you. He's amazing. And I'm also glad I'm not the only relatively young fan. And if Gary should actually happen to see this comment, I just wanna say: Gary. You know how to make art. And I mean ART. It's amazing. Keep up the great work Gary. And a reminder: If you ever feel down, think of your fans. We're here for you.
I can't wait for Gary's Sci-Fi novel that this is the soundtrack to!! The album is so evocative, that the story sounds amazing, already! PLEASE, Gary, finish it and put it out there for your fans to devour and let this masterpiece play along while I'm reading!
I always remember as a young 17 year visiting my step dad and mom who were living in England in 1979. I was excited to leave on the trip from LAX to Heathrow. Didn't sleep on the plane. I crashed upstairs being so exhausted. I woke up listen to Cars echoing through the house playing on the radio. Unbelievable artist, surely no one like him. Everytime I hear Cars I think of visiting my step father in England. He's passed now but the song triggers good memories. Gary Newman's music is so outstandingly timeless.
Oh my God this man has nailed it again, after all these years(I first saw him in concert Birmingham in 1980)he never fails to come up with the goods, I love this song, a beautiful man, with a beautiful voice and soul. What will we do when he's no longer here, will this song be our swan song?? The mans a genius, long live Gary Numan xx
Some of us feel depression, some of us feel joy with no reason, some of us delve into the depths of our own souls and feel the evil and the good lurking within. Some music pulls that feeling up through our guts and out our salivating mouths. We are the ones not afraid to be who we are, yet we hide among the living. The truth of human. The clear design of what we truly are. Since the early 80's Gary Numan has pulled my soul to it's intense position.. I don't think you realize, Gary, that you cradled many desperate souls between your words and your melodies. Bravo....We are but little people...simply beneath your stardom...but know your truly admired, respected, loved, and a definitive reason I am here at this moment alive and breathing.
I always loved Gary's style and music, always have and always will, ever since I heard Are Friends Electric back in May 1979... When I was really young, really struck a cord in me, wasn't even into music back then. this song really is emotional... sort of a mix of old and new... I love it!
Just a gorgeous song...I've been married for 17 years, and so much of this speaks to what it is like to be with someone for so long and know each other so well. Beautiful! ♥
Always knew GN as the guy that had that one hit in the 80's. YT recommended Ruin last month and, MAN, I had no idea what I was missing. Started buying my way back through his catalog and this is great stuff. Totally hyped for Savage next month.
Every musician of all genres with a loop, bleep, boop, sample and synth owes a huge thanks to Sir Gary Numan! I love his edgier music of the past few albums! And Persia singing on “My Name is Ruin” eclipses everything around her, even dad!
So pleased to be seeing him in December w/ my son, who is around the age I was when I saw him tour for "cars". Incredibly shocked by how inexpensive ticket prices were for a great venue here.
One of the things I want the most is a return of Numan to an album simply synthpop as in the early days. I'm glad he use more synth in the right way here but I want more.
Yeah , I too would like some more in the vein of the Tubeway days , but I know Gary is'nt into it - that does not mean I don't like where he is now ,he NEVER disappoints. I'll overlook the "funk" period, but he even managed to bring an uneasy edge to that genre. Talent at work there, folks . This tune has some synth elements that are redolent of the Tubeway sound ,so , satisfying on that level ,too . By gad! This fellow can do no wrong . Keep doing it , Mr. N. Proper, proper music.
Saw him at the Observatory in Santa Ana, CA the other week.. long-time fan, first-time concert. Outstanding, he puts on a stellar show. Moves pretty good for his age, I wish I had his energy!
What a real song. About Love. They say there are two most important days to a person. The day you were born and 2nd when you find out why.. Then he says in song so beautifully " I was born when you came into my world'.. Hes with her even at the end even in the begining of 2nd half if Eternity standing up for her to God. Wow a advocate for her. Just a special real song.
Gary Numan, since 79 kept on giving magical music to us, keeping up with the world and music genres, so have I, david Sylvain and off shoots of Japan, killing joke, Bauhaus, etc, its all in my DNA, this is brilliant and all inspiring, one day staggered in the future all our musical heroes will depart from this world, gary thanks for all your gems, just like bowie, you are great
How is Gary Numan not more popular?? Such an under-appreciated artist.
Harley Freeman

The industry is to blame.
Musicians adore him, especially anyone who's ever touched a synthesizer! His influence is utterly enormous.

Lyrics
I know your voice
And the words you speak lie
I know your face
When you're trying to hide your fears
I know your breath
When a thought makes you cry again
I know you well
And I've seen your tears
And it all began with you
I was born then died you came to me
And it all began with you
On the day you made the world
When you whisper my name I'll be with you
When you reach out your hand I'll be with you
When you walk to the light I'll be with you
When you stand before god I'll be with you
All that we are
Is more than I dreamed
All that we shared
Is more than a life can hold
All that we have
Is more than we'll ever need
All that we lost
Is nothing but time
And it all began with you
And it ends for me the day you leave
And it all began with you
So today we stop the world
When you whisper my name I'll be with you
When you reach out your hand I'll be with you
When you walk to the light I'll be with you
When you stand before god I'll be with you

This song speaks volumes to me, and I feel like we cannot ignore “the student becoming the teacher” in terms of Gary’s influence from Reznor and NIN. This song is so reminiscent of La Mer, The Great Below and a few other more melodic soundscape songs.
This song is beautiful and I love every second of it but we cannot deny the influence of NIN upon this latest album.
I feel the same about Jean Michel - maybe a little Vangelis - but in total 100% Gary Numan and a great emotion transfered by this Song my heart
Numan never fails to impress me. It's 40 years since Tubeway Army's first album he's still putting out incredible music and he hasn't lost a single step. Not many artists can have that kind of career longevity without selling out or resorting to producing schlock. Numan is amazing.
Great musician gone under the radar for decades now... We were always there...
Absolutely bawled my eyes out. Gary goes full on Hans Zimmer and cranks up the emotion to breaking point. Beautiful, magnificent and astonishing.
Absolutely!!!
He's incredible. I love his music and always have.
He saved my life
wow. after all these years. welcome home, brother ❤
From the 80's till today, Mr. Numan continues to create a whole interactive experience with each song: and this is no different. This darkly loving ballad moved it's Listener's to great sweeps of emotions which isn't easy in today's modern apathetic world. Genius. Brilliant.
There is no one else. There is only oneself.
Well said.
Excellent sum up!
Love this song. Hopefully can make it to the Nashville show. I've been a fan since '95 (ten years old). Finally got to see Numan in 2013 and it was awesome
Insane that this dosent get the airplay it deserves..
Insane..shame on the bbc
Living Legend
Madly in love with this new album. Just wow
Tara Rodgers his work just keeps getting better.
It was a re discovery of Gary Numan for me. His newer work is AMAZING!
Agreed
I already missed the inception of Gary Numan as I was born in '83, so if he's still releasing music why the hell should I be missing him now?? Godfather of a genre and a prolific influence to some incredible artists. Get this legend more radio airtime!!
This has already become the song i want played at my own funeral.
Crowsbaneful I would love to see gorgeous Gary in real life
Most beautiful love song ever.
dark and beautiful as always - Gary just keeps getting better
I guess maybe one of the biggest crimes is that people knew Gary was huge in the 80s but nobody really stops and think that he might still be making music and that they should at least check don't forget about Gary
A very similar thing happened with Shriekback. They were slightly famous in the 80s, but they're doing their best stuff now, and hardly anyone knows about it.
Ade F. deserves a lot of credit too, no one ever mentions him.
Mark Pattison I agree ade deserves some credit for this.
WE LOVE ADE !!
Trent Reznor of NIN makes no secret of his admiration. NIN is also inspired music that not many understand. Their loss is our gain.
@@maureenwagg5305 Pretty sure we "understand" NIN music, but thanks for commenting.
One of the best comeback albums I have ever heard.
Oh my....this is beautiful!! What harmony and meaning,
This is music.
Love it, love ,it...
I think Mr Numan might just have written the best love song ever!
Gary Numan's music isn't only good, it's great works of art & transcends the soul to the farthest reaches of the known universe.(& I dare say even beyond that) Keep your feet planted into the ground, Mr Numan, & keep pushing your creative musical enchantments to its limits.
Oml, this is how I feel when I listen to his music. He opens gates to another worlds for us. I can't describe it really, but this is how I feel.
I bought the album the pleasure principle in 1979 when my Son was born I never forgot the year Gary Numan was a big hit with our friends electric and cars we lost him to music in 1982 what a waste but this Album has to be his best so different worth the wait .Thank you Gary
Great song, really grows on you. Another great tune from a great artist.
Robert Z
This is an old song. He did a great adaption.
Where is it from orginially?
It sounds kinda like wicked game, but it's not. Pretty sure this is an original.
Yea he's a genius
One Proud Dad.. Best Single for years
Außergewöhnlich macht meine Musik ein gutes Gefühl, ihre Musik trifft meine Seele
Taken my breath away. This track is nothing short of simply stunning. Even just listening, I feel almost honoured. Amazing talent.
Gary Numan is most definitely a musical Genius. I've been a NUMANOID for 41yrs and I ALWAYS will be.
We used this for our opening wedding song and my tough guy groom just started crying, as soon as he heard it. It really hit us both deeply. Incredible song and sentiment. The electronic nature of the song, as it was played outside in a beautiful park was really breath taking.
Gary Numan… so underrated and under appreciated.
They are welcome to it.
peter fox not quite as old as you but not far off it but totally agree with you !!!!
It's always been that way.
I really like this song. I wasn't that crazy about "My name is ruin" , but this is a masterpiece.
This song should easily have over 100mil views.
Speaking as someone who 'lost' what you were doing mid 80's... it is a pleasure to stand corrected, Mr Numan. Thank you.
Numan's still the greatest yodler outside of Bavaria
Gary is one of the rare breeds of singers whose vocals don't deteriorate and they sound 21 for life.
I absolutely love this man!
me too...
Random Bongo Guy It's hard not to! 😁
=)
SILENCE! We are in the presence of the Numan, let's us bow down and worship him!
Holy shit! This is so shockingly amazing! Gary Numan! You once again did a DAMN GOOD job! I've been a fan since the start of 2014. So I'm a pretty new fan. But I lika almost all your music since the late 70s. You're amazing Gary!
Mr. Jensen- Same here. Discovered him in late 2013, bought all of his album since. He quickly became one of my favourite of all time
+Prentice978b L I'm glad I'm not the only relatively young fan lol. his new album is incredible and this is stunning
Been a young fan since 2014 too! Now he's my favourite artist along with Depeche Mode.
Word of the Day: "Chockingly"
Always love you and now your talented daughter Persia. Thank you for your beautiful voice and music and talent.
Fantastic track .
Gary is so talented 😍
I can't wait for Gary's Sci-Fi novel that this is the soundtrack to!! The album is so evocative, that the story sounds amazing, already! PLEASE, Gary, finish it and put it out there for your fans to devour and let this masterpiece play along while I'm reading!
I have so much respect for this man. I am a metal head, but I this music I really, really am beginning to like it.
Beautiful! ♥
Tears just came down hearing this.. its just beatific and so desperately lonely. I love it :)
This man gets better and better seen Gary numan love at uea wow what a concert
Always knew GN as the guy that had that one hit in the 80's. YT recommended Ruin last month and, MAN, I had no idea what I was missing. Started buying my way back through his catalog and this is great stuff. Totally hyped for Savage next month.
Pure magic ,this song sends a chill down my spine ,Electric!!!
Another stunning song from Gary. This man can do no wrong!!
Every musician of all genres with a loop, bleep, boop, sample and synth owes a huge thanks to Sir Gary Numan! I love his edgier music of the past few albums! And Persia singing on “My Name is Ruin” eclipses everything around her, even dad!
He's back big time recently and I've followed him from the late seventies what a singer / Writer he is !!
Brilliant and beautiful song.
Gary Numan at his best. this song is superb.
I Will be present at his concert Tomorrow in Antwerp. I'm excited and i'm still a fan.
Stunning, amazing, haunting. Love it.
So pleased to be seeing him in December w/ my son, who is around the age I was when I saw him tour for "cars". Incredibly shocked by how inexpensive ticket prices were for a great venue here.
One of the things I want the most is a return of Numan to an album simply synthpop as in the early days. I'm glad he use more synth in the right way here but I want more.
you can't go home again
Yeah , I too would like some more in the vein of the Tubeway days , but I know Gary is'nt into it - that does not mean I don't like where he is now ,he NEVER disappoints. I'll overlook the "funk" period, but he even managed to bring an uneasy edge to that genre. Talent at work there, folks . This tune has some synth elements that are redolent of the Tubeway sound ,so , satisfying on that level ,too . By gad! This fellow can do no wrong . Keep doing it , Mr. N. Proper, proper music.
Great song..great lyrics...
You gotta tip your hat to Gary Numan To transcend genres and refine his craft after all these years is nothing short of amazing! I'm floored Thank you
Saw him at the Observatory in Santa Ana, CA the other week.. long-time fan, first-time concert.
Gary, this song is another one of your wonderful pieces of art. God Bless and thanks for decades of great music and incredible shows.
