Helloooo Barry, good to see you back, I'll be interested to see if your attack of Covid affects your taste buds like my dose affected mine? I had a dose a few years ago and it has completely changed my preferences for my choice of beer - I can't stand the stronger citrusy tastes any more. Also nice to see a businessman who puts his principles before his profits, what a shame our ancestors didn't have the foresight to see the damage caused by recklessly reaping everything from the sea, and instead, putting something back to preserve stocks.

So far, so good at my end.
This is the 2nd time I've caught it, and the 2nd time, it's taken me 10 days to get over it🙈🤷♂️
What's done is done with the ancestors thing, but to be fair, we fish far more destructively these days than they ever did, and it seems like we haven't learned our lesson.
Also, to be fair, some of the mentality of the fishermen are still the same thought process as the old fisheres. It's that we need to change, but at the same time I don't blame them, for some, that's how they were taught, and for others, they are backed into a corner and it's the only way they can fish, so it's a really a vicious circle 😞🙈🤣🤣🤣

It really is a case of getting the head down and getting on with it.
As long the people know how hard it is for fishing folk worldwide to earn a living, then my job here is done.
It's the people's awareness and keenness to help that can make all the difference to our lives by pressuring their MP's to help make changes, and things are changing with more folks like myself with similar channels all talking about the same excruciating pressure putting on them by government desk loving jockeys.

Funny thing; I came to Dunbar on the 17th June specifically to see your boat (yes I have a pic but the boat looked forlorn settled on the bottom at low tide), and within a few days I had Covid too. Must be in the air. I too am wondering how on earth you scratch a living doing something you so enjoy and can tell it means so much to you.
You live up to your motto 'fishing for the future, not just for today'. Looks like you have regained your strength after your elbow op; I'm getting my muscle re-attached to my collarbone this week and will try to emulate your recovery thanks for the inspiration. Life is so tough, even the seagulls are hungry. Looks a right pantomime with them all behind you. All the best.

The only advice I can give is to listen to the doctors and not push yourself.

The only thing I can suggest is to write the "secretary of state of environment, food and rural affairs MP."
But who that is at the moment I really don't know 🤔
But I'm sure nothing will change as these people have an agenda..get rid of the fishing to replaced with so called " green" wind turbines....it's happening all over the country and now they are squeezing the life out of the inshore sector,( which won't take much)
We've seen it down in Cornwall already, and " find a fishing boat" is full of these small vessels that can't get quota for their fishery, because they fish right where these planned turbines are going.
Once again, it's the greed of the powerful, stepping on the working man.😞🙈

It's so sad to see Dunbar loosing it's boats because of ridicules laws be implemented by Pen Pushers who have no idea what it's like being a fisherman in our country. Your trying to earn a living with one hand tied behind your backs. You're helping to feed the nation, don't they damn well understand that? All these foreign boats fish near our 12 mile limits, some even poaching inside, yet they don't do a damn thing to stop them. They would rather make our fishing financially untenable for you and the rest of our fishermen doing the most dangerous work in the country. Ok I've had my spout. During my lifetime I have seen almost all day fishing boats disappear. I come from near Deal down in Kent and we used to have 20 plus day boats working off the beach who could sell their catch direct to the public when landed. The boats were a huge tourist attraction as well as providing top quality produce. Successive local authorities and governments have destroyed this way of life and then have the temerity to say we (as a population) do not eat much fish so the quota will be given to foreigners. The old, past its sell by date rubbish they sell in supermarkets is not very appealing so now we do not eat much fish but we certainly would is we could still buy it fresh from the fishermen who should be allowed to catch what is requested and in season. I do not blame you for seriously considering what is best for your family even if it does mean giving up a way of life that you clearly love. I believe I am right in saying that if I lived in Dunbar and asked you to provide me with 6 fresh mackerel you would not be allowed to sell them to me?

I can not sell you mackerel for profit, as I don't have the entitlement on my licence to do so.
A few years ago, I tried in vain to get it added, but as usual, the small quota that was given out was swallowed up by the big players. The whole system is unfair and corrupt. But it all starts with bad management from the top.
And unfortunately, our inshore fleets future is certainly in jeopardy due to this bad management.
But that's what happens when no one with fishing experience makes the rules...common sense has gone completely. 🙈😞

Hi Barry good to see you are recovering your health. I understand the drive to provide for your family and the frustration with all the government interference. But I really hope you do keep fishing and providing the super content you post. This world needs more proper fishermen like you. Not only at sea but part of life in general, maybe you should run for government? I for one would vote for you. Keep going for as long as you can the Lindsey B and your subscribers need you.

Just to ask how many crews fish the same water as you. Surely, there must be competition when you pull in with a decent catch. She's a Cygnus GM21, and the engine is a Beta 43hp with 280 PRM gearbox, and I know I'm biased, but she is the best sea going boat I've ever worked, for her size.

@@onemanandhisboat gear reduction usually starts with the recreational fisheries, that way the government gets you fighting with your neighbour, takes the heat of them.
Then you have to buy”shares” so that each licence has a value on its own without the vessel, then quota where you have to buy your business back again. Sorry to sound so negative but you cannnae trust shiny bums mate

From what I've seen over the last 5 years their is no season, just one storm in between a few days fishing after another.
And if we can't spend some proper time with our families, what the hell is the point to all this after all, I work to live, not live to work!
