Yeah I could hear that excitement in your in your voice so no mistaking that one I went the other direction I went from an RT to a GS both of them are superb ride safe and stay upright
Michael, you’re the second person today who has commented that you’ve gone from RT to GS - in the case of the other guy a GSA. Of course that totally makes sense if the GS platform provides you more as a rider than the RT, and yes, the good news is either way you go they’re both incredible bikes. Enjoy yours! And yes, ride safe.
Hey Ged, so good to share in your ‘post purchase glow!’ ;-) if your phone is charging, a green light should come on in the compartment. That’s stage one of the fun and games you’re going to have getting the phone / bike playing nice together… It can be “challenging”. Once it’s done it seems to stay done though - I have very few issues with mine ( but I do use the usb to charge - it runs cooler and charges faster) Can’t wait to hear more impressions. 👍👍
Thanks Simon. The map worked flawlessly over the weekend. My wife's iPhone 12 Pro will wirelessly charge, as will my work phone, which is an 11, but my iPhone 12, which I wirelessly charge on my desk daily, will not charge on the bike. It works for a few seconds (with the green light), but then stops, and the light flashes yellow. Strange.
@@TheJedRides according to the manual flashing yellow means “excessive temperature or disruptive foreign object on the charger”. Maybe try it without the case to see if that’s the problem?
@@TheJedRides that’s too bad. I know it sounds crazy but maybe get a cheap “bike phone”. That’s what I did. I don’t like talking on the bike anyway and it means your actual phone isn’t bouncing around and overheating. Don’t let it take the shine off - she’s a beauty!

Had a similar problem and found that the problem went away when I took the I phone 12 out of the case. Also found that the phone needs to be orientated properly. Congrats on your new RT. Got mine 2 weeks ago.
Very nice choice sir. I had a 2013 K1600GT and sold it earlier this year. I now realize that I need to be riding a R1250RT instead. Looks amazing. Enjoy!
Bike looks fantastic. Really like what they did with the display. That will keep you busy for a few days. You guys will have to do a cross country lawn chair trip.
I had a small iPhone 12 and it would not charge consistently. Phone died on me daily on the first long trip. I started using the nav app less to keep phone alive. A bit frustrating since you expect BMW to work the bugs out of a system. After all, we are paying for a good design. I traded up to a iPhone 13 Pro and still have similar problems, although not as bad. I have not tried a short USB cable yet. I'm hoping that helps, and also helps with the Nav App. Doesn't seem to be as reliable and easy to use like the Garmin, but it is nice when it is working. Can't beat the TFT screen. Love the ride, but the screen seems too small, I get pelted with rain during wet weather riding, right into my face. My old RT1250 2005 created a nice bubble as I moved through the rain. Also think about raising the handlebars, but have not seen a riser I like yet. Appreciate your video. Despite the complaints I still love the RT, mine is a 2021 and no radio though...
John, I just got the latest software update at my 600 mile break-in service. My iPhone 12 worked with wireless charging on the first try, and after a 40 mile ride using maps I had a full battery. Maybe brighter days ahead?

That looks like the standard seat. Do you have it in the high or low position? What is your height and inseam if you don't mind me asking? I know there is no substitute for sitting on the bike myself, but the BMW dealership is a good clip away. Plan on any Wunderlich or Ilium crash bars? Bike looks amazing!
Yes, standard seat in the low position. I'm 5'9" with a 30" inseam. I am not planning to add crash bars. It's subjective, but I prefer the look of the RT as clean as possible. And thanks -- I love this bike! 👍
@@TheJedRides A fair point about the bars. The Ilium drop video convinced me of the utility and my sport bike sliders have saved my fairing before too. Sounds like I may have to use the low seat with my 29 inch inseam. I comfortably ride 31 to 32 inch sport bikes, but I know the BMW is wider. Been loving the vids and thanks for the info.
My RT finally showed up after 18,000 miles of riding. Like two different bikes. Don’t see how a test ride of even a whole day could convince one to purchase it. Low airy spinning power delivery is not at all impressive, until breakin of 16 to 18 thousand miles. Then it’s Locomotive roll on. Fabulous.
Hey Jed. Congrats on the new bike and greetings from snowy Finland. I hopped on my own new RT on April Fools last year and clocked almost 10,000 miles on it before putting it into winter storage. Love the bike. It is my third successive RT and since I have zero interest in offroading, I will stick to this model. The farkles I put on the bike included a Russel Daylong Seat (best seat ever!) and Wunderlich bar risers (eliminated the pain between the shoulder blades). Depending on your riding habits, these may be unnecessary, but since I like to take long trips to Finnish Lapland and to the Arctic Ocean shores i Norway, a comfortable multi-hour seat is a must. I've tried Airhawks etc. and so far nothing compares to the Daylong seat. It does take a long time to break in, though. I had problems with wireless phone charging at first as well but they could be traced to my old, inefficient iPhone. I talked to my dealer and he said that his iPhone XR charged just fine, and because of that, I upgraded to a new iPhone SE. No problemos any more. If you have access to some other phone that charges wirelessly, why don't you try it first. We have so much snow in the parking lot that it will be mid May before I'll be able to start the new season. Enjoy your new ride 🙂
Thanks for the kind words and the phone advice. I will definitely try programming the buttons and will post a video when I do. Sorry about all the snow!
Congrats James! I know the bike well. My first BMW was an ‘04 R1150RT. Did the twin spark continue from ‘04 to 05’? I can’t remember. IlWhat a great bike. Have fun!
Hi Jed. Do you still have the RT ? How's it going, still enjoying it ? I picked up mine on Tuesday 22/08/23 and I love it ! Funnily enough I'm over your way at the end of September .... wish I was on the bike but we'll be in a car 🙂 Anyway. enjoy the bike - they're great !
Well ... no, I don't. I sold it a few weeks ago to a subscriber who lives in Northern California. It was a difficult decision, but I wanted to spend time with a Harley touring bike, and I couldn't keep both. I am confident I can pick up another RT used at a reasonable price, though, when/if I decide to do so. None of my thoughts on the RT, by the way, are any different than they were in my videos. I will say, unequivocally, that the RT is the best sport touring bike that can be had. Enjoy yours!
Oh well we move on :-) I'm on my third RT but this is the first with the TFT screen and I'm really happy with it. Mine's a used one too, although it's only got 1500 miles on it, i'll keep it a while and we'll see 🙂
Beautiful bike, bro ! I own a '15 RT and have put many trouble-free miles on it. The only issues I have with these BMW's is the clunky tranny (not anything like the butter smooth Japanese iterations), but other than that, nearly ideal for my kind of riding. It is also relatively easy for one to do his own maintenance on these bikes (other than air filter swaps !!). Good luck with the machine !!
After riding both the GSA GS and the RT I bought a 2012 RT since I don’t ride off-road last June and I love it! I was disappointed in the software integration with my phone for navigation and music but love the bike. The last software update fixed most of the integration issues so it’s thumbs up now. Great bike which is big fun on the backroads (it kicks butt on the twisties), around town and the highways, you’re going to love it 🥰
Bill, I presume you meant 2021 rather than 2012 on the RT? Yes, of the few miles (300 or so) I have on the bike, almost all have been canyons, and all with big smiles.
Well done jed, what a beauty , in order for my iPhone 13 pro to charge wirelessly I need to take it out of its case (magsafe one) its also a bit fussy on position , enjoy the bike ps mine has not stereo (yes kenny ) and behind the covers is more massive storage (i have a compressor, puncture repair kit and toolkit and first aid kit! look up the new bmw 1250 rt on fb groups! Great point of reference for you and anyone else reading this 👍 ride safe bro
Thank you. This one has a radio prep kit, and I will have them install the radio unit when it comes in from Germany, but only so I can compete for airwaves with Kenny!
Congratulations - beautiful bike - i`m owner of the r 1250rs and i love my bike. Would like to make a tour with you but it`s a little bit far. Greetings fom Bavaria
Congratulations on your new bike... I'd slow down a bit in traffic while getting used to my new machine... Just sayin'... Good stuff thanks for posting.
Did you figure out the bike charger? I've also got a 2022 RT - I've found the bike charger basically maintains the cell phone battery and if you are using the Motorad Nav functions the bike charger does not keep up - kind of like using Waze - which is a cell phone battery hog...so - when I'm using the Motorad Nav Function - I plug my Optimate charger in the port on the right side and run the cord to my phone which is in a RAM mount above the throttle...
Interesting, thanks Fred. Yes, I figured out that my phone case was the culprit. Trading cases with my wife solved the problem. But I also bought a short, right angle USB cable that just barely fits inside the phone compartment on the bike.
Congrats Jed!! Bike looks great! I’m a 1 year R1250 GS owner and thinking of the same thing. Is there a better bike for me? I look forward to more videos!!
Uh-oh, Jim, people are going to accuse me of starting a movement if you switch from a GS too! But I will bring more videos and you can decide for yourself. 👍🏼
Hi Jed, I have got a great R1200RT since June 2017, already 138.500 km. What a GREAT machine. I am considering to get the 2022 or 2023 new one. May I ask you what is that thing behind the TFT screen ? I have asked few BMW dealerships in NL/BEL/DEU and no one has any idea ! It seems original ! Enjoy your new toy ! Cheers, Andreu
Andreu, sounds like you've been putting your RT through its paces! The thing behind the TFT screen is, I believe, a radio antenna, but I am more than capable of being misinformed as to that fact!
Hi Jed! I just got one of these transitioning from the GS (got the 719 mineral white one!) at a dealership across the country after watching your review!! I was wondering if you have a recommendation for a reliable shipper. It seems like with the reviews I’m reading online, its a hit or miss…and I hate this to be a miss. Thanks in advance for any reliable recommendation.
Congrats Yarden! I think you’re going to love it. I wish I had a good recommendation for you, but I think it’s true that they are hit or miss. I shipped a BMW from a dealer half way across the country using this shipper with good results: funtransport.com/ , but it was pre-pandemic and I have no idea whether they are still owned/operated by the same people. I would ask the dealer who they have used. (Though you probably have.).
My 2022 1250Rt came without the chip for the ACC. So you can’t engage the active part of the cruise control. My dealer told me next to go is the Dynamic ESA chip components if the shortage keeps up.
Mine, too. There’s a part list to retrofit it when the parts become available in the US. I am not sure whether I will add it or not. I can’t see myself using it much.
Jeff, I'm not missing it, but keep in mind part of my willingness to make the switch was an admission that I wasn't likely going to take it offroad. If I wanted to do any of that, I would not have made the move. Meanwhile, 650 miles in, I am really loving the RT. Had a.great ride this morning, even in the rain. 😊👍🏼
@@TheJedRides Thanks,,Yeah, I get it. I've owned a GSA since 2014 and at 63 the bikes starting to get a bit heavy for me when I get in deep sand. I hate admitting to get old, but facts are facts. I actually test rode the R1250RT 2 years ago, and ended up buying the R1250R,, Awesome bike, but the protection the RT has is hard to beat for touring.
the phone charges when you place it in the compartment. you should see green light when it’s charging. it charges wirelessly. that’s how my iphone 13 charges. see you on the road. blue 21
Thanks, yes. For reasons unknown my iPhone 12 will not charge there, whether in or out of its case. It will start to charge but then quickly stop. The light will go from green to flashing yellow. My wife’s iPhone 12 Pro will charge, as will my 11. Very odd.
@@TheJedRides I have to keep my phone to the left side of the compartment and locking in place with that latch. I’m not a big fan of the app. it takes time for it to log in. If the weather doesn’t show show on your phone the navigation won’t work correctly example when it’s not reading the local weather when it show that in downtown la. when i’m actually at my home in winchester. if you list to a music app it must be connected first before starting the nav app “tap to start. join” my 21 doesn’t have radio. maybe your came with radio 22. great bike love your channel and Kenny complements your. channel. s
I had a used 2009 retired Police Bike. The seat was like setting on plywood and my knees would be killing me after about a 200 mile ride. How is the seat on this and do you feel like your knees are too high. I have a Harley, I also had my back fusion surgery and it is killing my back so I’m looking at a BMW or Goldwing.
Marc, this is pretty subjective stuff and I don't want to steer you wrong. You've got to go sit on one and ideally demo one for yourself so you can decide. I can't comment on the seat from a 2009 police bike, but I imagine the footpegs are in similar position to the new bikes, so if your knees weren't good on the '09 I suspect you won't like the new one. I do, though, and so does Kenny, who is 6'3" or so. I actually like the seat on mine, too, but a lot of people (including Kenny) change them out. I have a Harley too -- an FXR with mid controls, and I am pretty comfortable on that too, but I put a Saddlemen seat on that one. Good luck!
@@TheJedRides I started my Motorcycle Police career on an FXR Police. It was fast but very top heavy. I bought a seat from Corbin for my BMW but traded it before it arrived. I’m going to our dealer to ride one, thanks.
Hi, just curious are your feet both flat on the ground when you come to a stop? The dealer I spoke to had no idea how I could lower the bike so I would have both feet flat on a stop. He suggested eBay….. a BMW dealer too. I am very disappointed. I really like this bike too.
Looked the video again he went out on the bike with his cell at 70% and with in 4 hours of road time the cell was starting to die he never states what phone he had so no help there but its looking like a BMW issue

Mine's a used one too, although it's only got 1500 miles on it, i'll keep it a while and we'll see 🙂
@@brig10r have fun and ride safe!
Thank you, Gerald. Agree that the transmission is clunky! But the shift assist helps.
The "clunky" shifting occurs when you shift too soon at low RPMs. At higher RPMs it is very smooth.
I have GSX 1250 & thinking about an RT. I'll tag along with you for a while to see what you think of yours.
Thanks for coming along, Ian. I took my first road trip on it last weekend and a video will drop tomorrow morning.
Congratulations! 👏😜👍
Thanks Billy!
Congrats
Thanks J.L.
Geoff, thanks. And glad you've put that speaker space to good use!
Sweet looking bike - congrats! Sounds like a beast. Did it come with the radio option? Look forward to the comparison to the GS.
Thanks Samuel! I rode with two friends on RSs last week. They were FAST!
Congratulations on your new bike... I'd slow down a bit in traffic while getting used to my new machine... Just sayin'... Good stuff thanks for posting.
ALWAYS a good reminder, Dwight, thanks!
@@TheJedRides Thanks for taking the time to respond... Will be watching for more of your videos.
Congrats! Sweet black beauty like a big horse! Yeah just so balanced like a nice 5-series ha.
Thanks! And yes, power like a 5 series, but handles like an M3!
Hi Jed,
I have got a great R1200RT since June 2017, already 138.500 km.
What a GREAT machine.
I am considering to get the 2022 or 2023 new one.
May I ask you what is that thing behind the TFT screen ?
I have asked few BMW dealerships in NL/BEL/DEU and no one has any idea !
It seems original !
Enjoy your new toy !
Cheers,
Andreu
Andreu, sounds like you've been putting your RT through its paces! The thing behind the TFT screen is, I believe, a radio antenna, but I am more than capable of being misinformed as to that fact!
@@TheJedRides Many Thanks for your feedback.
Radio antenna ! OK.
(Though you probably have.).
iPhone 12 with MagSafe tech won’t work with the BMW wireless charging system. I plug in the cable when I take long trips.
Thanks Brad.
I DON'T SEE MANY MOTORCYCLES AROUND... ONLY CARS
Way too many cars!
Hi there, can you please share your software version with us? Thanks!
Missing the GS yet? Its been a bit since you bought the RT.
I'm contemplating selling my GSA for the 2022 RT
Been contemplating getting this orbthe k1600 over a harley streetglide (which I've had before)...
Thoughts??❤
Pro tip - people come here to hear about the bike, not about your inability to realize a phone case prevents wireless charging …
Thanks. I actually get a low of questions and comments about the phone charging and connectivity. Just trying to be helpful, but I take your point.
the phone charges when you place it in the compartment. you should see green light when it’s charging. it charges wirelessly. that’s how my iphone 13 charges. see you on the road.
If the weather doesn’t show show on your phone the navigation won’t work correctly example when it’s not reading the local weather when it show that in downtown la. when i’m actually at my home in winchester. if you list to a music app it must be connected first before starting the nav app “tap to start. join” my 21 doesn’t have radio. maybe your came with radio 22. great bike love your channel and Kenny complements your. channel. s
R1250RT 👍
Thanks! 🙏
Bet it feels awesome to have that sexy RT in your garage. 👍
I cannot tell a lie -- it absolutely does, and I keep making excuses to go check on her! 😎
@@TheJedRides I'd been the same way. Have fun with it a be safe on the road friend.
@@rmcdudmk212 Will do!
@@marceaton3128 Good luck Marc. (And, yeah, no way would I want an FXR as a motor officer but it's a blast as a weekend ride!)
Can I ask how tall you are? What is your inseam? I'm wondering how tall the bike will feel
Sure. I’m 5’9”, 30 inch inseam.
@@TheJedRides thank you sir-Hope the bike treats you well
@@Weaselbeak75 thanks!
Hi, just curious are your feet both flat on the ground when you come to a stop? The dealer I spoke to had no idea how I could lower the bike so I would have both feet flat on a stop. He suggested eBay….. a BMW dealer too. I am very disappointed. I really like this bike too.
In top gear, what are the RPMs at 80 mph?
Somewhere in the range of 3200-3500.
FFS use the quick shifter.
LMAO! I do, I promise!
Needs Apple Car play in the worst way
Agree!
Watched a video on an R18 and his cell phone wasn’t charging just like yours did he wasn’t sure why.
Interesting. Do you know which phone he was using?
Looked the video again he went out on the bike with his cell at 70% and with in 4 hours of road time the cell was starting to die he never states what phone he had so no help there but its looking like a BMW issue
Jed, the RTs are just so good! My wife and I took a test ride on a '22 a few weeks ago. I put the deposit down before we left the dealership and hopefully it'll be here in another two weeks. Can't wait to pick it up!
That is awesome! Congrats from The Jed, TheJim!
@@TheJedRides I just saw the FXR you've got. It looks great. I have an '83 Superglide as well.
@@TheJim623 '83 Superglide is an awesome bike -- well done!
Nice!
Thanks! 👍🏼
U waited 24 years for a new bike ! as they say, good things or rather the best things are worth waiting for...
Truth.
Dont like boxer engines. The RT has fiddly controls
Michael, thanks for your comment. What is it about the boxer you don't like? Can you explain more why the controls are "fiddly"?
A bike that costs more than 30K sounds like a broken grinder!
More than 30K? Not mine. and I like to think of it as sounding like a sewing machine -- but a tough one!
@@TheJedRides Sewing ma.. 😆 OK, as long as you're happy with it 🙂 For the cost, in The Netherlands it's bit more than 30k EURO, imagine!
