@@IanTed It is a engine made by man. I have owned 8 BMW Boxers one with 128,000 miles and never opened. As a motorcycle dealer we sold many used ones through the years with no issues. If you check dealerships of all makes have service departments full on bikes.
Another superb, thorough review. BMW really does tick every box for the modern world. My concern is regarding seat, as always. I'm keen to at least sit on one to get a feel and see how I manage.
Takes me 300 miles or a tank full before I start to feel uncomfortable on the stock seat. Handy that is the same time as needing more fuel. If your going to take a test ride ask if you can have it for 4 hours. There are plenty of after market seats, Sargeants being one of the best.
Just bought the 2020 R1250 RT, still learning it. My bike needs an adapter cable to charge the phone unfortunately. Just learned how to adjust the DSA suspension setting, having to get used to the seating ergonomics as it slides the rider forward also.
No doubt this is the distance tourer of choice. I had a 2013 / 90 Jahre edition for 3 years, doing a lot of motorway mileage to visit a relative in hospital 240 mile / 386 km round journeys. I found i was flattening the very expensive tyres quickly. Also, even though it was probably the best tourer, I still found it tiring, I was in my early my sixties, so I decided to get a car for motorway journeys and different type of motorcycles for two up light touring. I agree these are great bikes, but I can’t imagine going up and down motorways / highways is much fun on any bike. Motorways are best for cars. A & B roads best for bikes. I miss that 2013 air cooled boxer engine though. Tigers and Bonnevilles for me now.
Agree that a car is always better on the motorway, but if you're touring there will always be those days when you just need to get the miles in between the good roads.
@@motobob - yes, I might start hiring bikes at further destinations. That way get to experience different bikes too. I know hiring bikes is expensive but so is changing bikes. I might hire a R1250RT in the South of France one day...
I wished I could afford this when I bought my Ducati Sports Tourer, except for the price!! This new model is lovely but I’ll have to wait for a used (or should I say pre-loved) one in 202*?
@@motobob it was to do with the leaking US hayes callipers, there were drips on some RTs and GSs. BMW replaced seals in some callipers, and now use an updated calliper. In the US, the US Govt put a safety order out and all 1250s were being sold with Brembo callipers. On another forum I am on, some guys in the US have their bikes, but not sure if with Hayes or Brembo callipers
Hm I had the 2020 RT for a few days, while waiting forty 1250 GSA. It's fun to ride, but for the taller ones amongst us, it's just cramped. There is not enough legroom because of the fairing on the tank. I never have back pain riding a GSA, but I was so glad to give this machine back to the dealer and ride a GSA again. I owned a K1600 in the past for riding to work and that one was way bigger in the seating area.
I am not so tall, 5' 9'' but I do have long arms and ride a 09 1200rt and keep pushing my self back toward the rear of my seat to get a better ride and my back doesn't bother me nearly as much, I really had those old seats but if you have a custom one done they all add two inches to the height I have read and I don't need that at all. I tore up the under neath of my seat so my feet could be flat on the ground but the seat is just not long enough for my arms, never had this trouble with seats in the 70's.
I can go 20k, but not 24/25 as these bikes are selling for currently..plus...I'm still considering a GS.....might be able to poach one when the model years change...but, this adaptive cruise control kind of gives me the creeps. I like the ability of it to keep you off a certain distance to what's in front of you, but beyond that, it's ingrained in me, and maybe it is with other riders that I have to control the bike, faster, slower, left or right. I don't know. If I'm on the fence about it, I'm leaning toward the side not using it more than the side using it. At least for now.
Good mile / kilometer muncher I suppose..I prefer the 1250RS personally. Too much "stuff". Adaptive cruise is very cool, but is it needed? We have a lot to pay attention to as a motorcyclist and following distance is close to number one, so I can see a benefit if distracted momentarily.
Nice vid Rob, a niche bike and maybe hard to justify as an 'only bike' unless all you did was huge motorway mile commutes? Would love the big screen on my F series. BMW are struggling though with the software connectivity when pairing phones, helmets and satnavs on the older screens. I think they're getting it sorted but the phone app is a little flaky unless your bikes firmware is fully up to date. Hopefully the tech on these '21 bikes is all sorted. Whilst I still love the Triumph brand, the BMW's are really making some good bikes at the moment and I'm happy to be part of that family. You really need a BMW in your garage sometime soon.....an R9T to replace the Street Twin!
I'm due to upgrade next summer, so it will be evolution for me. But I do hope that we see a better range of colours, because none of the current crop inspires me.
Can you turn the radar off if the cruise is on? We have a car with that feature, but we can't turn the damned thing off if the cruise is on. It does not like rain storms and the has a tendency to disable the cruise completely in some cases. Annoying as Hell.
I'm with you. I took a look at the price for a replacement screen and, sadly, the new RT is off my list. Too bad, as I really wanted to get one as a retirement gift to myself in three years.
@@jeanc819 In three years time you should know how reliable the TFT screen is. Treat yourself I bought myself a R1200rt when I retired and have had no problems with it in 3 years.
@@rows10 You make a very good point. I've been riding my '08 RT since new, and would dearly love to upgrade to another RT. Over time, I've discovered that replacement parts and repairs do not come cheap, especially electronics. That being said, unless this new RT series meets or exceeds the quality found in other manufacturers, I'll probably take a pass. Sadly, expensive repairs have become increasingly difficult to justify to my better half. But, I'll never get rid of my 86 R80 Airhead...
Did you ask them about TFT theft ? Heard its happening a lot, curious to know if they've made some changes to make it harder to take from the bike's dash.
@Porco Bianco it happened to a friend in London recently. i think there are anti-theft brackets now coming to the aftermarket, but no I didn't get chance to ask BMW about it.
@Porco Bianco A bike cover possibly. Yes boring, but... As most thefts are impulsive - 'not seen - not tempted'. Q - Will the theft of only the screen be covered on the insurance policy as TFT screens are a 'new' feature on bikes?
If they have not, they should make that screen so it can be lifted and taken with you as Alpine did with their tape and radio screens so very long ago, in the late 70's I believe, had one, thats the only way off hand i can see to stop it quick, Alpine stereo's are still equipped with that, others followed. Some had it so the whole stereo came out, the screen was better.
Why do they make the side stand foot so small, there are many aftermarket add on feet made to fit,so why don’t they just make them bigger when manufacturing
With all the technology from bmw. Im really surprised they haven't come up with The windscreen is the satnav as well!!!!! You'll still be able to see though as normal but it will highlight the map where you want to go. So you'll never need to take your eyes off the road I bet this is going to be the future. You heard it here first dan waller
Load the paniers and the missus and you can ride for weeks any weather . Feels light and nimble definitely a grand tourer. Our first choice when hiring.
Looks like an awesome machine, and great if you have the financial back up when the warranty runs out. If all you do is motorway bash great but wheres the fun.
No - that's certainly one advantage of the Goldwing and some Harleys. That said, the built in system is pretty good on the BMW as is the bluetooth connectivity on my Triumph, so I've been finding carplay less necessary recently.
It would be lovely to have a bike like that....for 5% of the time. Maybe if I can have several bikes when I win the lottery. I'd be interested to know if adaptive cruise control can cope with emergency braking situations. I don't like the idea. I hope that the economy gage isn't like my brothers old 5 series. It only ever came out of the red when coasting downhill!
You can see why older riders account for a lot of sales of touring bikes, because it makes total sense if you're retired and have time to put loads of miles in seeing the country. That's the dream for me!
When describing features, why not use vendor lingo? So if a viewer wants to learn more they have a proper term to search for and get good results. BMW Motorrad storage locking is called "Central Locking". Damn handy btw!
@@motobob according to the BMW website, it has, 10.25-inch colour TFT instrument cluster with connectivity and integrated map navigation. So presumably no need to use the map function from your phone? Not 100% sure though
@@ianowens7519 having had a test ride on one, there is no integrated maps, you need your phone and annoyingly if your phone locks the sat nav goes to arrows only. So currently you need to disable lock on your phone to allow navigation
Don't worry about the weight of the Goldwing. I'm only 5'6" and weigh just over 10 stone. I have no trouble with my DCT at all. Whatever you are doing with it it never feels particularly heavy. And BMW reliability isn't that great.
I truly hate how most motorcycle manufacturers no longer have mufflers on each side of the rear tire, which has kept me from buying another one because they look like something's missing. Oh sure there are after-market kits, but why spend the extra money ... Makes no sense.
Hi Sir from South Africa. How would you compare this to the k16 bagger? I know that the tech is better on the RT, but what about ride comfort, fun factor, etc....I am caught up between the 2, not sure which bike to go for....
Love the screen and hope they implement it to the next generation GS. However, now you need a cell phone connection to operate the Navi, so you will be using a lot of data from your data plan and you need to always have a cell connection. Having a separate NAV unit or a built in Gamin/TomTom software (say link the Goldwing) eliminates these issues.
That’s not quite true. The complete maps are loaded on your phone (usually downloaded at home, in the same way you’d update your dedicated nav unit). Your phone doesn’t need to draw down data while you’re navigating.
I ride a 2009 K1300GT and have looked at the 1250RT as my next bike. The K1600 is just too big. Thanks for the review. I just wish the damned thing wasn't so expensive.
I would bet they are stainless with tephlon inside and some type of long life plastic on the out side of the stainless brake lines, mine are. They will last a very long time, don't know about the wiring on that one., mine is well put together.
Don't you think that BMW have missed a trick with the new dash? Car displays have gone for the ability to configure the gauges as you want them, often using analogue style displays for speed and RPM, this new dash seems to be in the BMW "we know best" what you want to see format. Compare it to the digital display in a BMS 5 series.

No mention of the incredible new headlights?? Check out Long Way Home for review of these.
I currently ride a Tiger 1200 XRT and am considering this as its replacement. I cant wait to get to my local dealer to organise a test ride.
Wow.... That's simply beautiful! End it keeps also something classic into it....
Ow that the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT plus is here, which one would you keep if cost of purchase wasn’t a factor ????
Soon the software will have a upgrade for fake sound trough the speaker (like some cars). Maybe the sound of an old Ducati when you in the mood.
Great review! Thanks! But I think I will wait until the BMW K1600 comes out with the adaoptive cruise control and huge naviation display. That K1600 will have a reverse gear what is important to me.
It can only be a matter of time - looks a bit dated now compared to the RT.
BMW are adding the self-park and doors next year. I'd wait for the 2022 model.
Still the best motorcycle engine ever produced.
The flat 6 Honda Goldwing engine for me Stephen
@@SBKPete Both great!
That’s why I had a whole cylinder replaced on my 2019 1250, they have their issues🥲
@@IanTed It is a engine made by man. I have owned 8 BMW Boxers one with 128,000 miles and never opened. As a motorcycle dealer we sold many used ones through the years with no issues. If you check dealerships of all makes have service departments full on bikes.
I have to disagree. The inline 4 cylinder on my BMW K1200GT doesn't get as hot and vibrates MUCH less than the boxer engines.
@@rows10 I should have been more exact....seat height. I'm not tall @ 165cm.
@@ron_grimes good advice. Thanks 👍🏼
Fabulous intuitive review as always m8!
Great review! Really like the large TFT, brilliant!
Thanks Pete!
I own a K1600B GA and Ive heard people complaining about the lack of ACC. ID rather the phone compartment like the RT!
Just bought the 2020 R1250 RT, still learning it. My bike needs an adapter cable to charge the phone unfortunately. Just learned how to adjust the DSA suspension setting, having to get used to the seating ergonomics as it slides the rider forward also.
Hopefully they will put that tft dash on k1600 lineup. It's already outdated.
I'm surprised they haven't done it yet.
Very good and lovely commenting ! Good voice ! I owe a Goldwing SC 79 DCT and will test-ride the latest RT the day after tomorrow. Curious !!
Ultimate tourer.
I bought the same bike from an ex-BMW salesman in the South West
I wished I could afford this when I bought my Ducati Sports Tourer, except for the price!! This new model is lovely but I’ll have to wait for a used (or should I say pre-loved) one in 202*?
Yeah especially with the extras they'd fitted to the press bike, it adds up quickly!
Darn. That is one beautiful bike. Nice review. 👌🏼👌🏼
I had a 1978 RT and always wanted another…
I was going to buy one this year but they are not allowed to sell on US because of the front brake problem
Interesting - what's the problem with it? Was it a recall?
Looks very handsome, the bike too!
Yes - I love how the front section is so bulbous and out of proportion.
I believe you can switch it off, yes.
Those computer dashes scare me...especially once the warranty runs out. Besides that, the RT is a phenomenal bikes.
Yep designed to unplug and completely replace. That’s why it’s not actually integrated into the bike
I have a 1980 R100S. Almost no plastic. Coils. Points and condenser. It’s not a bus like new bikes are.
Love that bike I so want one great vid quality too.
Usual London they steal everything definitely not a friendly city from that perspective.. I got my r1200Gs stolen in front of my office...
@@ADCL369 That's terrible. Seen videos of these people stealing bikes in broad daylight. London has sadly become a knife ridden burglary hot spot.
How 'bout a rear-view camera ? 😃
Why do they make the side stand foot so small, there are many aftermarket add on feet made to fit,so why don’t they just make them bigger when manufacturing
With all the technology from bmw. Im really surprised they haven't come up with
The windscreen is the satnav as well!!!!!
You'll still be able to see though as normal but it will highlight the map where you want to go. So you'll never need to take your eyes off the road
I bet this is going to be the future. You heard it here first dan waller
if your phone doesnt have wireless charging, it has a usb plug in in the fairing pocket too
So It is great on the highway….will it hold up as a Grand Tourer with multiple 10 hour days?
Load the paniers and the missus and you can ride for weeks any weather . Feels light and nimble definitely a grand tourer. Our first choice when hiring.
Adaptive cruise control; is this when motorcycling jumped the shark?
I'd definitely recommend trying it out
Looks like an awesome machine, and great if you have the financial back up when the warranty runs out.
If all you do is motorway bash great but wheres the fun.
Does it have Apple Car Play on the TFT?
I need a DCT on the bike
manually toggling gear is annoying for commuting in the city ......
When describing features, why not use vendor lingo? So if a viewer wants to learn more they have a proper term to search for and get good results. BMW Motorrad storage locking is called "Central Locking". Damn handy btw!
can the panniers be removed?
Does it not have sat nav built in without having to use your phone?
I don't think so
@@motobob according to the BMW website, it has, 10.25-inch colour TFT instrument cluster with connectivity and integrated map navigation.
@@RobertSmith-ug4it pretty poor of BMW is that, you are paying enough for the bike so it should be there, in my opinion
The maps are downloaded to your phone so no data signal needed except for traffic. App just needs to be running to work. (Owner)
Damn nice bike but can the radar be turned off does anybody know just wondering
Excellent review. I am convinced that i have to buy this one instead of Honda Gold wing which is heavier.
Don't worry about the weight of the Goldwing. I'm only 5'6" and weigh just over 10 stone. I have no trouble with my DCT at all. Whatever you are doing with it it never feels particularly heavy. And BMW reliability isn't that great.
Thats a great bike, 👍
Nice review 👌
Thanks RL!
KTM 1290 Adventure has adaptive cruise control too...
Awesome machine and perfect vídeo!!!
I've not ridden the bagger but I'd just demo both and choose the one you like the most!
That bothers me a little bit. I would have preferred a native system.
That’s not quite true. The complete maps are loaded on your phone (usually downloaded at home, in the same way you’d update your dedicated nav unit). Your phone doesn’t need to draw down data while you’re navigating.
No data required or needed from your cellphone.
I am hearing a lot about people stealing the tft screens, has bmw done anything to prevent it on this bike?
Good looking bike tech amazing
Are all the UK bikes coming with Michelin PRs? Bike looks much more modern with new dash and fairing
I ride a 2009 K1300GT and have looked at the 1250RT as my next bike. The K1600 is just too big. Thanks for the review. I just wish the damned thing wasn't so expensive.
If i were to get a new BMW motorcycle, i think this is what i woukd end up wih.
Thought I recognised the M3. Plus you have the same Nexx helmet I do!
Excellent job!!
Are those rubber squeeze press brake lines ? And exposed electric wires for those lower lights ?
If so...hmmmm
I would bet they are stainless with tephlon inside and some type of long life plastic on the out side of the stainless brake lines, mine are. They will last a very long time, don't know about the wiring on that one., mine is well put together.
How much a used bike like this will cost after six month use and approximately and 20 thousands Kilometers milage on it.
Great review 😊👍
Thanks RZ!
Is the GPS navigation integrated into the bike, or is it dependent on GPS navigation from a cell phone?
hey Bob.....whilst it may be great for one up touring, what if your wife wants to come along??? And dont think you will get away with a basic top box rear seat... she will want a full back seat lke the K1600 GT LE has mate
