  • I bought this Duster from Dylan McCool without ever seeing it in person. He was kind enough to hold it for me for over 6 months - but now it's time to fire it up and drive it to the new shop in TN! Think it will make it?

About 20 years ago my wife and I were just married, dirt poor, and livin on love. I had a 74 duster with a 225 and a 4 speed. The 225 burned about as much oil as gas. I had just got done building a 75 and a 76 with a buddy. I had plenty of left over goodies from almost a year of junkyard pillaging. I was aching to put a 340 in it. I had one with a big ol thermoquad, a k frame, a set of subframe connectors, a set of headers that were actually right for the car...the whole nine yards. Mrs didnt want me to make our duster into a go go buggy that she couldnt drive. Anyway we had the road trip from hell. 5 flats, had to put diodes in the alternator, ignition box went out, you know...regular stuff. About 20 miles from the home 20 the lower rad hose exploded. I stopped, looked under the hood, saw the mess, shut the hood and drove on. It got so hot I locked it up. Three times. I fully intended to stick a piston so hard that Id break a rod. When it finally stuck so hard that it wouldnt break loose in overdrive, we were about a mile from her uncles house who really enjoyed his sudsy beverages. We got there, and he enjoyed about another case of suds and we rounded up a chain to drag it off the highway before dark. When we got to the car it had cooled off and for the fun of it, i hit the key and it fired right off. He carried me to town, I stopped at old Reilly's and got a hose, went back and put it on and filled it with water and drove it home.
We drove that car for another couple years until a drunk sideswiped it. I never smoked, never knocked, and just ran like a top.
Maybe you need to get it hot enough to lock up....never know.

We bought a Duster in 1978 in Kentucky which had 135,000 miles on the clock, thought it would be OK because we liked the seller, a no bullshit friendly man. He chucked in a bag of dope too and invited us to dinner.. We drove to San Francisco via New Orleans, put in a new clutch in Las Vegas and sold it for S300, not much less than we paid for it, and flew back to England. Great trip, camping out for 3 months. Many fine memories.

I believe the other Duster you picked up was also missing its kickdown linkage. Shouldn't be surprised when the transmission goes directly to 3rd without that vital setup in place and operating. I've always heard that driving without it will destroy a Torqueflite in short order, but at least one of your Dusters survived for at least a little while.

They sound like that because they're a gear reduction starter. Pretty stout unit but over-advanced ignition timing would destroy the gears every time. The housing that the battery cable attached to is phenolic and would break easily when tightening the cable nut. I replaced many of them BITD.

Hey Derrick, Thanks again to you and the family, for continuing to provide, awesome tips, and entertainment as you continue on, with what you do BEST! And here is a tip for those times when your bringing THUNDER and getting a Vehicle on the road and back home in the rain without working wipers. SKIP the RAIN-X and pull under a gas station pump shelter dry the windows down good with some of them free paper towelettes they usually provide with the windshield washer gadget tank a majigs, that they Zip tie to the support beams, and get yourself a small or regular size container of turtle wax or house brand wax, and rub it on the windsheild, side windahs and rear windah, but stay a few inches off the chrome window strips, and then wait for a good 5 mins, and then use some good Ol' elbow grease gunners you got there, to take off the wax and polish it to crystal clear shine and I swear, the rain will bounce and dance like Shirley Temple in a tap dance recital off all them windars and not a drop will stick to it, found this tip out one time on my second hand 70 Chevelle, when giving her a bath and a wax job. A big dallop flew off the rag and landed on the window so I wiped it up and polished it off the window so I decided to do the other side, Man oh Man I did not have to use my wipers for good 6 months, no lie, but did get a whole heck of a lot of honks from oncoming vehicles as their lights bounced off my windshield too like the rain and may have bright spotted them I guess, cause I did not have my high beams on as I would always check.. thinking that is why them maybe honking at me, LOL! Take Care and Keep a firm grasp of your vice grips and a steady hand on the wheel, while putting the life back in them older cars, trucks and occasional oddities you find in your vehicle hunts, and buying sight unseen adventures!!

My first car was a 1972 Plymouth Valiant Scamp. Same power plant as this Duster. Got it from my granddad and something was always wrong with it. never idled right consistently, ended up formulating a knock then a rod slung and cracked the block. I was told the slant six is a hard engine to blow, but when you do, it's done and that it was. loved and hated working on that car. Wish i'd learned on it more and never blew it up, but life goes on. was so bummed out. i used to help a highschool friend with his paper route, and a lady who had a 1970 base model with no rust sold it for only $200! and it ran just fine. this was the mid 90s.

Had a 73 Dart as my first car. Wish I still had it. Oil around spark plug is because there is an aluminum tubular insert in the head surrounding the spark plug with a rubber seal (like a square cut o-ring). Few people replace the seals, so they harden and leak. The end of the insert also gets extruded out by the spark plug, so it is best to use the round end of a ball peen hammer to dress the hole where the spark plug goes through back square or slightly concave when looking down on the tapered end so that the insert squishes the seal into the head when the spark plug is tightened.
