Thank you, Derek for giving me the procedure and the courage to resurrect my father-in-law's '71 Riviera. Today I got it to start for the first time in 25 years!
My grandpa's 1972 Buick Electra 225 currently runs but has been in a barn for 30+ years, 70k miles, interior is a literal time capsule. I've not been making time to go over and give it the small love it needs like wheel cylinders, brake masters, and ps pump. What impresses me so much is that you never curse while working on cars and engines, especially old ones. Anybody who knows what working on cars and engines is means a lot of cursewords when things go wrong (which they often do) like stripped screws, electrical shocks, the occasional insect sting, and the difficulty of trying to figure out how to solve problems that come up out of nowhere. The fact the you keep your cool and you never cuss is (to me) just as impressive as your mechanical knowledge and your awesome videos. Keep up the good work Derek!
I've often thought that too, he never seems to get frazzled, always calm and collected. Can think and work his way through anything. Really admire that. And very funny too!
The car definitely deserves to be restored and sold to a grateful new owner. I live in the UK and it is extremely unusual to see cars like this on the UK roads. The U.S. certainly knew how to make big gorgeous cars and great that Derek is rescuing them from oblivion. More power to you Derek.

@@deanstevenson7517 laws exist that do not allow him to drive vehicles in this kind of shape. Those laws are ignored. @@deanstevenson7517 extraordinary luck for sure! Mixed with a bit of knowledge of red flags the state trooper might be looking for. I told a friend yesterday to watch my new favorite tv show Roadworthy Rescues. He told me he'd been watching Derek for years on youtube. So glad to find your channel.

So refreshing, Awesome show, where can I get the shirt?
While I agree, I do understand the need to branch out. A guy can get burned out doing the same type of thing for years on end.... So while I've never been a big drag racing guy, and probably will skip some of that content, I understand why he wants to do it. Not every video is going to appeal to every subscriber... and I've seen it happen to a lot of youtubers over the years... where they feel they have to chase growth and end up getting burned out doing only the types of content that maximizes views... in the end everybody loses because the creator loses that original passion that got them the following in the first place. Long story short, I hope Derek just keeps doing what makes him happy and is content that he can't please all the people all the time.
The best entertainment å guy can have when life is a litle bit on the sad side. Thank you, Derek. You put å smile on my face yet again. Greatings from Norway

I’m in agreement with you that it would be a shame to chop up such a desirable classic for the drivetrain. I’d love to see you clean it up and make it run good to flip it to someone that will give her the love and attention she deserves! Love your videos so much! Puts my rotten mind in a good place. I gotta say Derek, your revivals are my favorite thing about this channel. I like watching the race stuff, and the shop tours, but the revivals are my favorite. Keep it up bud!
If it were me, I'd just make it safe to drive and enjoy, reassemble the interior best possible, clean it up a bit more, and auction it off back to the collector market, that one of a kind rear louvre set up is still desirable to the Buick collector enthusiast, put the money towards more rescues, maybe find a small block donor care with complete drivetrain to swap into the older Buick, cool show and look forwards to more episodes.... Thanks Derek !
Amazing how these old Detroit cars can run after sitting for 1/3 of a century! The thing that gets me is that someone parked it and pretty much gave up on the car, yet it was repaired in one day and driven 100 miles! Great job!
Figure he ain't got the money for tickets or anything else..looks like he's going to cost them more than they can make. I've had a cop stop me in a shit box and flat said what's going on..then said aw hell don't tell me just fricken go and keep going.

Just a testiment to how good the old Detroit iron really was. Hope you clean her up and don't butcher it. After that trip it deserves to stay together.
I remember one of these in the same color at my elementary school parking lot every day. I liked it then and I like it now. Thank you for making my Sunday afternoon a relaxing one. You can't get better entertainment than a VGG revival. I would say clean it up, fix the brakes and front wheel bearing, stick some good used tires on it and flip it. Love it. My dad gave me his 69 duce & a quarter. Drove it all through high school. New paint, put in a nice system. Blue with a white vinyl top. Went to the Army and left it parked at home and my dad hounded me about letting it waste away and pushed for selling it. Sold it for a little of nothing in 94. Had been sitting for 7 years.
રાજસ્થાની ગટ્ટાનુ શાક
his "for Pete's sake" sounds like a friendly replacement for real cursing
Really enjoyed watching this, and i am learning more then i knowed i could.
Oh, he's cursing. it's just with a Wisconsin/Minnesota accent.
The car definitely deserves to be restored and sold to a grateful new owner. I live in the UK and it is extremely unusual to see cars like this on the UK roads. The U.S. certainly knew how to make big gorgeous cars and great that Derek is rescuing them from oblivion. More power to you Derek.
Agreed
They don't fit on your narrow roads very well
The boattail was inspired by many British cars ifera. it's
do they make yall go through the bs they make us go through since the drive seat is on the wrong side of the car for the uk

found this guy 3 days ago im binge watching the episodes where he drives em home he makes me laugh so friggin hard im a well rounded mechanic been doing this for 20 years this guy makes me laugh so hard his attitude is like me but he throws the comedy into it like should be fine ....nope bad idea .....keep making videos i love the content
Yip, me too, have to question your laws in the US that let's this guy drive these POS vehicles on thr road with other humans. Anyway, it makes good watching.
@@deanstevenson7517 laws exist that do not allow him to drive vehicles in this kind of shape. Those laws are ignored. He basically takes a self assessment and of the equipment during all the drives he does to make sure the risk doesn’t exceed his ability to overcome whatever comes up. In my opinion he is a brilliant man

I told a friend yesterday to watch my new favorite tv show Roadworthy Rescues. He told me he'd been watching Derek for years on youtube. So glad to find your channel.
Power windows, power seat, snob-level horns and high power acceleration, in '71, that was Executive Class luxury.
My PoP is from Wisconsin and he and his brother both use the phrase " A guy could...." I've never heard anyone else use it. I always use it when I talk him, great memory, thanks for your show, your freakin hilarious. I love the fact that you dont give a step by step description like every other show. So refreshing, Awesome show, where can I get the shirt?
Nice car, nice V8 engine sound, I hope will be restored 👍
nothin more to say
My absolute favorite youtuber. Derek deserves every bit of recognition he gets for what he does. Thank you Derek keep going
I wonder if he’s been offered a Tv show on speed channel yet.
These rescue vids are my fave, don’t get me wrong the newer content rocks too thanks to a guy’s character but this stuff kills it.
Absolutely, the revivals is what brought us all here. That’s what will keep us here.
Me too
While I agree, I do understand the need to branch out.
Agree.
The best entertainment å guy can have when life is a litle bit on the sad side.
Thank you, Derek. You put å smile on my face yet again.

The ease at which this guy does the dodgiest things imaginable with no discernable stress is great entertainment lol.👍
>>>>>>>>>>> very entertaining
Living in MN teaches you to not stress on the rd most cars are rotten so bad from all the salt you get used to driving nightmares around lmfao
His calmness is top drawer
I have three degrees, and watching Derek work makes me question all of my life decisions. I wish I were joking.
My father in law was like that. His most spoken sentence was "aww it'll be alright". I'm high strung and he just blew my mind
Out of this whole vid what impressed me the most was those window motors still working and you being able to lower them on the fly just like that!
The look on Derek's face when it had brakes was glorious. Complete and genuine surprise. I love it.
Yeah and with the weight of those things : you just gotta pray those brakes are DEFINITELY WORKING ! Man that’s just a scary thing when they got rolling and the brakes are iffy .
The only channel on The UA-cams that needs a Double Like Button
Mortske Repair and Puddins’ Fab Shop could use that too!!
Or a Download button too
couldn't be more true.. broke down real quick in a country club then hit the dumpster lol!
Just sign in to another youtube account and click the thumbs up for the second time.
I 100 percent agree but don't forget junk yard digs they also need a double like button I've been watching them for awhile now amazing ass channel they have plus they give good advice on 4 barrel Holley carbs so its a win win feller.
I have a soft spot in my heart for the neglected ancient ones that still try to get you home without killing you. Give that oldie lots of love.
This one came near to killin' me...running down a 7% grade to a 4 way stop with no brakes and 53 years out of inspection...PERFECT!
Favorite car and mechanic, the trick with the windows amazed me, simple but genius… a lot of folks wouldn’t have even thought about doing that
I vote to keep her together, Derek. That trip earned her a save :)
Agreed. She's numbers matching and in overall not bad shape. She needs to stay as a complete package.
One of the best videos I have seen in a long time. This guy should have his own show.
I find it hilarious that I am so-so about big-budget show and movie releases... but completely lose my shyte when Derek BRINGS THE THUNDER!!!! Too much excitement........ perfect.
Uh-huh...me, too!
I hear you. I hope the big-budget outfits don't scoop a feller up and take him away from us.
This is my kinda dude. Had my share of sketchy automotive adventures over the years but to watch a guy make a whole channel out of it is just the best thing ever.
Late to the party here, but I sure am enjoying catching up with it
I’m in agreement with you that it would be a shame to chop up such a desirable classic for the drivetrain. I’d love to see you clean it up and make it run good to flip it to someone that will give her the love and attention she deserves! Love your videos so much! Puts my rotten mind in a good place. Thank you for what you do.
When dealing with old “parked cars,” a leaf blower will clean things right up! And can help remove stench from lack of airflow on the inside!
Im assuming an electric leaf blower but id rather smell two stroke then die from the penicillin in there ! 😂
@@dippinggainsreviews1955 i was thinking for the power barn compartment, for the interior i would use simple green / bleach mix with water and a pressure washer 😂😅clean it right out, including what’s left of the seats😂😂😂
Lithium battery leaf blower.
Lysol and Fabreeze in great quantities also helps.
He just uses the wind on the highway for a leaf blower, good enough!!
It seems like a shame to separate such a complete running classic. I vote for fix and flip to a good home.
Agreed
same!
Let the old girl live! She has a good heart and I don't see many around any more.
Agree. And we want to see the video of the fix :)
Yep ! That's my vote.
I understand exactly what he's saying about Buicks - my 1967 LeSabre 400 shares a lot of parts with the Riviera and it is so dependable and easy to live with. Buick knew what they were doing, for certain. I love this channel, it is extremely entertaining.
The real deal how an average Joe would get a classic home love this guy. No fancy tricks no camera crew no drama straight forward I purchased it let’s drive it home
Every once in a while I get the urge to pick up a project vehicle, then I watch one of your vids and I’m over it. 👍🏼

Joel from Montreal here. Thank you for this Buick rescue. (My dad had a grey, red velvet interior, 350 c.i. motor, 8 track cassette player😛, 4 doors 1974 LeSabre when i was a kid😍). Watching you video was a real therapie for me...while my #$%^wife was yealling after me for nothing... 😄
These Riv’s are beautiful. I’d love to see this one restored ..
Good to see an original style Vice Grip Garage video. You got to go back to your roots from time to time. I love what you do Brother Derrick, keep up the awesome work!

Great job!
I'm 68 and was a Half-Fast mechanic, doityerselfer on my classic 60s cars, and this really brings back the MAMMARIES!
Mechanical simplcity. That's some today's cars won't be able to do.
In 20 years, any of today's cars found in a barn won't be nearly as easy to get running. Too many sensors and finicky electronic components.
Derek has some real serious skill tho. More than most!
@@koolaid117 That's by design. Can't make money if people aren't buying new cars. Wont be seeing anything built in 2022 on the road in 2082.
I'm amazed you don't get hassled by cops on these road trips.
Think they only hassle the gays with expensive super sports cars… They are not envious of an old car that looks more like a wreck.
They wouldn't dare!
Figure he ain't got the money for tickets or anything else..looks like he's going to cost them more than they can make. I've had a cop stop me in a shit box and flat said what's going on..then said aw hell don't tell me just fricken go and keep going.
Eh, he's the right color. I suspect if Rich Rebuilds tried this he'd have a rather tougher time of it. (Especially if he had a blow-out right outside a country club full of WASPs in boat shoes...)

This has been the only youtube automotive channel which has motivated me to want to keep my rust bucket of a 1975 c10, and to get her running halfway decent. So for that, thank you Derek!
As a rare classic I think the Rivera needs some TLC so I can be preserved. That engine/trans/rear end combo is brilliant.
My favorite episodes are these revivals..top notch entertainment from VGG.
My buddy Hugh had several of the 71’s. His garage queen is a 30,000 mile sweetheart.
The "Fletch Lives" stop was awesome.
Definitely keep it whole, it's such a beauteous thing, it'd be a real shame to break one which is so close to being good for someone to fully restore it and keep it going another thirty years.
It would need a lot of work. Parts for his other vehicle is just easier and cheaper
“Better put the seatbelt on for some added safety” *puts buckle in shirt pocket*
That was hilarious !!!
I laughed my ass off at that.
We could do w/o your political sign-off! @Catholic Firefighter
@Catholic Firefighter No, your political sign off is the closest we have ever come to Fascism!!
@Catholic Firefighter I'm a Trump supporter too. But this is a car channel, not politics!!!
My husband and I love to watch your videos! You are so entertaining and we get to see cool old cars! It's so refreshing to see someone who knows what he is doing but doesn't act like he knows everything! Love to see how you are teaching your son how to work with his hands! So many young people today can't do anything for themselves. Please keep doing your videos and I'll be dipped we will enjoy them!
The driving in the Derek fast mode and the super riffs , passing the farms and pastures is magnifico and mesmerising , I want it to go on forever .
Just a testiment to how good the old Detroit iron really was. Hope you clean her up and don't butcher it. After that trip it deserves to stay together.
Absolutely 100%! She fought her way back and stayed together for ya!
Shine her up fix her mechanical keep her till you get top dollar to compensate you for the agony of that ride home
It would be a shame for a car that wants to live so badly to not get the chance with a motivated future owner.
I love this!! We have a 73' Buick Centurion 455 original owners. Runs amazing, like new! Can't ever stop the old buicks!!!!! Works of art!!!

There's plenty of suitable parts out there. Those are one of the most beautiful cars ever made. I personally love the cars from the late 60s to the middish 70s.
71 was a fine year for Detroit
Laughed freaking hard at "Gonna leave the jack there so the rescue team can pull my body out after it falls"
