I'm still driving my 2002 Silverado. Kept it in mint, perfect running condition for the last 15 years. Not so much as leak or residue anywhere. Never lets me down.
Last year of the 4th gen. That's the exact truck I want to get. They are great. My work has one and I love it. It's old reliable at work, she runs and runs while all our newer trucks are in the shop constantly.
Same here. It's been to the shop only twice in the 20+ years. Once to replace injectors and once to replace AC lines. I'm starting to think about replacing lines in the fuel system and maybe the PC3 pump. A fuel injector failure can also wreck injectors.
My ex step dad had a 04 Seirra 1500 5.3 with almost 300k on the clock before trading it in for a newer Ram 2500 for his new racecar trailer that was a little much for a 1500. He towed his old racecard trailer with that truck a lot on the interstate normally running around 70mph. Only problems with the Sierra were the common GMT800 stuff. 2 trans rebuilds, both front hubs around the 180k mile mark, the auto climate system had a mind of its own, and tie rods.
My first time seeing your channel and I'm blown away by how well you explain things as you're doing them. I'm 75 years old and remember the days when I used to work on my cars but didn't have the tools or lift or anything. There's great satisfaction in repairing your own vehicles! Your dad is very lucky to have you for a son! God bless. I subscribed to your channel and will look forward to seeing future videos.
yeah, and i'm sitting here thinking 'nice find' but if i did that and brought it to my mechanic for all the work he did on it right here i'd have another $3k into it easily depending on which bandit (oops, i mean mechanic) i would take it to. yes, it's great to be able to do your own work. i've got only 142k on my '06 1/2 ton 5.3 extended cab (bought used 7 years ago) and am hoping to get many more miles out of it yet up here in WI before it truns to a complete pile of rust. so far, it looks like my adding wheel opening fender flares and plastic rocker panels to it to cover rusted out ones just added $5k in value (lol) and make it look like a much newer truck. people seeing it for the first time since the minor cosmetic upgrade scratch their heads trying to figure out exactly what's different about the truck...lol. one thing is for sure...these are great trucks! couldn't afford a $70k truck on my best day ever...
I love that you don’t stretch out projects like this into 20 videos. You’re my favorite automotive channel by a mile! Please do an update on your Liebherr excavator. My 5 year old son is obsessed with it and won’t stop asking.

I was born in Maine but moved to Montana when I was 5. Went back to graduate high school in Maine and was dumbfounded by the amount of body shops. The roads always have a layer of snow on them out here after it snows, if that's any hint
I live in the Portland, Ore., area and I can assure you that the truck in the video is hardly unusual. I own seven vehicles, all but one from 2002 or earlier, and not one has any rust whatsoever. Even my 1960 International dump truck. If a vehicle here has any rust at all it has either spent time back East or on the Pacific Coast.
Beautiful truck. I have the 1500 version of a 2004 Silverado with the 5.3. Bought it from the original owner about two years ago. It’s about to hit 100k. California truck, no rust. It’s a great truck. I picked it up for about 12k. Much better than paying 50k for a new model.
Great trucks. I'm a Ford guy and even I have to tip my hat to that era GM trucks. Ford decided the triton engine was the way to compete🤦♂️ luckily they made good diesels.
I bought a black 03 1500 Z71 with 265k and a much nicer BOSS hood for $2000. Needed a bit of cleaning and TLC buts runs and look great. PO didn't know the market and made a quick deal but was really kicking himself when I later picked it up.
Caught ur channel by accident, and glad I did. Watching you work was a reminder of how common sense and an easy attitude gets the job done more often than not. And you seem like a pretty capable mechanic too…nice job
I have a 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500. I basically stopped driving it in 2017 because gas prices had gotten so high. It sat parked the majority of the time for seven years. It had 197,000 miles on it. Earlier this Spring, decided to quit neglecting it and get it back to 100%. Had to have transmission rebuilt, but I was able to replace alternator, battery and do the brakes (with help from someone with more knowledge than me). I got tires and got a good tune up. For the past three months, my daily driver and I am in love again. Granted, I just retired and mostly driving around town.
You may not believe this. My 08 Sierra has 320000miles. 4.8l , all original belt, plugs, rotors, trans, never changed trans fluid. Only front bearings changed. Still runs great. It will probably outlive me. Never changed brake fluid or coolant.also, it is always full of tools and lumber 21:39
Great job on this truck. The oil change and fluid levels check at the beginning of a 3000 mile drive gave this truck a chance to "blow everything out" of the engine. The complete fluids and filter service at home, plus other maintenance, is what people should do or have done when they buy a pre-owned vehicle. Of course, they need to have a pre-purchase inspection (PPI), but you seem to be able to fix anything :). You set a great example for people and their vehicles. THANK YOU!
As a first time viewer and retired auto tech, I really appreciate you and your channel. Your honesty, personality , thoroughness, knowledge and attitude toward maintenance and economical fixes are refreshing. One thing I would suggest, when checking ball joints, it is needed to "unload" the ball joints. Meaning, when the wheels are off the ground, most "long-arm short-arm" control arm setups fully extended and the suspension travel stops when the upper control arm compresses the rubber (I'll call) "top out" bumper(as opposed the "bottom out" rubber bumper. Otherwise, the torsion bar in, this case, is forcing the control arms into a "loaded" position. Your channellocks will not overcome the pressure of the torsion bar . Hope that makes sense. Please continue the great channel!!!!
@@RuijieZhou Virtually all auto parts stores (O'Reilly's, Auto Zone, Napa, etc} will take used engine oil for free. I suggest taking paper towels with you when you dump the old oil into their oil bin, it can get messy.
You're not kidding. A couple of minutes in, when you explain what is special about these trucks, you realize they're not too complicated. They hit that sweet spot of being modern enough but not so modern that they're complicated. I prefer driving my 2006 GMC. Then, I prefer my 2022 Acura MDX. Basically, the only time I like driving my Acura is when I'm with my family, and we're going out of town. I'd rather have my truck as a daily driver.
Doing maintenance right is the cheapest thing you can do to your vehicle. Your running description of what you're doing and why you are doing is spot on Good job!!!
For the coolant, on the left side of the radiator (from driver position) of these GMT800s there is a hose routed up and a drain petcock. You can pull the hose down and point it at your bucket, open the petcock, and drain your radiator no mess.
Love the GMT800s and 400s both! I have 2-2500hds: 1 with 8.1 and 1 with 6.0. Hoping to keep them going for a long time. Theyre so much more reliable than the new expensive junk.
These were considered new expensive junk back then aswell..lol I still drive my 2000 k2500 but I also have a 2021 duramax and it's been perfect @74k miles now
@@Liimpytbf I think a big complaint on newer vehicles is how hard they are to work on/maintain without expensive equipment. Or in some instances just impossible without speciality tools for a single use.

Those are FANTASTIC trucks! They are easy, and cheap, to fix, but rarely need fixing. Mine has 260,000 miles, and it runs like it's new. In my area, you can't go more than a half mile without seeing one of these 03, 04, or 05 silverados, in great shape, driving by.

I love all of your videos Waldo. These purchase videos are really cool. Seeing you go through them is a lot of fun. I think this will be a great truck for dad and I wish him many trouble free years with it.
Love when something like that manifold leak turns out to be next to nothing in repair. I'm impressed with your go thru process, fixing all the things that probably drove the previous owner to get out of it. I do the same and the results are very satisfying.
Just bought a 2007 Chevy Crew 2500 HD LBZ Duramax. Awesome so far after 3,000 miles. That is the trip of a lifetime! I paid a lot more at a retail dealer, but too nice to resist. Except for rust, those trucks are bulletproof. I had mine professionally treated with Fluid-Film and will do it annually - especially in salty rust belt.
You paid more because of the LBZ. I have one great motor just a few tips for you, lift pump will protect the the cp3 fuel pump and injectors and egr delete if you can.

Waldo, I really like how calm you are throughout the entire process. If I were doing something like this, I would have had the luck to break at least three of the four hub retaining bolts, needed a 1” pneumatic air hammer to remove the axel shaft nut, wedges to remove it off the spline, 10# hammer to remove the upper ball joint, snapped a spark plug or two and all of it would have needed torches to expand the rust. Other than that, thank you for showing me that there is a way to get help and that is by watching your videos. Thank you, 🤠👍

I owned an 06’ that was the same paint and interior. It was a wonderful truck and the only issue was the wheel bearings. It did start to get some lower body rust and with 224k I sold it locally for a very fair price. I happen to run into the owner at the lumberyard a year or so later and he was very happy with it.
I got an 06' bought it about 8 or 9 years ago , I've been through a couple of batteries, changed the oil and filters a few times, changed the brake pads once, other than that, nothing. I can go out, turn the key and it runs like brand new. Oh, 280K miles. Paid $5K cash for it.
I found mine on east TX for 6500 it was a grand pa truck 05 silverado 2500HD 4x4 (floor shifter) crew cab cloth seats he was selling it on Facebook and was advertised as a bad lifter noise and turns out it was in fact a manifold leak wich it was cheap to fix,i still can believe how lucky i was,i replaced the yellow headlights with OEM,and fix the saggy bumper with my pumpkack and truck looks like a brand new truck!

Here's a trick for a more relaxed cross country trip. Next time just skip the Mid/North East traffic/tolls and drive through N.D. thru MN/WI to Suite St. Maire MI, then through Canada Rt 7 to Montreal then drop through VT to NH. . Even though it will add about 80 miles to your trip, you'll save that money in less tolls and piece of mind.
Waldo is back!!! Hope you all did not have any flooding while back, in NC we had poor air quality due to the Canadian forest fires. Last week we had a heat wave, 94-96f everyday. Nice truck for your Dad. Being pulled over was not fun. Make more videos!!
Watch out for front door handles Inside, they are plastic behind inside panel and will break. I'm on my third one now! These are awesome trucks. Keep eye on oil pressure gauge. It can drop quick. To fix this ,you pull oil pan, drop the oil pump and put new washer on it before going back in. Those rubber washers go bad on oil pump. Motors on back windows is 186 .00 to replace. I have same kind truck and love this truck.
I've owned several of these trucks. They are gmt800 trucks. There are absolutely great trucks. I have got 300k plus out of every one with very little money put into them. I think they are the best trucks gm has ever produced. The duramax 5.3 and the 6.0 are all great engines. Its best to stick with the 2500 and 3500 versions.
Yup. Just all around a great quality truck that’ll do just about anything you need it to do, for as long as you need it to do it (assuming you keep clean-ish oil in it, & don’t let it overheat lol
There are a couple of coolant drain plugs on the block that are useful to get more of the old coolant out before the flush. You could also get some out of the heater hoses as well.
@@fakeascanbe423 it probably does - these are in addition to those. I was surprised how much coolant came out of my Dodge Ram 4.7 V8 when I removed the block plugs
When checking ball joints on a truck with torsion bars, you need to set the truck on the ground and use a floor jack under the control arm . Use a medium pry bar to check for movement. I have been a mechanic for 20 years and a shop owner for the last 10 years.I also specialize in suspension and alignments. You got a great deal on that truck. Congrats
Yes, I like this kind of content. The more, the better. I like your build videos as well; they’re all great! As others have noted, we appreciate the content you publish, and we’re anxious for as many as you can produce.
I was sent to this channel as I'm learning about new small trucks. OH MY GOD, you're channel is fantastic. Talk about clear and thorough work and explanation. I have the tools to do everything you just did to that truck, except I don't have a lift to make it easy. I just subscribed and hope to see you do more videos like this one. I'm looking for a truck and you showed me I can afford a used one in decent shape
Cateye chevy’s whether it’s gas or diesel are, in my opinion, the best (overall) trucks ever made. Like you said they’re modern enough to be reasonable comfortable, but they’re by no means like the brand new hunks of computerized plastic you buy for $70,000 today. Of course other trucks might have a better engine or better transmission or have better this/that. But when taking EVERYTHING into account, I can’t think of a better truck than the cateyes.
As an OBS ford guy I have to agree. I might give the OBS fords the nod in reliability/ease of maintenance, but the cat eye Chevrolets are very nice looking trucks. If I had the option of an OBS ford or a mid 2000s 2500hd single cab long bed, both in rust free and mechanically immaculate condition... I'd take the Chevy, I think.
Best teammate. I have the 2000 7.3 and a 2006 6.6. Both have a pretty easy maintenance but I'd give the edge to the 6.6 because the allison transmission has an external filter. Blows my mind how awesome it is.
Personally really like the ram 1500s from 98-about 01. Don't care for the early second generation as much as the late. They are a good mix of easy to work on and fairly modern fixtures.
Hi Waldo. Nice truck. They don't use salt on their roads in Washington state and I guess that is true for Oregon too. That wheel bearing just about fell off. I had to heat mine with a torch a good long time and use an air chisle to get it starting to come apart. I didn't even see any rust on the old bearing or the socket for it. Amazing. Nice tip on buying from an auction too. I don't know if I would ever do that but at least now I know how if that becomes a possibility. My truck has 363K on it so your dad should get many more miles before needing any serious work. Thanks for the video!
Yeah. Your plate doesn't match is a common pullover tactic. You can't prove them wrong for the illegal pullover and yet "Now the system works!" So your computer 10 minutes ago did not have proper information but conveniently it now does. Bologna.
I loved this episode. There’s something incredibly pleasing and satisfying about working on an older vehicle that is in nice condition underneath. No struggling with rusted bolts etc. Unfortunately that’s rare here in the UK as the first sign of colder weather and the salt gritter trucks are out! I now use something called Lanoguard, which is a natural underseal that uses the oils from sheep fleece. Much nicer to use than the traditional black underseal!
About a year ago I bought my dad's. 2001 step side Silverado. It runs great with 323,000 miles on it. It is my family hauler since it is a 6-seat truck. It has the seemingly rare 4.8 liter small block V8, and the transmission is still excellent as well as the engine. You can not go wrong with a well maintained. Early 2000 General Motors truck or suv.❤❤
Nice I got 4:10s also on my 2000 4Runner with 33 inch tires lifted 5 inches still gets 17 mpg average around the city 🌆 would get low 20s on the highway at 60 mph and it has 286k miles everything works like new ! No check engine light or nothing ! 3.4 v6 5vzfe!
You got a really good deal with that mileage ! My 2002 6.0l run better on AcDelco sparks plugs , I tried ngk once and truck ran different and mpg went down .
Always happy to see a new video from you! I'm never disappointed, your calm nature, excellent narration and skills are a real pleasure to watch. Thanks for another fine effort on your Dad's new vehicle. Be well, be safe!
Here in Michigan its virtually impossible to see a frame that beautiful unless the vehicle is new or at most 1-2yrs old. The road salt is incredible at making winter driving safer here and it works very well, but its nightmare fuel on vehicle frames and bodies. That truck would have holes in the frame or close to it, and the truck bed and bottom of the doors would without a doubt have holes by now. Even when you do your best to wash it off you cant escape it, basically vehicles do not last long here.
Excessive salt use Doesn't make anything safer. It makes drivers more complacent leading to risky behavior in inclement weather and is horrific for the environment.
Where are you in NH? I'm in Littleton area...oh, and MY 1993 Chevy 4x4 Silverado extenended cab... towing a 10 × 5 trailer with 2 800 lb motorcycles and a full bed...made it from Tacoma to Bretton Woods No Problem!
Great truck, I've got one with around 230,000 miles on it. Needs some TLC but it's still running strong. And no rust. Thanks for the tips and good content. Let's see that gooseneck video.
It appears that you put ATF into the transfer case, being an auto shift transfer case it requires GMs Auto-Trak II fluid (which is blue) Using ATF significantly lowers life and longevity.
Great content . I bought a 1997 Chevrolet k1500 4x4 with a rebuilt 5.7 a d just redid all the front end components. Still hv the front sway bar bushings and window locks on the extended cab part and tackle the rear brakes , leaf springs and change the gear oil . I bought it based on the rebuild that t was done.
A tip for dealing with a trans that doesn't have a drain plug. You can remove the front trans cooler inlet line and turn the truck on and pump out about a gallon and the pan will be mostly empty. Just don't let the inlet line start to form air bubbles, at that point you are starving the pump and can hurt it. You can also to a "Poor Mans" trans flush this way if you don't have a machine to do it, Just pump out a little less than a gallon at a time (pump a gallon, refill, restart truck let it run for 2 or 3 minutes then drain another gallon and so). Doing it this way I normally put 4-5 gallons through the system as when letting it pump for 2-3 minutes you get mixing of the old fluid and 5 gallon normally gets it cherry red.
This was probably the best video of its kind I have ever watched! Thanks for undertaking all the jobs that are so commonly required and explaining them by stage that builds confidence in the viewer.
Still a high price to pay for this used truck but your spot on comparing to a new truck. Love that your from the east coast where the vast majority of people live. Rust is real for most people and there are so many UA-camrs that are from dry climates which do not represent most of the American experience or like me in eastern Canada. Also, should get that truck rust proofed.
great video ! thanks for doing this. Changing fluids is fantastic. especially brake fluid which absorbs moisture. changing brake fluid prevents problems down the road with calipers.

Same with my 05. 👍🏼
2 trans rebuilds, both front hubs around the 180k mile mark, the auto climate system had a mind of its own, and tie rods.

yeah, and i'm sitting here thinking 'nice find' but if i did that and brought it to my mechanic for all the work he did on it right here i'd have another $3k into it easily depending on which bandit (oops, i mean mechanic) i would take it to. yes, it's great to be able to do your own work. i've got only 142k on my '06 1/2 ton 5.3 extended cab (bought used 7 years ago) and am hoping to get many more miles out of it yet up here in WI before it truns to a complete pile of rust. so far, it looks like my adding wheel opening fender flares and plastic rocker panels to it to cover rusted out ones just added $5k in value (lol) and make it look like a much newer truck. people seeing it for the first time since the minor cosmetic upgrade scratch their heads trying to figure out exactly what's different about the truck...lol. one thing is for sure...these are great trucks! couldn't afford a $70k truck on my best day ever...
Ditto everything you said, first time watcher, too.

I love that you don’t stretch out projects like this into 20 videos. You’re my favorite automotive channel by a mile!
Please do an update on your Liebherr excavator. My 5 year old son is obsessed with it and won’t stop asking.
While in certain instances, multiple videos have their place, I agree about not stretching things out for this type of work.
Just to add my voice to the chorus of cheers. I appreciate the editing, you cut out the repetitive, and focused on the important stuff. New subscriber!
Love this video just wondering if you could do a price breakdown?

Its pretty fun to see a time lapse of 84. Much nicer than driving it.
As a fellow New Englander myself, it's nothing short of astounding to see one of these mid 2000s Silverados in such immaculate, rust-free condition.
I am also a New Englander and thought the same thing! my 2015 Fiesta ST has rust on every damn door, hood and hatch at the edges. poop
I have a 2002 1500 LS just turned over 212.000 miles. purrs like a kitten 4.8
Yeah those are great trucks with 5.3 before they started the cylinder deactivation garbage.
2010 Sierra. These trucks mechanical parts are indestructible but the bed and frame will rust out horribly if not taken care of
You may not believe this.
You’re a great son! Nice reliable truck for your Dad. Thank you for making it easy Tom understand to repair/maintenance process.
The lack of rust on the vehicle will make the bolts feel less tight than they were 👍🏻🏴
Good point 😂

You're not kidding. A couple of minutes in, when you explain what is special about these trucks, you realize they're not too complicated. They hit that sweet spot of being modern enough but not so modern that they're complicated. I prefer driving my 2006 GMC. Then, I prefer my 2022 Acura MDX. Basically, the only time I like driving my Acura is when I'm with my family, and we're going out of town. I'd rather have my truck as a daily driver.

Doing maintenance right is the cheapest thing you can do to your vehicle.
Your running description of what you're doing and why you are doing is spot on
Good job!!!
For the coolant, on the left side of the radiator (from driver position) of these GMT800s there is a hose routed up and a drain petcock. You can pull the hose down and point it at your bucket, open the petcock, and drain your radiator no mess.
Don't you mean right side? Or drivers side?

@@eaglewarrior8707
@@eaglewarrior8707 No, left side from the driver position. Drivers side in the US.

Just bought a 2007 Chevy Crew 2500 HD LBZ Duramax. Awesome so far after 3,000 miles. That is the trip of a lifetime! I paid a lot more at a retail dealer, but too nice to resist.

I replaced my front wheel bearings earlier this year and it took 4 of us on a breaker bar to loosen the caliper bolts a lift sure would have been nice
I did with Cordless impact wrench and on the ground also. It took some 5 min to open it.
@@bad_covfefe Both phenomenal trucks in their own ways👍
Best teammate. I have the 2000 7.3 and a 2006 6.6. Both have a pretty easy maintenance but I'd give the edge to the 6.6 because the allison transmission has an external filter. Blows my mind how awesome it is.
@Lucas-fi4xy begone with your Muhammed the false-prophet.
Majority of Wa state uses liquid de-icer, worst thing to have. Drive-through car wash more often during winter.
Living in western WA I’ve seen parking lots salted and some roads especially with this past winter but nothing compared to the rust belt
Heres the deal, the plate was fine. They can make up anything they want to pull u over.
Yeah. Your plate doesn't match is a common pullover tactic. You can't prove them wrong for the illegal pullover and yet "Now the system works!" So your computer 10 minutes ago did not have proper information but conveniently it now does. Bologna.
Transfer case blew at 130k miles. Front diff blew at 88 k miles on my 2003. Orig owner too
Thank you, Waldo for the info regarding the auction broker. Thank you again.
I'm doing my trucks now in preparation for winter, although we don't use salt, a nice pressure washing and a coat of Amsoil MP
Thats good stuff, I use it on the plow at work. Called Fluid Film in the US for anyone looking.

Great Video Waldo, we love road trips. That's a great truck for your Dad.

Man that’s an amazing truck you picked up ! I’m glad to see someone do a gas 3/4 ton ! Excellent video !
This was a great video! You really put in a lot of relevant content very compactly and efficiently. I have a 2003 GMC C1500 Sierra, so yours was a close enough cousin. Your dad is lucky to get such a creampuff of a truck, and so properly serviced, as well. I used to buy new trucks frequently for my job, back when they were reasonable, and I drove a lot. Things have changed a lot in the past few years.
Yay!!! Waldo is back!!
What a great find. Easy fixes and no rust.
I've changed a rear wheel bearing on an 04 Tahoe when I lived in NH. That things was so seized, pounded on it for hours. Watching you work on essentially the same vehicle that has zero rust is amazing :D
Your procedure for a new to you vehicle is the same one I was taught to do from a teenager. It's amazing what you will find sometimes with just a simple once over.
Great video Waldo. Never being a mechanic it was interesting watching you check system by system. Top notch video keep up the good work!!
