- Today we review Great Value, Armour, Libby's and Hormel Corned Beef Hash. All four cans of corned beef hash are tested plain, with ketchup and with eggs. Sharing :)
#ikuraprime
Sodium Breakdown:
GV 970 for 1 cup, servings per can 1, per container 1630
Libbys 1400 for 1 cup, servings per can 1, per container 2350
Armour 980 for 1 cup, servings per can about 2, can 1960? (full can not listed)
Hormel 970 for 1 cup, servings per can about 2, can 1940? (full can not listed)
I'm part Filipino, and how I'm used to eating it with rice or garlic onion fried rice topped with a fried egg. Mix it all together. So good!! Typical filipino style breakfast. Haha
That sounds yummy!
Oh so yummy! I love garlic rice, and corn beef sounds good with it.
I only tried Hormel and great value... I like great value! Less salty and you can taste the potatoes better
Just came back from the store with Great Value! :)
99% of the time i pick great value over name brand a lot on many different items they are doing a good job .
Corn beef hash needs to be fried, not baked! Frying if done properly, produces a fine crust on each side of the corned beef hash!
I agree! But I didn't have 4 identical burners for 4 identical skillets for cooking all 4 at the same time so all 4 could be ideally cooked the same! I never cook it that way normally D'Ohhh!!! :)
I’ll go With hormel based on this review. I actually WANT my corn beef hash to taste like corn beef. Lol
Yeah, I hear you. I was torn. But not sure the stronger flavor meant more pleasant? Still, choice is good :)
Mary Kitchen is always my favorite...esp. their Roast Beef Hash 😋
I have yet to try the Roast Beef Hash. Maybe this coming weekend :)
As food prices go up, this stuff is a good idea.
Get a little extra for next year too.
Good idea! I'm feakin' out at the register I tell ya!
Great video but the Smithsonian called asking if they can have that blender 🤣🤣🤣
We had that exact blender when I was growing up lol
They can't have it back! :)
I noticed the blender! I have one in my kitchen right now! It is simple and still works!
@@xetaprime ikr 👊
@@helenfruitticher2444 Same here 👍
Thanks for the fun comparison! Hormel Mary Kitchen will.always be my favorite Corned Beef Hash. Next, you'll have to compare the various brands of Roast Beef Hash. I can vouch for Hormel's being mighty tasty -- a real taste treat!
I've never tried the roast beef hash. Does it come with potatoes?
@@xetaprime Yes it does! It looks just like Corned Beef Hash except it's color is a bit browner, whereas Corned Beef Hash is more pinkish.
You should try the hormel sausage hash!
@@bk972 Really? I've never heard of that one but it sounds delish! Thanks for the tip!
@@bk972, they have sausage hash?!?!?! I need some now!
THAT was one of the most coolest and in-depth reviews I've ever seen. It's so important that companies don't screw with their product via sodium. Btw, y'all make some mean eggs. Thanx.
Thank you! Far far too many eggs :)
@@xetaprime Hey, I meant to ask this, strange as it might sound. I'm a food product label reader. If there's a couple products that I both like equally, things like sodium content and fat content are very important. Corned beef hash (with the egg!) is kinda a once in a time comfort food. I love using my Mother's old recipe with everything diced small and lots of carmelized onions. But I too enjoyed the Great Value. Plus, it's way cheaper than Libbys or Mary Kitchen. I noticed that, despite this, Great Values fat content was like half of it's competitors; which I found amazing, cause old guys like me know that those rare times for comfort foods know that those types of foods can block an artery in a sec. One can eat a whole 32 ounce Great Value Corned Beef Hash and not exceed an adult's suggested daily fat intake! Seriously, I hope to find some more food tests/experiments with u and your group. Everything from lasagnas to fish fillets. Thanks again and excuse the length of this reply.
I came here after trying to get different reviews in corn beef since they gone up in price all over.
The prices are crazy! Libby's is cheaper by a few cents than Great Value! So I buy Libby's now :)
Good video but confused why you went all that way to clean off the fork to stir each brand while baking, only to drown out the hash with ketchup while tasting 🤔
Now you tell me! :)
Libbys is my all time favorite
Two years later...Hormel is still $2.36/can (Amazon).
I know as I just bought a 12 pack lol
It's $3.64 at Walmart now! 🥲
If you read the labels Libby’s is the only one that has corned beef as their first ingredient.
Yeppers :)
I enjoy Franks Redhot on my hash.
That's something I haven't tried but will now. Thanks for the suggestion!
Loved the video but I’m not sure the comment about the sodium content in Libby’s was correct. GV, Armour, and Hormel show the nutritional values for TWO servings per can BUT Libby’s shows the nutritional values for ONE serving per can. The Libby’s sodium is 1400 mg for the whole can and the other three brands have approximately 950 mg for a half can. Therefore, a whole can of GV, Armour, or Hormel contains about 1900 mg of sodium! Soooo……Libby’s at 700 mg sodium for a half can and 1400 mg for a whole can makes it the lowest in sodium, not the highest. Don’t avoid Libby’s out of fear of sodium & read those label closely! 😊
Okay, it can be a little confusing. GV also lists serving size as 1 can. While Armour and Hormel list 2 servings per can. They all list sodium per cup which is what I read off. So it's worse either way as no one just eats one cup of hash. Here's the break down.
@@xetaprime Thanks for the quick response! It is definitely confusing. Here’s some more food for thought (no pun intended). Note that I am reading info from cans distributed in North Carolina.
Libby’s Serving Size is 425 grams, sodium 1400 per serving, and servings per container is 1 (no info for 1 cup, no info per container).
Hormel Serving Size is 236 grams, sodium 970 per serving, and servings per container is 2 (no info for 1 cup, no info per container)
Armour Serving Size is 1 cup, sodium is 980 per serving, and servings per container is 2 (no info for serving in grams, no info per container)
Great Value Serving Size is 396 grams, servings per container is 1, sodium per cup is 970, sodium per container is 1630)
Also, Hormel, Armor, and GV are sold in 14 oz cans and Libby’s is sold in a 15 oz can.
Soooo, unless I’m mistaken (and that’s a definite possibility!) the grams of sodium per can is Libby’s 1400g, Hormel 1940g, Armour 1960g, and Great Value 1630g. Isn’t that right, at least based on the info from the cans here in NC?
I’ve given up trying to make parties, go’es in the skillet on the stove. Price has almost doubled. I would like it to crisp when frying sometimes I add a pinch of flour.
Huh. Never thought of adding a pinch of flour. I'll try it. And maybe also with cornstarch. Cool.
Of these four, Libby's is my favorite! But if you can find Hereford brand - that is the best I've ever had!
Never heard of Hereford. Ooh just googled and I'm getting hungry!
Armour is the best
Can't buy canned corned beef hash in the UK. Have to make your own. Would have been nice to show all the ingredients, like fat, total calories, etc.
Really? No hash in the UK? Yeah, my bad :(
Wow, you know your Corning Ware real good! So Great Value is the winner!
I’m a fellow CBH enjoyer and I have done this exact taste test b4. Let me give you my rankings… 4. Armor, 3. Libby’s, 2. Great Value, 1 Mary Kictchen
Armour. Interesting. I haven't bought it in a while. Not opposed to trying again :)
@@xetaprime o please don’t it’s terrible
@@jasonalexanian1552 I read your comment backwards! D'Ohhh!!! :)
@@xetaprime ok it’s CBH and rbh
Which one is better
Doesn't corned beef have a pink tint? What's wrong with a salmon-colored label? I mean, I wouldn't buy a can of green beans with a purple label. Got to be consistent with the product inside.
It does match the color :)
No salt and black pepper on those eggs? Disgraceful!😲
Ha! :)
Who adds salt to salty foods????? Oh prolly someone who has high blood pressure and then says “iTs gEnETic” 🤣🤣🤣
@@ELBarbarro , yeah, like those silly people who add sugar to cake frosting! Isn't there already enough sugar in the cake? Just frost your cakes and cupcakes with butter and Crisco, and be done with it.😳
Great testing! Subscribed.
Thanks for the sub! :)
H-E-B brand is pretty good and the label is decently appealing
Cool. I'm hearing about all these other corned beef hash brands I'll have to try.
I know it’s hard to find, but try Palm Corned Beef Hash. BETTER than homemade!
Thanks, I'll look it up... ooh a product of New Zealand...
I like ALL of my hash(s) fried 'till it's crispy. Ya hafta fry the HECK outta Armour 😅
Heres 1 more test idea. Take a little bit of all 4 CBH, mix them together and then try it plain, with the ketchup and with the egg.
I don't think you could go wrong with that LOL :)
I eat Great Value all the time.
Same, decent for the price. Have to basically be wealthy to buy the Hormel/Mary Kitchen stuff lol…
I have the great value or libbys ….the other two are always expensive
Price really does factor in I tell ya!
I’m surprised you didn’t pan sear them.
It seemed the fairest way to cook and compare them. My stove only has 3 small burners and I didn't have 4 'proper' identical fry pans. This way I could cook all at the same time, same method, same pan. But I hear you, pan seared is the way to go.
The ingredients for Libby is the only one with corned beef. The rest just list beef. The brine to corn the beef is the extra salt
I have every brand you show in my pantry 😅I like to fry it, usually has enough grease, don't need oil,my favorite is admin the ketchup!!!
Years ago a friend of mine added ketchup to her hash. I'd never done it before that. Have never stopped! :)
I thought you were doing plain ! HOW can you even taste test something when you drown it with another condiment !? And besides everyone likes different things so these taste testings are a mute point.
I do do plain later on. Don't I? D'Ohhh!!!
Dammit, I have such trouble finding Libby's on store shelves. Hormel, Hormel, Hormel everywhere!
:(
I add bacon, an egg, shredded cheese, and hot sauce, Puritan brand
Why in the world would u put ketchup on hash
Started a long time ago and still love it! Especially cold ketchup :)
I've only had Hormel and Libby's.
My pick Hormel pan fried of course. Good review. 👍
Thanks :)
I was watching an episode of FoodNetworks the Kitchen today and can corn beef was a segment of discussion.
Enjoy your evening.
Much better if you brown it in a cast iron frying pan.
I completely agree. This was just a way to cook/eat them all at the same time.
I miss the old days when Libby also made sausage hash which I loooved!
I didn't know they made sausage hash.
@@xetaprime yes, sausage, ham, and c.b. hash.
They still make sausage hash. My local Meijer has it. Not Libby brand, Mary’s brand
I didn't know they made it either till I got a can at a food pantry this week! Can't wait to try it
Have you ever cooked corned beef hash in a stainless steel skillet (Revere ware or Farberware)?
The couple times that I have, it stuck pretty bad...
I haven't but that is a great idea! If I post a video I'll credit you Mike :)
Have to use butter, I like to sauté chopped onion then minced garlic before I toss in the hash, that usually keeps it from sticking
Hormel and libbys would be my top choices… and of course you have to doctor them up.😇
$1.74? It’s $2.96 now!
UGH! The prices everywhere are insane!
@@xetaprimeyeah and this was just 2 years ago!
I work at Hannaford and our brand is the best it crisp up fast armor is horrible mushy gummy blandish and straight fat(food lion is also hannaford)
Great to know! Someday soon I will try a can of Hannaford corned beef hash!
@xetaprime it's super good also cook it drop a egg in the middle of it and make sure there's some runny yoke it's so tasty, lol I'm eating a can right now 😋
Good thing I only bought one can of the armour corn beef hash 🤣🤣🤣
:)
You should try corned beef hash and grits! So good!
I've never had cb & g but will try it! Thanks for the suggestion :)
No pepper on eggs is a crime!
Did I really? D'Ohhh!!!
Hormel and the cheap shit is my favorite. I don't like the armour. It's disgusting. Libbys is decent too.
Hormel Roast Beef hash!
Look at your test in my channel your link is in the description.
Very Good!... #90 🐄🦉🏴☠✝{5-5-2022}
:)
I put mines on bread with hotsauce mayo and a fried egg
Sounds yummy!
GAG RAW EGG
Yum! :)
Nicely cooked eggs.
Thanks :)
I have to go with the Hormel and I have to go it alone since no one else in my family eats the stuff, they all turn their noses up at it.....traitors!
traitors! LOL :)
How may I request to get my time back wasted watching your video?
D'Ohhh!!! :)
L
Do you mean Libbys? It's now cheaper than GV!
A
:)
This test should not have been done with Ketchup. You should have tasted them all plain. Disappointing. Not a good review.
If you watch further in, I say the same thing. I then taste them plain and then with eggs. But you are right, I should have tasted plain first.
@@xetaprime I noticed when you put an egg on top, that too got confusing as reviews changed. You are correct - should have just tasted it plain, and not added the ketchup, nor the egg.
@@jeannine. No, I said I should have tasted it plain first. And because I eat hash with eggs and ketchup I also want to know how that tastes :)
@@xetaprime All in all, I do appreciate your efforts. Isn't always easy to do a youtube video. Thanks!
Stay away from kroeger brand hash...to salty!
No Kroger near me but good to know!
My diet includes about 1 oz of salt per year from my salt shaker. A year ago I experimented. I wanted to know why everyone salted everything and is it better. My annual exam with my cardiologist told me my blood pressure had gone way up. I had quit the experiment and the next test I had was normal again.
My Father had high blood pressure. He love to drink V8 juice which is insanely high in sodium but he refused to drink the low sodium version :0 He wanted the original. I haven't thought of that in a while.
Wow sounds like another whiner right for the start
Thanks! :)
Why the oven? Seems like a crime.
I know! I just wanted all things equal. But I agree, maybe should have fried them oh well :)
Good lord, you’re making me want corned beef hash. Effective score, too!
And I'm corned beef hash burned out I tell ya! ...for a little while anyway :) The music is called Wolf Moon by Unicorn Heads. It's copyright free and on youtube.
This is a video that will get likes and praise for a long time! Thank you for sharing your take on these different brands! I enjoyed watching you go through all the testing and figuring out that the cheapest is the best! And probably the best for you! the wife and I had a can of Hormel this morning (Sat before T-Giving) with eggs and a bagel. We are full until later this afternoon. Very hearty breakfast that will keep you going through the day! Thanks buddy!
Thank you for your wonderful comment! I'm having hash for Breakfast tomorrow! Happy T-Giving :)
Might be worth pointing out that Libby's is the only one that lists actual "corned beef" as an ingredient
Libby's is the only one that lists actual "corned beef" as an ingredient 😀
I have been on a hash kick here lately been buying it by the case (15) had a can for breakfast & me & my daughter had 2 cans for diner always with a couple fried eggs but I must say there is none better in my book than hormels & armor is my least favorite of all.. anywho just my option but no matter which brand ya go with always fry it crispy( with butter) & top it with a fried egg or 2….I have a can every morning for breakfast …god bless America…🤙🏻🇺🇸
Agree with the frying crispy. Baking these was just a way to review all the same way. I divide mine in two, one side eggs one side ketchup :)
What a great video, so close to my heart, although I'll leave the breakfast ketchup to my Dad :) I appreciate it, but I'm all eggs. Thank yo so much Ikura.
Eaten corned beef hash from a can all my life. My Mom taught me to dump it into a hot skillet, cook it down a bit, and then add butter and broken eggs. You mix that together aggressively until the eggs cooked and are almost visually imperceptible in the hash. I modified her recipe so that I still have some runniness to the eggs, but I always mix 'em right into the hash. I grew up in Philly, have no idea what brand of hash I was using back then, but today I'm Great Value all the way. My only caveat is that you *must* crisp it a bit before the eggs. When I was younger, whatever brand that was in the can, it didn't need it that much. GV does, in my opinion.
Thanks again!
You're welcome :) I've never tried mixing the eggs right in. Sounds yummy! Will try making it that way this weekend!
They stopped making cuttable bases because the were prone to rust and the cans fell over when stacked. Now the round bottom sits inside the top of another can.
Agreed! They do stack well now :)
I just checked Great Value corned beef hash at Walmart in Douglas, GA and it is $2.96 not $1.74
I KNOW! UGH! :(
Anyone that would put ketchup on corned beef hash should never be allowed to have hash again and banned to the doghouse.
Ha! I still remember the day my friend made us corned beef hash for breakfast. She proceeded to pour ketchup on it. I was shocked, but tried it out of curiosity. Since then I divide my plate in two. One side eggs and hash, one side hash and ketchup. D'Ohhh!!! :)
Who makes GV? Do they buy and label from another company?
I wonder. I can'r find any info. Would love to know.
Better in cast iron, While waiting for pan to heat put open can on skilet, heats the fat and slides out 👍
I've never warmed a can like that. Thanks for the tip!!! :)
I've never heard of Great Value - not on the West Coast of what I'm aware. Libby's to me is the best, salt or not. Potatoes and meat are less mushy and more crispy. I like to add sautéed chopped onions and Italian Seasoning with slices of chees, grape jelly and eggs on top.
Grape jelly and eggs on top!!!! Now that sounds interesting! What kind of cheese?
@@xetaprime I prefer Tillamook Extra Sharp Cheddar. Very tangy!
I swear great value is really relabeled hormel
Agreed!
i soo love libby, it hard to come by that hash so i now used heb hash or i guess great value hash
I haven't tried heb corned beef hash. But I will now :)
@@xetaprime it taste nice but libby way better. better then hormel hash
Just had the GV with some texas petes.Cooked it up in my cast iron skillet and am in heaven!!I never worried about what the can label looked like on any food i eat dude really.
ooh I've never had it with hot sauce and, never heard of Texas Petes, but I may try it now! Thanks! :)
Hormel/Mary Kitchen is the best of all the canned corned beef hash brands, but very pricey… Great Value/Walmart tastes great and is affordable, Win Win… Armour is the worst in my opinion as well. Had no idea Libby’s was packed with so much Sodium, yikes.
Ketchup, really?
Really! You wouldn't think so but yeah. If you've never tried it you might be surprised :)
Ketchup???
Have you never put ketchup on hash? A long time ago, in a galaxy... a friend turned me on to it. Now it's eggs and hash on one side and and ketchup on the other :)
I'm a Hormel guy. I re-discovered corned beef hash a few months ago and went looking for Hormel. It took me awhile to find it because it had that "Mary's Kitchen" on the label so I didn't recognize it. But with the cost of things these days I'm going to give the Walmart Great Value brand a try. Thanks for the video!
Last week my neighborhood Walmart was all out of corned beef hash! People are stocking up!
Yeah Hormel corned beef hash is pricey!!
In my opinion,Hormel is hands down, unequivocally the best by far!
The color of it,the smell,the taste etc…
I hate the grey color and cat food smell of all others. Hormel is the only one that’s delicious to us. It makes no logical sense to sacrifice taste and smell for .50-$2 difference in price. That’s just us though! I promise if you’ve not had Hormel due to price you’re making a huge mistake! It’s completely worth it!
BTW try it with a slice of Deli sliced American cheese, please no ketchup!
Hormel with a slice of deli yellow american is all that’s needed!
I don't think I have had it with just American cheese. I will try that, sounds yummy and with Great Value :)
For survival Armour is best because it has oil so you can use to cook other things with.
That's probably why I didn't like it and I usually fry the piss out of mine, I eat it with a little ketchup and some Tabasco and it just felt way too oily
these americans love canned food hehe
@@xetaprime I've already eaten a lot of canned feijoada here, traditional Brazilian food
Bullshit Libbys is the best everyone whos anyone knows that
:)
Did I just watch you eat four cash of hash at once!
Ha! If I remember correctly I did have leftovers so... heh heh
Great video, I just made Hormel corned beef hash and it was not salty at all. I had to sprinkle a lot of salt on it to make the taste come out.
This shit is funny af.
:)
You can use an old fashioned punch can opener to punch as hole in the bottom of the can to relieve the suction. 😀
Iv done a couple videos comparing chef boyardee vs great value. The videos haven’t came out yet.. well 1 has.. but I’m amazed at how well they hold up
I'll check them out :)
I ❤ corned beef hash. Where I live I always have either Libby's or Hormel brand for breakfast.🍳 Atleast I wasn't the only one who realized the Libby's brand had alot of
sodium/salt. Great video btw.😁👌
Thanks! yeah, I love the extra sodium but I'm afraid my older body doesn't :)
If you look at the ingredients of all of them, the only one that contains corned beef is Libby's. The rest contain "beef" (not corned beef)...
I didn't catch that. Interesting? :0
They now make a Mary’s kitchen reduced sodium corned beef hash. I haven’t tried it yet though.
Good to know! We'll probably end up adding salt to it then :)
Yeah I could use less salt 🧂
I like to sauté chopped onion then minced garlic in butter before the hash
Sounds yummy! :)
It's a salty dilemma for sure!!! Or should we say sodium chloride?
Ha! :)
