A lot of what you guys say is just a direct result of not fully understanding the music as it was at that specific time. Not a knock on you, but its really one of those "you had to be there" kind of things. I personally like both versions.

You need to check out some of Megadeth's mid/late period stuff. With Metallica you've done St. Anger and Spit Out the Bone, but all your Megadeth reactions are their early albums. Megadeth grew into a deeper and more versatile band. Check out one of these: ""Washington is Next", "Trust", "The Threat Is Real", "Breadline", "Dance In The Rain", or "Blackmail the Universe".

I was there. Not 1984, but early enough, at 1987. Even then, Mechanix was blatantly weak in comparison to Four Horseman. I thought it actually did a DISSERVICE to Dave Mustaine because since Four Horsemen was released earlier, most people hearing Mechanix for the first time, were already familiar with Four Horsemen. And Four Horsemen is obviously more polished. So why would one (Dave) put a song out that was clearly inferior to the Other version? Bad move on Dave's part. Do it better or don't do it at all.

“The Mechanix” was always the name of the song wherever Mustaine went. It wasn’t “Four Horsemen” when Mustaine was still in Metallica. When Mustaine started Megadeth, he was angry and spiteful. He wanted to be faster and more metal than Metallica, and made Mechanix quicker and heavier to outshine Metallica’s. I actually know Chris Poland well, and he’ll giggle saying that the Megadeth version was just a little too fast.
Fun fact: Mustaine was a fan of the out-of-phase pickup sound in the first two albums, which is why his guitar tone sounds so “clucky”.

    • @insufferablethrashelitist9305
      @insufferablethrashelitist9305 2 роки тому +3

That's really cool you know Chris. Back in the 90's I was friends with a now very prominent metal rockstar, initials CT. Taught me how to play power chords and palm mute.
Is that the bc rich dave played that had the out of phase pickups? I always thought it had a unique sound, almost like it needed more distortion or a better amp or something. And Chris's tone was a little peculiar to me as well, which I attributed to his music man???

@@insufferablethrashelitist9305 I believe Dave’s old BC Rich was the out-of-phase guitar. I don’t dig too deeply into Megadeth’s past with Chris. Sometimes he’ll share a story, or even answer questions should I ask them. But I did bring up Dave’s sound back when, asking Chris about it while also asking him about their tracks being out of tune. He had told me that they tuned to ear for recording and never used a tuner. That, and Dave loved the sound of his pickups wired out of phase back then which is still an audible tone in the “Peace Sells…” album.
I didn’t even know that Chris played Ernie Ball. I know he had deals with BC Rich, Paul Reed Smith (briefly - eg: “Return to Metropolis” cover), Yamaha, Schecter, and Legator. Perhaps he had a few others sandwiched in between.
As for Chris’ sound, he always embodied that full, rich, smooth lead tone. Mixed with a unique take on metal soloing through his jazz roots, his sound is unmistakable. Even on the Megadeth album, “The System Has Failed,” you’ll always be able to tell which solos are his despite his absence from Megadeth recordings for over two decades. As the debate is constant over who the best Megadeth lead guitarist is/was, Chris is easily the front runner as the most unique.

  • @Sommertest

George has it correct. Mustane was pissed about getting fired, and when Metallica came out with new lyrics and title he decided to record his version. The intent by Dave was to play Mechanix at his shows as a middle finger to Lars and James. My understanding of the split was Dave partied a little too hard and had artistic differences with Lars. The straw was Dave fought one of the band’s roadies in Iowa during the cross to the New York recording, and that was too far for James. Metallica had become friends with Kirk prior to firing Dave, and decided to pull the figurative trigger. When they got to New York, the woke Dave up and handed him a bus ticket back to Ca.

I agree 100% it's the best version. It's Goldilocks. Four Horseman is too slow and lacks the energy, Megadeth's Mechanix is too fast for the sake of revenge and looses the groove. I will say Gar's drumming on this is miles ahead of Lars or any other thrash drummers from the early 80's, he's just flexing his jazz muscles to the max here. James's voice on the demo is not great but the song on the demo track is just played at the perfect tempo. Also Ron McGovney's bass guitar is super good on that demo.

A lot of big name record companies of the time refused to label bands that played it, figuring it wouldn't sell, and wouldn't get radio play. Partly true. Metallica with Cliff Burton was better than Megadeth for the first 3 albums (Kill Em All, Lightning and Puppets). I'd put Justice there too but Lars and James should have left the bass in. The Black album was great but they had sold out and it was more of a Bob Rock album than a Metallica album. Load and Reload were grunge garbage with a few great songs mixed in. St. Anger was and still is a pile of dogshit. The songs are OK live but the studio sound of Lars' drums and the lack of guitar solos and Bob Rock on bass. Their last two albums (Death Magnetic and Hardwired) they have gotten their sound back (thanks to getting rid of Bob Rock and finding another great bass player in Robert Trujillo and actually letting him play on the album and letting him and Kirk help the write songs) it's a shame because that is the sound and camaraderie and respect that Jason wanted them to have the entire time he was with the band. Rust in Peace is better than any album Metallica did after Cliff died and since then Megadeth are the better band. I'd put Metallica with Cliff #1, Megadeth with Marty Friedman #2, first two Metallica albums with Jason #3, last two Metallica albums with Robert #4, all other incarnations of Megadeth #5 and everything else by Metallica (Load, Reload, St. Anger and Lulu) last.

There's no question of Dave's all around chops on guitar, but you listen to the four horsemen solo and then this mechanix solo, it's clear to me beyond the main reason you correctly cite that they would have at least felt like they had an upgrade on lead at the time. These guys mention it, back then at least Dave's leads often decended into just going fast without saying anything, chromatic burning 24/7. Kirk even on Kill Em All sounded tasty.

It's super impressive to me how well he nailed that sound and still made it sound musical but at the same time I do think it just hits way harder at the slowed down four horsemen tempo.

He never has. Hammett has been playing the same phrases in all the solos in every song of all the albums since 1982, and after all this time he also got a lot worst. He’s never been technical. On the other hand, Mustaine is not consistent. In the first 2 albums he played very difficult solos, but excluding Lucretia he started to slow down a lot on Rust In Peace, then spent all the 90s writing simples licks. He came back with Endgame anyway. Concerning this solo, Mustaine’s version has more notes and a wider variety of phrases. Technically, there’s no comparison.

The first Megadeth album, as Dave Mustaine himself said, was the record of revenge. He wanted to show that he could play better and faster than the former band. And he definitely made it, since there’s a huge gap between the two bands’ skills, being Megadeth technically much better; Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson had played together in a Jazz / Fusion band called The New Yorkers before they joined Megadeth. The rest, for me, is all about what you like better.

To be clear, though, Dave wrote them both. He composed the complete 4 horseman layout when he was with Metallica. He talked about the sweet home alabama part in an interview.
