Future world champion in the making
To quote the late Muhammad Ali, when he was asked what the central part of his training was, he replied “Dodging the nightclubs and the parties and being in the bed by yourself at 9 o’clock at night. Dodging ladies is the main thing, especially when you’re pretty like me”.

The scenes in black and white and the music videos were not filmed by myself although i didn’t stylise them, otherwise all else filmed by myself. Having said that, fancy footage doesn’t make a story by itself and the source is the inspiration is brother Yaseen.

Yeah, no denying that! I’ll be real I watch an incredible amount of boxing ringside and Yaseen really stands out! The first time we met was at the intermediate finals and we’d briefly spoken online when I commented on one of his posts on instagram, but watching that fight he left an impression with that performance which ultimately lead to me reaching out to him expressing my wish to feature him in the series.
I really do wish that more Boxers and youth take a leaf out of his book as he is showing you can succeed in and out of the ring with the right mindset.

Yes big respect my bro! Yaseen went onto win his 2nd London Final on 22nd Mar beating an undefeated 23-0 boxer and is now crowned 2 x London Champion. He’s seeded as number 2 in the National finals and will aim to go better than last year. The London final victory was a big statement because Dylan was the first boxer to have beaten Yaseen and beat some top boys to get to the final.
Islington definitely one of the top clubs in the city and the country!

Great watch. enjoyed the cinematography and the audio was clean. Enjoyed seeing the religious aspect. Been thinking on that a lot recently definitely need more representation in film. the story was good. we got to know the brother, background, beliefs and goals. inshallah it can reach wider audience. a small note i'd say is that it was random to see him at a martial arts studio. would have been interesting to hear yaseen talking about how that came about and how one sport helps the other. other than tht really great work.

I think i made an error of judgement with the mic i used in the dojo and it took a ton of work in post to normalise the audio and get rid of some echo. Lesson learnt!
With Islam having played a very positive role in my personal life too, I really wanted to try and dispel some of the stereotypes.
Yaseen actually started out training martial arts at the Dojo before boxing. I realised early on that it wasn’t going to be possible to go into depth in all areas in a short video and instead focused on the relationship between faith and fighting plus the conflict period but you raise a valid point.
There are hours of footage that i didn’t use which covered all these aspects but it would have become a feature length doc and I want to make sure
i can provide an engaging 15-20min video before attempting something of that nature.
Islington Gym seems like a class club and gym 🙌
Islington is a top -top gym. I’m forever looking for excuses to go back because being there you are surrounded by great people and you do really get the feeling of belonging if you know what i mean. Producing top boxers as well you can’t go wrong going here!

Love for the support always brother - I think I will produce similar projects going forward, but since this one took 4 months to produce, go back to doing short boxer profiles alongside like the ones in the first series. i.e short and sweet videos under 5min

We thought about waiting until the elite finals in April to round it off but decided it wasn’t essential in telling the story and it would be better to finish the video for Jan. Im excited for the Elites though and hope he goes on to win the National this year 🤲🏾

Thanks for asking first of all but honestly it’s something I’m still battling. Music is something I’ve been pursuing way before boxing, luckily for me it’s more R&B music than drill (two whole different audiences) but just over the 3 years I’ve gotten really good at boxing, so now I’m in 2 minds. I’m leaning towards going full in music, then down the line getting into influencer boxing that way I can still box.
I think it’s a good dilemma to have in some respects and Sifu Marc Davis touched on it saying that it’s OK to return to an art form at a later date. Boxing is a young athlete’s sport so that’s worth bearing in mind, but you’ll ultimately know which way is best if you trust your
gut.

Senior elite finals this year is very likely to be a meeting before Yaseen and Dylan Oke from Don Davis. Dylan back from injury and an undefeated boxer that handed Yaseen his first loss. That will be an amazing final should both progress 🥊🥊

You know this is the first video that i’ve produced in a true documentary style without any directing. Usually with the other ones I direct the action to make it more compelling and explosive, but Yaseen really brings the goods to the table in his day-to-day training and it still makes for compelling viewing.

You know first time I messaged Yaseen it was in reply to a post of his about coming up with the name chessboxer, as at the time i thought it wasn’t authentic bearing in mind the Kung Fu film produced in 1979 called The Mystery of Chess Boxing and the Album by Wu Tang Clan named after the movie, but I think he has really made the name his and earned it!
