So here's the really insane thing about them... They formed in 2002, the album was released in 2006, 9 of the 13 songs were already on their 2004 demo and they were pretty much exactly the same as they are on the album. Now here's the fun part... They're all self taught, each of them picking up their respective instruments for the first time in 2001/2002 when they were barely 16-ish years old. The drummer (Matt Helders) didn't even want to be a drummer, he was practically forced to sit behind the kit because everyone else had already picked the guitars. The fact that the whole band became so good in such a short time is astonishing. Like they gained XP from thin air.
The youthful energy and insane creativity of this album are undeniable, sadly the more they learned about established music the more boring and pretentious they got, Base Hotel & Casino was the most pedestrian stuff I've ever heard.
It’s interesting you recognised the strokes influence. The first line of the first song in their 6th album is “i just wanted to be one of the strokes” so it’s definitely an influence for them
I love that reference. Yeah there's definitely influence from The Strokes. I also should've mentioned The Clash as well. I've heard some say this was during the time of Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party as well and I'm hearing a lot of those even though these all emerged around the same time.
FYI: When I say "accents," I mean musically, not Alex's voice. Accents are those spots in the music where the band hits the notes all in sync at the same time. A great example in this album is during "The View From The Afternoon" when Alex says "set you up" in the verse. The band is "accenting" the rhythm that Alex is mouthing. Edit: Thank you Chris Martin for pointing this out.
@@the_oslovian he had left a comment and wasn't sure whether I was talking about Alex's English accent or the accents in the music. I decided to clarify lol

I don’t want to sound dramatic but Arctic Monkeys changed my life. For me every one of their albums doesn’t drop below an 8/10 and each album bleeds in to the next. This years release has some of their best tracks
I think, other than a few tracks, they rarely fall below a fairly high songwriting standard. They have very few "stinkers". However, since the first few albums, they have had a habit of making music that is good, but just doesn't have that spark. Lacking that lustre that makes songs shine. Just slightly above mid.
This is one of the greatest debut album of all times, along with Silent Alarm by Bloc Party, that would be a great reaction if you havent listened to it already
This album did so well partly because it was so relatable. A lot of songs along the lines of "I went to a bar/club and saw a gorgeous girl there and totally failed to ask her out". Honestly, who can't relate to that. With the talk of accents, not sure always if you mean musical or vocal. Especially early on I don't think Alex turner could sing any other way but with a broad Yorkshire accent (and especially with local dialect thrown in at times). Musically, the fast staccato stumming style was kind of popular at the time with (as you mentioned), the strokes, Franz Ferdinand, razorlight, bloc party and others I don't remember right now. Note the "Red Light indicates the doors are secure" is a sign in the back of a black taxi in the UK. They took 5 passengers in the back (2 facing backwards, 3 forwards), so yeah, you figured it out. It's about chatting in the taxi on the way home after a night out.
Totally see that. A lot of it felt like guys just trying to figure out the bars and clubs. Thanks for asking that! When I say accents, I mean musically. But Alex's accent was definitely making the songs for me too.
They are great live. I saw them open for the Black Keys about 10 years ago. Not a lot of bands are great live, but their set sounded just like the albums. Very tight sound
i’m cracking up at you requesting a softer song, with riot van being next lmaooo perfect timing! i also wish they’d play vampires live ;( i bet it’s so fun, maybe someday they’ll bring it back! alsooo i always love seeing people react to a certain romance, it’s definitely one of their best songs. that explosion of an outro with the overlapping guitars just has me in awe everytime
AM's drummer is amazing and he's the band's primary backing vocalist! Also, this is the rare album where side 2 is better than side 1....at least imho!
The amount of times I've heard When the Sun Goes Down and I've never heard the analysis of it sounding sinister and the start and end being the moments the sun goes up and down. Never have thought about that. Great vid.
Great reaction! I personally got into them last summer and I haven't looked back since. They've become one of my favourite bands/artists ever. They change style with almost every album so there's something for every taste/mood, I feel. And yes, they are big fans of The Strokes. Fun fact, in their album "Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino" the opening line is "I just wanted to be one of The Strokes", that tells you all you need to know Hope you'll listen/react to the rest of their discography!
Yeah I listened to a couple of things by them across their later albums but hadn't done a deep dive and I immediately fell in love with this album. That's an awesome fact. I love The Strokes so that makes me happy. And I'm looking forward to doing more from them next year!
Im jealous that you get to hear this for the first time in this video 😂 this style of arctic monkeys completely sums up my late teens - early 20s. What a time to be alive. They were played everywhere as well ❤ what a band
they definitely got a lot, if not most, of their inspiration from the strokes… don’t know if you’ve listened to tranquility base hotel & casino yet, but alex opens that album saying, “i just wanted to be one of the strokes.” iconic! ❤️ i’d 1000% recommend u react to that album, it’s an INSANE change but so so so impressive
The first two Arctic Monkeys albums, and a little bit of the third one, Matt, the drummer was a monster. I don't know how he isn't bored out of his mind playing the new stuff.
I have to say playing some of the stuff on the latest couple of records is harder. He is showing he isn't just a rock drummer. He is developing into a great percussionist.
This is such a good album! And the next two too! Dropped off around their 4th personally (they seemed to be mellowing out a bit much for my taste) but damn those first three... SO GOOD in different ways Alex Turner's side project Last Shadow Puppets, The Age of Understatement is also really good. A 60s throwback must listen!
I liked the reaction, if you're planning on doing more albums then their second album favourite worst nightmare is the most similar to this one, if slightly more evolved. Humbug is desert rock, more experimental and quite different from this. Suck it and See was more timid but has some of their best lyrics (but maybe their worst song Brick by Brick), AM was their most popular in the US, Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino is a concept album about a hotel on the moon and is very different from their prior music. Its one of their most polarising albums, i thought it was alright on my first listen but it grew on me massively and some of the songs are among my favourite ever. The Car came out his year and felt like a more down to earth version of TBHC, also not that popular but is probably my favourite album ever after subsequent listens
Great review of a great album! One of the best debuts of all times! Unfortunately they have never managed to surpass this. I'm not saying that they don't have any other good albums, but none of those as good as their debut.
No way! I love to see some RHCP appreciation, I find By the Way to be one of my favourite albums too not only because of the alt-rock/pop-rock vibe it has but because of the album cover which I find to be very unique and that’s why I have it as my pfp. Going back to Arctic Monkeys and this particular album, it amazes me to see someone that can appreciate the garage rock style it has, from Alex’s voice tone to the great work Matt put on the drums overall. I don’t know if you are trying to review the albums in order but I would absolutely watch a humbug reaction in the future. Both bands are definitely on my top 5 of all time so ill most likely be here if you upload something related to them, nevertheless, I found your channel very interesting, and it seems to me like our music taste is very similar so I’ll be checking it out.
I get your idea of comparison but as a massive fan of both the Strokes and Arctic monkeys, they are clearly different. Songs like mardy bum and basically this whole album is so incredibly British in its writing and also the way he sings is very different from Julian.
Oh yeah I mentioned in the video that the Arctic Monkeys are their own thing and between the two bands they are two different styles when you get into their character. This album has a lot of similarities to Is This It, but there is much more attack and power in the Arctic Monkeys than there is from the Strokes, especially in the drums, and I can 100% hear the British influences not just in the lyrics, but in the music too. And the comparison between Julian and Alex is me saying that their voices are the personality that make their bands. They don't sound alike in the slightest.
Great review of one of my favourite albums. I watched with interest your keen observations on the lyrics of Riot Van and Red Light .. as both of these tracks particularly have many cultural references to growing up the UK. A fabulous album. For me, any one track on Whatever …, Favourite Worst Nightmare or AM is better than the entirety of the recent albums, Tranquility Base … and The Car .
one of my favourite albums! Used to listen to this on my ipod on the bus to school :) I am about to see them this week and so excited! If you're interested in post punk with drummers who do interesting stuff, I'd recommend Future Of The Left. They aren't super well known but have a cult following, and I'd start with their first album Curses or their second, Travels With Myself And Another. They've got some funny ones too 🤠

It's funny how much you compare Arctic Monkeys to The Strokes, since Alex Turner has made it very clear that he loves The Strokes and that they were a big inspiration. He even sings in one of the songs from their 2018 album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casiono "I just wanted to be one of The Strokes". Anyway, I really love watching people review stuff I love, it gives me so much joy. I would reccomend you to check out their other albums as well. Although the lyrics of Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not are very clever and fun, they don't have much of a poetic element. In their later albums though, especially Humbug (2009) and Suck It and See (2011), there are more metaphors and poetry put into the lyrics, which shows how talented of a song writer Alex really is.
If you want to go into some really crazy rock albums you should check out the band Swans. Their first album came out in 1983, and their 16th album is supposed to come out in 2023. Throughout their discography they've covered so many different sub genres of rock. From No-wave, to gothic rock, to neo-folk, to drone/ambient, to post-rock and noise rock. They honestly have the single best discography of any band in my opinion, just from the sheer variety, quantity, and quality of albums they've released. They're best albums near or exceed 2 hours in length, and they uniquely use repetition to give their music a sort of "hypnotic" quality. If you want to just dive in headfirst their most acclaimed albums are Soundtracks for the Blind(1996), and their "trilogy of albums from the 2010s(The Seer, To Be Kind, and The Glowing Man). If you want the start with something more accessible, then go for White Light From the Mouth of Infinity(1991) or The Great Annihilator(1995).
Please you have to react and review all the albums from the Arctic Monkeys, they are amazing and every album has new elements, it will be very nice to watch you reacting to their changes and "evolution"
Hello! Sorry I haven't commented for a bit. The past 2 albums that you reacted to are ones that I would want to listen to for myself before watching a reaction. This is one of my favorite debuts of all time and one of my favorite albums of the 2000s in general. I prefer The Strokes to Arctic Monkeys but I think they are both good bands in their own right. For me, this is where Arctic Monkeys peaked, which is interesting since its their first full album. The energy and the songwriting is amazing on the whole album. Favourite Worst Nightmare is close to this album in quality for me, but I don't think the band ever made an album as good as this one. Going through the band's discography and seeing their sound change with every album is a fun experience.
Hey there! I appreciate you commenting but no worries at all! I'm just glad you decided to stick around the channel and that is perfect for me! I totally agree about the Strokes. I just love how tight the band is and they put on a fantastic live performance. They definitely hold specials places in my heart now. And I'm leaning towards agreeing with you given what I've heard about Arctic Monkeys later releases, although I'm still excited about FWN and everything moving forward.
I agree. Why would a band that does so interesting stuff, do so boring stuff. I look forward to Alex stops thinking he is Serge Gainsborough. Very boring.
@@Brainman365 I agree. It all comes down to what Alex likes to incarnate him self as at the time. I think The Car is worse. He doesn't have to voice of a crooner..
just wanted to say at around 24:00 where you mention the meaning behind red lights indicate doors are secure it’s about a strip club - ‘how come it’s already £2.50 we’ve only gone about a yard’ is him with a girl at the strip club and the well try get 6 in is them getting into the club

If you want the start with something more accessible, then go for White Light From the Mouth of Infinity(1991) or The Great Annihilator(1995).
That's a solid crash course! thank you for sharing this, that's a lot of good listening material I'll definitely check them out!
their best album
I love this album to pieces now!
It's a classic but but imo their second album Favourite Worst Nightmare was alot better
When you think how young they were when they wrote thai album... how can a teenager come up with lyrics like this?
Please you have to react and review all the albums from the Arctic Monkeys, they are amazing and every album has new elements, it will be very nice to watch you reacting to their changes and "evolution"
I will definitely be checking out the rest from them on the channel!
You'd love their album Humbug ! ;)
Great reaction!!!
Thanks for reacting! Great reaction and respect for this legendary album. This might be my fav album of all time. What’s yours?
this album had no right being this good!! talk about lightning in a bottle
The best album 🔥🔥🔥
I was disappointed with the sound of “AM” onwards. I stop listening to Arctic Monkeys because of that. My two favorite albums are the first 2
I'm feeling that already. I loved this album and hoping the others grow on me.
I agree. Why would a band that does so interesting stuff, do so boring stuff. I look forward to Alex stops thinking he is Serge Gainsborough. Very boring.
I was OK with AM but Tranquility Base and The Car were just poor attempts at crooning! What were Alex and co thinking.
@@Brainman365 I agree. It all comes down to what Alex likes to incarnate him self as at the time. I think The Car is worse. He doesn't have to voice of a crooner..
loveeed this
You keep mentioning accents. They are from Sheffield, UK. That's just how they speak.
YES
Thanks for checking it out!
That's my man
Appreciate it!
just wait until you hear their 3rd Humbug, oh boy you're in for a treat. and on the percussion side of things... Pretty Visitors, i mean sheeshhh...
I was the 505 like 😊
just wanted to say at around 24:00 where you mention the meaning behind red lights indicate doors are secure it’s about a strip club - ‘how come it’s already £2.50 we’ve only gone about a yard’ is him with a girl at the strip club and the well try get 6 in is them getting into the club
Arctic monkeys are better than oasis because they did several different albums instead of several of the same album.,just saying 😂
I never liked their change of sound after the 2nd album. Alex Turner trying to sound like a classic crooner is just so contrived
