The first time you listen, Karma Police and Paranoid Android seem like the best songs. By the fifth listen, you realize Exit Music and No Surprises are just as good. By the tenth listen, you realize Let Down is one of the best songs of all time.
I totally agree. This experience of listening to albums has uncovered so many of my favorite songs that I would not have heard otherwise. I have a lot of favorites from these two albums already.
It took 10 years for Let Down to become my favorite Radiohead song and it has stayed on top ever since.
@@alexmw14 It was my favourite from the start. The way it pulls you in with that intro, it's pure magic. I've been working a lot of third shifts and often I'd put on let down as I finish the shift and get into a bus back home.
All there albums are like that my favorites change all the time ut Climbing Up the Walls is still probably still my favorite. A similar thing happened when Weird Fishes creeped up to end up being a song that I love.
After my 100th listen, climbing up the walls went from one of my least favorite songs to my 2nd favorite of theirs, only second to how to disappear completely.
Everyone remembers the first time they hear this album because it's life changing.
So glad I waited until I was older to dive into the band
Let Down is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. The albums overall theme are very much about worries for the future and future technology. In that context Let Down really says (to me anyway) that no matter how convenient and comfortable technological development gets it's just not good enough. The human heart needs more than that. It's a really moving piece, and for sure my favourite from this album!
Man I wish I could hear Radiohead for the first time again…

OK Computer, Kid A, and In Rainbows are the Holy Trinity of Radiohead albums.
Radiohead are masters of several things: #1- highly unusual and unpredictable chord progressions and timings, #2- ridiculously beautiful and ethereal atmospheres, and #3- layers working together as a whole. Radiohead has very few "showy" solos. Instead the whole band gels like one organism with each musician being sophisticated enough to honor the section of sound they're responsible for, and giving other musicians room to work.
As far as "sounding like Muse", or "sounding like Coldplay", etc, please keep in mind, Radiohead came BEFORE those bands, and those bands VERY much owe a debt to Radiohead. But I'd argue Radiohead are wayyyyy more experimental and diverse than those bands. For example, an album like "Kid A" or "In Rainbows" sounds nothing like those bands. They're a truly great band and masterful composers whose career has shown an ability to compose extremely diverse forms of music.
Agreed with all of those 3 points. I had touched on each one of those throughout the review so we are on the same page there.
I did mention when the album came out, being 1997, well before Muse or Coldplay were active. So I'm aware who came first. I also mentioned how influential Radiohead was on first listen so I'm definitely not foreign to their impact on the musical scene. Especially with how vast their musical range is, which I also mentioned in Kid A's review. And I expect the same to continue moving forward, next up being In Rainbow.

I actually heard it was supposed to symbolise a microwave being done, as a sort of final reflection on the modern world. maybe it’s open to interpretation
Cool theory, but i think its a microwave ring, which symbolizes this silly cold modern world, like: "Here you have your microwave burrito, eat it watching some TV. This is your life."
It’s no surprise that many consider this to be one of the best albums of all time. Perfection.

Suggestion... Continue in chronological order to hear how Radiohead have evolved over time. Next album would be KidA (2000). Very different sound than OK Computer.

The trifecta of Radiohead Albums are OKC, Kid A, and In Rainbows. The next album chronologically is Kid A which dives deeper into the electronic and experimental side of their sound. I would listen to that next!

@@lusciousluie That’s actually what I did back in 2019. I heard Creep from a random UA-cam recommendation of its music video, and I was intrigued in the band. I went chronologically starting with Pablo Honey, and it was such a great experience. If you enjoyed the journey, their b-sides from all eras are definitely worth hearing! ❤
I will count kid A and Amnesiac as one, since they were composed at the same time and have just one year difference of release date.
IMO The Bends is where it all started. For me the holy trinity are The Bends, OKC and Kid A - which coincidentally came out in a row. In Rainbows is amazing though and a return to form, later on.
There's nothing I love more than watching a first time reaction to Paranoid Android. It starts out soft, then get's groovy, then goes HARD, then descends into the gloomy depths of hell before rising back up for the climactic finish. It's fun to see people's expectations diverted.
Such an interesting and thoughtful reaction, this album changed my life and i have loved it for 25 years. Let Down is possibly the best song ever recorded.
Oh god . The memories . I was 17 when this album came out and it changed everything . Listened to it religiously back to back for months .

Definitely check out The Bends. It's still in my top ten rock albums of all time. Really honestly just a rock album, with several brilliant songs that hint at the greatness of OK, Computer, and some of the most satisfying chord progressions I've ever experienced on even the first listen.

This band was life changing for me when I discovered them a couple years ago. They are so special and their sound is like heaven on earth for me. They have at least 50 songs that I love. Thom Yorkes vocals have brought me to tears on numerous occasions
Electioneering gets a lot of hate for its seemingly poor placement on the album but it's one of my favorite RH tracks. Just a no holds barred rock jam

This album is considered a modern classic. It may take a few listens but it's an opinion I'm on board with. An album I keep coming back to
I'd probably compare their artistic approach in this album to Deftones. The music is totally unique from each other but they both create very vivid imagery and intense emotion in the lyrics.
It's great to see a younger generation discovering Radiohead and ok computer. This album wound up on my shelf in CD form when i was 14 or 15. I honestly don't remember buying it. And a year or so later I listened to it, and was blown away. And then a couple years later, kid a blew me away again. Looking forward to watching your kid a reaction.
Luie, your reviews are super intelligent and eye-opening, even for a long-time radiohead fan. They've been a pleasure to watch, and you taught me many things I didn't know about my favorite band. You've also made me appreciate how lucky (and old) I was to see them live and perform all these songs a bunch of times. Keep doing what you're doing, you've got a real knack for this.
Don't sleep on Radiohead's EPs. 1994's _My Iron Lung EP_ and 1998's _Running From Demons EP_ are brilliant addendums to the albums. And if you liked _Ok Computer,_ you want to hit Slowdive's _Souvlaki_ (1993) - a seminal '90s classic & big influence on _OKC._

I've always loved the idea of it playing over the end credits as people are leaving this commercialized Hollywood version of Shakespeare, singing at them "we hope that you choke" over and over 😂
I first discovered Radiohead thru my mom , who after hearing me listening to Muse, told me to check them out. I was a teenager at the time so obviously I just picked one random song from one of their newer songs at the time, and didn't really care for it and moved on.
Years later I'm watching reaction videos about Muse songs (lol!) and a specific reactor I particularly enjoyed listened to Pyramid Song, and it clicked with me for good. Since then I have been listening to Radiohead religiously, especially Ok Computer since I discovered it after that. My fave I would say is Subterranean Homesick Alien, the vibes are immaculate! But honestly I listened to the whole album on repeat for a good 2 years.
And what a funny surprise I would get, when I decided to share some radiohead songs with my mom (at the time we had an awkward relationship and I tried to connect with her in some clumsy ways) and she was not really paying attention but when Pyramid Song came on she said something along the lines of "Oh, I know this song, I love this one it's my favorite!"
To think that the song that made me fall in love with Radiohead's music, would be the same song that my mom enjoyed the most. She also mentioned listening to them when I was a baby so I think I can guess why I ended up liking this band so much🤭♥️

Probably the best Radiohead album reaction video I've seen on here! They've got a bunch of great and interesting albums. I'd certainly recommend listening to the album that came out right after this one, Kid A.

I think this other Sigur Rós album would be a better entry point into their music, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. It's a wonderful representation of the Sigur Rós sound without being too ethereal. If you enjoy it then you should definitely listen to my original suggestion Ágætis Byrjun.

@@lusciousluie Oh Man , Bjork's a Genre all to herself. But her Music is mainly written, composed, arranged, (co)produced by herself 🤯. She was in a couple of bands b4 goin solo (her 1st solo album came out in 93) .
She's one of a handful of musical artists that I Highly Recommend Listening to in Chronological Order(Mac's on this list as well) . If Art-Pop/Glitch-pop/Electronica/EDM/with a mix of Classical Strings and more , Plus Amazingly Deep Poetic-Like Lyrics sound like something you may like.. Go 4 It 👊 , you won't regret the ride.

I was in high school when Pablo Honey came out and then The Bends, both albums are great. It wasn’t until OK Computer came out that I was hooked on Radiohead. I was fortunate enough to see them live at the woodlands during their Hail to the Thief tour. Also, if you are a fan of the Strokes and have never listened to The Voidz. It would be interesting to see a reaction video on their album Virtue. These videos are good, good job.
That's awesome that you were able to check them out! I'm sure that was a great setlist as well for that era! I've listened to a couple of songs by The Voidz and I love Julian's approach in the band. Certain songs gave me an underground sludgy and electronic style that I love.

It's tricky with greatest albums, because each generation has an album that moves things on. So we have the Beatles in the sixties, maybe Pink Floyd in the seventies, and so on. Others may name other releases. But, I agree that this it surely one of the great albums of all time.

Its so refreshing but I'm disappointed I hadn't listened to them sooner!
Subterranean Homesick Alien is the first song on the album that clicked for me. I had a friend who’s musical taste I really respected and he loved this album. He wouldn’t shut up about it so I asked for it for a Valentines Day gift back in 98. I had only heard Creep at the time and didn’t like Radiohead at all. So I listened to Ok Computer day and night(literally) for two months straight starting on Valentines Day 25 years ago. But It wasn’t clicking. On an early morning drive home from work, Subterranean Homesick Alien came on as the sun was coming up and it clicked. It’s been my favorite album ever since. Tool’s Lateralus is a pretty close second.
Radiohead is a genre unto themselves.
Agreed. I can see how influential they were as a band to so many others. I have heard things in their music that I've heard in bands like Coldplay, Muse, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and The Black Keys.

Yeah I'm so glad to have waited out on listening to their material until I was older and more experienced as a musician to appreciate it. I'm excited to hear In Rainbows later this week.
The first song i heard from Radiohead was "high and dry" from "now: that's what i call music" they had really good hits, then i heard creep, paranoid android and no surprises. The first album i listened in its entirity was OK Computer i was blown away and Radiohead replaced the beatles as my favorite band.
I was completely obssesed with Paranoid Android and Subterranean Homesick Alien i listened those songs everyday for at least a complete year.
I also loved staying up late 'cause MTV aired karma police's video past midnight, we didn't had UA-cam guys!!
Exit music for a film was named like that because it was composed for the ending credits of Romeo + Juliet (the one with Leonardo DiCaprio).

Thanks for the review. Radiohead are in the rock and roll hall of fame since 2019 and what i like about my favorite band is he make discover so many style of music and dont repeat the same style every album :). In Rainbows , Ok Computer, Kid A and the Bends are my 4 favorite album for me.
That's such a bold choice as a musician to explore different styles of music because you risk losing your audience but they've managed to evolve and still have the majority of their listeners beside them.
If you haven't checked it, see them play Electioneering on Leno back in the day -- Jay apparently told them "play something more upbeat" after they had previously played High and Dry (or Fake Plastic Trees) and, well, they went tf off💯
Such a great upbeat song. I wonder if it had any influence on the Black Keys. It felt very much up their alley.

One thing I forgot to mention is that they have a shi*-ton of really great b-sides the lead singer is so anal about song selection and arrangement that they always leave a few really good tunes off every record. Add to that the songs they recorded that were between records and you have about 3 albums worth of songs that a lot of bands would love to have as their a-sides it really is remarkable how many exellent songs are not on their albums it makes it fun tracking them down and they have a lot of different versions of songs floating around as well.
That's actually amazing to hear.
I bought the first three albums on way to a holiday in India and it was on of the best musical experiences of my life

I made a giant spreadsheet with my top 150 or so albums, about 10 different criteria, and this album, mathematically, scored the highest. So I suppose the research shows, that OK Computer is my favorite album!!

A damn fine album, and I'd recommend The Bends by them as well. Don't know if The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy made it over to the north america - started life as a fun sci-fi radio show with "spacey sounds" then became books and a TV Show. Radiohead were listening to it whist recording OK Computer. Marvin, the paranoid android, is from that show.
I'm excited to get to The Bends. I know that we do have Hitch-hiker's in NA but I have not watched it yet. That is an awesome fact though and I'll be on the lookout for it now!
Exit music was actually for a film it was for Romeo and Juliet which explains the lyrics. The song is hauntingly beautiful. Exaplains the tone and gothic vibe If you watch the movie it ends in a church. You cut out my favorite part the “we hope that words and wisdom choke you” as the crechendo hits.
Need to react to OKNOTOK at some point which is the B-Sides/Unreleased tracks from OK Computer at some point as the tracks could stand alone as an album in itself... especially Pearly and Palo Alto.....
Also the xylophone on No Surprises is a child's toy! You can see it used on their live performances...

If so, you should react to the album "Age Of Adz" by Sufjan Stevens, it's quite chaotic, sometimes compared to Kid A as it is heavily electronic. It's a great listen if you enjoy Radiohead!

Airbag is about Thom York's involvement in a car accident and the instrumentation is unsettled, reflective of the slowdown effect that we can experience in moments of extreme stress ("felt like so long"). Exceptional use of a fragmented bass line which becomes less fragmented as the "crash" ends. Ethereal glimmery synths finishing with a glorious A major chord. A great track. One of my favorites.
There really isn't a bad track on OKC (well Fitter Happier not so much). An unique view on technology and fear of the future. You should listen to THE BENDS their album before OKC. It's much more of a rocker and is an excellent record. Hints of OKC all over THE BENDS.

OK Computer was the first album I ever fell in love with, but Radiohead is so good that’s it’s not even my top pick.

Their audio engineer, Nigel Godrich, is often considered to be a member of the group - and it's easy to hear why.

Radiohead is the influence for Muse, Coldplay etc and was also heavily influenced by 90s alternative rock so no surprises (haha) that such inferences were made towards U2 and Muse

Thanks for the suggestions! I was actually in a Rush tribute band a few years ago. We only played a few shows but there are some videos of us playing on this channel. I will definitely incorporate Rush into the channel in some capacity.
Something I picked up on is how the writing likes to take these old addages and platitudes and turn them into something...barbed, and almost a little disconcerting.

Oh absolutely. Exactly what i was thinking when i heard "rain down from a great height." it sounded so unique and distinct in Thoms delivery. I think it totally transforms/twists the perception of those concepts. But in all of the ways I enjoy.
Both this album and Kid A (even some of In Rainbows) had that effect on me. I'm still getting chills during some of these songs.
