Thom Yorke once said that In Rainbows is about "the realisation of Oh my god I'm gonna die" and when you pay close attention to the album's lyrics and themes that makes a lot of sense. The album is about death and coming to terms with it and finding a way to live peacefully with your mortality, and then furthermore it expands upon all the various different things that happen in our lives and the emotions we feel, both sad and negative. The album title In Rainbows is really apt because the album truly stretches the rainbow of human experience. It's my favourite Radiohead album without a doubt

"How come I end up where I started?" The opening line of the album suggests the end of life - we were all "dead" before we were born, thus going back to the starting point. And the closer Videotape reads like suicide note in some ways, or at least the end of a life. The songs in between seem to be all about the many ways people confront this realization of death. Bodysnatchers (alienation/dissociation ). Nude (hedonistic pleasures, latching on to desires but never being fulfilled). Weird Fishes (escape). All I Need (latching on to another person for safety). Faust Arp (not really sure about this one haha). Reckoner (losing all your loved ones "we separate like ripples on a shore").

Again, a fantastic reaction. The album closer "Videotape" is so so interesting to see them perform live. Thom says it's one of the hardest to play, because the song originally had some very strange and progressive time signatures, that they still follow but don't play. This is sort of a stripped down version, but in their heads they still follow the odd time signatures it originally had. When you see them play it live, they rock out to this seemingly out of sync and in a faster pace than the rythm, because they all hear that original drive internally. They literally hear a different song than us. It's amazing and lowkey mindblowing. One could say that they overcomplicate things, but that's part of their genius approach if you ask me.

Never really thought about the contrast of the drums with the guitar on Weird Fishes. I love both and perhaps that contrast is precisely why I love the song as a whole so much. Love this album. Yes! This album has definitely grown on me the quickest because of its assortment of styles!
I would say from what I've heard kind of similar to what I had said in the intro:
OK Computer: I feel like it is the most underground of the three and its the one that sits most comfortably with my musical taste.
Kid A: This one challenged me the most musically and I very much appreciate everything that it had to offer. I think if I had listened to this prior to starting these reviews, I would not have been able to make it through the first tracks via normal listening. But I'm happy to say it is hitting a lot of chords for me personally and emotionally.
In Rainbows: Definitely the most percussive of the three and easily my favorite because of that. The most innovative of the three which is saying a lot. I just love how colorful each track is, no pun intended.
I also love that each one is so human, ethereal, and haunting all at once.

Don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this, but the intro to Nude is actually the instrumental of the outro reversed. It’s more noticeable when you isolate the specific stem, but still really cool nonetheless.
Nude has some modal mixture going on, where it has E major and C# minor as the harmonic center, but it tends to rest on a G# chord (both major and minor), which is the fifth degree of C# minor and the third of E major.
With Bodysnatchers, it actually switches between D major in the verses and D minor in the bridge. In the verses, both the vocals and the guitar hit a C natural instead of a sharp, which gives the verses a slightly darker Mixolydian feel compared to a regular major scale.
Lastly, Videotape is a very interesting song, mainly because of how it’s syncopated. The downbeat is actually half a beat after the piano plays a chord, so the proper rhythm of the piano and vocals is offset. It’s more noticeable in the other performances of the song (such as the 2006 Bonnaroo live performance and the From The Basement performances).

Love your in depth analysis and insightful commentary. There are two bands that I simply cannot get enough of: Radiohead and Tool. To those unfamiliar with these bands they me seem like disparate entities, but when it comes to musical complexity and striving for creativity and innovation, these two bands epitomize these concepts. I would love to see you react to Tool’s latest album, Fear Inoculum for multiple reasons. 1. You say you tend to get antsy with longer songs. Every song on Fear Inoculum is north of 10 minutes and I’d be curious to see how you do with it. 2. You look at how music and lyric combine to tell a story. I feel that Tool are masters of this. 3. You are a drummer and Danny Carey’s performance on this album may be the best percussive performance of any drummer in history (IMHO). 4. You seem to be drawn to music about the human condition. That’s Tool in a nutshell.

I never dove deep into their discography (Only a handful of songs across AEnima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days) but I would love to check out more of their music! Rhythmically and thematically, there's so much going on that I usually get lost in the music before I realize the song has been going on for 5-6 minutes. There are very repetitive songs that never end and those really get to me. I will definitely look at reviewing Tool in the future. Thank you for sharing!
