The impact this album had on British culture when it came out cannot be overstated. If you go to a pub on a Friday night and a teenage band's playing covers, you can almost guarantee they'll play I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, almost twenty years after it came out
@@smags1082nearly 20 years later, it still holds the record of being the fastest selling debut album by a band in UK history... over 360k copies sold within the first week.
Listen to You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur Jr, it influenced Sonic Youth and Nirvana. Kurt even asked the singer and guitarist J Mascis to join Nirvana twice!
Alex Turner was inspired by Jake Thackray, a Yorkshire troubadour who told serious and comedic tales through song. That's why so many Arctic Monkeys tracks are laid out as stories, 'When The Sun Goes Down' being prime example. For lads under twenty, they created iconic evergreen songs in-between forgettable ones on their first try. Riot Van, Marty Bum, When the Sun.., From the Ritz To The Rubble & A Certain Romance standout. It's admirable they managed to create a unique sound despite being influenced by The Strokes. They talked about topics you expect from eighteen year old band members from England; women, romance, drinking, their city and the music scene. Compared to another young talented singer song writer who grew up in that part of the world, Jake Bugg, the influence of American Blues means he sings with a Southern twang and writes songs titled, 'I've Seen It All'. He created a few bangers but naively fell into copying genre tropes. That's why the authenticity of Arctic Monkeys first album is noteworthy.
Recs: Third Eye Blind - Self- Titled Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway Parannoul - After the Magic clipping. - Visions of Bodies Being Burned please blud
The whole concept of the album is about the teenage life of kids in the UK/Europe... Going to clubs, trying your luck with girls, running from the police late at night cause being drunk is a horrible crime, replaying the whole night through a conversation with your mates in the taxi... there are some other motives in there too, but that's the core of it. That's what makes this album as good as it is, they managed to capture the childhoods of millions of people to the point where it's universal... it's always gonna be relevant and relatable.
Although this is one of my favourite AM albums, I totally understand what you mean. This is their debut album and was released when they were very young which I think shows in their fast pacing and lyrics (the use of a lot of British slang, songs about about drinking and going out, etc). Whereas with their later albums, there are deeper meanings to their lyrics and the songs have a slower pace (which a lot of people criticise now because they think their latest two albums have been too slow haha). I think you'd really enjoy their albums Humbug and AM as they have slower songs, great lyricism but still have some great guitar riffs as well :)
This record to me is how the brits internalized the boom of hip hop across the pond. Alex's delivery is so unique in that he is rarely melodic in this album. He takes a pocket and flows with it accordingly. It's very raw, and very direct without it being puffy or cheesy.
Coming from Sheffield and growing up very close to them (5mins away). This album resonated with many or us at the time. I even knew his ex girlfriend who he wrote Mardy Bum about. I seriously would go and listen to the later albums. They grew older and more successful they lost the local roots and became each album the grow as musicians and song writers. Tranquility Based Hotel And Casino is a wonderful nod to Alex’s love for Scott Walker. 🙌🏻 for 505 love , that is top tier Monkeys. Love your work!
Dude, you gotta do some LCD Soudsystem, please! Any of the first tree records. It will blow your mind, and we'll love watching it. Greetings from Portugal.
As someone who lived this album in real time in England I can tell you the hype was insane. Genuinely hit us like Nevermind did way back when which I also lived through.
The first two albums are just about their life in their hometown. The people on the streets and in the clubs etc. The thing i like about the first two albums if you're in the mood for this kinda thing both albums satisfy that itch.
listen to humbug or tranquility base for more arctic monkeys, i like their indie stuff (and ill get killed for this) but humbug and tranquility base are 100x better
If you like this album I recommend their next release, Favourite Worst Nightmare. Its got 505 on it and is generally considered to be one of their best
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MY GUY a few recommendations: Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
Their 2009 album Humbug is killer . They recorded it in the desert with Queens of the stoneage's Josh homme. It's more darker riff based and more of a variety.
I remember watching the music videos for the hits of this song on the TV when I was a kid in 2006 or so thinking it was the shit, but my fellow Americans obviously didn't agree.
Hi, can you please listen to the album duster - contemporary movement if you haven’t listened to it yet. A very interesting record that reveals this band from a slightly different side.
i‘ve been following you for a year now, never disappoint! i‘d love you to listen to favourite worst nightmare arctic monkeys 3rd album or tranquility base hotel & casino their 6th album. lots of love ❤️
Great reaction. It makes me a little sad though because you clearly don't relate to this perfect little snap shot of that time in a young persons life when they go out to clubs every weekend and drink and party. Although the music is great on this album it's the lyrics that make it special. So a great debut from such a young band.
The first two are classics but I'm more interested in your opinion on the most recent two if you ever hear them, I like them more than 3-5 but that's a rare opinion I think.
Not similar in sound at all, but would love for you to listen to The Midnight Organ Fight by Frightened Rabbit. They were a brilliant band from Scotland.
Arctic monkeys is rlly subjective. That’s what I think makes them such a good band. Almost everyone has a different favourite album proving how they can be great no matter how much their sound changes
Yesss this is a prerequisite to join the Reactor Elite. If you want more britcore listen to Food For Worms By Shame + watch Sexy Beast + get a fade + start wearing Fred Perry's head to toe. Love the vids Smag ❤
Best Arctic monkeys album in my view. I’ll suggest you Go tell fire to the mountain from WU LYF I really think you will appreciate it, (not like arctic monkeys but equally good).
The impact this album had on British culture when it came out cannot be overstated. If you go to a pub on a Friday night and a teenage band's playing covers, you can almost guarantee they'll play I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, almost twenty years after it came out
Damnnnnn I did not know that
@@smags1082I'm not even a huge fan of this band and still I cant argue how large this was in the uk when released. Especially Mardy Bum.

i think that actually happens in every country in the world
English culture*
I loved it but I don't remember it changing Welsh language culture sorry
Smags coming out as British is so brave from him he deserves all our support
English stole the word British from the Welsh in the 1700s ironically
@@penderyn8794 What are you talking about. British is from the Latin Britannia, anglicized to Britain.
This album is so good, a certain romance is peak indie rock
The album is peak indie rock
the way i knew the strokes were gonna be on autoplay afterwards
The consistency can’t be ignored
Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is an underrated masterpiece
Theres no more iconic 2000's album in the UK. Certain romance is pure nostalgic bliss
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People!!!

I'll keep telling him to do it but seems like he only responds If I comment within half an hour of the video release.
Influenced My Bloody Valentine’s guitar tone too!

The Velvet Underground by The Velvet Underground 😢 Changes between their albums are fantastic

I’m sure it’s already been recommended and if not happy to be the first: Skylarking by XTC
Cool album. Sort of reminds me of the acclaimed " Tracy Denim " by Bar Italia
