Great video my friend. Thank you for sharing. I used to grow shiitakes but then I went to school for chemical engineering. I really dislike everything about the people I work with so I am changing careers back to growing gourmet exotics...
Hey! I am wondering if I can steam-prepare substrate for species other than oysters with this method. Have you successfully used it for more (sterility)demanding species like maitake or lions mane?
Hi, I am looking to grow my own mushroom (my love of mushroom soup). What's the best and not risky way for a dummy like me? I am free on weekends and give 1-2 hrs at night after my work.
So does this work with supplemented substrate mixes like masters mix or wheat bran supplemented substrate? As I understand they need to be sterilized. If thats the case then I really don't know what the difference between pasteurization and sterilization. Would definitely appreciate some help on the Thanks
Any substrate block you produce with supplementation should be pasteurized or sterilized pasteurized is killing almost all bad things and anything that's left is very weak to spread quickly, and sterilized is everything is dead. I pasteurize for longer periods on my operation using masters mix and no farther supplementation. This will work if you want to pasteurize not sterilize. With spawn you usually want to sterilize. Like highly recommended for spawn.
Dude, please tell me you have a few holes in the cover of your barrel, especially if you are clamping the lid down. If not, you have build a pressure cooker, and I don't want to be around when the lid blows. Good luck.
Did you have some kind of blowout valve in case you forgot to open the steam vent? The cooling mechanism is very clever.
Yes I did that's a great point! It was fun my old presto cooker I drilled a hole and poped it in the side.

That's a pretty interesting story, glad you liked the video! More coming but waiting on a couple things. Best of luck friend!
I was just thinking that a 55 gal drum would be a pain to use for pasteurization as its not big enough to scale. Good to see Im not the only one.
Love the channel and the videos! I picked up your business card from the co op farmers market in Scranton! Great videos and mushrooms man!
Double B!
Thanks for the tips! Love the content on this channel
Awesome!!😁
We're at thend of an awful era. However I went to Mt view elementary In Vegas. Your names why I subbed
Great Content!
Thanks for your video ; )
How many times does it take to pasteurize?
One time, for around 24 hours
I'm doing the exact same project 😊
G'day, man you're a power house and I know this is the old system but, no pressure relief on the boiler scares me .. hope you fit one on future builds
I got one on it, forgot to show it, pinned comment, I think I mention it

Yes they all work with this method, just cook the blocks longer if necessary.
Tour of New mushroom cooker ??

@@mountainviewmushrooms71 ok that makes sense, thanks for the reply and keep up the great work with the content!
How many 24 hour sessions at 212F can you go on a single propane tank?
I use at least one and a half 30 pound tank for one cook
@@mountainviewmushrooms71 Thank you
How long do you let it run and what temp does it get up too?
212f for 24hours
What grade of bags are you using so they don't melt in the diy steamer ??
Special polypropylene pages I believe, standard in the industry.

What do you use for a lid?
2inch ridged board then put some weight on it
How long do you sterilize for?
A little over 24 hours
Do you follow TR with Earth Angel Mushrooms he is real cool but most of all strait to the point and from what I've seen prolly the most efficient
Yepper 👍
