    for the downforce problem, you could use a tension strap / securing strap or how they are called. put the straps around your container and secure the straps with one of those ratchets. you can get more than a ton of downforce, depending on your strap, that should be enough to keep that lid nice and tight down

    • @ShroomDaddy707
      @ShroomDaddy707 2 роки тому +1

      Could also still just utilizing the Velcro probably get more down force by having Velcro attached to lid and pull the Velcro Down as hard as u can and sticking the Velcro so be able to get little more pressure on the compared to pushing down with one hand as hard as u can while using ur other to pull the Velcro over and stick it.

    Only yet another option... Prefitted cabinet (spring loaded) catch n latches strategically placed around your stainless box. Then with that done right, you could possibly resolve the sealing down issue with your lid.

      I wonder if a return back to the generator might be beneficial. If the system were perfectly sealed, the increased air pressure from simple PV=nRdT would be problematic to say the least. You have enough leakage that you are forcing me he cool air out as you drive steam in, but as I am sure you have sussed, eventually your steam generator must produce sufficient steam to replace the volumetric and radiant leakage. Have you given thought to submerging your blocks in a cage instead? You would have the added step of draining off the water into a holding tank, but your steam volume loss could be far less. Yes, the blocks are buoyant, thus a cage. You have the experience, just trying to think how the next generation might be improved. Ultimately, you want to only provide heat to the thermal rather than thermal and steam volumetric losses. /shrug

    Wife-heater instead of the wife-beater.
    Or maybe the baked widow?
    I can only come up with wife puns...
    To get more serious: How did you come to the decision to (super-)pasteurize your substrate at 95 °C? Most often I could find either pasteurization at 80 °C or kill everything at 121 °C.
    Does the PID controler controlls, that the boiler is constantly near the boiling point and thus pumps steam constantly? Or do you hock up the PID controler to the steam tank, so that it remains a certain temp (95 °C)? Thanks in advance!

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  3 роки тому +1

      Haha, maybe I should call it my mistresses?
      I don't believe what I am doing is pasturisation, or even the fabled 'super pasturisation', I believe it's an incomplete sterilization. Cooking substrate for 24 hours at 95c reduces live organism numbers down to 0.1% of what they are before you start, and I think this gives the mycelium enough time to get a foot hold. I'll make a video about my reasoning shortly..

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  3 роки тому +1

      Further on this, you don't need to use 121, you can use other temperatures, it just makes the time required longer or shorter. It's called thermal death time.

    hey man, your vids are cool! I was wondering if you might be able to answer a question for me. For growing at home everyone seems to suggest a pressure cooker for sterilising the grain spawn whereas your using steam. I was just wondering if you had any idea why people are saying to use a PC over this method? I live in France and you can pick up a decent sized steam steriliser second hand dead cheap (all the old French folk have one for canning). I only have a tiny PC and can only get jam jar sized jars of grain in it! Thanks.

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  Рік тому

      a PC does use steam. All a PC allowes you to do is heat the steam past 100c degrees. If you can heat the steam past 100c, you can sterilise much faster.

    I'd name it according to its dimensions, however I would just tack on the word beast for theatrics. I'd also change the holes on the bottom for more even heating. The steam essentially has to escape through 2 containers. The second being that false floor. If you want to heat the middle differently, yet pack in more bags, why not create steam channels vertically? If not, perhaps create more spaces in the bottom grate. I imagine the Roman's knew a thing or two about steam baths. The Beast will be steam hungry either way!

    Thanks

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  3 роки тому

      There is a vent in the top and a pipe which lets its escape.

    • @neogeo8267
      @neogeo8267 2 роки тому

      Don't bother venting it. Stream at atmospheric temperature is lighter than air and will escape too if you do this. You actually need to vent the air from below which sounds counterintuitive but it's true... With a surface area this large it would take ton metric tons of weights just to allow half a kilo of steam pressure so there is zero chance of bursting this stream tank that way.

    Hey man, I thought you could use a solution for the lid. It's probably not a good idea for your back to lift this thing off regularuly and will most likely deform and rub off your seal. You have some sturdy beams right above your chamber, so how about installing a winch? Tuck some loops around every corner so you can lift the lid directly up and hold it up there right below the beams while you work around the chamber.
