It's certainly gaining in that column, partially fueled by Hollywood using it, which makes sense because it's so cinematic. Its use at the end of the Oscar-winning documentary "One Day in September" was so shocking, it was almost inappropriate. It was used over the photos of the dead Olympic athletes, and it was truly horrifying, but unbelievably effective. If you love the song like I do, I would actually recommend NOT seeing that film, as it will burn images into it that may stick with you forever.

In the summer of '72, my longlegged girl and I went to a triple bill at the Cape Fear arena in Fayetteville, NC.
Deep Purple, Steppenwolf and Leon Russell.
Deep Purple opened the show and blew everybody away. The crowd's energy and emotions were so drained after their two hour show that the promoters announced a 90 minute intermission before Steppenwolf would start their show so everyone could recuperate.

There are people who say that Led Zeppelin was better than Deep Purple. Well, those people compare Stairway to Heaven to Smoke on the Water. If they compared Stairway to Heaven to Child in Time instead, they would come to a different conclusion. And Ritchie Blackmore's guitar solo is legendary.

Child In Time -- intense and powerful music. In terms of technical ability, many people rank Led Zeppelin as #1. But, I'd put Deep Purple right there with them -- Blackmore on guitar, Lord on keyboards, Paice on drums, Gillan on vocals and Glover on bass are all supremely talented musicians.

Astonishing to think that, together with Sabbath, these guys defined whole genres of music, and 50 years later none of those three bands have been surpassed. Equalled, yes, rarely, but never surpassed.

Had there not been many line-up changes Deep Purple would have surpassed Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. But if we compare the best era of all three bands Deep Purple was the greatest. Ritchie Blackmore started the Neo classical style of playing and Jon Lord was the greatest Organ player and Ian Gillan the greatest or the first to Screech. But I listen all the three bands. It was the summer of 1989 and I was 13. My friends were all into the big 80s pop, hair metal, etc., so I was into that scene, too. I didn't know I had a choice. I didn't know what else existed, to be honest.
One day, my ex-stepfather (who was only very briefly in my life) was doing something in the garage, jamming to some music. Bored, I wandered in and asked what band he was listening to. He was incredulous that I was unfamiliar with the song that was playing. So, he sat me down on the concrete garage floor (felt cool on a hot day), put gigantic headphones over my ears and fired up his 8-track player.
From the opening second of Deep Purple's _Burn,_ I was hooked. Out poured the most powerful, transformative sounds I'd ever heard. The experience literally transfixed me. I had never heard anything like it, and it was magical.
I ended up listening to the entire 8-track in one session, without ever getting up from that concrete floor. Through every lineup and stylistic change, I've been happily hooked on Deep Purple ever since.

Dickinson chose Gillan as his rock god in the latest episode of the BBC’s Rock Show with Johnny Walker, describing his first encounter with Deep Purple’s music.
“There I was as a young spotty teenager … and there was this noise coming through somebody's door,” he said. “And I opened it and I went, ‘What on earth is that?’ And it was ‘Speed King’ by Deep Purple off Deep Purple In Rock. And that was what got me started.”

I was over at a friends house and he played the whole "Machine Head" album and we got high and listened to the album 10 times in a row...My life was altered then and there..I found that I was obsessed with the band, and finally got enough money to buy my own album....I found "In Rock" after that and went on to devour anything Deep Purple released...This is when I discovered the magic of music...How it could take me away from my current reality and transport me to a different space and time...Say what you will about which band is better, or which band is more talented or what have you. However, I think that there is no better or best in music...It is just what moves you and what speaks to your soul.

I always hate these discussions “X better than Y”. Music is a form of art. There is no competition in art. It is a relationship between the artist and the recipient or recipients vibing together as a group.
100m dash has a clearly defined goal and you can measure who is best in terms of who is arriving first. That’s a competition, it’s objective. Now let’s discuss who has the best running style…

I first saw Deep Purple in 1971 at the Mayfair Suite in Birmingham UK on the 'In Rock' tour. I was 17 and had just started work and used the money from my first pay cheque to buy the ticket for the show. They were absolutely fantastic, singer Ian Gillan became and is still my favourite male vocalist of all time and incidentally a great guy into the bargain. Bruce Dickinson of Maiden has also stated Ian is his favourite singer and both are now good friend's. Ritchie Blackmore is a guitar god, Jon Lord's (RIP) Hammond organ sound is what makes this band sound so different from contemporaries, Zeppelin and Sabbath. The powerhouse of Roger Glover and Ian Paice completed this Mark 2 and best line up. I retire in September and wouldn't have believed back then that almost 50 years later Purple would still be releasing album's, touring the world with Ian Gillan, Roger Glover and Ian Paice still 'rockin'. A new album, Whoosh is out very soon with a world tour to follow once thing's return to normal.

"Deep Purple In Rock" is THE pivotal album that marks the border between Brit-pop-rock and/or flower-power stuff and what was to become known as Hard Rock. The album that blew the flowers from the hair of the ones stuck in San Fransisco. Forget The Who, Kinks, The Animals. Even Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin were searching through left-overs from the Blues and trying to make something out of it. Deep Purple is THE source. The vestige, the source, the well where everything started. Forget "Stairway To Heaven". "Child In Time" is THE song that chimed-in a new era. Never before had a guitar solo sounded that impressive, that magical, that loud, that fast, that spectacular. Blackmore at his best. Hard Rock at its best. Never to be surpassed again, ever. Deep Purples organist, the classically trained Jon Lord, would plug his Hammond B3(or C3) organ into a Marshall guitar stack, instead of the traditional Lesley speaker, to get a grittier sound that could match the guitar sounds of Ritchie Blackmore . I actually began to wonder, when were you gonna get to Deep Purple, but better late than never.

After so many years since my brother, myself and the boy from neighbourhood - Dean, my best friend ever, (may he rest in peace) who introduced deep purple to us, use to have séance of listening deep purple seating on the floor around the gramophone, on vinyl record, hundreds and hundreds of times, I listened to child in time from beginning to the end again. The symbolism within the song is enormous, the prelude to the guitar solo its like somebody shooting with an automatic gun, let alone the actual solo where Ritchie is telling us a story from his heart, not even a single note wasted - every word /tune on its place. The end of the song.... apocalypse, end of the world. And so on and on, emotionally told story from their hearts. As they say music is international language no need for translation or finding the meaning of the song. A master peace which can rank with Beethoven's, Mozart's and all great composers works that will never die.

Ian Gillan had an epic rock voice. He also sang the role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar - Original Concept Recording (1970). If you're not familiar it's a Rock Opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. That would make for an excellent reaction. Much of the music is funky Rock, and of course the story is familiar to millions of people.

I often have musical dreams, and I've dreamt this song all the way through while it tears me up emotionally, just as it does in real life.
It's tragically timeless because it fits not only the Vietnam War, which was the inspiration, but also every war, every terrorist attack, every crazed shooting ever.
The screams are so intense and the raw
sound so fitting that even though it makes me cry, it's still a masterpiece that I can't help but listen to all the way through once it starts.

Keep in mind this album was released in 1970. Way ahead of its time in my opinion. I've been a DP fan since I was a little boy as the result of my older brother playing these incredible records throughout the early to late 1970's. I've also had the pleasure of seeing them in person back in the mid 1980's for the Perfect Strangers tour. Needless to say they brought the house down, literally. Hollywood Sportatorium in South Florida was closed soon after the DP concert as they found the walls and beams to have developed cracks due to the high decibel levels. I had a hard time hearing for a few days after also. Great band of the likes we may never see or hear again. RIP Jon Lord. P.S., you should do a reaction on DP's Fireball... talk about hard rock...

A masterpiece start to finish ! If you put this into musical context, Led Zep, Deep Purple, then Early Judas Priest , we can hear the voice, the power, and the scream as its developes in these early years where heavy metal was not even born yet. This is the foundation built by bands n people who had no idea and just followed their instincts.
It's pure and fresh and written as the path was in front of them. I love this, just imagine hearing this for the first time back in the day ! Holy Moly !
