Music will never be the same anymore. I believe inspirational music such as Pink Floyd will never be again. One of a kind. What I would give to hear new music that is as revolutionary as Pink Floyd.
You really shouldn't take the nasty comments too seriously. Probably some old asshole like me who takes the music of their youth way too seriously. This is the soundtrack of our lives, and brings back strong emotions about the most intense, deeply felt emotions of our lives. It does my heart good to see you guys hear it for the first time.

I love Floyd, but it's an erroneous argument. You have to judge the odds in relation to our species' existence, not the planet's. So, a hundred thousand years? Which still makes us lucky I guess.
Aside from Sistah's obviously awesome emotional reaction to the song, I love that you went through the lyrics the way you did and really got the context of it and what he was saying. You're right, it is incredibly poetic, but also incredibly dark and poignant. First time i heard this song was when I was about 10 years old and didn't understand a lick of it until I was much older. Shame, because it would have served as a stark warning. I can say with absolute surety at 53 years old today, that it's exactly what happens. When you're young time seems like a slow moving, never ending commodity. The older you get the faster it seems to move until one day, you're 53 watching a reaction video of a song you probably should have paid more attention to when you were 10. :)
I've heard that so much (time goes faster as you get older) I looked it up. And apparently science can explain it. It has something to do with the amount of "circadian rhythms" you "have under your belt" as you get older Look it up, it's not just "a feeling", time seems to move faster as you get older.

I'm 53 too. I thought it was cool rock music when I was a kid. It was 1980 I was 13. Now, it has become the story of my life. Now it makes me weep and hang my head at all of the time I wasted. I've been teaching for 20 years and look at my pupils now and think, you have no idea what you are facing. Put your phone down and live.
The Dark Side of the Moon is arguably one of the best albums ever to be recorded, but I also think it is the best produced album ever and we can thank Alan Parsons for that.
There are only a small handful of perfect albums out there. This is definitely one of them. Indian Summer by Carbon Leaf is another. 2112 (both sides) is as well
Please, many of them offer to listen ''Comfortably Numb'' without you specifying to listen to the version of the show version''UA-cam''; of the show''Pulse'';, so excited are they to share it with you. Obviously, the version is really good, but much shorter, and does not bring out the immense, colossal virtuosity of David Gilmour. A must for the ears, but wait until you see for the eyes. . . Phew!
Both are my favorite songs by them and i can never chose between them. I was so happy that they played both songs at the first concert i ever saw of them in 1988. "Wish you are here" is still my favorite album aswell.
There are times I can't listen to Time. Mid-40's and when I'm getting the "time is moving way too fast" blues, I cry when I hear it. I love this song - but can't always take it!

@@DB-hd2gj - The pulse version video of Comfortably Numb is one of the most stunning things I've ever seen and heard, and I have watched it at least a dozen times. The most incredibly beautiful version of the song, and the solos are just mindblowing! And the light show is truly breathtaking! OMG, what I wouldn't give if I could have seen that show live. The entire Pulse concert video (which is where the Live version of "Great Gig in the Sky" they reacted to comes from) is something I think every Pink Floyd fan, new or old, should find a way to add to your DVD collection. That way, you get the best available quality of both audio and video that can be had. And watch on nothing smaller than a 32" screen!
Syd's passing is the reason I even started listening to PF in the first place. I remember when they announced it on the news that he had died and I remember asking my mom about him and the band he was in called Pink Floyd, she said it was my dads favorite band. At the time I had a really bad relationship with my dad so I started listening to Pink Floyd and it's been a one way street from there. Today we have a great relationship and I owe it to the Floyd for bringing us closer together. Here's to you Syd, working wonders on people even from beyond the grave.
Without a doubt the most beautiful moments on any album. Time into Breathe Reprise and then into The Great Gig in the Sky. After decades I cannot listen to one without the others. How lucky am I to have discovered this band when I was like 13 years old?
You cant listen to one without the other, but you cant listen to those two together without hearing the one before and after them as well. The album runs out of songs before you have even realised you've listened to it all the way through. That is why it is the best album of all time😆
To the people commenting on mine. I get it. Clare Torry CLEARLY co-wrote TGGINTS. However, that was the zeitgeist for session singers back then. Thankfully, she is now handsomely recompensed for this work of non-lexical vocal genius and every member of PF acknowledges it. Her poor pay and lack of recognition was not down to the group; they were blown away by her performance. It was down to the record company.
I love this version because she literally sounds like she's in pain at one point. Like how can you do that and still sound so beautiful and powerful? As well as the ending, I found that the be the most impactful part for me, she just sounds so fragile and sad but at the same time accepting. It takes a true talent to be able to convey those emotions without using words :)

My wife of 40 years still cries at every Pink Floyd concert we hit, they transcend time and genres. It's an emotional experience, glad your beautiful wife felt the call i her soul.
I've listened to Pink Floyd all my life, because my parents did. I have 4 Pink Floyd vinyl albums, including Dark Side. But omg...you had me wiping tears and blowing my nose by the end of Time. I never felt the song like this reaction because I always heard it. I swear Time never made me emotional until tonight. This was beyond moving.

Honestly my biggest fear is the concept of time, mainly thanks to this masterful creation from Pink Floyd. Time doesn't stop, but we do and we procrastinate and like the lyrics paraphrase, before you know 10 years are gone and you've done nothing. I don't like to think of time too often, because it gets too depressing and too overwhelming. I think Time is the best Pink Floyd song, it's the most impactful to me at least.

Here is an old man's perspective. Hehe. First of all, music is like food. We like what we like & there is no right or wrong. Second, most people are "imprinted" by the original of any popular music... and our brains "want" the first version which is fixed in our brain. (That's also why most want bands to perform their songs EXACTLY as they were originally done.) All that aside, I enjoy seeing your joy in "discovering" Pink Floyd. Keep the tears coming. :-)
It is great to watch and hear young generation reacting to one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever ever existed. To me, PF is always on one side and all the other greatest bands are on the other side, they are just very special in their creative music. I had privilege to see them in their 80’s tour in-door and out-door concerts in LA (The delicate sound of thunder), it was a dream come true. I wish they have continued together, we’ve could have more of that great magical innovative music. Nothing match up to their great era production with the winning formula of Water, Gilmour, Mason & Wright contribution.
This entire album is a long poem about life, death and transformation. It's meant to be listened to in it's entire form, one song directly blending into the next.
I think 23, maybe 24, and she improvised the whole vocal. She rather belatedly got the songwriting credit for the vocal composition. So she couldn't have heard it before, because she made it up on the spot - all she was given were the basic chord progressions. She also halted the third take part way through, and although others claim to have mixed parts of each take, she has always insisted that what they ended up with all came from the first.

Pink Floyd wrote my favorite lyric ever in Wish You Were Here. “We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year”. That lyric, for whatever reason has always stuck with me, make me tear up every time I hear it.
My favorite Pink Floyd lyric is from the track "Dogs" on the "Animals" album. "Who was broken by trained personnel". Gives me a chill every time I hear it.
@@YaoMing441 The whole Animals album is an underated masterpiece. I probably like Wish You Were Here just a little better, but IMO Animals is right up there with it. And Dogs is definitely my favorite song on Animals.

Yes and Roger is still really living his life passionately and is a very caring about the the state of the world and he fights for peace and justice and empathy. I have always thought Pink Floyd's albums are a form of Opera which take you through a whole range of your inner self with all of its existential twists and turns both beautiful and sad powerful and poignant. Dave Gilmore's guitar playing somehow expresses all of those words and feelings and lifts you to a higher plane of existence.
Waters left the group, then tried to sue them for money lost then is still crying about how his music is not linked with pink floyd anymore. He thought that he was bigger than the group I don't respect waters at all. He just wants money dosen't care about music anymore. I saw him in concert and I have seen pink floyd in the 90's. Waters was basically a little kid crying on stage after each song that he did by pink floyd saying I want to do it again. The only reason why is his name is worth thousands and pink floyd is millions.
Just watched your (beautifully) emotional reaction to Comfortably Numb, then I saw you had also done these two tracks too and I thought, oh, boy, she's going to feel an earthquake in her soul when she hears these two! The amazing lyrics of Time were written when these guys were in their early 20's and TGGITS vocals were done by Clare Torrey on the 2nd take. The band told her to just sing whatever came to her as she listened to the music and she sort of sang the 1st time and then let her heart and soul paint the 2nd take. x
I just watched your video and really enjoyed your reactions and commentary regarding Time and Great Gig in the Sky! I first got into this album and Pink Floyd in general as a freshman in high school in 1975. I totally appreciate your preference for the live track you referenced. But as a small point of clarity, the Clare Torry track is the original and everything else is a "version". When the track was recorded, she was a 25 year old session vocalist. She listened to the track minus vocals and was asked to improvise. Off of the top of her head, she performed 3 takes (individual performances) for this album and the final track was assembled from those 3 performances. The result of which is being discovered and discussed here on UA-cam 45 years later. I love it.

About those two songs I mentioned, Sister awake is pertinent to your journey, and the lyrics will speak to you. And no aphrodisiac is just a really tremendous song. Neither are metal though. I hope you both at least check them out even if you don't post a reaction.
The Whitlams are from my home Country of Australia. They are named after former Prime Minister of Australia Goff Whitlam. The song No Aphrodisiac is a great song that I think Sistah would like. It was a very popular song in Australia. Most reaction channels only react to one Aussie band and that is AC/DC. There are many more good ones like Powderfinger, Silverchair, INXS, Crowded House, Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Grinspoon, You am I and Regurgitator. Just to name a few. I know they are all rock bands and you are mostly a metal reaction channel but it is the first time I have seen someone else request an Aussie song that was not AC/DC.

Nothing beats Claire Torey on Great Gig......it was her first take, and unrehearsed. The live versions are good, but don't have the same raw emotion ( to me) of the struggle of iminent death, and final acceptance of it.
All right folks we need to kill this myth. It wasn't done in a single take, but a few perhaps 3 different takes, the first she did scat, because that was what she was used to doing. they told her no no no, think of death and dying and no scat, and she did another and they liked what she was doing. After a final take she told them I think you have enough and that was that, still impressive but let's keep the facts true. This is a long standing misconception. This is totally verifiable from Claire herself, look it up on youtube. I am running from memory so I don't even know if my description is wholly accurate but close enough, and for sure scat was her first attempt.

The "one take only" was on a piece with the Rolling Stones. That said, she did two, Pink Floyd mixed bits from both takes (but mostly the second), and Claire was sure she did catastrophically and she'd never hear back from them. The album went on to be the best selling ever.
Angel Gd Her third take yes, but it was one take; no overdubs, no cuts, just go and that was it. It was her first take knowing what the band wanted, and one whole cut.
I think the live version did it for you only for the fact that is was your first experience with the song, if you heard the the studio version first I believe it would have had the same impact, now you know how the rest of us feel when we hear the the live version because the majority of us heard the studio version 1st
The more I hear that live version the better I like it. The live version by Australian Pink Floyd, sung by Ola Bienkowska and Amy Smith is also excellent.

Now you know how I felt the first time I snuck into my sister's room as an 8 year old kid and put the headphones on and listen to this song and album for the first time. Remarkable reaction really gets to your soul deep down inside your soul and makes you think about life in general. This is why Pink Floyd is the greatest band of all times hands down
Good reaction to these two great songs by the Floyd, guys. Someone on this thread mentioned a GREAT Pink Floyd LIVE performance from 1971, "Echoes, pt. I", Live in Pompeii...bonus for the ladies - Dave Gilmour and Rick Wright are sporting 20-something shirtless bods as rock stars were wont to perform, back in the day.
The only thing is that Clare Torrey’s interpretation of the intention of what the song represents (impending death, denial, grief, and finally acceptance) was what made the song what it is. So all the recreations were just basically adding their own twist on it, and the live versions I’ve seen (and I’ve seen them twice in concert plus the dvds of other concerts), while powerful and moving, are just artists copying a song…Clare created that in two takes, then left. So that was pretty brilliant and iconic, just like David Gilmour’s solos are all iconic. Have you heard Shine on You Crazy Diamond yet? She will cry first sure at that one.

I’ve seen Britt Floyd and they use 3 singers for Gig in the Sky but once they had Ola Bienkowska sing alone and she blew the theatre away!!! It was perfect and like I said she sang the whole song herself! Check her out!
I do understand your reaction (although as like many others, I greatly prefer the studio version) but there's a couple of factors involved in this: 1) You listened to the live version first, so the first, greatest impact of listening to the song is never going to happen again because you already know the song, is not going to surprise you. 2) The "sound" of the live version is different, the mix is different, they add stuff to it, etc to make it maybe more grandiose for a huge stage like that. But on the other hand, you have to understand that everyone singing this song, are emulating Clare Torry. She basically composed what she sang right there in the spot (she actually is now credited as co-writer of the song, after winning a legal battle against Pink Floyd for it). So even if other singers sing it "better" for some people, they're still singing *her* song. I like both versions, and even like a version sang by Theresa Thompson with Dream Theater, but the original is just something special.
TheBlackiwid I don’t think they necessarily fought her over it initially, because they always considered it their song. I believe she got smart at some point and talked to a lawyer and decided to sue Pink Floyd over the rights and royalties. Gilmour is generally a very decent and fair guy ( I’ve read their story) and I think he didn’t like the fact she sued but was ok with the court rule in the end.
I appreciate your point about not being able to have the same authentic reaction to the original studio version after starting with the live version. Overall, I prefer Clare's vocals in the original; however, of the 3 separate vocal parts from the Pulse concert recording, I prefer the first singer slightly over Clare but Clare over the second and third singers. This is just personal preference and I don't wish to argue with anyone who disagrees with me. The point I would add however is that I greatly prefer the Pulse version regardless of the vocals not because it is a better version tonally or musically but because it is an enhanced version. The experience of listening to the original studio version is great but it can never match having the additional sensory input that you get with seeing the stage show along with hearing the audio even if the audio from the concert footage is slightly inferior to the studio original as some will argue. The panultimate would be to experience the concert live but unfortunately I missed the boat on that experience
Fun fact: If you have a really good stereo system with speakers with good imaging, you can tell that the clocks were set in a circle and they ring in a clockwise direction!
The good news is that after you have herd this music for the 102145th time, it will still affect you the same way. I'm 68 years old and have been listening to this since 1974, and i am right now sitting here crying right along with you. This music is simply beautiful. I don't mean this in a juvenile or creepy way, but it is best described as an eargasm. I'm no expert, but when Clare Torry is singing I can clearly hear the 5 stages of grief, denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance. did you pick-up on her saying "If you can hear this whispering you're dying".
@@Rwededyet the album version is definitely my favorite way to listen to it but the live version let's you get to see the band in their youthful prime. In my opinion, pre-DSOTM days were their more fascinating time as a band.
This is what I love about people like you doing reactions. You show absolute true, raw feelings and not ashamed to show them. Quick pointless thing to share with you, wheather you believe me or not is irrelevant, but my dad actually help set up the lasers for Pink Floyd back in the early 80s while on tour. A really proud moment for him. He has a few photos of them all together including my dad which is a real treasure.
You have to do Pink Floyd's music by the album. From Dark Side to The Final Cut are concept albums, thus its basically one song, telling a story as a whole.
If I remember rightly, Clare arrived at the studio and asked what they wanted her to do. They told her they wanted her to adlib, let her listen to what they had so far and she went straight in and did her interpretation and it was spot on. Difficult job. The ladies that followed had her example to lead them, again a difficult job because they will always be judged against the original.
Poets, philosophers, musicians of extraordinary caliber...not to mention the spectacular light shows for which they are renowned. How can we NOT be emotional in the face of all that? So glad you are discovering Pink Floyd. So many of us envy you, being able to hear this for the first time. It will never get old.
Thank you for being willing to open yourselves up to this music. Time is a song that I first heard as a teenager in the 70's, and I've come back to it over and over through the years. Each time it hits me harder, becomes more real and more pointed, feeling it harder. I'm 57 now, and it's hard to hear it without crying now. It encapsulates the feeling of life slipping away like no other. (I've thought about having the lines "the time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say" put on my gravestone.) Do check in with it in the future, you'll find it speaks to you in different ways as life goes on. As to this version of "Great Gig", the story is that Clare got pulled out of bed by a phone call in the middle of the night asking her to come record some vocals for Pink Floyd. She arrived (in curlers!) at the studio, they played some of what they had for her, and asked her to improvise around it. She did one take where she included words like "oh, baby" and such. Then they asked her to do another take without words, and she did what you just heard. Later, she said that she thought she'd messed up and they wouldn't use it, because all they said was "thanks very much for coming in". But what had really happened was they were so thunderstruck at what she'd given them that they didn't know what else to say, and they knew immediately that it would be the centerpiece of the album. It wasn't until the record came out and she got a copy that she realized they'd used her track. And thus a classic of progressive rock was created! To my ears, it's a song about the experience of death itself. The first third is the soul leaving the body, and all that tension in her voice is the pain of separation - thus that last near scream, and then the "oh" of release. The next third is softer, lighter, the soul floating above the body and seeing the world from this new perspective. (There's almost a sense of air moving, like the soul is discovering its new wings.) And then the last third is the soul looking up into the Great Light, being pulled away from the world into the ether, which is why the voice goes more and more distant and quiet, fading away into eternity. The great gig in the sky is about dealing with the death of a loved on (primarily a parent) and her singing brings you along for the ride on the stages of grief.

So my suggestion is please listen to Disturbed's studio version of The Sound of Silence. The accompanying video is starkly beautiful and powerful.

Aside from Sistah's obviously awesome emotional reaction to the song, I love that you went through the lyrics the way you did and really got the context of it and what he was saying. You're right, it is incredibly poetic, but also incredibly dark and poignant. First time i heard this song was when I was about 10 years old and didn't understand a lick of it until I was much older. Shame, because it would have served as a stark warning. I can say with absolute surety at 53 years old today, that it's exactly what happens. When you're young time seems like a slow moving, never ending commodity. The older you get the faster it seems to move until one day, you're 53 watching a reaction video of a song you probably should have paid more attention to when you were 10. :)

The Dark Side of the Moon is arguably one of the best albums ever to be recorded, but I also think it is the best produced album ever and we can thank Alan Parsons for that.

Both are my favorite songs by them and i can never chose between them. I was so happy that they played both songs at the first concert i ever saw of them in 1988. "Wish you are here" is still my favorite album aswell.

The most incredibly beautiful version of the song, and the solos are just mindblowing! And the light show is truly breathtaking! OMG, what I wouldn't give if I could have seen that show live.
The entire Pulse concert video (which is where the Live version of "Great Gig in the Sky" they reacted to comes from) is something I think every Pink Floyd fan, new or old, should find a way to add to your DVD collection. That way, you get the best available quality of both audio and video that can be had. And watch on nothing smaller than a 32" screen!

Syd's passing is the reason I even started listening to PF in the first place. I remember when they announced it on the news that he had died and I remember asking my mom about him and the band he was in called Pink Floyd, she said it was my dads favorite band. At the time I had a really bad relationship with my dad so I started listening to Pink Floyd and it's been a one way street from there. Today we have a great relationship and I owe it to the Floyd for bringing us closer together.

Without a doubt the most beautiful moments on any album. Time into Breathe Reprise and then into The Great Gig in the Sky. After decades I cannot listen to one without the others. How lucky am I to have discovered this band when I was like 13 years old?
You cant listen to one without the other, but you cant listen to those two together without hearing the one before and after them as well. The album runs out of songs before you have even realised you've listened to it all the way through. That is why it is the best album of all time😆

To the people commenting on mine. I get it. Clare Torry CLEARLY co-wrote TGGINTS. However, that was the zeitgeist for session singers back then. Thankfully, she is now handsomely recompensed for this work of non-lexical vocal genius and every member of PF acknowledges it. Her poor pay and lack of recognition was not down to the group; they were blown away by her performance. It was down to the record company.

I love this version because she literally sounds like she's in pain at one point. Like how can you do that and still sound so beautiful and powerful? As well as the ending, I found that the be the most impactful part for me, she just sounds so fragile and sad but at the same time accepting. It takes a true talent to be able to convey those emotions without using words :)

I've listened to Pink Floyd all my life, because my parents did. I have 4 Pink Floyd vinyl albums, including Dark Side. But omg...you had me wiping tears and blowing my nose by the end of Time. I never felt the song like this reaction because I always heard it. I swear Time never made me emotional until tonight. This was beyond moving.

Honestly my biggest fear is the concept of time, mainly thanks to this masterful creation from Pink Floyd. Time doesn't stop, but we do and we procrastinate and like the lyrics paraphrase, before you know 10 years are gone and you've done nothing. I don't like to think of time too often, because it gets too depressing and too overwhelming. I think Time is the best Pink Floyd song, it's the most impactful to me at least.

Here is an old man's perspective. Hehe. First of all, music is like food. We like what we like & there is no right or wrong. Second, most people are "imprinted" by the original of any popular music... and our brains "want" the first version which is fixed in our brain. (That's also why most want bands to perform their songs EXACTLY as they were originally done.)

It is great to watch and hear young generation reacting to one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever ever existed. To me, PF is always on one side and all the other greatest bands are on the other side, they are just very special in their creative music. I had privilege to see them in their 80’s tour in-door and out-door concerts in LA (The delicate sound of thunder), it was a dream come true. I wish they have continued together, we’ve could have more of that great magical innovative music. Nothing match up to their great era production with the winning formula of Water, Gilmour, Mason & Wright contribution.
There is a good reason this is one of the best albums of all time. It has had a profound impact on millions of people the last 40+ years.
This entire album is a long poem about life, death and transformation. It's meant to be listened to in it's entire form, one song directly blending into the next.

Clare was all of 21 or 22 when she did this track, also she did it cold in 3 takes never having heard it before.
I think 23, maybe 24, and she improvised the whole vocal. She rather belatedly got the songwriting credit for the vocal composition. So she couldn't have heard it before, because she made it up on the spot - all she was given were the basic chord progressions.
She also halted the third take part way through, and although others claim to have mixed parts of each take, she has always insisted that what they ended up with all came from the first.

And it's said she got like 35 dollars for doing the "Great gig in the sky" vocals ( union scale). She sued years later and won co-writing credits.
Pink Floyd wrote my favorite lyric ever in Wish You Were Here. “We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year”. That lyric, for whatever reason has always stuck with me, make me tear up every time I hear it.

Yes and Roger is still really living his life passionately and is a very caring about the the state of the world and he fights for peace and justice and empathy. I have always thought Pink Floyd's albums are a form of Opera which take you through a whole range of your inner self with all of its existential twists and turns both beautiful and sad powerful and poignant. Dave Gilmore's guitar playing somehow expresses all of those words and feelings and lifts you to a higher plane of existence.

Just watched your (beautifully) emotional reaction to Comfortably Numb, then I saw you had also done these two tracks too and I thought, oh, boy, she's going to feel an earthquake in her soul when she hears these two! The amazing lyrics of Time were written when these guys were in their early 20's and TGGITS vocals were done by Clare Torrey on the 2nd take. The band told her to just sing whatever came to her as she listened to the music and she sort of sang the 1st time and then let her heart and soul paint the 2nd take. x
I just watched your video and really enjoyed your reactions and commentary regarding Time and Great Gig in the Sky! I first got into this album and Pink Floyd in general as a freshman in high school in 1975. I totally appreciate your preference for the live track you referenced. But as a small point of clarity, the Clare Torry track is the original and everything else is a "version". When the track was recorded, she was a 25 year old session vocalist. She listened to the track minus vocals and was asked to improvise. Off of the top of her head, she performed 3 takes (individual performances) for this album and the final track was assembled from those 3 performances. The result of which is being discovered and discussed here on UA-cam 45 years later. I love it.

About those two songs I mentioned, Sister awake is pertinent to your journey, and the lyrics will speak to you. And no aphrodisiac is just a really tremendous song. Neither are metal though. I hope you both at least check them out even if you don't post a reaction.
The Whitlams are from my home Country of Australia. They are named after former Prime Minister of Australia Goff Whitlam. The song No Aphrodisiac is a great song that I think Sistah would like. It was a very popular song in Australia. Most reaction channels only react to one Aussie band and that is AC/DC. There are many more good ones like Powderfinger, Silverchair, INXS, Crowded House, Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Grinspoon, You am I and Regurgitator. Just to name a few. I know they are all rock bands and you are mostly a metal reaction channel but it is the first time I have seen someone else request an Aussie song that was not AC/DC.

Nothing beats Claire Torey on Great Gig......it was her first take, and unrehearsed. The live versions are good, but don't have the same raw emotion ( to me) of the struggle of iminent death, and final acceptance of it.
All right folks we need to kill this myth. It wasn't done in a single take, but a few perhaps 3 different takes, the first she did scat, because that was what she was used to doing. they told her no no no, think of death and dying and no scat, and she did another and they liked what she was doing. After a final take she told them I think you have enough and that was that, still impressive but let's keep the facts true. This is a long standing misconception. This is totally verifiable from Claire herself, look it up on youtube. I am running from memory so I don't even know if my description is wholly accurate but close enough, and for sure scat was her first attempt.

The "one take only" was on a piece with the Rolling Stones.
That said, she did two, Pink Floyd mixed bits from both takes (but mostly the second), and Claire was sure she did catastrophically and she'd never hear back from them.
The album went on to be the best selling ever.
Angel Gd Her third take yes, but it was one take; no overdubs, no cuts, just go and that was it. It was her first take knowing what the band wanted, and one whole cut.
I think the live version did it for you only for the fact that is was your first experience with the song, if you heard the the studio version first I believe it would have had the same impact, now you know how the rest of us feel when we hear the the live version because the majority of us heard the studio version 1st

I", Live in Pompeii...bonus for the ladies - Dave Gilmour and Rick Wright are sporting 20-something shirtless bods as rock stars were wont to perform, back in the day.
The live version impacted you more because it was the first time you heard it. This time you kinda knew what to expect. You guys are awesome!

The only thing is that Clare Torrey’s interpretation of the intention of what the song represents (impending death, denial, grief, and finally acceptance) was what made the song what it is. So all the recreations were just basically adding their own twist on it, and the live versions I’ve seen (and I’ve seen them twice in concert plus the dvds of other concerts), while powerful and moving, are just artists copying a song…Clare created that in two takes, then left. So that was pretty brilliant and iconic, just like David Gilmour’s solos are all iconic. Have you heard Shine on You Crazy Diamond yet? She will cry first sure at that one.

I do understand your reaction (although as like many others, I greatly prefer the studio version) but there's a couple of factors involved in this: 1) You listened to the live version first, so the first, greatest impact of listening to the song is never going to happen again because you already know the song, is not going to surprise you. 2) The "sound" of the live version is different, the mix is different, they add stuff to it, etc to make it maybe more grandiose for a huge stage like that.
But on the other hand, you have to understand that everyone singing this song, are emulating Clare Torry. She basically composed what she sang right there in the spot (she actually is now credited as co-writer of the song, after winning a legal battle against Pink Floyd for it). So even if other singers sing it "better" for some people, they're still singing *her* song.
I like both versions, and even like a version sang by Theresa Thompson with Dream Theater, but the original is just something special.
Just my opinion, but having three different singers live mimics how AP mixed the studio version.
TheBlackiwid I don’t think they necessarily fought her over it initially, because they always considered it their song. I believe she got smart at some point and talked to a lawyer and decided to sue Pink Floyd over the rights and royalties. Gilmour is generally a very decent and fair guy ( I’ve read their story) and I think he didn’t like the fact she sued but was ok with the court rule in the end.
I appreciate your point about not being able to have the same authentic reaction to the original studio version after starting with the live version. Overall, I prefer Clare's vocals in the original; however, of the 3 separate vocal parts from the Pulse concert recording, I prefer the first singer slightly over Clare but Clare over the second and third singers. This is just personal preference and I don't wish to argue with anyone who disagrees with me. The point I would add however is that I greatly prefer the Pulse version regardless of the vocals not because it is a better version tonally or musically but because it is an enhanced version. The experience of listening to the original studio version is great but it can never match having the additional sensory input that you get with seeing the stage show along with hearing the audio even if the audio from the concert footage is slightly inferior to the studio original as some will argue. The panultimate would be to experience the concert live but unfortunately I missed the boat on that experience
Fun fact: If you have a really good stereo system with speakers with good imaging, you can tell that the clocks were set in a circle and they ring in a clockwise direction!

The good news is that after you have herd this music for the 102145th time, it will still affect you the same way. I'm 68 years old and have been listening to this since 1974, and i am right now sitting here crying right along with you. This music is simply beautiful. I don't mean this in a juvenile or creepy way, but it is best described as an eargasm. I'm no expert, but when Clare Torry is singing I can clearly hear the 5 stages of grief, denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance. did you pick-up on her saying "If you can hear this whispering you're dying".
It all rings true i'm 64 I bought this album when I was a young lad.

@@Rwededyet the album version is definitely my favorite way to listen to it but the live version let's you get to see the band in their youthful prime. In my opinion, pre-DSOTM days were their more fascinating time as a band.

Pink Floyd is on another planet when it comes to music and their live versions reach to, yet, another planet.
This is what I love about people like you doing reactions. You show absolute true, raw feelings and not ashamed to show them. Quick pointless thing to share with you, wheather you believe me or not is irrelevant, but my dad actually help set up the lasers for Pink Floyd back in the early 80s while on tour. A really proud moment for him. He has a few photos of them all together including my dad which is a real treasure.
You have to do Pink Floyd's music by the album. From Dark Side to The Final Cut are concept albums, thus its basically one song, telling a story as a whole.
You should listen to "Us and them" or "Comfortably Numb"! Sistah will love it!!!
If I remember rightly, Clare arrived at the studio and asked what they wanted her to do. They told her they wanted her to adlib, let her listen to what they had so far and she went straight in and did her interpretation and it was spot on. Difficult job. The ladies that followed had her example to lead them, again a difficult job because they will always be judged against the original.
There is a UA-cam interview of Clare, in which they told her to play her voice like an instrument.
Poets, philosophers, musicians of extraordinary caliber...not to mention the spectacular light shows for which they are renowned. How can we NOT be emotional in the face of all that? So glad you are discovering Pink Floyd. So many of us envy you, being able to hear this for the first time. It will never get old.

Thank you for being willing to open yourselves up to this music. Time is a song that I first heard as a teenager in the 70's, and I've come back to it over and over through the years. Each time it hits me harder, becomes more real and more pointed, feeling it harder. I'm 57 now, and it's hard to hear it without crying now. It encapsulates the feeling of life slipping away like no other. (I've thought about having the lines "the time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say" put on my gravestone.) Do check in with it in the future, you'll find it speaks to you in different ways as life goes on.
As to this version of "Great Gig", the story is that Clare got pulled out of bed by a phone call in the middle of the night asking her to come record some vocals for Pink Floyd. She arrived (in curlers!) at the studio, they played some of what they had for her, and asked her to improvise around it. She did one take where she included words like "oh, baby" and such. Then they asked her to do another take without words, and she did what you just heard. Later, she said that she thought she'd messed up and they wouldn't use it, because all they said was "thanks very much for coming in". But what had really happened was they were so thunderstruck at what she'd given them that they didn't know what else to say, and they knew immediately that it would be the centerpiece of the album. It wasn't until the record came out and she got a copy that she realized they'd used her track. And thus a classic of progressive rock was created!
To my ears, it's a song about the experience of death itself. The first third is the soul leaving the body, and all that tension in her voice is the pain of separation - thus that last near scream, and then the "oh" of release. The next third is softer, lighter, the soul floating above the body and seeing the world from this new perspective. (There's almost a sense of air moving, like the soul is discovering its new wings.) And then the last third is the soul looking up into the Great Light, being pulled away from the world into the ether, which is why the voice goes more and more distant and quiet, fading away into eternity. At least, that's my take. :)
