  • Gear Review | Somewnhere along the way motorcycle gear, a requirement for our safety, stopped being affordable. Even what we would consider "low end" gear, has become expensive. And at the same time, "premium" gear has gotten almost absurd in its pricing. While workshopping some ideas for a video, I realized... I own exactly one piece of premium gear. Was it worth buying? - Frank

I was in the same boat about the purchase of the Carlsbad gear. Finally, a year after looking at it, the owner of a local motorcycle shop had a bike night and put all riding gear on the racks on sale at 30% off! As he rang up my purchase he told me "it's the last gear you will ever buy". I wasn't sure if it was referring to the quality of the gear or to my age? LOL!
That's the most expensive jacket and pants I've ever purchased.

30% off was a great deal! Most I have seen is 10%.

Got hosed in New England 7 out of 9 days last fall. Very glad to have had the Carlsbad .They do not leak. Too hot for me in the Summer though. Just completed a 12 day trip to Nova Scotia and the Klim Induction was perfect especially when the heat dome caught up to me. But fall and winter in Md the Carlsbad is wonderful. Agree with you 100%

I like the colors on your jacket. Mine was $540 when I got it. I felt fortunate to get it during the plague. With regard to treating the jacket, it isn’t required to maintain its ability to keep you dry. The DWR treatment minimizes the water absorbed by the shell when it is raining and the jacket stays closer to its dry weight. It’s already a heavy jacket to begin with. The goretex laminate is what actually keeps you dry. My jacket is in like new condition despite being nearly 4 years old and wearing it for nearly 50,000 miles of riding. I wash it several times a year and reapply the DWR coating suggested by Klim.

I've been really happy with my Tourmaster Intake jacket in combination with a waterproof overjacket. Combined they cost me $325 CAD and I really like the layered approach.

Central Oregon (Bend,Redmond) means months of snow/ice not much rain. Good review on the jacket Frank, is that a new one? It looks so spotless and unstained; I actually like the colors. Tim is an unlimited source of ADV tricks and knowledge, and a darn nice guy.

Like you, I always do my research before spending my hard earned cash. I debated for over a year, before purchasing my Carlsbad, two years ago.
Craig Ripley from Living Off The Slab, did a good video on cleaning and waterproofing his Klim Lattitude.

Rob!! I fully understand being an AZ desert rat. I do get Klim if it's second hand and great shape. It does have a quality feel about it.

Got mine about three months ago, long story on oregon weather and when gear fails, so far fit and breatability has been great in grey. Planning on getting the kidney belt for it. Also looking into an over the riding geat rain option for the worst case down pours. Great vids😎

It's a painful purchase, but it's one I am still very satisfied with. Holding up very well. I have a Nelson Rigg rain jacket I keep on the bike when I am not expecting rain on local rides. Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank

Thanks for your opinion on the Jacket. I’m in the market for new riding gear and I’m also very careful to buy such high priced gear. Greetings from Germany.

Hello Waredog, indeed. I would never consider skimping on sailing equipment! I was a fairly serious skier and white-water kayaker. Good gear will save you when your hobby is dangerous. Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank

Same same here … Spend a lot of money for my Klim Latitude pants. Just because my trusty old leather pants are just … well 20 years old. But when I rode in Norway during some day off - heaven opened it‘s gates and hell it poured down on me. Pants stayed dry to the bone . Now I need a better Jacket ..

It's worth it to me. I get rained on when the weather says sunny. And I feel safer at highway speeds. In SD I wore the armored shirt, but on the east coast... I want more between the road and me if I go down. - Frank
