Donna....bless you! Thank you for all the videos that you and your husband have made to show anyone that they can make a quilt. I love the Irish Chain quilt for many reason and you have inspired me to make one as my very first quilt (I will practice on a small table runner first). I must tell you that this summer my father passed away at the age of 94. I was depressed from the loss and also from taking care of him for over year seeing him decline but he went peacefully in the end. One day I was looking through UA-cam and came across your videos and began to watch them. It was like therapy...lol. You brought my spirits up and have encouraged me to get into quilting. Thank you very very much!

I love that you put Matt to work on camera! I find it tedious (not relaxing) sewing all those little squares so I would make strip sets and subcut. Can't wait to see the new shop. Keep up the great videos.

We will also do a video showing how to make the blocks with strip sets. It does save time that way.

  • @homecookteresagreen

You can also use the tube quilting method to make an Irish chain. Each sequence would be 1.5" color strip, 1.5" color strip, 2.5" background strip, 1.5 inch color strip, 1.5" color strip. Then sew the two sequences together to make the tube. Cut using the Strip Tube Ruler method. Form the squares to look like an Irish Chain. Like a double chain. I feel that this method saves cutting time.

This is SUCH a wonderful pattern to highlight even a half jelly roll (sometimes that's all you can find in the quilt shop: a "design roll" some call them). Add some spiffy reads-as-a-solid print for the background (like maybe Art Gallery Fabrics Pine Lullaby or Kaufman Artisan Batiks Patina Handpaints, both available at JordanFabrics.com !) , and you've got yourself a beautiful quilt - easy for beginners, but not plain or basic looking by any means. Thank you SO MUCH for your video with all the cutting and pressing tips, and the free pattern. Donna & Matt, you are both fabulous!! ~Diana K.

I enjoy your tutorials and learn a lot. I have made an Irish Chain. I cut my own 2 1/2" strips but jelly rolls would be so much easier. I made strip sets 2 dark and 1 light in the middle and some with 2 lights and a dark in the middle. It seems like this would be so much easier and faster than cutting all those 2 1/2" squares and putting each small square together.

Love all your quilts Donna, but this one is special for me as I’m from Ireland. I’ve collected a stack of fabric that I know will be wonderful. I also think I would love it with just 2 colours. Blue and white - my favourite choice. But a mix of pastels would be wonderful for a special 8 yr. girl that I’ve promised a quilt as a birthday present. Thank you for this tutorial. You are a wonderful teacher. 🤩🤩

I also have to thank you both for the cutting lessons. I am dealing with a shoulder injury and I just don't have the strength I need to hold my ruler steady. I am now using one of my weights on the ruler when cutting fabrics. Wow, what a difference it has made for me. It really has saved on my shoulder and my fabric. SINCERE THANKS!!!

Thanks for this great tutorial on how to make the Irish chain quilt because I didn't know how large I needed to cut the squares or how many patterns to choose. Your explanation looks easy to follow and I plan to make one but on a smaller scale, a lap quilt size. The 6 1/2 inch pieces will make the quilt a lot easier to sew than if the whole thing was the tiny squares so that is also helpful to know.

Love, love, love! Kansas Troubles is my all time favorite fabric (made my very 1st quilt using KT) - and with my stash of KT fabrics, this quilt pattern is absolutely perfect. I think I'll probably pick up the bundle you have available and add some of my KT fabrics from 10 years ago as well for even more variety. The quilting is beautiful.
