Pro Driver Breaks Down 18 Driving Scenes From Film & TV | WIRED

- Wyatt Knox, special projects director at the Team O'Neil Rally School, takes a look at driving scenes from a variety of television shows and movies and breaks down how accurate they really are. How did they make the bus jump off the bridge in Speed? Could they actually get to 88 miles-per-hour in a parking lot in Back to the Future? Can a sports car really drive through a building like in Furious 7?

Pro Driver Breaks Down 18 Driving Scenes From Film & TV | WIRED - Навчання та стиль
This guy has surprisingly wholesome energy
That's the nicest compliment I've ever heard
Reminds me of Aaron Paul
I agree!
Somehow reminds me a lot of Doctor Mike
What do you mean surprisingly??
This guy lives off adrenaline rushes dude 😂
Slightly disappointed with no Baby Driver or Mad Max, but amazing commentary as always
I was here for baby driver
yes mad max
I clicked for baby driver, but Mad Max/ John Wick woulda been good ones too. Why fast/furious twice and Skyscraper? Like what? Who cares?
Talladega Nights!
All I wanted was mad max. And baby driver. And john wick
Bring this guy back for more videos like you did with the voice coach dude. Would love to see him talk about more scenes that feature actual skillful driving, like Baby Driver, Mad Max, and classics like Bullitt
Yes, please do movies that have already been done to death.
@@xg3990 I honestly haven't seen pro drivers making commentaries on Mad Max and Bullitt, but please do enlighten me if you have any links.
Or the truck chase in t2
Check out the Team O'Neil Rally School channel for that. They go over and teach lots of technical driving skills in detail.
@@Slinderman48 That's cool and all but we want to see analyses about driving scenes in movies, not just videos about driving.
next: time traveler breaks down time travelling movie scenes.
That would be amazing
I'd love to see that
extraterrestrial breaks down movie depictions of aliens
You see this right here is pure fiction. Once you break the time barrier you have to be careful about shattering the multiverse or running into your past self. Really sloppy job in this movie and very unrealistic.
@John Titor
I think a martial artist critique of fight scenes in movies and shows would be pretty cool.
Did you see the one with RZA commenting on King Fu movies? It was pretty amazing lol
"I don't know _how_ he moved da NUTS..?
..
But he moved da NUTS."
Lmao best part of the video.
The problem with this is that there's already so much disagreement about what's effective in the martial arts community so no matter who they brought it would be controversial.
Check out Corridor Crew! They have a few stuntmen react videos
Check out Corridor Crew's 'Stunt men react' series!!
on chanel corridor crew there's a series with a stuntman Eric Linden. It's stuntman reacts.
"The Hummer H2, kinda the Canyonero in real life"
That cracked me up.
Gijs van Dam 😂
@daAnder71 the thing is that the Audi Q7 is a good car but the H2 is a pos similar to the Canyonero so he is very accurate with that comparison.
@daAnder71 they're fantastic family cars, i wouldn't call them too big at all, especially with a family of 4 or more, the tahoe we had and the expedition we currently have is perfect for road trips, loading up and going to the lake while towing the jetskis, and just being comfortable in general. idk if your family grew up with compact sedans like honda civics but its amazing as a full grown 6 foot adult to sit in the back and have similar leg room and head room to the front and even be able to recline the second the second row.
You can tell he's really digging watching these scenes. I love his obvious enthusiasm and delight about his topic. Makes me appreciate these scenes more.
This guy's teaching is really on the right pace and everything is right. Bring him more
He has a bunch of O'Neil rally school videos on youtube. He's a great instructor, I think.
Doubling the other guy, check out O'neil rally school's videos. very cool.
commuter bus magically lifts off and flies through the air
Pro Driver: "It's of course, fake"
He obviously doesn’t know his cars saying a suped up 300 would get dusted by a mustang
His reaction to the Simpsons bit is all I needed to fall in love with him
His face just lit up
So cute!
In the Dark Knight, they also added two big toothed "rockers" to the front grill, so that when the truck is flipping, it didn't teeter to one side or not. It just falls perfectly in the center of the road. They just CG them out, you can see the space between the front grill and the ground never change distance, it's a perfect roll.
That’s such a cool stunt. What’s funny is how obvious some of these are with the charges that I never noticed 😂. I’m going to google percent roll.
It makes me so anxious when they're having a conversation and not looking at the road, totally takes me out of the movie.
That absolutley realistic people always run there mouth you can tell especially when you can see the right side of the drivers face when behind them
@@tylercouture216 he meant the not looking at the road for prolonged periods of time, not the conversation part, dummy.
I know, I'm always screaming, "Look at the ROAD!"
I know! And sometimes they slightly “jerk” the wheel to look like they’re driving while looking directly at the person next to them.... every time I see it I always get taken out of the movie. Anytime I drive I look straight at the road when talking to any passengers in the car.
Best use of this tho was in Donnie Darko when the dad is driving him to the therapist and they almost hit grandma death.
You guys found a great expert for this one. Nobody wants to watch a full video of someone just being critical of movie stunts which is why I love his attitude here. He lets you know the reality of what would happen while still being enthusiastic about the stunts.
5:56 " Alright, so nobody definitely survived ^_^"
Lol.
That made me laugh to
His reaction to the Simpsons bit is all I needed to fall in love with him
Next: physicist reviewing science jargon and physics in movies
"Quantum"
They have done one about science in Marvel movies:
ua-cam.com/video/DuFyGHgGIKg/v-deo.html
Not the same channel but here's "Movie night with a physicist": ua-cam.com/video/FbPZgOwnH4U/v-deo.html
Do I get credit for spelling Physicist right the first try?
Just completed my bachelor in physics. Typically movies phrase things in a way that is unnecessarily more complicated than what it needs to be.
In "Drive", when he's in reverse they've still got the sound of the car working through the gears.
they do this is almost everything. Even the Senna docu. Its so stupid
lol you're right didn't notice it before
Listen closer. You can most definitely hear that tell-tale "whine" of the reverse gear.
"really cool ,but yeah everyone would of died"
summary of all clips
It would be great to see:
-John Wick
-Mad Max: Fury Road
-Captain America: The Winter Soldier
if you do another driving technique video!
Also Mission Impossible
I know the Bike scene in John Wick was done on a CGI rig. Real bikes and they were moving, but they weren't going like 100mph. Still a cool rig and a brilliant blend of CGI and practical effects.
civil war when winter soldier grabs the bike in the air
@@iVoldemortt, I can tell you right here & right now that it would never happen in real life. Saved your time.
@@iVoldemortt ua-cam.com/video/bAxmIxGXMOY/v-deo.html you're welcome.
Fantastic commentary, but seeing this in October of 2019, the very first thought in my mind was - Baby Driver. Can you please bring Wyatt back to analyze Baby Driver and Mad Max?
NO
All depends on if the studio lets them use the clips or not.
Why Mad Max? They are only driving in a straight line and a few dudes jump some dirtbikes.
Peter Griffin What? The crazy stunts, crashes, explosions, fights while driving, technicalities with the weights of the cars that could be explained for people that didn’t know about them, how the stunts are done etc. There are a lot of things to talk about with Mad Max. It would make for an interesting video.
There's gotta be stuff left for a part 2 man
I love the little edits that go along with what he's saying, nice little touches

i knew i should never have trusted miss frizzle...
I'd like to see one of these with a musician. Different instruments being played or even actors that don't normally sing singing.
Yes! Do you play?
2setviolin does this
Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line would definitely need to be in there
Drivers having conversations in movies always makes me feel so anxious. They keep looking back and not even paying attention to the road. Always feel like an accident is about to happen.
"Really cool! But, yeah, everyone would've died" xD
I love how he instantly pissed off every Mopar fan by saying a 5.0 can walk over a SRT8 300
PeRX haha I was about to be really disappointed if nobody in the comments said anything about it
Must be nice to get paid to speak falsehoods
As soon as I heard him say it I went straight to the comments looking for this comment.... my a$$ an srt8 cant catch up to a mousturd

@@PeRRXX even in the first gear Mustang will clap away
16:17 - VFX Artist here: it's not easy to make it with computers either, which is why you can usually tell when it's CGI (lots of physics involved, and usually not enough time)
As seen as soon as Gemini Man, when the physics of car/motorbike cg doesnt match, it looks beyond goofy.
Its cheaper, simpler, and overall looks better if you go practical with car stunts, most of the time.
Relatively easy*
A team of five animators working over the course of a month or two, versus the team of 50 to 100 people planning and setting up a couple dozen cars pyrotechnics and machines...
Bring this guy back!
Id like to see some discussion on car chases/real stunts such as: The Italian Job (the original), Gone is Sixty Seconds (the original), Bullitt, The Seven Ups, The French Connection, To Live and Die in LA, The Blues Brothers, Ronin, even Matrix Reloaded. The problem I have with modern chases like the Bourne series, Baby Driver and others, is all the quick jump cuts, closeups, cgi, shaky cam, tricks and cheats used to make the action seem more intense then just letting the action unfold in a long shot to see it play out. Real stunts real action.
"If you do need to off a jump with a car..." I like this guy's thinking!!!
Don't forget, it was a DeLorean with a *plutonium reactor* in the back.
But the nuclear reactor only powered the time circuits. The engine runs on regular old gasoline. It's a main plot point of the third film.
Yes, I'm that geek.
@@HermanVonPetri why do i remember him shoving a banana into the car as fuel then?
@@jimmyflores9235 Because they needed 1 Gigawatt to travel through time. The fusion reactor was for that. The engine ran on regular gas.
@@pmp1337 ah, thanks for the clarification 👌
What? Nooooo. It was a Mr. Fusion that ran off garbage. It was a fusion reactor by that description, which definitely does not ever use plutonium. Anything that uses fusion is WAY stronger than a fission reactor (which is the only type of reactor that would use plutonium).
No original Italian Job? Real stunts, real cars.
Not even the crappy remake, still featuring real cars.
the original gone in 60 seconds
@@everlastingmusic3835 you beat me to it
I would say they where trying to disprove impossible car stunts, why bring up probable driving stunts.
Wyatt Knox as a reviewer was great. Plenty more driving scenes for him to come back and review. You could really tell he enjoyed the process and it made for a really enjoyable presentation.
4:25 _"You'd ideally want a much longer stretch of road but conceivably, sure - he could get up to 88 & jump through time"_
Time travel confirmed.
Came here for Baby Driver, disappointed
Zviad Gorgiladze Emphatic agreement
Zviad Gorgiladze, Chedder or Vox I believe did a breakdown of Baby Drivers stunts. I’d check it out it’s good.
Corrider Crew just had a stunt guy on talking about the STi getaway scene as well
I came hoping not to see baby driver cuz I want to see some other movies older movies
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined
I've seen some of this guy's rally driving and he's pretty badass!
“Sure. He could get up to 88 and jump through time.” The tone.
Part of me _really_ wants to be in a car with this guy driving, and part of me _really_ doesn't!!
Not having the scene where Clark Griswold launches the “Wagon Queen Family Truckster” in Vacation is a glaring omission.
Otherwise, great list 👌🏻😜
Just sitting here watching this dude talk about driving, while i have no driving license yet
Best comment lol
This dude has the best explanations and commentary! Awesome energy, love this guy
5:30 Thanks for the tip! I will take initiative and add a skid plate to my SUV. I'll test it out this Christmas when I visit my parents in NYC. They're gonna LOVE off roading in Central Park in a suped up SUV during the holiday season.
It’s so weird seeing Wyatt in these lol. Go Team O’Neil 🔥🔥🔥
Right
yooo that’s so interesting! i love this series
Huge props for mentioning Strange Brew. Also, thanks for talking about the Dark Knight truck scene. I knew they used a rig for it but the other day I wondered if there were any way to actually make it happen. Figured the coupling between the truck and trailer would be an issue.
Awesome vid! Please do more of them - I'd love one walking through all Fast & Furious movies
"Short time", "the 7-ups" and "to live and die in L.A." have some of the most epic driving ever filmed.
The best part of this video could be “like a glove “ part, the one who edited it missed the best scene
Team o neil rally school has some of the best driving tips and videos out there, keep up the sick videos Wyatt! Personally a big fan of the "Will it rally" series :)
"You oughta know, you bought it" lmfao had me rollin
No Blues Brothers?
Oh well, guess they had to leave something for a part 2
7:44 Liiiiiike a glove!!
"Are you aiming for these people!!"
"No,maybe that mime." I love that line
14:12 spring loaded car launcher
I love all the safety and real world application tips he follows up most of these scenes with after giving his expertise.
Wyatt is the automotive version of Erik Singer and linguistics.
Both passionate, brilliant and eloquent in their fields. Need more of both these guys!
"That must have been cool. Just to be on set and watch that go down.
That's a real stunt, that's a real truck, doing a real flip."
I had wondered if that was CG or not.
"Hopscotch" with Walter Matthau had my favorite (and likely most realistic) oil slick.
Good video here, BTW!
Great vid, presenter and topic. The selections were also pretty awesome, wide range of movies. Hopefully a second part will come, so many more to cover!! Blues Brothers, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, The Car, basically take your pick of 70's car culture flicks...
Hearing him talk about differentials made me wish he'd react to Marisa Tomei's testimony in My Cousin Vinny.
5:41 "that mime" was a Wilhelm scream.
Excellent!! Thank you!!
I loved watching him watch the clips with adoration! Fun!
I wish someone looked at me the way he watches those movies!
Lol that's a good one also you look good i see it happening
Get a grip!
I wish HE looked at me that way!
Depends.. do you perform stunts that good?😁😁
I know its not relavent but are those your actual initials or are you a JBL fan? as a fan of pro wrestling I kinda have to ask.
That Bad Boys scene is cool, but Jackie Chan did that 20 years ago in a Mitsubishi Cordia.
Awww, I read the title as "Diver" for a second and got really excited :(
I would love to see an expert's critique on movies with SCUBA sequences, and what equipment is done right or wrong as well as safety protocols!
So happy he talked about Knight Rider! However, there are so many more incredible car stunts in that show that could have been discussed other than the oil slick. It was literally a show about a car doing crazy car stunt stuff
Lol its so funny when he compliments the stunts nd then aftwwards says in a straight 'but yea they definitely would have died'
11:50 Thank you for answering my long awaited question
I already knew all this stuff, but guy splains it all so well just couldn't tear my ears away.
The road they filmed back to the future on (in a studio backlot) was actually barely long enough and they had to use all of it, so they put up streetlights off the road into some bushes to make it look longer.
Shoutout team o neil rally school, clicked it the moment I say it was you.
My ex and a lot of his friends are/were drifters one of which happened to be the best in Australia and one of the best in the world. Going well over 200 km backwards into a corner and coming out entirely safe sound and at top speed is one of the most exhilarating things I’ve ever experienced. This having been often in an old Toyota Corolla aka a tin can or S13, S14 or very occasionally 15’s... if it was a hot day and your shoes souls were rubber you DID NOT want to put your feet on the floor as in order to go top speed and take a corner so tightly requires a vehicle to be as light as is humanly possible. Everything accept the absolute necessities in a car we’re removed.
I’ve also attended Matsuri in Japan’s (48 hr drift event) with some of the highest sponsored and most well known drifters in the world and trust me their cars DO NOT look anywhere near that fancy on the inside. Again they are stripped to bare minimum and made as light as possible to ensure the greatest amount of control over the vehicle.
Scariest thing I witnessed in Japan was children, toddlers etc. not strapped in at all and simply sitting on mum or dads lap whilst the car was being navigated around the most complicated and highest speed tracks. Terrifying!
that's pretty badass. Be careful out there
Well done. Loved Wyatt's Academy Awards style intro for the clips - Driving off a cliff: "Thelma and Louise"
This guy is tremendously great at explaining videos. Bring him back .
I thought the title said “Pro Diver” so I was so confused on to why there was a car there 😅😅
This is one of the most positive people ever haha, I love it
He is adorable. I loved it! MORE PLEASE!!
One of the best technique videos. Really fascinating. Although I would have liked to see The Italian Job.
Just want everyone to know the “suped” up version of the Chrysler 300 also know as the SRT8 (Street Race Technology V8) boasts a 6.4L Hemi V8 engine and would most certainly beat a 5.0 mustang in a race. I’m not sure what this guy is talking about
Lol mopar fans
Arnaj Sandhu Wet blanket statement.
Um, NO.
James England Um yes.
Got numbers?
You forgot the scene were Vin Diesel raises the Lykan hypersport, after saying its bullet proof
More Please!!! There is still so many good ones missing. Baby driver, mad Max to name only two
This guy has a good sense of humor, it makes the breakdowns even better!
Can you do a breakdown type interview with that law lady of the show Bluff City Law (or something like that)?
Head and neck trauma, back spasms.. You know.. "Silly things" haha
I am beyond stoked that they included strange brew into this list... 1 of all time favs.
Wyatt just seems like a really chill and cool guy
“In a modern car your not going to see a lot of exhaust flame”
*thinks about a 370z with antilag*
Not to be "that guy" but anti-lag only works when you're off throttle. It's not going to send a constant fireball out of the exhaust like in that movie clip.
I’m surprised he didn’t say anything about the RX7 as the rotary is known to do that.
first thing, if you mod a 370z enough to make it need antilag(hook up a turbo), then even a corolla can have exhaust flame
What about Blues Brothers, that seems feasable.
This was really entertaining!
Loved Tokyo drift so much. The explanation of the rest of the series makes me want to watch the rest now. I am not a fan of action movies normally but these build on each previous movie. Thanks so much for the excellent background info, so great to know these are not CGI .
Suggestions:
Army veteran reacts to Military scenes (altough I do not know how possible this one is, given PTSD situations that some veterans might go through. Could be achieved through their consent I think)
Physicist react to Science and physics in movies.
Martial artist reacts to fight scenes
Historian reacts to Scenes in historical movies. (pretty vague, since an expert historian would probably cover a specific period rather than History as a whole, but would love to give it a look)
Pyrotechnics expert reacts to movie explosions
Would loved to have seen baby driver and need for speed but I'm sure they're saving that for the next episode.
Editing on this one is bloody perfect 👌
I love this guys videos on his channel
This guy is great. Wish they had included a Baby Driver clip for him to review
Wyatt: "No vehicle is ever going to take this kind of abuse" (Hummer through drug shacks)
Treelon Musk: "Hold my beer!"
He’s so excited - it’s great!!
I love this kind of content !!!!!
Woah. This video reminded me F&F used to be about cars. Weird
Isnt the point of that scene in Drive is that he's being spun around and he doesnt want to anymore so he drives in reverse?
CAIB probably but it would’ve been much better to do a full a 360 and just as easy
In the dukes and hazards part you can also see how the suspension completely collapses and break
Love the series Dukes of Hazzerd, love the real road movies, like, Convoy, 2lane black top, Crasy Larry, Vanishing Point(71 version) the car etc etc
