I’m just thrilled that for the first time in like 20 years, a Lexus grille actually got SMALLER. Looks so much better!
Yes and it's about time! There have been times I wanted to buy a Lexus but when they kept that hideously large front grill it kept me from buying one. I will buy this Lexus later this year.
@@Rhaspun same. great cars, can't stand the grill.
ngl certain cars Lexus has stockholm syndrome'd me into liking like the LC500 grille is like a fully realized version of what the grille is trying to accomplish and failing to do on most Lexus models. Even then glad it's getting smaller felt like it was the last relic from the early/mid 2010s "stormtrooper helmet styling" epidemic that most design has shifted away from.
@@jadesded I think the head stylist for Lexus took his cue from Audi. Audi has some large front grills. But the guy in charge at Lexus took it to the max. He said he wanted the cars to look unique. Yeah make them unique. But make it attractive.
Or did the car around the grill get bigger 🤔 😂
Toyota really is smashing it at the moment, making stuff what people would actually want, not forcing ridiculous models with stupid features that are completely pointless.
Yea the bubble cam is going to be copied by every manufacturer FOR SURE
People complained for so long waiting for a new GX and cheaper Land Cruiser and they delivered both. I just want to see the new 4Runner now to see how it fits in.
Not with the elimination of the V8
Meh, the design definitely seemed like a downgrade to me. I mean just look at the J150 Prado, it's gorgeous. And then there's this, a knockoff Land Rover with what looks like a crappy Minecraft skin on it. Granted the interior is great, but the exterior... Yeah nah.

I don’t think it’s overstyled at all. I find it interesting that no comment was made about the new GX grill. It’s pretty damn handsome, modern, rugged & looks far better than the older ones. I have a ‘14 GX, which I love, but the predator grill is huge. For my money, there’s no way….in hell that I would actually purchase a Range/ Land Rover product or a ridiculous G-wagen. But some people don’t care about long term reliability.
It also seems like Doug didn’t do much research into this vehicle before his review.

Lexus knocked it out of the park as the looks are both form and function. It looks rugged but has intentional design changes from the old GX460 to make it more of an off-road vehicle (lower window sills, squared off dash, high bumper and radiator configuration, etc.). Doug has apparently owned several Land Rovers but seems clueless to these huge improvements.
@@makeyourmark00 Agreed! Doug missed some facts on this review. I’m shocked that he’s not in love with it. He also mentioned that the high points on the hood are simply for looks to a callback to old off-roaders to tell the driver where the wheels are, however they site-lines are perfect from the driver seat. Other reviewers have pointed this out.
Doug had 3 opportunities to say the correct amount of rectangles🤣
The surfacing, or “bulges” on the hood give you a reference point to your track width. As you learn the vehicle you can use this visual reference to place the wheels more accurately in an off road situation. It’s not to show you where the edge of the car is.
This thing is unbelievably fantastic. Toyota is playing hardball and I love it. One of these is definitely in my future.
Hey Doug...You completely missed the GX's towing attributes. Sure body on frame isn't "ideal" for a supple ride but it allows for 8000lbs and it has a built in brake controller. One of my major reasons for putting down a deposit on one.

@@September_V Akio Toyoda stepped down as President, but he’s not even close to out of the company- he’s still chairman of the board. In fact the reason he stepped down is because he felt he was too old fashioned and felt like someone else could more effectively usher in a new era for the company.
@@September_V Last I checked, Toyoda-san stepped down last year, not that long ago. New CEO, Koji Sato was also Lexus President under Toyoda-san before he took over Toyota. He gave it to someone who understands his vision, and he's still the chairman.
Hi Doug! I already watched this guy on your buddies channel Throttle House and after watching your video, the car only grows up on me. I think the design is truly superb and tough looking and despite it isn't as comfortable as some rivals, the looks in my opinion make the car a winner. I'm sure that if you own one of this, you are going to smile every time you get close. to it to take it for a ride. Other than that, not many cars have the fabulous off road capabilities of any of these Toyota group SUV's. Cooling center console box comes handy! You can put your phone there after it has overheated on the wireless charger 😂
Hahaha. I like my 4runners steel combination safe in the center console! That cooling box is just an added channel from the AC to the rear seat vents. I doubt it's efficiency.
Or you can cool your balls
@@johnb9045 I have the cooling box in my Land Cruiser. It works great.
Love the styling. I've avoided Lexus for 14 years because of that horrible spindle grill front ends and I've been driving 4Runners instead. Glad they finally listened to customers and improved the front end as well as the overall car.
The snake eyes for the brake lights on the dash is a cool throwback. I remember my grandpas 76 Cadillac eldarado had them above the rear window and you saw them in the rear view mirror to make sure your brake lights work
Doug is the kind of guy that points at 9 rectangles and says "6 rectangles".
It should've been 11 rectangles.
21:10 That's a Land Cruiser PRADO, the lightwight version of the full size Land Cruiser.
That nomenclature is market dependent
It's the Land Cruiser in the American market now
The Land Cruiser Prado is smaller than the regular Land Cruiser. We got the GX, which is the same platform as the Prado.
Yeah, depends on the market. Here in Europe the Prado/250 is the "regular Land Cruiser" and the 300 is the "big one".
Land Cruiser (90-120-150) Prado is not the same as the full size Land Cruiser (80-100-200-300). Same approach - frame based vehicle, but not related.
Great review Doug, I enjoyed eating my lunch to it, very concise and informative. I appreciate your honesty is suggesting an alternative based on if you don't need the 4x4 capabilities and harsh ride.
I was inspired to configure my own 24' Sequoia, I chose the Limited TRD pro, I chose the Terra colour to be unique with black artificial leather. The only option I wanted was a 2-5/16 trailer hitch for $68.83. All in, it cost me $98,631.41CDN
This took me back to last year when I was exploring 70s anime. Plus I love driving in the night on my Miata just enjoying the scenery with the top off while these play in the background
Thinking of this as my next car. We have a 2006 RX that's been in the family since 2005 and it just passed 210k miles. Lexus makes great cars.
Your 2006 RX is a great car With a powerful 3.5 L V6. To think that a car that weighs 3000 pounds more than your car and has a smaller engine with steroids powering it is a stupid idea.
The GX seems like a good step forward after the old one wasn’t update for a while!
Just a couple decades.
looks much better, finally something that doesn't look like a giant fish mouth
I’ll probably replace my old reliable ‘08 GX470 with this model. The GX460 never did anything for me since it was so much heavier and uglier. The failure of Toyota not offering the V-6 turbo in the new Land Cruiser is disappointing.
The 22 and 23 gx460 is nice if you want curves, all of the atrac and mts with a third row, the infotainment allows navigation and music to be split screened. Also has android auto and Apple carplay.
Don’t get scammed. GX is slow (Doug was being super polite), it is incredibly cramped and the parts and finishing is cheap. Pass!

I appreciate Toyota keeping the rear glass separate on real SUVs for all these years. Drives me crazy that's nit a standard thing in all hatchback vehicles. Makes it much easier to carry longer items.
And pack. My old 4 Door S10 Blazer had a separate glass, we would load bulky items into the hatch with the full gate open, close the gate and then open the glass and keep packing it up to the roof, then put whatever didn't fit inside on the roof. Packed a family of 4+ our dog into that thing for a week out camping when I was a kid. Did the same thing when it became mine.

I've seen a bunch of videos on the 2024 Lexus GX but I know Doug is going to show me many things all those other reviews missed!
I test-drove one yesterday (April 20, 2024) and felt the more truck-like vibe gives it character while the comfortable seats make any road imperfections felt through the chassis a non-issue. It's truck-like AND comfortable simultaneously, which should make it enjoyable to live with.
Honesty, this is a great interpretation of what the modern Land Cruiser always should have been. So happy Lexus decided to go with 18'' wheels and the bigger tires on this model. Just adds to the vintage look of a rugged off-roader. I can still remember the days with my 79 LC FJ40 and 15" wagon wheels on off-road tires. Just so appealing this modern day age of bigger wheels and tires.
YES!! Another 2024 car with a mechanical gear lever! Still love that car manufacturers (even luxury ones) still have thoughts about whether to use mechanical levers or those weird unorthodox button configurations most cars are utilizing.
The warning label on the wireless charger is to let you know that it can wipe your cards' chips and mag strips. One other example I can think of: Volvo doesn't have a warning sticker, but they have a notification in the infotainment system that pops up whenever you activate the wireless charger.
I love the indicator for the brake lights. especially with the new cruis control i want to know when the lights are on.
Looks like an awesome and capable truck! I look forward to seeing it in a Costco parking lot near me.
This is what Toyota Tahara makes. This is a twin turbo V6 4 runner / land cruiser. 4 runner, land cruiser & gx550 are all built in the legendary Tahara factory. They all have that body on frame driving charm but it’s not for everyone.
Would assume the main function of the brake light indicator in the dash is when you use the auto crawl control function it tells you when the car is braking?
My assessment is based on what I observed at the Auto Show in California. For comparing this SUV, I recommend examining others. To attend, both my wife and I had to pay a $30 fee, and I was particularly eager to personally see the Lexus GX due to the hype surrounding it as a large off-road SUV.
Before I outline the positives and negatives, I want to express my anticipation spanning decades for the GX to unveil a new design. However, I am disappointed with what I encountered.
Pros:
* The shape is commendable, featuring a perfect boxy design akin to competitors such as the Defender, Jeep Cherokee, and GMC.
* While the central infotainment system is not groundbreaking, it maintains consistency with other Lexus models, which is acceptable.
*
Cons:
* There are numerous drawbacks. The model I viewed exceeded $77k and lacked the ML sound system.
* The absence of a panoramic sunroof, now a standard feature in modern vehicles, detracts from the luxurious experience.
* The panoramic sunroof in the Luxury+ model is underwhelming and seems to mimic the idea from the Venza, which has been on the market for over six years.
* The quality of leather and interior falls short compared to other SUVs in the same price range. Even the Toyota Highlander boasts superior interior quality.
* The exterior feels excessively plastic, particularly upon contact with the bumper, hood, and other body panels.
* Leather quality across all trims is subpar.
* Fuel economy poses a significant issue in 2024, averaging only 17 mpg.
* Many materials exude a cheap feel, failing to deliver a luxurious experience.
* If one opts for all available options on the Lexus GX 550, it may be preferable to choose the LX 600, which offers a higher level of luxury and power.
* For a better depiction of luxury, consider examining the Infiniti QX80: ua-cam.com/video/NMzD7nLQlDY/v-deo.html
I've been a longtime enthusiast of this SUV, but now, even surpassing $80k plus tax, it's hardly worth the investment. In 2024, there's a myriad of alternative options I've contemplated, including the Ford F150 Electric, Rivian, Cybertruck, GMC Denali AT4, Sequoia, and the Volkswagen Atlas Off-Road version, among others, boasting advanced technology and commendable qualities.
Toyota and Lexus seem to be marketing very basic vehicles under the guise of reliability. Many individuals I conversed with at the auto show shared my sentiment that the GX 550 pales in comparison to the 460 in terms of quality, feeling cheaply constructed.
It appears that UA-cam influencers may be sponsored by Toyota and Lexus, with many Toyota dealers hyping these vehicles on social media to attract buyers.
This SUV no longer epitomizes luxury, not by a long shot. If you disregard reliability and juxtapose it against brands like BMW, Audi, and Land Rover, it's disheartening to witness its decline.
Purchasing this vehicle entails enduring it for another six years solely to mitigate depreciation, while numerous other automakers are already introducing superior and more advanced technology.
At present, I must explore alternative options, as this SUV is not worth $85k out of the door, if you're fortunate enough.
Best wishes with your new purchase. Just bear in mind, many individuals are compensated for endorsing Toyota and Lexus brands, and I've encountered numerous instances of Toyota dealers leveraging social media to generate interest in these vehicles.
In conclusion, this is merely my perspective. Enjoy your new purchase

Doug, the problem with your recommendations over gx (velar, x5, q5, etc) is that I would never buy any of these. Their depreciation is atrocious and reliability after warranty expires is questionable. The TX, sure, but that’s sacrificing too much cool factor for me and I don’t need a giant third row.

Even in comparison with its older enormous mouthed siblings.
I’ve been waiting for this for so long I’m gon get one for sure
I love it! Our family ride is a '18 GX460 and it's such a great truck. Dead reliable etc. my only disappointment here is I really like the "gate" rear door on the previous generation as opposed to the hatch on this one. By no means a deal breaker, really nice job from Toyota/Lexus here 👍
You aren't getting the "Land Crusier", you're getting what we in Australasia call the LC Prado as the Land Cruiser and Lexus GX has always been technically different. This GX actually shares the powertrain of the Land Crusier 300 Series on smaller platform, which I assumed you would know as you own a true Land Crusier in the 200 Series.
this is what people should realize lmao. the Land Cruiser 250 the Americans will get is actually the Land Cruiser Prado. The actual descendant of the Land Cruiser most people know is the 300 series, which wouldn't be sold in America.
He explains this he just doesn’t use the 300/200/prado nomenclature
He knows the 300 series exists because he reviewed an imported model and has previously stated his disappointment in it not being available in his market.
Doug does get stuff wrong in his videos frustratingly often, but this time it's more likely he didn't mention it to not overcomplicate things, since the 250 series LC Prado is simply called the LandCruiser in North America. This likely (or hopefully) _will_ come up when he eventually reviews the LandCruiser 250.
I love the way it looks. not cartoonish to me at all. Just needs another set of tires.
when are you doing to do full review of the cyber truck?
Does it drive and have a more comfortable ride than a ford F150? I think it’s a fair comparison, both have a 3.5 l twin turbo, 10 speed, body on frame, but this is fully AWD and it is independent rear suspension right?
Doug is literally the only reviewer that hasn't glowed over this thing. Throttle House said that it was a 10 out of 10 and that "they didn't f it up". The fact that you rate it below the Defender shows some implicit, unwarranted bias. For $20k less than the Defender you get more vehicle. More reliability, more capability (because you're not stuck with stupid small tire walls) and a better looking rig overall.
I'm sorry did you really put reliability & Defender in same room?? Lexus's go 300,000 miles At Least!
Better looking than a defender is rich. Also, the prices aren’t all that different, and you get so much more in terms of ride quality, performance (speed, handling, etc.), and luxury features. After all, 90% of your time driving is on the road.
Sure, Lexus is more reliable, but reliability isn’t the only important thing in a car. That interior is still extremely dated, the body-on-frame is mostly a cost saving measure (considering how few Lexuses actually go off road), and they’re woefully underpowered for the price.
It's not cartoony it's perfect styling
Compared to other cars on the market, it looks pretty normal to me 🤷♂️
Doug just hates Lexus.
We’ve waited like 20 years for SUVs to look like SUV, not egg shaped mom mobiles or lesbian toasters.
@@jrgb9945 the previous gen sold pretty well among men. It's about 60/40 male to female here in chicago and surrounding burbs.
Interior is a big disappointment tho! Zero styling cues from the exterior brought inside.
Missed quirk opportunity to talk about the sticker in the Cool Box that says “No fish and no meat” with icons.😃
Maybe those 2 red lights on the instrument cluster coinciding with the brake lights are to let you know that your brake lights are working? Like if they dissappear from the display you have a brake light out? Actually a good idea.
My 2023 Lexus has that weird bubble camera, but also changes to a different view that gradually pans around you and shows you what all the cameras are seeing. It's pretty much useless, but the overhead view accompanying the backup cam is pretty nice.
21:08 the editor is absolutely right, it is the Land Cruiser Prado that this new J250 LC is replacing not the 200 series Americans know and love. That 200 series was rather replaced by the 300 which Americans don't get but is sold around the world. Just see this as you getting the LC Prado in it's latest generation
Thats exactly what ive been saying since they announced "the new LC", americans get fooled and believe so anything so easy. The best thing is in my country we get all these Toyota SUVS, LC300, Prado, Fortuner and new Sequoia.
By the way: that climate concierge works fantastically! Worked at a Lexus dealership here in Germany a few years ago and all customers who got that told us that it was an absolute selling point for Lexus, so was the Mark Levinson sound system and the attention to detail
Doug can you please do the new Ineos Grenadier next? Love the channel!
The brawny exterior vibe reminded me of my 2004 V8 4Runner I had for many years
I assume brake lights on the dash in order to see when self driving features use the brakes
im really curious about one once they're available used. how low will the price go?
Do you have any plans to review the Ineos Grenadier? I got mine at the end of December and love it. I know that it would be right up your alley. Just please make sure that the one you review has the Safari windows. They are a must have option!!
I love this new GX, I think the styling is awesome and a big up for me is the fact that we can get massaging seats, in a Lexus product that is not a flagship. Awesome video Doug, but the person that edits these videos sometimes gets them wrong and it makes me laugh. Towards the end you mentioned the TX, and an RX was shown.
@Doug, those brake lights that appear on the driver-side screen are there to show you when your vehicle is braking when using radar cruise control but also the newer Lexus' have a new feature that slow the car down as you approach a slower vehicle even when you're not using cruise control. I bought a new Lexus and I noticed it because it started annoying me. After some research I found that out and immediately turned off that brake assist feature.
Does this car have comfortable seats? Or still there still short seats for the tights area?
You finally did a vid on a GX. Wish you did the 460!
