2024 Lexus GX | A Cautionary Tale: Choose Wisely

  • For the past two decades, the GX has served as the brand’s rugged, family 4X4 - the Lexus 4Runner, if you will. Originally equipped with a 4.7-liter V8 and 5-speed automatic, the GX 470 quickly earned the respect of SUV enthusiasts in the luxury realm. Flash ahead to the here and now, and Lexus has fully embraced the GX’s macho persona expressed through a decidedly boxier design emblematic of off-roaders from the past, such as the Land Cruiser which, not coincidentally, has also been reborn in the same rugged vein for Toyota as these two are both built upon a shared platform.

The TX and GX are completely different vehicles with different missions. The TX is a comfortable family hauler, cross-over. The GX is a true SUV with more capabilities than the TX. For example, 3500lb vs 9000lb of towing. Does your family have a boat or camper? Do you ever wonder off pavement? These are some of the essential questions a buyer should ask. A better comparison of the GX would be against other body on frame SUVs.

Steve Hammes is an honest car reviewer. All other reviewers are blatantly lying about the interior quality, interior noise, interior size. The interior quality belongs to a Toyota vehicle, the interior noise is awfully bad, and the interior size, particularly the second row has pathetically small head and leg room. Steve Hammes tells it straight. Good for him.

Was waiting for this review. Need to replace a Yukon, and I've been a GM truck driver for 40+ years. While the economy is disappointing, the versatile yet luxurious Overtrail version of this truck with out the third row checks a lot of boxes. I like the way you differentiated between "sport" SUVs and this. I would never take some of them to a job site or off-road, but that's my intent for this rig.

Lexus loyalists for the majority aren't interested in offroading. This will be for the niche land cruiser buyers who can't commit to a 4 cylinder hybrid that comes in the land cruiser and those who want more style and comfort. Not to mention the best resale and reliability on the market. If you care about none of that, well you can buy any bmw, audi, range rover. Or if you're my mom go buy a tx.

Lexus is smart. The released the TX first and then the GX. I really think this vehicle competes with the Range Rover and G-Wagon with its truck platform. I sat in the G-wagon around 10 years ago and was surprised how cramped it was. This GX is really a SUV for just four people.

    • @CeCullar
      @CeCullar 2 місяці тому

Agree, with both of you. The GX was never and still isn’t a family vehicle, 4 people max. I also don’t think it’s on par with a RR, BUT I do think it is fair competition for the Defender. JLR product reliability seems to be more hit or miss than Lexus ( I only say that b/c I have owned a JLR , and I was one of the unhappy customers) That being said the defender is nice to look at on the outside and does really well off road, the interior is VERY bland, the 550 also has a bold exterior and the interior is also very nice. I do wish Lexus would have kept the adjustable ride height. Is Lexus more reliable, guess I’ll find out.

Lexus use to be THE PINNACLE! and they use to separate themselves ENTIRELY from their Parent Company TOYOTA! and Lexus premium was well worth it....... crazy to see that Lexus is now pretty much getting secondary parts after Toyota gets it first....

This is going to sound like a that’s what she said, but where is the wood? Maybe it’s just because everything is black on the interior but it just seems all plastic fantastic, which depending on how much your paying and what your going for could be fine, but at $83K it’s looking a little stark inside. Nevertheless I’d take it over its European counterparts for the reliability and exterior styling. It looks great on the outside. Makes me nostalgic for the 90s/00s Landcruiser/LX/4Runner style.

The Sequoia is more practical and more comfortable than the GX. I've had many Lexuses before and to me this GX doesn't make sense. The exterior dimensions are bigger than prior gen but feels cramped inside and only makes sense for 4 people max. The Sequoia had much more room and comfort than I thought and has a usable third row with decent cargo space behind third row which I thought I would have hated but seeing it in person changed my mind.

The power options are too dated and slow imo to be considered luxury, they operate more like disability assistance tools. I'm in line for the OT, but I may hold off for the hybrid or the new 4runner redesign the more I think about it. If I am going to pay $50-80k cash for a vehicle, I need to feel like the value is there for the luxury. There's so much cost cutting with the lack of buttons, knobs, and dash. It doesn't feel like a fair deal, just "this is where the name sits in the price bracket, you pay this because we like arbitrary things".

Gotta love Steve’s honesty. I personally would love to buy a Lexus, but they all seem to be half baked these days. I really like what Genesis has going on, but I can’t bring myself to purchasing one either, mainly because of the dealership experiences I’ve heard about. Well, another BMW lease it is 😂.

Why not buy the bimer? Worried about “reliability”? Shit- Toyota done lease BMW’s, they hop in bed w/ em & do dirty tricks for em beg & plead “please pretty please BMW can you build us a sports car” - if Toyota thinks bmw is “reliable” enough to build them a new Supra halo car from

Hmm..a body on frame, off-road oriented SUV with durable materials, made to tow a sh*t ton somehow doesn’t handle like a sports car, nor is as smooth, quiet, and fuel efficient as a unibody cross-over? Maybe you’re looking at the wrong truck to begin with? 😅😅 There’s a reason why TX and RX are also in the lineup. Well produced review though.

3:50 True, but the TX looks like a total baby buggy. It looks like a women would drive it with kids in toe. If that's you then great. If your a MAN like me, i don't want that. I don't need that. I like rugged because I enjoy going off road, to camp and explore. Typical manly things. I have to stress that because of today's mentality but its true for me and many other men. Who actually are men. Its a stereotype but like most stereotypes they hold true for the most part. If you want comfort and quiet then yes go w/ a TX if you like the look and want capability go w/ the GX. Simple as that.

My 2 cents: Looked at both the TX & GX in person this weekend. Everyone is different. For me the styling of the GX is far superior. The TX reminds me of a modern minivan. It’s TOUGH to find a reliable, luxury, off road capable vehicle.
Our Jeep has 100% of the off road capabilities you could ever need in an apocalypse. The price… it’s loud. It’s bouncy. The headroom sucks. And the steering seems totally disconnected from earth. It’s still the only vehicle I’d take into the true wilderness. (But I’d have it airlifted there because I like my kidneys & hearing)
    Land Rover - Nightmare.
Land Cruiser - Excellent but not luxe.
New Bronco - Marginal off road. Typical Ford interior.
If you want Lexus luxury, reliability , great looks & decent… not Jeep level but better than a Bronco off road capabilities then the GX OverTrail is the best option available right now. Or trick out a Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

Lexus is going cheap these days the luxury plus and the F sport TX are both full of cheap plastic everywhere! Soft touch and fake leather are smoke and mirrors for Lexus to charge more. I couldn’t believe how cheap everything looked inside the TX people save your money and buy a Grand Highlander if you’re going this route. If your dead set on the GX keep in mind it’s not a real off-roader it has 8.9 inches of ground clearance on the OverTrail + with off-road tires , to give you perspective a new Toyota Prius has 8.0 inches of ground clearance with regular street tires 😅. It’s a damn shame you also can’t get three rows in the OverTrail .
