Pilot's having an emergency shouldn't have to provide Air Traffic Controllers with information. I had an electrical problem with faulty instrumentation and a depressurization. ATC started asking about the fuel and souls on board, and I told them to call Company, that we were busy.

The 320 on the parallel is no factor. 31L and 31R have good horizontal separation. 31R will never close and I bet 31L opened after a runway inspection. Emergencies like this happen all the time, the airport doesn’t automatically shut everything down.

Always amazes me that a departure roll happens within minutes of an emergency inbound operating on one engine. I get how busy JFK is but to create a wake turbulence and run the slight risk of a reject ahead of the inbound is baffling. But this is far from just a JFK quirk. Happens everywhere it seems.

The older pilot sounded like he’d had enough shit for one day.
When American 1722 asked to go straight if he had to go-around, and the controller was basically “nah, turn left” I’m assuming that’s because atc did not want an emergency aircraft heading straight towards downtown manhattan? In other words, it was a polite way of saying “you have 200 souls onboard, there’s a million people in nyc, get fucked”?

  • @paulie_di

He asked them if they needed to maintain 2,000 or if they could continue to climb. They indicated that they wanted to continue to climb. Pilots could have just said no if they thought that would be a problem at all. Climbing to 5,000 ft on a single engine isn't really a big deal for modern airliners, though. Going up to 5,000 ft gives them more safety margin if the other engine decided to quit later. 2,000 ft doesn't give you much reaction time (see also: Jeju Air and, especially for this particular departure, Sully's ditching in the Hudson.)

Except in this scenario they had two major airports close by, KJFK and KEWR, both with long runways and no high terrain, even surrounded by water in case of a ditching. The pilots declared Mayday, an emergency, so air traffic control should have put all other air traffic on standby, clear all surrounding airports and given AA flight 1722 the highest priority so the pilots could do whatever they needed to do to deal with the emergency.

Why fly at the minimum altitude and the altitude nearly every aircraft intercepting ILS at four major airports around you are using?
