  • Machiavellianism is characterised by being manipulative, duplicitous and having a willingness to deceive and exploit others for personal gain. The word comes from Italian philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli, who wrote the 'The Prince' in the 1500s, which encourages “the end justifies the means” behaviour. Someone who is machiavellian is cunning, sneaky and lacks a moral code.
    This podcast looks at Machiavellianism in the context of The Dark Tetrad, which also consists of psychopathy, narcissism and sadism, outlining the nature of Machiavellian behaviour in the context of the other three also co occuring.

    Thanks Darren for explaining these viscous, 'end game playing' sub-humans the way you do. I wish I knew this decades ago and am interested to learn more.

    Yes, a sibling who has poisoned our family, in several ways, over the years. And outsiders think: what a charming person.

      I have one of those in my family. Well, several, but the rest were all infected by the one. I'm often reminded of a joke from the show Everybody Loves Raymond. Someone meets Ray's maniac parents for the first time and afterwards says to Ray "They seem nice!" Ray unenthusiastically replies, "Yeah... they seem nice."

      "Such a lovely person to have such ungrateful children." Promises promises. Some I'm still waiting for. "One day", and "We'll see". That's nothing but a malicious liar as one day, you just realize. At least I never went over to the dark side. Because I have a conscious.

    Remember, the world is controlled by Dark Tetrad types. Beat them or join them, but never underestimate them. Unfortunately, those that know the danger these devils pose are too afraid of them to do anything about them. I confess... I'm one of those that is too afraid to do anything.
    There isn't a day that goes by where I don't desire to have a strong Dark Tertad personality. After all, they win, they take all, and they get away with it.

      Never join them. Would you really want to be a person who lacks the capacity for empathy? I don't see how anyone who has empathy would want to lose it. If you want to be able to not care about people because it would make things easier for you, then you kind of already don't. I know people (my own brother, for one) who have had children, knowing that to live lives that aren't miserable they'll have to devote themselves an evil institution. I don't see how a person can do that. When you're deciding to become a parent, don't you contemplate things like whether the happy and wonderful person that your child could become under the best circumstances would hate you for forcing them into what you know will be an ignominious existence?

      I'm not going to be the one to stop them, only the law or their own doings (karma) can stop them. Besides, after a lifetime plagued but them I have found the reason for it due to my mother's scapegoating but too late. I'm not young anymore and she has left me broke in all aspects of the word. She has committed the perfect crime and after six years trying to heal, I doubt I can make it although at first I thought it would be easier but the more I try to heal, the more I realized how damaged I am. Still, I don't envy them; I'm not a parasite.

      It depends on your priorities. Have you ever met a happy psycho? I've known quite a few, unfortunately. Not one of them was happy or content for longer than five minutes. They couldn't trust (even their own senses). They could only try control everything. Which is impossible.
      Protect yourself. Fight when you have to. But stop when it's enough. Prioritize your opinion of yourself before anything external. Fear is understandable, but face it and it will go away.
      You can't be scared or bitter or jealous, and be joyful, feel connected, & content at the same time.
      Being principled, and caring about others, doesn't mean you have to be a sucker or a scapegoat.
      Cheers.

    We've got a whole tribe of Machiavellian people in "our" government. I'd say they've infiltrated most previously-European countries as well.

    • @jumpinjohnnyruss
      @jumpinjohnnyruss 22 дні тому +1

      There are plenty in that "tribe" who aren't Machiavellian... they're mostly the ones whose ancestors survived the Holocaust through happenstance, though, rather than through cunning. Every population has Machiavellian people, but the proportions change when that population is culled. If they're in fact more Machiavellian than the average person, then I highly doubt that it's intrinsic to the "tribe".

    • @DockClock-rp2ro
      @DockClock-rp2ro 22 дні тому +1

      @@jumpinjohnnyrussYou just highlighted a clear selection-pressure that would cause a disproportion amount of these traits in their population.
      It goes beyond the single event too, but is a likely outcome from subsisting within other-groups and not assimilating for thousands of years.
      The ones that did not assimilate, kept their identity, their In-Group bias and thus the traits needed to maintain it (for the most part).
      But this goes for all populations.
      To say "not-all" is redundant.
      Everyone knows it's "not-all" for all populations and their trait distributions, but until we start effectively tracking and demonstrating traits in individuals (maybe using fMRI and PRS), we can only go by heuristic and observation.

      @@Lyrielonwind tough to tell. Maybe a narcopath, although not a real designation. It is apparently rare, for a narcissist to cross over into a psychopath. Perhaps, other than the aging, worsening narcissist, it’s mostly in stasis. Still, it at least felt like my mother and now my younger sister might be bridging that gap. I’m no expert, however. But, I saw with my mother and now with my sister, the starting of having mo fear of police. There’s cred to it, when they find the police may notice realize they’re being used to predate or that it’s hard to get arrested, for breaking and entering or stealing mail, in this current climate and for whatever is considered a domestic dispute. What ever it is my mother had, that my sister seems a far worse and sick version of, I want no parts of.

    We’re still using Machiavellian as a pejorative in the 21st century? I know this isn’t the point of the video but this interpretation of Machiavelli has been understood as a severe and somewhat intentional misrepresentation. The Oxford World Classics edition of “The Prince” has a phenomenal intro and footnotes explaining how and why these misinterpretations came to be. “The ends justify the means” is a gross error in translation and intent.

      What about the existence of hierarchies? If we all were the same, there wouldn't be any distinctions among us and among them.
