    The bugs launched a rock from the other side of the galaxy towards Earth as an act of war! I'm sure the bugs were initially targeting the dinosaurs since the rock was probably launched 30+ million years ago.

      Don't we see the asteroid going through a FTL gate?
      For all intents and purposes, even being "warped" from Klendathu space to Earth space would probably have taken a long time (but we don't see how long the ship was out - without FTL, it can take literally years to transmit information).
      Both the book and the flick however never were "science fiction", at least the book can be considered "humanities fiction" in that it explores Earth society after it is forced into a deadly conflict.

      @Mary-something: No, I am reporting you for libel.
      For the rest reading her comment: She makes a #NonSequitur in implying Heinlein's book was "fascist".
      Heinlein's book is dystopian, from the POV of characters *in* an authoritarian society. Heinlein was undoubtedly anti-communist, yet the teachers of Rico *use communist terminology* - a dead ringer the positive connotation the POV character feels is, like in Orwell's "1984" and other dystopies, not a representation of the opinion of the author.
      Heinlein's book shows the devastating, normalised effects of autoritarism because of the war much more than Verhoeven's flick does. His underlying message - pacifism and demilitarisation leading to totalitarianism - may be controversial, but is the exact opposite of "fascist".
      People with a modicum of knowledge in history know that this unwillingness to act accordingly after the so-called "Third Empire" attacked Poland led to the escalation of World War 2. Had the UK and France reacted upon the guarantees they gave Poland and defeated the "Third Empire" right from the start, the war would have been contained. As is, in the end, pacifist France gave the "Third Empire" the time to wrap up Poland, improve their armed forces, and then conquer France and send the UK across the channel in Dunkerque.
      Calling something "fascist" that warns of the exact thing that allowed fascist/national socialist Axis Powers to succed in controlling almost all of continental Europe is mere trolling. Nothing else.

    • @bruhb7611
      @bruhb7611 4 роки тому

      Ralf Hagen fascists co-opted tons of communist terminology to confuse the masses while using their funding from major capitalists to crush the socialists. That’s a characteristic especially notable in fascists dude.

    This is also canon. In the novel Federal service for citizenship is 100% voluntary and also discouraged by the Terran Federation. Also those fit to join and lacking "real skills" are either placed on dangerous jobs or are during boot camp weeded out by instructors from company size to platoon size in manpower. All to make sure only those few that in mind really put the greater good over selfish ideas such as "personal security" are able to vote.

      Indeed, that was the main point of the book. People who are willing to make sacrifices (including possible death,) for the good of the wider population are more likely to vote for policies that benefit the whole as opposed to personal benefit. Verhoven's failure to actually read the book left him blind to the fact that it was pro-military, not pro-war. There's a big difference.

      No, they didn't; they wore servo power armour suits and shot nuclear rockets from shoulder launchers. #Battletech Elementals, plus nukes minus eugenics come closest to "Mobile Infantry", or #WH40K Space Marines/Space Marine Terminators.
      The nomenclature is consistent with NATO nomenclature. There is IRL infantry, mounted infantry (Dragoons, now obsolete), motorised infantry (in APCs/lorries, like M113/BTRs) and mechanised infantry (in IFVs like the M2 Bradley /BMPs).
      So it's good sense to call a waldo-armoured SF extrapolation differently; "mobile" 's consistent with this NATO tactical nomenclature.
      Cameron' s "Colonial Marines" is organisational, not tactical.

    Great review! Starship Troopers is one of my favorite SciFi books, which I re-read every so often. The movies had NOTHING to do with the book, except some characters and the bugs, and I enjoy it for what it is (not criticize what it isn't). I also thought the actors and actresses greatly added to the enjoyment (I ALWAYS love Ironside, and even Busey added to the fun).
    As you say, the movie is popcorn entertainment, and well made with from that standpoint.

    The dialogue was purposely meant to be cheesy because the entire movie is a parody of plenty of cliches found in movies. The entire point of the movie is that you start off by taking it seriously but then start beginning to realize that you were voting for the wrong people the entire time because they are blindly killing the bugs with hatred based off of what the media has told them about them. It's fascism in a different form. Kinda like the way Nazis blindly treating Jews like they weren't people. If you closely pay attention to the movie you'll notice that the Arachnids only attack the people once they've begun firing at them on their home planet. Also the arachnids are never actually shown to want to take over other planets. Even when earth was attacked all you saw were explosions that was it. Almost as if it was all propaganda to encourage everyone to hate the Arachnids and Love hating them because they were celebrated for it. This is what fascism is. Convincing selfish people that they are the most important. The movie was meant to be satire. Look it up. Hope you found this interesting :)

It is about self sacrifice for your people and duty to your nation above personal gain. It is about the wealthy and the not wealthy working together for the good of each other in cooperative interest. Read Giovanni Gentile’s Short works on fascism.

    17:41- Dude, that brain-bug brain-sucking scene messed my brain up for a while when I first saw it as a kid. Also, just to clarify, Zander was already stabbed through the leg when pinned by the bugs, which is why he gave Carmen the knife.
    He knew his limp would make him too slow to escape even if he'd kept the blade to disable the brain-bug and free himself. Plus, he loves Carmen and deduced based on her shoulder-wound that she had better odds of survival than his.
    Yes, there's a tiny chance he could've also cut her free and the two could've made up for his limp by her helping him, but their speed would've been slowed regardless. Honestly, I found it the one noble moment in the plot for Zander's character.

    The book is considered required reading for the NCO corps. That is, a good NCO often suggests the new NCO being mentored should sit down and read the book. Paying close attention to things within the story such as the service itself. Not how it is structured, but how one is psychologically influenced to make the decisions for joining as seriously as possible. In fact, the first chapter deals with people being actively discouraged. This is to weed out people who just want to use federal service as a free ride. It sifts through and makes people either *want* it or *not want* it. There is no in between. You then are taught the significance of your decision and how your actions influence one another.
    The importance here, is the need for committing not only to the self but to the unit as a whole. You are as much a backbone as the others, but your responsibility is to others. Helping and mentoring them, but not letting yourself slack.
    The Books other major themes have influenced how the Military conducts business. And honestly, when considering the movie version, I see it as an episodic tale of Rico coming to understand that his service has very real effects. On himeself and on others. It teaches him the importance of what he does, but does not make him the true hero. He is simply the grunt which gives abbreviated leadership, and through those roles, he comes to understand his place within the larger system.

    • @StormsandSaugeye
      @StormsandSaugeye 8 місяців тому +1

      @moon-moth1 Actually, heinlen disagrees with you...
      When you read the book, it's clear from the outset that he was not critiquing the military but was instead criticizing what he saw as a weak foreign policy that resulted from elitism from people who never served in the military. He was a starch anti communist and actually believed that libertarian principles were the more beneficial route to take in the United States.
      You're thinking of the movie. Which was a critique of militarism.
      Writing in his 1980 volume Expanded Universe, Heinlein would say that the publication of a newspaper advertisement placed by the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy on April 5, 1958, calling for a unilateral suspension of nuclear weapons testing by the United States sparked his desire to write Starship Troopers. Heinlein and his wife Virginia created the "Patrick Henry League" in an attempt to create support for the US nuclear testing program. Heinlein stated that he used the novel to clarify his military and political views.
      In contrast to the others, Heinlein firmly endorsed the anti-communist sentiment of the Cold War era in his writing. Heinlein served in the US Navy for five years after graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1929. His experience in the military profoundly influenced his fiction.

    Verhoeven is a Dutch socialist, so I see why he hated the book. The book was very good. It seems fascist at first, but as you read through the book, Heinlein was attempting to describe/define a society that was liberally free, had few laws, no racism, was an economic powerhouse, free from corruption, and actually worked. He observed that in all democratic societies, the key has always been who gets to vote; and societies have always restricted the vote. In his fictional Citizens Federation, becoming a citizen was the only way to get a vote, and that was all it gave you: no special privileges. So there are a high percentage of people who were "civilians" (non-voting people). This doesn't prevent one from achieving success, as Rico's parents are civilians but are extremely wealthy. They do in fact look down on the citizens. But that is part of the key to why the society works. Only those who are willing put the needs of others ahead of their own, and work together as a team can gain the right to vote. Demagogues and con-men will get weeded out during the process. One doesn't HAVE to do military service, but it is the common way to gain citizenship. Most people don't make a career out the military; they do their 4 year stint and get out. Like our real life modern society only about 1-3% of the population actively serve.

    • @leonjean305
      @leonjean305 6 років тому +10

      Also, the federation is an actual federation, with multiple alien spieces being a part of it, it's just that the Skinnies and the Bugs, along with their ideologies, prevent them from wanting to join and puts them in conflict. It's even portrayed as sort of depressing that they have to fight.

    • @Raussl

      "no corruption" ...you could literally buy citizenship^^
      Heilein was indeed attempting to describe a "functioning" fascist soiciety...but none of the things you mentioned applied, neither in the book nor in reallity. The society he discribed was fictional, because all societies that tried implementing these fascist policies failed miserably in history from within and outside.

      You realize corruption is an indomitable force right no matter how you restrict voting rights and that’s the big problem if people have to be citizens to be in politics then they usually have to serve in the military meaning the military becomes politicized meaning people will scheme and plot their to the top to gain better political standing we have historical president for this because in Rome public office was restricted by your length of military service.

      The very idea of authoritarian government saying "agree or be stripped of the right to speak your mind" is basically why "them Frenchies ain't got no kings anymore" and the reason why US aren't going around conquering the whole continent is because capitalism work... Make money to live well and that's pretty much it! Peaceful cooperation and actual DIPLOMACY goes better WITH than WITHOUT the voting rights being available for all, not to mention "the whole freedom of speech" isn't a "bonus"... It's what gave their independence any legitimacy whatsoever to begin with. One side, you get the "Confederates" loosing their "slaving rights", but on the other side of the same coin... Barack Obama was president and Opra is a multi-billionaire business woman... Equality for all isn't an utopian pipe-dream anymore.
      Ps: I'm sure the book meant well, but reality is better at making dreams come true.

    Something that *needs* to be mentioned, and is referenced by Deker, is that in the book they had *power armor* with jetpacks, hence the name Mobile Infantry. The book is famous for being the first ever use power armored suits in sci fi. Iron Man, 40k, Fallout, and Halo, just to name a few, all get their power armor ideas from this book.

    Loved this review! Starship Troopers was my favourite movie as a kid, and it still remains today one of my favourite sci-fi films of all time, but I do agree with all the points you raised in this video. :)
    I'm also surprised though you didn't make note of what I always saw as a inconsistency error in this movie. Minor, yes, but regardless still a inconsistency error. During the scene you mention at 13:47, if you watch that scene again, that telecommunications guy who had his brains sucked out was still seated in the same chair he was when he made the call. Yet, if you look at the bug hole adjacent to him, it is both very deep and narrow. How in the hell did the Brain Bug fit through there and then wiggle its way up to suck this guys brains out? That part always bothered me, lol.

    I liked the movie, But as a bigger fan of the book, I sorely wish it wasn't a starship movie, since anyone who read the book can agree, the marauder suits were awesome.
    Also the entire idea about the militarizem is only slightly correct. to be come a citizen you need to join a federal service, which the book states is more than just the mobile infantry and navy. it also states than any job could potentially become a federal service with no small amount with of political pull, as in the galactic freighters. its a good read, and if you go into the book with a clean slate, then you can get quite a bit from the book
    in short, get both

    Funny that you should focus on the Rico-Carmen relationship. In a vital, deleted scene, you see Carmen embracing and kissing Rico after they celebrate the brainbug capture. It was met with ultimately hostile reactions by test screen audiences. Many of those having watched the original cut, wanted to kill Carmen. I blame Verhoeven for giving in to general emotions and deleting that pivotal scene.

    The point of the book was to try and find a system of government that could fight against communism without sacrificing the liberties of the people to something like Facism. The idea was that you had to do some form of service, could be military, could be janitorial work for the gov, for the common good to vote, but that's all it did for you, gave you the right to vote. That's it. Nothing else. Most people in the book actually looked down on people that wanted to become citizens, as it was seen as sort of like being "Holier-than-thou". It's a fantastic concept. Also, the biggest twist of the book, that Rico was a non-white filipino, is completely lost on any movie version, as it can't really portray just how shocking that was to the people of the 50s.

    Hay i can explain the electric igniter antennea.
    Its ancestors who lacked the spraying fuel, would use the antennea as a defence or cattle prod, kinda like electric eels, if you tried to eat it or something, it would jab you with it and zap you, with stuns you long enough for the bug to counter attack or escape.
    But given it limited range, they eventually developed the sprayer as range trumps melee for survivability.

    That psychic powers are real was a pretty broadly accepted SF trope at the time the book was written and up through the 70s, almost as much as "faster than light travel is easy": no real explanation needed. One of the main vectors of the infection was John W. Campbell, editor of "Astounding", who never met a crank theory he didn't like (Dianetics, flying saucers, homemade anti-gravity machines...)

    I think what's special about Starship Troopers is that it is a popcorn movie and a really intelligent satire on U.S. imperialism at the same time.
    I also find it striking how much this seems to be a satirical comment on the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan post 9/11 while being made 5 years before the fact.
    Most of the bugs are an absolutely amazing achievement of computer animation, they feel extremely kinetic and real in the way they can throw their bodies around, ridiculously terrifying... just the way they needed to be.
    Really too bad they made these terrible sequels that seem to miss this completely.

      One of the best scenes is,when Jake Busey asks the drill instructor,during knife training:''What's the point in training how to use a knife,when we can nuke a whole planet with the push of a button?'' After that the drill Sgt. throws the knife,impales his hand on the wall and responds:''If you can't use your hand,you can't push any buttons,soldier.'' Perfect description of ''military logic'' AKA ''don't ask any logic questions,do what you're told,even if the order doesn't make any sense.'' The fact,that the reviewer didn't mentionend,shows that he didn't get the movie at all.

    When I think about it the Society depicted in the book is actually far more similar to the US during the 19th century, than to a fascist dictatorship like Italy or Spain. It's a society where everyone has equal rights, except for suffrage.In a way it grants it's population much more freedom, since it has abandoned institutional sexism, racism and slavery. Suffrage is tied to military service which is not mandatory, but voluntary. You can still run for office, have your business, access to public goods if you don't volunteer or fail to qualify. This is very similar to the situation in the US before universal suffrage.
    The society of the book is also one that is under the very real threat of annihilation. The militaristic culture is the result of humanities constant war with the bugs, who are a much more formidable foe in the book, than in the movie.
    Given the style of warfare the book is truly visionary. Heinlein was enlisted in the Navy and engaged in aeronautical engineering during WW2. He envisioned surgical strikes, powered armor, space marines and a small military with highly trained soldiers.
    One thing that bothered me ... if Clendathu is 50.000 ly away from earth and they launch Asteroids to hit us, if we're generous and say they travel at 0,5c they'd need 100.000 years to reach us ... mhh.

    • @michaelcrawford146
      @michaelcrawford146 6 років тому +1

      Rubashow Heinlein wasn't enlisted in the Navy, he was appointed to the Naval Academy. He graduated from Annapolis in 1927 and served until he contracted tuberculosis. He was medically retired, and after several failed careers, started writing science fiction in 1939. He soon became one of the most prolific and inventive of science fiction writers, taking the genre from the pulps, to the slicks, to novels in hard covers. Starship Troopers was written to be published as the 13th novel in his popular series of juvenile novels for Scribners; his editor at Scribners rejected it, breaking the chain of options. Heinlein then took it to Putnam's, who published it immediately unchanged from Heinlein's manuscript. Putnam's became his publishers for the most productive period of his life, including for Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, and Time Enough for Love.

    Starship Troopers (the film) is really a satire about fascism and propaganda. The idea of big brother utopia where you're not allowed to vote unless you've served in the military. Sure, it's possible to see it as just a popcorn flick, but the film didn't just take the name of the book, it flipped the message right around. It's staggering how many people fail too see this. Case in point: Verhoeven himself said that Casper van Dien (Rico) totally bought into the (fake) fascist propaganda of the movie, and did not see the satire at all. Just a goddamn sci-fi action flick? Not when Paul Verhoeven is around. ;)

      Fascism didn't incorporate big brother mentality. Starship Troopers (film) is a dumbass adaptation from a dumbass director who couldn't read more than two chapters into a book which started off with an action scene. Really, the book's message could be and is left up to interpretation while the movie tries to act like it understands the concepts of National Socialism and Fascism but instead twists it into a retarded goddamn sci-fi action flick. Really, just read about an ideology before criticizing it.

  • @yves0010
    @yves0010 9 років тому +5

    A lot of the things you picked out were actually explained in the movie with throw away lines. Like how they know the asteroids are coming from the Bug Home world. They keep sending them constantly using the Plasma Bugs as de-orbital batteries to send them at Earth. Rico was saved by Rasczak as his Corporal says "Who do you think saved your ass!" It actually surprises me that they do try and answer some of the reasons things happen.
    Also, correct me if I am wrong but wasn't the book meant to be a satire of Ultra fascism? I have yet to read the book but last I checked, the author was very pro USA and wrote the book to make fun of fascism. Citation is in a documentary about how Sci Fi authors changed the world or predicted things... I think it is episode 4 which is about Robert A. Heinlein.

    • @ethanphilpot7643
      @ethanphilpot7643 6 років тому +1

      The book was actually very militaristic, going into extremely meticulate detail about the military organization and the government surrounding it. It does a great job of establishing setting but it bogs down any anti war message that it may have had (it's been years since I've read it but I do remember the book dedicating pages apon pages of expository fluff)
      Vaerhoven despised the book because he felt it had a pro war message, which struck a nerve with him because he experienced war firsthand as a child. So he literally turned it into 90210 with war hungry, Xenophobic, imperialist, fascists invading foreign planets.
      Both have their merits, though I prefer the movie as its message has actually gotten more relevant as time progressed

    I'm surprised how different it was from the book; I thought the Satire of the Over-Militarized Utopia was an intentional commentary made by the original book, in order to show how wrong the Federation is. Frankly this review made me realize some things; that we never truly learn if the Bugs are to blame for the destruction of Buenos Aries. What if all the Bugs were doing on Klendathu during the invasion, was just reasonable retaliation against an incoming invasion? Among all the Anti-Bug Propaganda, it probably came off as the Bugs actually DID want to kill us.
    Truth be told, I ALWAYS wanted there to be a Starship Troopers 4 - with the sequels, they began to explore just how corrupt the Federation was. I mean seriously; you get hanged for Protesting...In Starship Troopers 2, it gives the impression that the Federation WANTS the war, thereby confirming the theory that the Buenos Aries was just an excuse to begin such a war. Seriously; I want a movie where it's finally all out in the Open. Then Rico can go all Captain America and Winter Soldier the Federation, just like Cap did SHIELD.
    But no...The sequels kind of RUINED that opportunity, because the Third one establishes that YES...the Bugs want to wipe us out too.

    Just thought I'd let you know their is a fourth film in the series 'Starship Troopers: Invasion' and an animated series known as 'Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles' that attempt to tell a different story of how the events take place.
    In addition their is a reboot planned that promises to be more faithful :P

    Klendathu is on the opposite side of the galaxy from Earth. So even traveling at light speed, that meteor would have taken 100,000 years to reach Earth.

    I find it ironic that Aliens is a more faithful adaption of Starship Troopers than this movie. They both use basic BDUs and such, but the marine cast of Aliens were required to read Starship Troopers to get more into their roles.

    Actually Decker let me help clarify why Zanders gave her the knife. He knows one of them gonna die and if he acted then they’re both dead since they are pinned downed and are surrounded by millions of other bugs waiting to rip them to shreds. He sacrificed himself so Carmine can have a better chance to survive long enough for Rico to save her... either that or their Psychic friend told him to give her the knife.

    The asteroid which collided with the Roger Young due to Carmen's navigational error is the exact same one that destroyed Buenos Aires -- BECAUSE the collision knocked it out of its natural orbit and into an intercept course with the Earth. Unable to stop the catastrophe from occurring, the Federation Council blamed it on the bugs whom they were about to attack, anyway.

    I'd say either the Imperial Guard from Warhammer 40k were the inspiration for the starship troopers, or Vice Versa. I mean come on, the armor looks SO similar.

    So, like, how did the meteor get to Earth in a measurable amount of time? And how did the bugs have such good aim? And how did the collision with a ship not throw the rock off-course?

    It would have been interesting if Johnny Rico (real first name "Juan") had been played by a Filipino. Of course, Heinlein didn't reveal this in the novel until the last few paragraphs.

    while i love the movie it is absolutely unacceptable that the director didnt even put down enough effort to read more than 2 chapters just because his political view was different. sounds more like he was so insecure in his stance that he couldnt have any opposing views presented to him. honestly thats beyond pathetic and symptomatic for the hollywood elites.

    I get that my take on Starship Troopers (the book) is not a common one, but i totaly disagree that it romanticized the society it portrayed.
    Spoilers ahead, but i kinda need to venture the waters to make my points.
    In the book we start with a war agains an enemy that is by all means fascinating. They are not just "Spacebuggs" but their own highly evolved spiecies and society.
    But the war-forged society of earth cant see them for what they are. The society has blinded itself.
    We start at war, we end at war, the society dont realy achieve anything.
    The journey of the main character is not an epic tale of heroism, but rather the sad tale of someone who looses everything to a war that society cant comprehend or do anything about. First he looses his home due to the ineptitude the society has for defending itself (I mean earth has spaceships, massive weapon arrays, infantry equipped with nukes and so much more, and the enemy attacks earth successfully by tossing rocks at it? Realy? Home fleet cant blow up an asteroid?). He looses all his friends throughout the story, most of them through war, but some of them lose themselves in the organization, becoming people he no longer can recognice. And at the end he looses the last remnants of his family as his father joins his squad under him, subverting the Father/Son relationship into a Commander/Solder relationship.
    Basicly he goes from being Rico and becomes Anonymous Solder Nr. 427 (Just picked a number, not referencing the book)
    As we start the book the first enemy that are described are rebels, showing a drastic and dramatic split within humanity. Its not realy brought up again, but it sure as hell is still there.
    The army is stuck in its own self-glorification to the degree that they think they can win by just throwing bodies at the enemy, because the mentality is "Army, Fuck Yea!" much like Vietnam.
    I could go on, but it was a while ago i read the book, and would need to read it again for a longer analysis of it, but this was my feeling as i read through it the first time, and it was only strenghtended by a second read through.
    In essence, the book has an unreliable narrator, his views brainwached by the machinery of the organization he is a part of. Concider that we meet the narrator allready a part of said organization, and whatever views are shown of him Before he joins up are him reminiscing back.
    To me, its not a "Military, Fuck yea!" story, but rather a "Guys, look at this sad tale and tale heed from it" sort of thing.
    And yea, i have heard that Heinlein very much intended it to be a "Military, Fuck Yea!" story, but i have never heard or read him express that himself (Though he might have, just not heard it), and gogo Death of the Author. Whatever he meant as he was writing it counts for nothing, since we make the story our own.
    Just my perspective on it.

    I absolutely love this movie... except for all of the scenes containing Denise Richards from after she and Rico and Neil Patrick Harris join the Armed Services until about when she and Zander crash land into that cavern. In my opinion the movie would have been better without the Carmen scenes. It was with these scenes that ST crossed the line between campy to shitty. I have nothing against Denise Richards but I feel like the film could have easily been improved by writing her out and replacing her screen-time with a sub-plot about Karl. They could have totally expanded on the Psychic elements of the film and made it more than just some hamfisted sci-fi shit. They had Michael Ironside, Clancy Brown, Neil Patrick Harris and Jake Busey just sitting around and they didn't get half the screen-time Denise Richards got. Hell, I liked Jake Busey's character more than Denise Richards' in the first five seconds he appeared on screen ha ha
