I have to tell you that this video saved my day yesterday.. and I don't know how much to thank you for that.. I recently bought an old yamaha F200 and installed it on my boat. Did a few trial runs in a barrel of water before I put it for the trial. I did realise that I had a few issues and a weak relay too.. problem is that I live in Goa, India and to get a new relay would take me a few weeks. So yesterday I took the boat for the trial. And for some reason the engine stalled after just 2 mins.. by then I was in the middle of a big river and in a place where there aren't any boats no any help that can reach me.. so it was all up to this video and I managed to jump start the engine using a cable onto the faulty relay.. and that's how the engine came back and it actually saved me my day.. and for that I am grateful and thank you...... Glen

Thanks for the video, I have a 2012 Yamaha 150hp, the relay is actually on the port side next to the starter, so much easier. I didn't know what my problem was until I saw your video. Starting up everytime now.

Did you do a diagnostic and if so did the fault show up on it. I think I have this fault right now on my Yamaha 200 and was thinking of buying diagnostics to check before I spend the time on the work?

As always great instructional video. You have been guiding me along since the Marine Tech Tools days. Have you ever done a video on regulator/rectifier replacement? I think mine is intermittent. Good output for about an hour and then drops off until next engine start about 30 minutes later.

Hi Craig, we are in the process of filming a regulator rectifier/stator sequence for Yamaha HPDI. Hoping to have it up and running here shortly.

excellent tutorial and good steady hands, a dead cat for the mic will cut wind noise. new motors kinda make you want to invest in injection molded plastic futures LoL

Great video, quick question though. When you showed the two fails followed by the start, what was the click? Was it the bendix popping up into the flywheel?

When voltage/current is applied via the keyswitch, the contacts inside the relay move into place, making an audible clicking sound, as they close a separate circuit carrying voltage and current to the starter motor assembly. The contacts close when voltage is applied and open back up when voltage goes back to zero. When these relays fail especially when they are early stage/intermittent failure, they often will still audibly click shut, contacts/circuit close and may even register 12V, but they are damaged and the circuit has lost the capacity to handle the amperage required to actuate the starter assembly. In this situation, there's not even enough current being delivered to the starter motor assembly to twitch the bendix.

That make sense. I ask because I am having an intermittent issue with starting my F115 Yamaha. Every 2 to 3 starts the bendix will pop up like it is supposed to and either wait a couple seconds then spin the flywheel or just stay up and do nothing. I bypassed the relay like you did and it would start with no hesitation. Still haven’t checked the voltage to the key switch but that is next on the list

As always, love what you do and I am an OST customer But for the love of God man, invest in a LAV mic! (it's not just this vid that suffers )

Agreed. His tech skill is superb, but his video production skill needs a little polishing.
