    So after watching numerous videos of yours, I was confident that my brothers Merc outboard was not starting due to a repairable issue. We found that the stater was bad. In Northern Minnesota parts are hard to find right away, but the local Marine Store had one that fit. We replaced it and fished the rest of the week, trouble free! Thank you so much for doing what you do!!
    God Bless.

    I had just this sort of problem on my little boat and by using yours (and 1 other) youtubers channels I fixed it all my self. Turned out to be a solenoid problem. Did the job my self and saved a tonne of cash. Plus now I know how to diagnose a problem if I'm out at sea.

    2 past issues:
    1 - out this weekend - ran fine on the muffs, ran leaving the dock and around the no-wake, then suddenly quit. Starter worked fine but no start (plenty of fuel)...nice fisherman suggested the primer bulb (ta-da). Wasn't expecting on 225 opti
    2 - past summer, idling to the dock, knocked the kill switch stopped the motor. Tried a restart, nothing. Looked to be in neutral but was close, not there...prevented the restart

    6:49 went out today and used main motor for about 1/2 hour. Fished for 4 hours using bow mount. Time to go, main wouldn’t turn over. Got home, starter Ben fix kicks and engages but won’t spin flywheel. Can turn flywheel by hand. 2020 Mercury CT 115 with less than 100 hours stored inside.

    Just had that problem with one of my boats this weekend. The starter was busted. Tried to hot wire the starter but it was dead. The problem is that the starter is almost as expensive as the worth of the boat. So i just sold it as a project boat to another guy that going to strip it down an overhaul it. Thanks for a good video yet again.

    Not an outboard, but I had my fair share of starting issues on my old wakeboarding boat. First time out a wire on the neutral safety switch (which is mounted on top of the transmission under the ballast pumps and electronics -_-) finally corroded off. Found out after we stopped to enjoy a Pub sub at the sandbar. Used a wrench and a rag to jump the starter and get us back underway to the ramp.
    Second time on that boat ended up being a long drawn out ignition coil failure. I was chasing down issues with the motor falling on its face when giving it throttle (thinking it had to be fuel delivery and all the electronic sensors were just lying to me, I can be stubborn I guess lol), and a mid summer day I guess the ignition coil just got too hot while diagnosing and wouldn't even provide enough spark to start or idle.
    Ahhh, the joys of boating :)

    #OTC that would be a great tool that I don’t have yet. As for your video, I had an 1970 115 Evenrude, great motor once it was started but always having to mess with the starter. Would never head out without a screwdriver for jumping and a hammer for tapping. No matter how many times I replaced it or shimmed it there was always a problem. But I did love it once it was running. Plus it was my first boat. 1960 19’ Stamas. Good solid boat. Thumbs up Arron.

    If you don’t have a load tester , note the voltage at the battery , the battery while cranking or load test , and the voltage at the starter while cranking , good charged battery should not drop more than two volts , a proper size cable in good shape should have less than a voltage drop of more than one volt

    I was out on a bass boat that wasn’t mine about 10 years ago, and the thing started up just fine when I launched it, but after sitting anchored for several hours the starter just clicked when I was ready to leave. Luckily the starting and trolling batteries were all in like side by side. So I took the jumpers off the trolling batteries and wired all 4 to the starter. It worked and I got off the water. First stop on the way home was to pick up a all new batteries. They were like 7 years old. Not my boat, but I just can’t return something like that knowing it’s gonna leave the owner stranded.

    #otc. My bendix wouldn’t pop up to engage the flywheel at the inlet on Christmas Day, but I could still hear it spinning. I took the cowling off, pried up on it with the same wrench I use to put the boat plug in... while at the same time my brother held the key in the start position. Luckily the motor had already been running quite a bit that day and didn’t take many revolutions to start up.

    Problem with my boat? Litterally up the creek without a (decent) paddle. Father in law's recently purchased used trihull and we had worked out some issues and and decided it was ready to go fishing. We drove across the lake and up the river until it was a creek and then forked.....not enough water to go further so we dropped anchor and caught our limits of Trout. Time to head home and there were those darned CRICKETS when the key was turned.
    As I won't go on the water without a tool kit (and with the newly purchased boat a BIG tool kit) I was prepared. Problem ended up being the wiring to the starter solenoid so it was easy to jumper it and get us back to the dock.
    Thankfully I'm an auto and aircraft mechanic with decades of troubleshooting experience and knew right where to start and what to look for even without a manual.

    Anybody that is new to boating should have some basic tools on your boat.west Marina used to give you this hundred piece tool set that was in a little gray box. all you had to do was show them the paperwork that you just bought a boat.
    There's a few other things that does not come in that box that every boaters should have. A voltmeter is a godsend. If I had to pick one tool to have on board a voltmeter would be at. Electric tape comes in handy.whenever you do maintenance on your boat like changing spark plugs save the old ones if they're not in too bad of shape. It doesn't hurt to keep extra fuel filters either. Also WD-40 comes in handy.
    Another thing to look out for in a no start is your safety switch. I've seen guys work on their engines for hours just that have me come over and I hold the safety switch. I'm one of these people that if you are in trouble I'm going to try to help you. And if I cannot fix what's broke I always throw them back to where they came from no matter where it is.
    Back to keep being parts on board. Water pump impellers as another item you could keep as long as it's not that out of shape. I changed the one on my generator and kept the old one on board send it really wasn't in any bad shape. I change a lot of things on my boat every year to prevent problems.
    I remember on a memorial day weekend we were in a huge raft up. The boat that was tied up on the starboard side was having some issues with their generator. They had asked us could they put their food in our refrigerator since the generator wasn't working. I talked to the boat owner to find out what was the issue saying it was overheating and shutting down. I asked him when was the last time he change the propeller in the water pump for the generator. He looked at me like I was talking Chinese 😂. I asked him if he would mind if I took a look at it. Since we just met him and his wife he wasn't too sure. Some of the other people in the raft up knows me pretty well and I normally help them with anything that breaks. So I grabbed my tools and jump Right in. Sure enough it was his propeller for the water pump. I cleaned everything up and grabbed my used one that I had changed out the previous summer. It fit like a glove. He kept his generator on the entire weekend with no issues. He tried to get me money I don't need it and I won't accept it. I don't cost me a dime just a little time.
    I really enjoy your videos on here. I suggest that people who don't know much about boat motors pay attention to what you are telling them. I watch all of your videos just in case you show me something I did not know. As far as working on any type of motors there's always new technology out there. Sorry for such a long comment. There is just something I'm passionate about. I'm the same way with my Harley I keep tools in my saddlebags and in most cases I use it the fix other people's problem. Look forward to watching more of your videos.

    I am having trouble with my 1988 Mako 171. My Key switch all of a sudden lost power along with the trim / Tilt and all of my gauges. However the trim tilt works at the motor button, I get 12 V at multiple spots around the motor, Nav lights, GPS unit, and bilge so I know it's not the battery. I have checked all the fuses and done a few continuity tests around the motor like the neutral switch, and the relay (it jumps the motor) so I am definitely getting power there. I believe it to be the Key Switch to be faulty but not sure why that would lose power to the trim / tilt at the console. It could be a ground somewhere that I do not see. Any help would be amazing, if not no worries.

    About 3 years ago my dad's friend who had a 1988 evinrude 115 on his boat that would turn over but way to slow and would start smoking if you left they key on for my then 10 second. Turns out when he first set up the boat he didn't have enough wire to run to the starters so he spliced 2 smaller sections to get the length he needed. It worked at first but over time the wire became corridor. He changed the starter twice and check all the fuse and switch but couldn't figure it out. We got a fresh battery and some jumper cables and when right to the starter with it. Turn the key to the on position hit the starter with the juice from our spare battery and vuhala! Would have used a load tester to make things simple but I've never owned one looks to be a very useful tool! Would have one thank for the opportunity to win one in this contest #OTC.

    Question, my verado is having this very issue and the tilt/trim on the throttle control will not works as well. How would this be tied into the no start?

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  5 років тому

      With a Verado, it could be all kinds of variables. I would start with the battery and checking to make sure there is power getting to the engine, as well as clean power and making sure that the 5 Amp fuse it at the battery and not blown :) Hope this helps!

    • @johnnydean1052
      @johnnydean1052 5 років тому

      Born Again Boating Thanks for the reply. Plenty of voltage, all fuses are good. Only codes showing are communication errors. If I can find out how the tilt/trim and ignition are tied together on start I can narrow down the culprit. The control module, junction box and wire harness in the console has been changed. If you have any suggestions please share.
      Thanks again!!

    Turn key to accessory and turns power to everything. Turn key to start and nothing. Put it out of neutral and turn to accessory and fuel pump primes does not prime. Pull it back into neutral and fuel pump primes. My guess is the ignition switch.

    I took my problem (supposedly under warranty) to an authorized dealer for suzuki and got hosed big time. Everything else I had done under the same work order was incomplete or poorly done. The white wire on a suzuki is as important as everything else, a ten year old repower deserves a new rewire. The boat I own probably would not be mine if that happened. The source of most marine problems is 100% bad practices of dealerships, repair shops and the like. Born Again Boating is refreshing. If an authorized dealer says your current 10 year old wires are a bad idea for a repower trust them, if they say it is ok, go somewhere else. If you are in CT and have a suzuki, do not go to Atlantic Marine.

    Last February, I went to go push the start button for the starboard engine on my boat. The engine wouldn't turn over and made a clicking noise. Our mechanic checked it out and it was a bad starter. It was because the mechanic accidentally crimped the hoses during the 100 hour service and put in broken o rings. He admitted it and the starter was seized on both engines, including the port engine which started completely normal the first time. Because he admitted it, he said to take it over to his place and he'd give us new starters and new thermostats for free. #OTC

    Hay guys I’m going to be doing some fishing out of Venice la the inshore oil rigs here is my issue it’s about 30 mile run just to get out of the mighty Mississippi River that means 60 mile run just in the river going out and coming back in then another 30 miles of fishing lm looking at adding a 12 gallon above deck tank to go along with the the 30 gallons of fuel I normally carry here is my question can I put a ball value on the fuel line from the main fuel tank at my water separater and use the other inflow on the water separater for the auxiliary tank thank you for your time and maybe this would be a great topic for good old technicians Tuesday adding an auxiliary fuel tank thank you for your time sincerely George applegate

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  5 років тому +1

      Awesome! Yeah, you can put those valves on there on the filter bracket. Just make sure you put one on each tank. If you only have one and run the other down empty, it will allow the engine to suck air through that side and even with the other tank full. You will run out of fuel. So put two on for when you switch tanks, you can shut the one off and turn the other on!

    Hi, you helped with changing my thermostat on my Verado 150 Hp 2011 on a StarCraft 2012 246 , today I tried starting the motor and it would not turn making a "toc toc" low noise sound. I thought the battery is the problem so I put a charger on the battery but still the same problem after the charge... The last time I turned it "off" it was in forward gear and the properler was left in "gear" and would not turn. . Now it turns freely but still the same sound when trying to start it. Any ideas ?

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  4 роки тому

      Sounds like a power delivery issue, make sure the engine is getting power enough at the starter to carry the load of turning the starter, otherwise, the starter or start relay might have died on you!

    • @richardverville3893

      @@BornAgainBoating Turns out there are 2 batteries on the pontoon hooked up to a battery isolator. The alternator lug was corroded and I changed it . but that was not the problem (maybe). One battery had 12.8 volts and the other labelled "accessory battery" had 11.7 volts. I charged this last one and the motor was able to turn. Because of Winter in Quebec, we pull out batteries, I think the guy that sold me the pontoon inadvertly put the batteries in their wrong spot, in Spring. I will perform a "load test" on the battery tomorrow and check that the "isolator" is charging both batteries... I am surprised there are "no sounding alarms" at 11.7 volts and that the motor lift works fine (up and down) at that voltage.

    • @BornAgainBoating

      Yes, it won't stop the engine from turning over, but if the water separator has a rusted hole in it and is air leaking. Then engine can run out of fuel and not start!
