- In this video we look at how to diagnose and outboard motor that won't crank or turn over. Common causes are being in gear, the battery being flat, fuses being blown or bad electrical connections.

Welcome Back
Great to see you back (hopefully) and doing well. We all missed you badly!
Thanks Vin, I've been crazy busy (almost 7 days a week) at work but I'm really trying to make more time for videos. Hopefully things will settle down soon.
@@DangarMarine been same here, with moving from a 11 room house to an apartment complex (a temporary move due to our roof partially collapsing due to weight of snow). At least I still have a garage and a 'new' project: my 2 sons and I are going to convert an aluminum 14.9ft 'V' hull tower into a serious bass fishing rig over the summer. We plan on videoing each step.
@@DangarMarine Hi mate. I have a 2018 Yamaha 50hp 2 stroke with less than 20 hours on it.
The motor runs fine when ear muffs attached on land but when the motor is in the water, in FWD and i try to give it throttle it bogs down and won't go any faster than the "in gear" idle speed.
New fuel was put in the fuel tank.
Can you please give me some advice on what could cause this.
Hasn't been used for 2 years, could it be carby issue?
Good to see you and Eddie again!! (And yes, I am a bit late :)
I was as excited as Eddy when I got the notification that Stu had posted a video 🤣
Glad to see you back Stu!!!
I feel like Eddie, it's been sooo long... it's good to see you again Stu...
It's your fault that I own 7 outboards.
4 years ago when I started watching your channel I owned zero outboards.
I currently own 7 outboards, most of which didn't run when I bought them.
The correlation is undeniable.
Thanks for all the great videos!
About time you graduate to a boat to put them on then....😂
@@stevedotrsa forgot to mention I now have 3 of those too 🤪
As an electrician and electronics engineer I found your explanation of a multimeter being the equivalent of squatting over a hand mirror very enlightening !
Next time somebody asks for a detailed explanation of the fault diagnosis process I'll tell them that ! 😆
😅
Well, you know, it's a vague analogy. ;)
Welcome back, missed your videos.
Good to see your face again Stu!
The one I always ask people as soon I get the call (and you were right there with the neutral start) is the deadmans.
Awesome way of simply testing across a switch as well just measuring voltage.
I'm always perplexed why most (all?) motors will still crank with the tether out. It could save so many people so much time troubleshooting if it fully killed the electronics!
Yes, deadman's switch is a common no start problem, but as Jackons says below, it will still crank which can be misleading.
Really well explained. So many people panic about wiring when in reality, if you understand the principle, it’s pretty straightforward 😊
Thank Mick!
I have never been able to understand how electric works but after watching and listening to this video there is hope for me yet, very much appreciate your video's .Jack
Mate, we've missed you and Eddy - I'm glad to see again! Keep up the videos.
Good to see you back Stu! More outboard diagnosis videos.
Thanks mate, I do want to do more outboard videos to populate the new diagnosing website.
Good to see you again Stu, I just bough a desktop white board and drew up how to wire up a 12v winch with a solenoid and remote receiver. Folks love the simple but detailed view. My ignition switch on my boat sometimes needs the contacts cleaned for the motor to start. Mine is like a car on the dash not on the control. After cleaning contacts I put a little dielectric grease on them.
Sadly being landlocked I do not have an outboard, or even a boat, but the learning is good and it’s great to see you again Stu!
Thanks mate!
You can dream.
Great to see you back Stu! Made my Sunday. Now I have to go out and work on my pontoon which, is why I started watching you in the first place. I think of you every time I watch Doug on the Seeker.
Good luck with the pontoon!
Good to see you back Stu.
That reminds me some day, the kill switch was partly disengaged. It was not visually obvious and it took me some time before I realized why the engine was not starting!
THIS is the good old content everyone wants. Bringing older / not working outboards back to life. The steel boat ting is in the lower scale of okay-ness, but fixing and flipping outboard motors is golden. Please do 95% fixing outboards from now on? But what is up with his looks? No shaving and no haircut? What, is he becoming a Troll? Soon he will be living under the Dangar Island bridge.
Good to see you Stu. And the D squad. One thing i do when working on unfused high amp battery lines is disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect last. Otherwise that rachet the was used to connect the leads might end up channeling 12V into the hull if one is not careful. Not sure how many amps it takes to blow a ratchet.
So good to see you and Eddie again!
Eddie and me had the same reaction. Good to see you back.
Nice to watch another Dangar video. No rush with any next one, whenever you feel like it :D
Good to see ya Stuey.....but I missed Eddie and Daisy more. Cheers !
In this negative world, it's good to see a positive post.
It's hard to resist a Dangar video. Always amped to watch a current video from Stu.
Hey it's great to see you back Stu. I love learning about boats and motors here but also seeing bits about life "down under".
IT'S BACK!!!! Thank goodness! I actually understood and learned something about electrical working. Thank you, I guess. But now I have a headache and need a Scotch. THANK YOU FOR THAT TOO!
Yes, he’s back!
Good info. No one ever thinks to check that their battery disconnect/master switch is actually good, acting much like a loose battery terminal would. Good too see ya stu!
Stu, you bloody ripper, welcome back mate, great to see your ugly mug grace the screen again with a great video. Mate, seriously, you are a legend to so many of us and it is so sad when you aren’t posting so pull your finger out ok…..we all feel a bit like Eddie mate. Good to see you mate
Salt eats plastic 😆. Good video thanks and glad too see you again!
He's back and he's furry! Great to see you back for now Stu.
Thanks for the explanation of the starting circuit.
He's alive!
Welcome back Stu, 3 months late so must have been one hell of a holiday. Hope these long breaks aren't going to become a regular thing though. 👍🙂
Great, clear explanation of how to measure voltage and current around a circuit!!!! I have just bought a, AC/DC clamp ampèremeter/multimeter and I am ready to start checking and updating my electric system. Extremely valuable explanation 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 Thank you once again 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Missed your videos, good to see you back.
Had an interesting lesson last week, motor would not pull over, I succeed hydrolock, it is a newer mercury, and neither owner father or I realised that the gear shift and throttle were 1 control on the tiller arm, it had been put in gear and that locked out the pull start, so the pull start was locked until , the motor was shifted into nuteral
Great video. I'm pretty handy mechanically but had forgotten my high school lessons on voltage drop!
Eddy genuinely missed you nice to see him
Thank you Stu for making time for the UA-cam posse.
Beautifully explained and I really should have thought about this before.
You're welcome mate, glad you enjoyed it.
I hope to see more videos. I am working on my boat and have found your videos very helpful. Thank you for the time and effort!
Hope its going ok, nice to see the birds looking well. Great explanation of drop testing.
Good to have you back, you have been missed.
It was great to see you back. Thank you for all videos.
Mate where have you been, always looked forward to your vids.
The legend !
Thanks Stu, you sticker JuStu it takes pride of place on my boat
Voltage means nothing unless current can flow, perfect explanation! I missed you and your chickens! 😎 Happy you’re back. Greets from the Pacific Northwest!
Just had this on my 4.3 mercuiser inboard. Wouldn’t crank at all. Battery was good and I was getting 12.8 volts everywhere. I used one of those lithium jump starter packs, put the negative on the battery negative, and then put the positive on the positive battery terminal… still nothing, then I put the battery pack positive on the input side of the isolator switch, and the boat fired right up. I took the booster pack off and I checked the voltage drop across the short cable from the battery positive to the isolator switch whilst trying to crank the engine and it was massive. New length of cable fixed my issue. Testing for voltage under load was the key to finding the problem. No load, everything looked fine.
Looking a bit like the mad professor there Stu!! 🙂 Glad to see this vlog, which, as usual, is very instructive. Thanks for posting, and looking forward to the next one!
Aaahhhh. Old school Dangar.
Missed you bruh, always a treat to hear from the other island..
Hi. Just thinking last night “ How is mr dangar ?” Good to see the post.😊
Good to see you - missed ya just like Eddie! Lovely to see D-squad❤
Good to see you again Stu! If I'm ever vacationing in Australia, I'm buying you some beers! You have saved me thousands of dollars...
Good to see you back. I am glad that you showed Eddie ❤
Good to see you back Stu. I can start working on my boat again!
Hooray!! Stu and Australia still appear to exist.🙃😉
Eddie is a good boy!
Thought you got washed away in the floods, great to see you back. take care see you soooon.
Yet. Thank you so much for the class. Also. So nice to see you again. Take care.
I'm glad I found your channel! Currently working ON ships but I would like to be on land working WITH them instead. This is very motivating. Thank you 🙏
Nice to see that you have posted a new video, and you did make the information easier to understand.
Wow that’s amazing how happy that Dog was to see you. Always good videos.
Good to see Eddie!
love your troubleshooting videos, thanks Stu.
Another one to check that caught me out was a loose cut out switch bracket on the console, such a simple thing that cost me a lot of stress.
Once found it was fixed in less than a minute though.
Thanks for the vid Stu. Helpful content as always. Loved the "Eddie reunion" mate...priceless.
Nice to have you back Captain Stew , helping us on our DYI You must have a new camera 😮😮 Video quality is awesome. Thanks
welcome back!!
I had to come back to make sure I liked the video.
Hey, maybe you’ve addressed it before but I’d be interested in learning more about your life!
Great to see you back on the tube Stu 😀

As ever, thanks Stu! I’m about to begin the diagnosis!
Stu thank you for your channel. Your instruction has helped me with by various boat projects.
Great to see you. Hope life is grand in your lil piece of paradise.
It’s been awhile since I learned something thank you stu for sharing.
Great to see you back I was worried that you were unwell of similar. Love watching your videos and learnt somthing on this one
A nice and clear explanation as we are used to from your stu, good to be back on youtube cheers.
Hi buddy, good to see you back and looking forward to your videos if and when you upload. You’ve been missed from all the way back in Scotland 🏴 mate.
Wow. I’ve had a glass too many. It’s friday night afterall. You’ve gone glorious technicolour and have long hair. Am I in the right place? Lots of of stuff about circuits which looks super helpful. Another great video as always. Never a wasted moment. I recently replaced a head gasket on a yamaha outboard following one of your earlier videos so I owe you one. Maybe try that new thanks thing.
Excited (not quite as excited as Eddy) to see you again!
He’s back..
Well I was expecting you to use your remote starter switch, however you determined the problem was before it even got up to the solenoid. Nice video!
Welcome back Stu, good to see a new video.
Missed you! Nice explanation, even *I* understood what was going on. Mostly. Now what I need is a boat to practice on!
🎉So good to see you back, Stu!! I am always asking my hubby where you have been and just finally took to Google to ask 😂❤🎉
we miss you Stu!!!!!!!
great to have you back
Welcome back, great learning as usual. Thankyou
