While I can understand Sakurai's stance on story content being spoiled immediately as the game releases, it is 2024 and these things just happen. There's no stopping cutscenes or full game playthroughs getting leaked day 0.

@@dragnjames2190 That was one reason he explained why there was trailer cutscenes and not in-game cutscenes, but the actual real reason they don't do them anymore is due to time restraints. It was really costly to have about 50 minutes of animation, which put the squeeze on actual game development, and at the time the reception wasn't enthusiastic enough to warrant a return. However, CGI animation is cheaper and more efficient these days, and if games like Final Fantasy Rebirth can pump out 20 hours of animation, I don't see why Smash Bros. can't throw some budget into 40-50 minutes of cutscenes. Though maybe it has to do with licensing fees? Not sure.

@@TenApplesforTime It couldn't be licensing fees because cutscenes got replaced by advertisements, also known as Fighter Reveals. Which I personally dislike for a variety of reasons. Aside from the obvious fact it replaced cutscenes I also just think they never end up being as good as the cutscenes do because there's no overarching story, and because they're really just glorified advertisements, it ends up having to focus more on the new character getting in, which makes the overall variety of what happens in these videos to be a lot less than the cool stuff that happens in SSE. On top of that, the characters that do accompany the new character either have to be contextually connected (Samus for Ridley, DK and Diddy for K. Rool) or they have to be marketable (again because it's an ad). This causes a lot of reveal trailers (like Ridley's, Steve's, Sephiroth's, and Sora's) to focus on Mario more than any other non-newcomer because he's the most marketable character, and characters who aren't marketable don't get to be in these, like Ice Climbers for example. It's to the point that when Sora's trailer included them for a brief second when the darkness took over, eagle eyed viewers managed to notice that Nana's model was just recolored Popo with no hair difference, which implies they really weren't supposed to appear in these trailers to begin with. It's a real shame when in SSE almost every character, including the unpopular obscure ones, got to be included and be important in some way, with the exceptions only really being characters that were added in late. ROB got to be a full fledged main character with an arc of his own. If this were advertisements, ROB wouldn't even get to appear at all. It's a good thing my favorite character is Kirby because he's very marketable, but that doesn't change how much of a bummer it is to see so many other characters given the shaft in these videos. On top of that though, advertisements are supposed to set an expectation for what will be in the game itself, so advertising the recent games with these gorgeous CGI videos and then having none of that sort of interaction or gorgeous animation in the game inevitably causes some people to be disappointed. I remember being hyped for Dracula's Castle because the trailer showed Luigi running through it's halls and getting attacked by Castlevania enemies, only for the stage itself to be tiny and for none of the enemies to go onstage to hurt you. Not even Death at least, who got quite the spotlight for a background character.

The Brawl stage builder was peak. I remember asking my mom to buy an SD card so I could download custom maps from the internet on the computer and play them on my Wii. I love the building block style that Brawl's stage builder had, the drawn version on Sm4sh didn't hit the same.

Brawl was masterpiece, I agree it was the best in the series. Personally 35-40 playable characters with a massive story mode and tons of extra content is better than 80-90 characters with not much to do outside of vs battles.
Brawl was also my first smash game and easily the game I've sunk the most hours into in my entire life. Those sounds are also so damn nostalgic. I also agree that Brawl had the most personality out of all the smash games.

Man you are so right. I got Brawl at midnight on release and went home to play subspace emissary and all the other modes for the next week straight. It was the first smash with netplay, and it was also the best Crossover media experience before our entire culture got engulfed by the concept, which gave it an ethereal luster. Brawl was really something special, you call tell because even as a diehard competitive melee fan who acknowledges Brawl as the death of the competitive magic that Melee had, l STILL love it.
And yeah, this video is a 10/10 for me in another way too. I was also obsessed with Ganon because of Oot and twilight princess. One of my fondest memories was going to tournaments and eventually l got top 8 at a regional with him despite everyone in the competitive scene knowing that Ganon was the worst character. My tag was Ganon related. I remember F tilting my friend off the stage and yelling THIS IS SPARTA because 300 had just come out. I relate to this video so much, thanks for making it. Ultimate is great for what it is, being the biggest and most "perfect", but Brawl tripped so Ultimate could sprint. Lol

The point about Brawl being made before we became obsessed with crossover is especially true.
The HD titles have transformed Smash into a massive crossover juggernaut that is only really rivaled by Fortnite in terms of sheer quantity of different franchises in a video game. I just feel like something was lost in the transition to Smash 4 & Ult. The hype cycle for Smash felt like it shifted entirely to the big 3rd party reps now that we've gotten all the 1st & 2nd parties mainstays with Ult.
( Still wish we got some actual new Zelda characters from 3D games post Windwaker. BotW Link doesn't count when he's still legacy Link moveset wise. )

I think you got the reason why brawl's roster feels the most special to me (or at least why 4 and Ultimate feel a lot more corporate mandated compared to the 1st 3). It came out before crossovers in media were just EXPECTED, like everyone could say "add so and so as a guest". It INTRODUCED 3rd parties and kept it limited and special. Was the last game to feel like that fun Nintendo all stars palooza. While 4 was fine about it too at first, bringing some of them in through dlc (and that ballot) was a delayed opening of the floodgates for the misery that was Ultimate's dlc run on the community end. It just was the EXPECTATION that they all be 3rd parties, and the fact that some of those 3rd parties were basically Nintendo higher ups telling Sakurai to add them as promotion like Minecraft dude, added to that mandate feeling. And how after the Mario movie folks wanted a cinematic Nintendo universe, speaks to the state of these things now. Something silent but big about the series appeal got lost along the way, not of any fault of the devs per se, but because of the way pop culture itself is years after brawl.

Honestly? I kind of agree. I miss when Smash games prioritized gameplay and actual substantial content just as much as the characters. I would play Melee and Brawl for literal hours back in the day, because they offered more than just characters to keep me engaged. Adventure Modes, Events, Minigames like Target Test... all well thought out for the most part and a ton of fun.
Nowadays, though? It just seems like Smash has leaned too far into the hype gaming culture and mainly prioritizes characters and reveal trailers now with everything else feeling like an afterthought, which is why every Smash game since Brawl hasn't really clicked with me. Ultimate was where it became really apparent in my opinion. Yes, it may have every single character that's ever been playable in Smash's history plus some wild newcomers, and while that may seem cool at first, the novelty quickly wears off once you realize that the rest of the game was kind of sidelined for it, such as its incredibly lacking single player content and World of Light being nowhere near as enjoyable as Subspace Emissary.
Sure, I want cool new characters just as much as the next guy, but I also want other fun things to do in the game outside of that. Fleshing out the content of a game should be more important than seeing random people on the Internet going crazy over some character getting added to Smash. While the game can still be fun to play, it just feels like Smash has really lost its sense of direction and has resorted to the 'Quantity over Quality' approach, and it's why the series has lost a lot of its magic for me now. Sadly, I can't really see myself getting excited for the next Smash game unless it's a straight-up reboot of sorts, where hopefully the developers can put more time and focus into other areas of the game beyond the characters to make them truly great. After all, Smash isn't just about numbers.
Anyway, sorry for the long comment. I just had a lot I wanted to say on the matter.

Brawl was also the last game with a unified artstyle.
Smash 4 Wii U deliberately made things clash together which looked kind of jarring. Mario 3D Worldish Mario next to the off model HD Zelda characters looked so bad. Link's face. Ganon's face. Tink's lack of expressions. Kirby had diffuse shading on his body that no other character had. The Pokemon characters were just hd textured versions of the X/Y models. It was a weird hodgepodge of clashing artstyles, some of which were smoother Brawl models. ( Lucas. Wario & Peach. ) The 3ds version looked better with the harsh black outlines and the mostly recycled Brawl models with better colors and more limited expressions to hide the weird deformations and real time lighting that would bug out if you ever so slightly nudge the camera a certain way. Ult fixed the lighting issue and improved it significantly.
Speaking of Ult, it tries to blend Melee/Brawl's detail with a better version of 4's lighting and comes out looking slightly washed out because of it. It looks much better than 4, especially thanks to the lighting but it still fails short of the visual unity that Brawl & Melee have.

As someone who has been playing Smash Ultimate pretty frequently 3 years since the last character was revealed; I feel like Ultimate is carried by its gameplay and sheer volume of characters to play. Nah, Melee was the last truly great Smash.
Everything else is walking in its shadow and misses its arcadey-punchnyness that the original on N64 pioneered.
Brawl gets disqualified on game feel alone, which is a shame because if it had this it probably would be the best Smash game due to the copious amounts of fan service and the (at the time) legendary inclusion of third party characters.
The only thing I wish Melee had was co-op and maybe some more characters, but that's all dressing as far as I'm concerned - the most important part (and for a fighting game in particular) is how fun the game is to play at a fundamental level and Melee cannot be beaten here, both at a casual and competitive level.
Brawl was the most HYPED Smash game, but that doesn't automatically associate it with quality. One of the primary reasons it was so hyped is due to the fact that Melee itself was so good and beloved that it permeated the general gaming consciousness.

    • @ItsOfficiaI

      @Lucrei. Wrong.
You genuinely just like the fighting.
Guess what? Solid fighting mechanics is where you START from.
Brawl's fighting may not be as try hardy, but that doesn't make it bad, and on top of that it improves on literally EVERY OTHER aspect of Melee.
      The roster also fucks hard.

@@ItsOfficiaI "you genuinely just like the fighting"
I like a lot more than that in Melee, but I'll humour you and pretend that's true...
Turns out that the fighting in a fighting game is well... Very important!
Especially when you're comparing and contrasting between games in a series and even more so when attempting to rank them by some overarching core quality
It's perfectly fine to say Brawl is your favourite Smash. Is it the best one though? That's a different matter entirely and you're still entitled to that opinion but anyone who disagrees with you can state why they feel
What you're arguing is that Brawl is a better experience, which l don't necessarily agree with either (although l understand the reasoning), but I'm saying Melee is a better GAME i.e mechanically
So you can say that Brawl improved on all these things over Melee, and in many cases be correct but that still doesn't automatically make it better than Melee when Melee is just so much more fun to play moment-to-moment.
As l said Brawl would have been the greatest Smash game if it had gotten the fundamentals right. Sadly it didn't.

      @ItsOfficiaI  2 місяці тому +4

@Lucrei. A solid fighting base is where you start from. Brawl's fighting isn't bad, it's just different. That's what I'm saying.
Melee is more for the tryhards. For someone more casual like me, I don't find the fighting in Melee as enjoyable, even if I can occasionally feel really good and I whip together a wild combo.
Brawl is more consistent in making me feel satisfied with my gameplay.
Melee's combat is tighter and has a much larger ceiling. Brawl's is more broad.
So yeah, I still prefer Brawl even in gameplay.
