I'm a senior lady trying to keep abreast of what's happening in the world. But, as far as Stockton Rush is concerned, I'm close to throwing up a bit when I hear him saying that he has broken new ground with his careful engineering. The word hubris has been spoken at the Coast Guard hearing, and I completely agree.
Isn't it just amazing how these rich "adventurers" have all this money to blow for so called extreme tourism...except when it goes wrong? Then the taxpayers foot the bill for search and rescue, then recovery. Perhaps sending the families the bill might make some of these nuts think twice before doing something so risky.
Yeah, I wish they only picked up the pieces. Every single person with a little bit of knowledge knew they were squeezed dead. Just scoured the bottom in the area around the sunken ship. Planes and people out there spending money and time. Guess they can log it as a drill to stay ready for a real problem in the future. Four bozos and one poor young person died. Good riddance regarding the French guy with no conscience and that nutcase Stockton. God I wish he wasn’t onboard so we could see him go down in court.
Which recovery? It's in the interest of the whole world to find out disaster reasons, if any. In this case it's an obvious fraud. If you cannot see it you never did sub aqua tech.
Some risk need to be taken without them we wouldn’t have a space program or the medical advancements we have today…and let’s not forget the HUNLEY submarine…without the men on board who risk their lives submarine exploration wouldn’t exist as it does today
No he wasn’t. He asked his mother and she gave up her seat for him. The aunt didn’t know what she was talking about. She was not there his mother was and he wanted to go.
That was a story from one family member only, his aunt, that got whipped up and sensationalised by the media for dramatic headlines. The rest of the family told a very different story. In fact 19 year old Suleman, a Rubiks Cube geek, was so excited to go, he rang the Guinness World Records office and registered his bid to complete his Cube at the deepest point on Earth its ever been done, beside the Titanic wreck. That does not sound like a young man only going to Titanic to please his father! The truth is his dad was a big family man who loved his kids. He would not have knowingly risked their lives. He was clearly completely taken in by arch narcissist and snake oil salesman Stockton Rush's patter, as sadly were Titanic expert PH Nargeolet and so many others who should have known better.
They say the journeys were a great success. Not true. Many were aborted before they got to the Titanic. When this happened, there were no refunds. Just credit for the next trip down there.
This is way too flattering and factually not always correct. If you really want to know what happened, watch the Coast Guard testimonies about the disaster.

@@CurtisJeffries-cd5vu The polar prince was the second mother ship. They rented that one because it was cheaper and also smaller that is why titan was not carried on polar prince

Not sure when this documentary debuted, but they omitted to focus in much detail on certain important background facts like the role Stockton's Rush's/Oceangate's financial problems played in the disaster. CEO Rush was clearly guilty of many cost cutting measures, to keep his 'baby' Oceangate going. Submersibles that can go to such immense depths are ruinously expensive to run, and he needed every super-rich passenger fare he could get his hands on! The documentary did mention how few of the Titanic expeditions were actually successful, ie took paying millionaires to the wreck. Most were cancelled at the last minute due to weather/umpteen unspecified 'technical problems', and unsurprisingly the disappointed millionaires concerned, pressured Rush for their money back (he was very reluctant to give refunds, and tried to persuade them all to simply redeem their ticket on a future Titanic trip). This obviously meant that in its third year when the disaster happened, Rush was facing serious and possibly ruinous financial pressures. We witnessed his desperation when he slashed the $250k ticket price to a wealthy father and son by $100k apiece. Unfortunately the Dawoods would ultimately take those fatal places, ironically paying the full price to be killed in the fatal implosion. As you mentioned, one of Rush's many economies was switching to a smaller mother ship, the Polar Prince. Unlike its predecessor, this ship had no powerful onboard electronic system to safely lift the submersible and place it into the water. Instead, the second, much smaller ship towed the Titan many miles out to the Titanic wreck site on a floating platform. Critics have cited this journey alone as placing significant, avoidable wear and tear (and potential damage), on the Titan sub, and specifically its weakest element, its carbon fibre hull. Many such concerning details about cost cutting, and resulting safety compromises emerged at the recent US Coastguard Inquiry into the Titan disaster. To be fair to the documentary makers, they clearly completed this programme before that public inquiry took place, so could not reference any of its findings. But more to the point, this TV report focused on a specific subject and time frame - the search for the Titan submersible and its ultimate fate. I think it presented the facts of that limited timeline clearly and intelligently, and used some excellent contributors.
Excellent, accurate, well researched and produced deep dive (no pun intended), on this much covered tragedy. I hope the makers will produce a follow up documentary covering events since, and specifically the findings of the US Coastguard inquiry of 2024.

I have a funny feeling that this tourist sub was really a poor design. No automatic resurfacing for if there is a drop in oxygen levels inside the sub. If I had designed this thing, I would have made it bigger, almost about the size of the MIR that James Cameron rode in, as it would have several buttons and switches. On a MIR, I think those tourists could have had an emergency backup system such as an alarm for if oxygen levels inside the sub would start to drop, and the sub would surface with a signal being sent to the mother ship to have the davit ready to pick the sub up once it surfaces.
Oh the Titan was a total disaster - Stockton Rush designed and made it on the cheap. You only have to compare it with the sophisticated submersible craft used by people like James Cameron to see that!
