      @Federico Giuliano spoke to an expert from LG and the TV has automatic pixel refresh to help prevent burn-in each time you put the TV on standby. You really don’t need to worry about burn-in unless you watch things like the news channels for hours a day.

    I was determined to buy a TV from one of the Big Boys (Sony, Samsung, LG) but I unexpectedly needed a new one before I was ready so I decided to go with a TCL 6 series and I have to say I'm now a TCL fan. I watch a lot of basketball and it looks great.

    Can you address the fact that many people leave their cable boxes and satellite receivers at whatever settings the installer left it at? I'm a former cable tech and seen way too many times people with great TV's weren't getting optimal picture either from using non-HD channels or inputs when HD is available or the default box settings are standard def or auto fill screen format or just not using hdmi. It would help a lot of people realize how good their displays really are when the source settings are better. Thanks.

    Also, the type of signal that the TV is receiving makes a huge difference in picture quality. And also, the bigger the TV, the more distortion it has when watching low bit content that is not 4k. Most 65" and smaller sizes look better than the 75" or larger. Thanks for the great info.

    Note on antenna for sports. Watching the Olympics over the past month on a TV with ATSC 3.0 was a real treat in the SF Bay area. The signal was 1080p and HDR10. In our household we could see a significant improvement vs the other house TVs with ATSC 1.0.

    Hockey is probably the toughest sport to watch on TV due to the constant motion and following that little puck. For Sports OLED TV is only way to go.
    So ignore most of what they say about OLED TV's being to reflective and prone to burn in, I should have bought a OLED TV years ago but I was to worried about those things and now I have an OLED, the light reflection doesn't seem any worse than my other high quality LED TV I have.

    Thanks for this guide to choosing a good Sports TV. I agree that OLED TVs are the best in this regard (and OLED TVs offer the added benefit of nearly perfect viewing angles, so sports fans sitting at the sides will still enjoy excellent picture quality). I always encourage folks who are considering a major TV purchase to check the reviews from reputable independent test sites, such as Rtings. Rtings evaluates TVs for factors like dirty screen effect and provides model-by-model rankings of their performance at displaying sports. While big box stores and giant online retailers can be great places for finding good bang-for-the-buck TV prices, they really can't be relied upon for accurate advice about which model will give you the features you want and need.

Arenas are dark and cameras used for regional broadcasts aren't the greatest. Hardly any games are actually in 4k even if you pay extra. The NHL just doesn't have any interest in setting broadcast standards for their games. I want to sit down and watch a game and know that my $6k purchase was worth it. Really helpful info here on getting the best quality video signal from any TV.I already knew streaming signals looked better on my old TV, but I recently bought a TCL 6 series, and the difference in clarity through a cable is significant from my 10 year old JVC HD screen. A good cable signal looks almost 3D when compared to the same image on the older set. But my new set struggles on some really old shows on certain networks. Seems almost like it tries to blur out faces on some programs. I have found that certain cable channels (Decades, METV, & a few others that broadcast mostly pre-1980's shows) are just not broadcasting a signal that is well suited to my new TV, while other networks airing through the same cable are great. Anyone else experiencing this?

    • @mpholicx2
      @mpholicx2 Рік тому +1

      Its compression. They compress the old stuff to save bandwidth. A lot of video data is lost in the compression and when your tv tries to upscale it theres not enough info to properly upscale. If your old tv was 1080 theres not as much upscaling to do as your new 4k. The upscaling engine of the TCL is one of its weak points compared some of the other brands although even Sony can struggle with very heavily compressed signals.

    I couldn’t really find a better spot to post something like this, but I was considering a new TV sometime.
    So lets say the LG A2 (+ Roku) and the TCL 6-series are both in the 48-55 inch range, and both are $700, which would be all I can afford. However, the 48 inch LG C2 is only about $1000 (don’t correct me on this, I was just setting prices as I saw on Best Buy).
    My TV will be used moderately. Nowhere near heavy use, and not quite light use.
    When I do use it, it will mostly be used for gaming. I play retro games a little more often than modern ones; don’t have a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, but I do have a PC with HDMI 2.0b on it. Plus, when Nintendo finally makes a Switch 2 for example (the Switch being my go-to console atm), there’s a non-zero chance that it’d support 120Hz. Keep in mind, the A2 doesn’t have a 120Hz panel, but being OLED, it supposedly will have a better pixel-response.
    Another use for my TV will be video content. I normally keep the lights on when using it, but movie time usually takes place late at night, and with the lights off. Thus, the nature of Mini-LED the TCL has may cause potential blooming (not helped that two of my favorite movies have prominent starry scenes).
    If I upgrade my sound system from 5.1, eARC would be pretty important feature, since it’ll likely be a mere soundbar setup.
    And finally, being such a big purchase, *I want to keep it as my TV for 5-10 years,* like my last one from 2015. Even if OLED’s lifespan is in question, I will at least consider buying a 5-year warranty.
    So, if even $700 is a bit steep for me, should I get the A2, or the 6-Series? Or should I still save up yet more money to get the C2?

    I’m so curious as to why cable has such bad quality? Like it literally an entire little computer giving me picture. How is that so bad compared to streaming apps? Like it doesn’t make sense in my head

    Sony - even if you don't notice bad motion, chances are at least one of your friends does. Same for movies and TV. You have lots of choices if you just watch FBI warning messages - although if you watch those messages for hours at a time I'd get something other than OLED.

    Just got LG C2 77” and it’s great for sports. That said, if I have to change it to ‘Vivid’ or ‘Daylight’ mode to see dark shows like Peaky Blinders or The Pale Blue Eye, does that negate the entire purpose of having OLED? Or rather, do those modes kind of nerf the detail of OLED enough to just go with QLED?

      I would use standard mode and bump up the brightness. Looks much better than vivid mode.

    A90J vs S95B I kind of prefer the look of the Sony processing but the Samsung looks great. Is the A90J worth it in 2023 @digitaltrends I am upgrading from an old lg lcd so both would be a huge jump and Samsung is cheaper also.Any thoughts on this decision would be appreciated.

    I thought the only reason to get 120hz television was to turn on the motion interpolation. No? Otherwise, isn’t it simply displaying the same frame 4 times in a row?

    • @games4850
      @games4850 Рік тому

      I think if you're watching a 60hz piece of content on a 120hz capable TV you are STILL watching it at 60hz, as the TVs processor will tell the screen to adjust the refresh rate to 60hz to display correctly. Again its the confusion between true refresh rate and the motion interpolation/motion smoothing/motion flow etc.....
      For example, if you hook up a gaming pc to your TV and set the refresh rate to 120hz on your desktop and games, they will run at up to and including 120fps (assuming the hardware is powerful enough that is).

      @@games4850 but I assume sports in the US is broadcast or transmitted at 30 Hz, so what’s the benefit of 120 Hz, if frame interpolation is disabled?

    Hey Caleb, I have the opportunity to buy an 85" Samsung QN900B for $5400 CAD or an 83" LG G2 for $7000 CAD. Is it still worth the extra $1600 for the OLED in this case? It will be in a dark room and used primarily for movies>games>sports.

    So true about going to a SB party and being disappointed with the quality of the picture. I went to one a couple of years ago and it was on a big screen using a projector. I'm thinking 'WT'H I'm supposed to watch the biggest game of the year on this crap?' I don't go to these parties any more. Ha. As far as "oled every day all day".....no. Mini-leds are a great option.
