      @lopezaldo80 Set up your cooler so the pump is the lowest point on the system. It's normal to have a few small bubbles in an AIO and doing this will keep the bubbles away from the pump and they shouldn't hurt anything if they are in the radiator.

    If there's an intriguing video idea involving displays or just old common tech questions with an interesting twist (because the bleeding edge tech justifies another look at them), then James is almost guaranteed to be the writer. He also always makes great use of the big team LMG have at their disposal now.
    I feel like James is a little underrated. He's a great guy and as a writer he is the most balanced I think. He is informative and detail oriented where necessary, puts all of that in to an interesting "story" (what Linus call it) and keeps it entertaining as a charismatic host (Linus and him also have great chemistry). For me, gaming starts to get immersive at 60° FOV - anything less, and i see too much of the room. Then again, i do VR as well, so i'm probably jaded. :) My proven formula: Distance = Screen-Width * 0.75.

  • @Afonso.Soares
    @Afonso.Soares 3 роки тому +4

    Should have come here sooner, but there are some misinformation about SMPTE:
    - their recommendation for viewing distance only considers image height, that being 3x with +-1x of acceptance;
    - the 30° value that everyone mistakenly talk about is regarding maximum seating offset from center, as in +-15° from the middle.
    Using that calculation, you can see that THX is actually following that rule if you consider a 2.39:1 movie.
    Furthermore, NTSC, PAL, HDTV (720p and 1080p) and UHDTV 1 and 2 (being 4K and 8K respectively) all follow the rule of minimum distance to not see individual pixels, and if you think NTSC was funny, you should see where UHDTV falls in (spoiler alert, it’s 1.6x for 4K, as seen in this video, 0.8x for 8K).
    Edit: Taran, surprisingly, is still within the SMPTE standard. For knowledge, 1.85:1 movies accepts maximum of 50 degrees, and 62 degrees for 2.39:1

      the perception of that is why HDR and other technologies are advertised so much. However it also isn't 100% accurate, there's a pixelworks whitepaper which said people have *at least* 50% greater visual acuity for images in motion compared to static vision tests. Interestingly this means that greater perceived image quality can be achieved with either higher resolutions or higher refresh rates. To achieve lifelike presence in VR requires both, so I hope screen tech continues to improve despite the persistent naysayers.

    So, AVS, and front projectors ask this question about once every couple of years. The most common size is about 10” to 12” of diagonal for each foot of viewing distance. These are all about the BIG screen experience, but with immersion and image quality being the whole point for many, these numbers hold solid.
    TV viewing is very different than home theater. It is much more social, so further viewing distances allow interaction with others. When you eliminate the room, as you try to do in a home theater, you find people enjoy much larger sizes. Also, much dimmer displays, like OLED and front projection.
    You should try this again in a large home theater space with a good (JVC) front projector.
    We sit about 16 feet from a 161 inch diagonal.
    Immersion!

    I was the first person among family and friends with a true "big screen" and I loved it fairly close (10-11 feet, limited by living room) while everyone else thought that was too close...at first.
    FFWD to today where pretty much everyone has a MINIMUM screen size of 50+ inches and I feel like even 65's and 70's look like postage stamps at typical "living room distance"...and a LOT of people are agreeing with me.

I just read that 80 degrees is the max for the human eye, which I never knew -- given how 120-160 is a real talking point (I guess, that's just marketing, or people really love to turn their necks a lot). The general 'max' is seen as 70 degrees, but 60 degrees more generally. The 'sweet spot' for closeness is 45-50 degrees.

    • @TheClassicWorld
      @TheClassicWorld 2 роки тому

      Fun fact: at 1080p/32", watching 1080p Blu-ray, my max is 63 degrees, which is 1.5 x 15.5 (screen height; just under 2'). This is where I can see the image without seeing pixels. Any close than this and I can see pixels a little. This is the hard limit. But, 50-63 degrees is too close for me. I like anywhere from 42 to 26 degrees (3-5'), depending on a few factors. Blu-ray also looks good at 3.5 feet away (36-degree viewing angle). 4' is really the limit in terms of quality and close viewing angle, though. Anywhere from 3.5-4.5' is perfect for most films and most people. At 5', the picture quality is slightly better in many cases, but the viewing angle is 26 degrees (the hard limit for the back of any cinema). 4.5' is about 30 degrees, which is very common, too.

Like of course if you're into the tech you're going to be looking for the different features and shortcomings but someone who doesn't can just take it in a different perspective. It would actually be cool to see not only seating distance preference but also a comparison between a handful of TVs from the uber budget to maximum awesome and see which ones the non-tech initiated prefer.

    • @speedstyle.
      @speedstyle. 2 роки тому +1

      That's not true. For 20/20 vision it's about 1350p resolution (~2.4K), even for the best 1% with 40/20 vision it's less than 5K. So you should never see pixels at 8k - but even at 100K or something you would want antialiasing. It's not a substitute for resolution.

    • @Katzelle3

      That is assuming that humans cannot see any details that are smaller than one arc minute when it is closer to a third of an arc minute due to micro movements the eyes perform when looking at an object for extended periods of time
      Aliasing artefacts actually become too small to be seen at 8k

    • @speedstyle.
      @speedstyle. 2 роки тому

      @@Katzelle3 Aliasing is where pixels don't match what they would show with infinite resolution. If you have a 100K screen with 200 001 vertical black and white lines, the left half will round to black and the right half will round to white. This is possible to create at any resolution, so you always want antialiasing.
      If you're saying we gain resolution on objects over time that sounds pretty cool, I'll look into it! However I don't think it's aliasing, and it wouldn't let you see individual pixels. I think it's also baked into the standard eg Snellen measurements of visual acuity? Anyone getting better than 40/20 (20/10?) vision must be using that kind of temporal processing, as the density of cones on the retina is only about 0.5 arcminutes.

If this is the case, are there any real benefits to pushing resolutions on new TVs beyond 4k?

    • @Afonso.Soares
      @Afonso.Soares 3 роки тому

      One of reasons I can think of is going beyond said recommendations, specially for theaters. 4K is just enough for 2.39:1 movies, and there’s also the IMAX cinema, where their horizontal 70mm film has a theoretical resolution of 12K.
      One of the most overkill sensors that never materialized was the RED Epic 617, which would be capable of capturing a 28000x9334 image at 25 fps
