I was wondering why the Sentinel in X-Men: COTA looked so much different from the Sentinels in the comic books. IMHO, the comic book Sentinels look pretty goofy, while _this_ Sentinel looks like he means business. Let's see Colossus and Wolverine try their Fastball Special on _this_ guy! >:)
Something I've never understood about the Sentinel. They were suppose to oppose all mutants, right? So why were they fighting with Magneto, who is a mutant, in the video game?
They're not fighting for Magneto in X-Men COTA. Sentinels have a distinct victory pose of capturing any defeated mutant opponent on the final win. Konami's X-Men arcade is a different story. The Brotherhood could have reprogrammed the Sentinels against the X-Men and humans instead.
Sentinel was top tier in COTA, God tier in Marvel Vs Capcom 2, And god tier in the first version of Marvel vs Capcom 3. Then he got patched alot, and eventually modified through Ultimate MVC3. Now he's low-mid tier. Fuck this.
Lol, no. He was only god tier against people who didn't block (which is basically everyone online.) Even if his health hadn't been nerfed, he still would've been maybe mid-high. Besides, Dark Phoenix made that game a complete mess anyway.
AirLancer Do you even follow competitive Mvc3?.. Justin Wong put Sentinel on S tier (the only one) on vanilla 1.00 Mvc3 (release version). Sentinel was: a 1.3million health assist with the best support assist (Drone) in the game, extremely easy 100% combo, X-factor unblockable anywhere (laser x fly, jD combo) and an overall too efficient mid-range game. He was broken early release and got patched for good reasons. Then later in the game, people found out Phoenix techs making her the new god tier. But without the early nerf, nothing would have stopped MVC3 Sentinel and thats coming from Jwong/Marn.
Xecutionner2K Do you? Maybe right at the beginning of the game it seemed that way, before things got figured out. But with the later discovery of the DHC glitch making doing massive damage a piece of cake, a character like Sentinel who's huge and extremely vulnerable to high/low mix ups and instant overheads is just a giant target. Sentinel Drone assist and easy damage was all he had going for him, but when 90% of the cast has huge damage then why bother. Also, Haggar Lariat and Tron's Flame assists were easily the best in the game. How the hell is laser XFC fly, j.D unblockable? You'd just have to block the j.D high. His neutral game isn't very good because of his slow speed, and with characters like Dante, Magneto, and Wolverine in the game Sentinel was fated to never be that good. The nerf just hurt him worse. Shoot, I remember way back at the beginning of SF4 in 2008 people were saying Zangief might've been top tier. Day/Week 1 tier lists are bullshit, and even the pros have a lot of room to figure things out.
AirLancer You are mostly right on everything. You however forget the most important point: practice is vastly different than theorycrafting. Sentinel's ease of use made him a potential 1 hit killer with close to 0% chance of dropping combo. Sorry for the typo, I meant Laser x XFC cancel which is a 50/50 mixup (dash d.LK OR instant j.D) being so fast on Xfc3 it was humanly impossible to predict. Also, the very easy hitconfirm full screen laser, d. LK x HFC, j D was too easy to abuse This, coupled with his then high priority qcf LP target punch > HSF, invincible air super, among some other things, and you only had to realize the first version of Sentinel was so ridiculous they nerfed him after 1 week if I'm right.
Well in practice Sentinel didn't do so hot either. At Evo only one player in Top 8 had Sentinel, 2 in top 16. Compared to 5 Wolverines, 5 Weskers, and 5 Phoenixes. The thing about "dropping combos" is that the best players generally won't drop their combos, regardless of how difficult they might be. Tiers don't take individual player skill into account, and assume that the characters are being played to their fullest potential. Meanwhile, practically all the better characters had "so-fast-you-have-to-guess" mix ups, often being much better than Sentinel's, and they didn't even need XF to do them. I have almost no doubt that if Vanilla Marvel 3 continued to be played competitively, and even if Sentinel had kept his health, you'd see the use of Sentinel steadily decline. Sure there'd be the odd player here and there who'd try to make it work, but most would write him off as not worth it. The assist, while good, wouldn't make up for all his shortcomings on defense, neutral, and if he was forced to be anchor.
@ChaosBroly From this game to MvC3, Sentinel is in his worst shape yet. This one and MvC2 Sent at least required a bit of effort for their damage and had the tools to be top tier. MvC3 Sent however is just a big punisher with easy as pie combos, but gets zoned out pathetically and NOW can't even take a hit for his big size.
Ninja Warriors Once Again for PS4 (the remake of the Ninja Warriors SNES game) introduces Raiden as a playable character. It's a gigantic ninja robot similar to the Sentinel from X-Men COTA.

In the arcade game he reprograms the sentinels to oppose all humans (instead of mutants just like he did in ultimate x-men)
that was in the arcade Beat 'em up, where magneto had them reprogrammed, in X-Men COTA, the sentinels oppose ALL mutants, magneto included.

I think because of that random inclusion in this game, that specific sentinel became it’s own character- appearing in every Vs. game after that
