- Hey Peeps! I think it's safe to say that I love this dress! I am so grateful to my customer who brought me this pattern as I'm not sure I would have bought it if I hadn't seen it made up. It is a very easy pattern to follow I think the trickiest part is the pockets and there is a handy dandy sew-along for that 😉. What do you think? Would you make as many fabric hungry beasts of a dress as I have OR would it be a "one and done" for you? Let me know in the comment section 😊

I bought this pattern before seeing your vlogs as I fell in love with the skirt. I am on my way making the C dress for my 75th birthday in June. Found a gorgeous white-ish lace in viscose, not the drapey kind, has more of a stiffness to it. Lining it with a beige soft viscose, (I know, it's a nightmare). The lace acts as an overlay and I am flatlining for the first time. Wish me luck, it`s a first time on this pattern and I will need som encouragement Sian! Your sew-alongs do that, they are brilliant, thank you!
I am in love with the pockets and twirly skirt! Gorgeous. It makes sense that you want to make more as it suits you.
I've done a detachable collar, and the way I did it was to put a facing on the dress (I know you're not a fan! 😆🙃) and put buttonholes in the facing. Then I put a facing on the collar (the same pattern piece as on the dress), and put the buttons on the collar facing. My logic was that the buttons would be comfortable on the collar because they would be in between both facings. For the collar I cut two facing pieces, sandwiched the collar seam allowance between the two, and then overlocked the outer edge of the facing pieces together. Hope that makes sense!! And good luck with that dress because it sounds FABULOUS!! Lynne 🤩😍

I have made 5 now...and will probably make more. The last one I used a balloon long sleeve.....all others have been sleeveless. Thank you for talking me into making this beautiful pattern!!!
I have similar dress pattern from a book, I love it because you can make the bust part bigger with zero problem without loosing the shape.

I bought this pattern after watching your vlogs. It was a Sian made me do it moment as I'm definately not an hour glass shape. However I will give it a go when I have lost the extra weight I have gained recently. I bought this pattern in the sale at Weaver Dee, before I discovered your channel. I bought it to make for dancing as my husband and I dance ballroom and Latin and I need lots of wide skirted 50’s style dresses. This need was also the driving force that got me back into sewing after I retired. I’ve spent so long trying to find off the peg dresses that fit and had given up!
I followed your sew along to make my first 8577 and love it! Your videos made the whole process enjoyable and easily doable. It’s not perfect as I made it in viscose challis rather than cotton lawn, and I think I can improve the fit for my second one by going down one or two sizes and doing a full bust adjustment as it’s a bit big around the armscye . But I love the pattern and am working on the bodice toile for the 2nd one. I’ll do this one in cotton lawn. 🚴♀️🐝

I saw your savanna print 8577 on you tube when I first started sewing after a 30+ year break. I totally fell in love with the print and the pattern and I had to have one. I ended up making a toile in viscose and would you believe it…I fluffed up the button holes. Never mind I have adjustments that need to be made anyway before I’m happy enough to cut into my savanna print. So I intend to make it up very soon….it’s been sitting on my ‘to do’ list since late 2020! The fabric went halfway around the world during the pandemic ….and got lost with my friends suitcase …and found again months later….it took a total of 8 months to find it’s way to me! 😅

I have this pattern also. I bought it when it first came out. I’ve yet to make it, but it’s on my list this summer.
I have no problem with having multiple dresses in the same pattern.
I am tall, 6’ and I routinely buy 5-6 yards of fabric for a full skirted dress, I usually add 4” to any skirt and pants, and 2” or so to sleeves and torso.
I'm almost sold on this now, but can't see myself buying over 9 metres of fabric for one project unless I come across an absolute steal! I love the shape though, and have shirt dress on the to do list so maybe... if I manage to get through the patterns I already have fabric for
Sadly I’m a rectangle so this pattern probably isn’t for me but love it on you. I also LOVE the larger contrasting buttons
It is for an 8577 that Mark bought me 7 metes of the Lady McElroy Macaw Safari, I have just dug out an length of apple print cottton for a wearable muslin, so looking forward to starting it

I just bought this pattern and I hope it is going to fit me and my body. I am going to go through my stash of fabrics and hopefully find something to make it in. And I am going to try making it fully lined and se what difference it makes. My partner hopefully won’t notice the added patterns in my stash.

I also bought this after seeing your reviews of it, and I’ve done a couple versions. I had to do a full bust adjustment, and convert the waist darts to tucks and shorten the midriff band because I’m so short waisted, but it fits well and looks beautiful. I also lengthened the skirt to hit just below my knee, on my very long legs. I found I prefer the unlined version I made out an of old cotton sateen sheet (I mostly wear it around the house), but the lined version is nice too and would work better for lighter weight fabrics than I was using. The unlined version has visible top stitching, but I’m fine with that on a shirt dress. I hemmed the outer fabric of the lined one by hand, all 17’ of it, and I’m not doing that again!
Oh, and the unlined version is actually a striped sheet. Seconding that you must follow the recommended grain lines! The back yoke looks really cool in a striped fabric, with a nice chevroned detail, and the stripes on the circle skirt also look cool. I was very careful to match up the stripe positions of the top, midriff, and skirt at the center front and the yoke, and to keep the center line parallel to the woven stripe, but that’s it.
I have it, I bought it because I use to have a pattern from vogue that I lost that had very similar lines and I loved that pattern. I really wish I could find or remember the number of the other one. It looked mostly like the sleeveless version of this one but the waist band was wider, the skirt less full and it had a side zipper.
I love yours though so perhaps I’ll try 8577.
Great video Sian, I made my first 8577 way back just after I returned to sewing, probably 7 years ago, it was in quilting cotton & I made the short version with sleeves & collar. I loved it at the time & I’m definitely not normally a pattern repeater but wanted to try the sleeveless version so made that in the longer length in a viscose twill which hangs & drapes beautifully. Then I found your channel and wow- someone else who loved the dress! So I made a 3rd in cotton sateen following your sew-a-along (which is great btw & I learned so much from it). I much prefer the latter two, I don’t think I’m keen on the sleeves now & I’m not mad on the shorter length so I don’t really wear my first one now. I don’t know why I chose a cotton sateen (with some stretch in it) but it’s made a beautiful dress, nice and ‘pouffy’, I think this may have been a happy accident. I have 2 lots of fabric in my stash sidelined for the 8577 so will make it again. As I said I’m not a pattern repeater so obviously it’s made an impression. My question to you is (well 2 really) - when you line it in cotton lawn, how do you go on in the winter with tights? As when I wear a dress lined in cotton lawn in winter it sticks to my legs which has put me off using that for ‘winter’ dresses. Also I have some beautiful silk that I got very cheaply from a closing down sale, do you think that would be too ‘floaty’ for this dress? You’ve inspired me to make another for this summer so thanks for this video, I love the way you look in yours and good for you for ‘overdressing’! There’s far too many people ‘underdress’ now so it’s lovely to see someone dressing well. 👍😁

Hi Sian. I had seen that pattern before but never considered it. However, after seeing your makes I fell in love with it and have made two, so far. I have been so inspired seeing all your 8577 makes. Also, must tell you I used your facing suggestion/method--it makes so much more sense!
I like fabric-hungry dresses! My T&T is a full-skirted jersey maxi dress, with the skirt pieces re-cut as wide as they'll go on folded material...
Just finished the Taita dress, which is a bit stingy on the skirt... so there might be a bit of a Frankenpattern happening... (without the pockets, although I do need to re-check your video on in-seam pocketses with French seams in the mix!).
I love that dress as much as you do. Haven’t bought the pattern yet … should get my hands on it before it goes out of print. It’s just hard to get and rather expensive here. And the list of still have to make them patterns from my collection is already overwhelmingly long … still 🧐😉😽💕

I had never noticed the 8577 until I saw it on your videos. Th3 first video I ever saw of yours was an 8577 you were making (perhaps the morning glory one?) And it was just gorgeous. So I needed it. I still haven't made it because I wanted toil fabric and never had enough of any one print to use, but now I finally have a lovely duvet cover to use, do I will be able to. It took forever to be able to get the pattern. It was always out of stock at Something Delightful. Maybe your fault? Lol. I think everyone saw yours and needed one too.
Yeah the skirt on that pattern really is dreamy it moves you know what if you were going to make like an evening out dress and made that in a swishy taffeta that would be 555 for me

I haven't made the 8577 as my measurements fall outside the sizing Vogue has.It is completely my style though. I don't have theCobra corsage fabric but I do currently have the Tokyo Nightlife in both viscose and lawn - the lawn will be a shirt (I'm thinking a Style Arc Florence perhaps) and the viscose I am leaning toward a long sleeved Megan Nielsen Matilda curve (and yes I'd have to draft a long sleeve).Although the skirt isn't as full this would be the closest pattern I have to the 8577. I could also draft my own version as I have done that before. Inspiration everywhere😂
Hi interesting low down on this so down and since you said lipstick on the collar I was thinking maybe you could find a novelty fabric with that lipstick on the collar or lipsticks on the fabric and then you could work maybe an appliqué of some kind or actually make a collar partially with that print and partially with the white collar be fun

What shirt do you make from the leftover fabric from dresses? I didn't catch it if you mentioned it. Love the dresses on you, definitely better than the envelope. If I can get the pattern I'll definitely make it much like your mum :D collar, sleeves and half circle skirt it the way to go for me.

I do have this pattern, and, based on the way I organize my pattern collection, I do lump it with vintage-style dresses, mostly because of the full skirt. I've had the urge to make it because of the longer waist and overall line of the torso, because I'm not a fan of the dresses that cut right at the waist and then straight into a full skirt without "smoothing out" the hip line. Anyway, I haven't gotten to it, and my hesitance with any pattern for wovens with set-in sleeves is that I have to completely adjust the shoulders, armscye and sleeve width for my very thick upper arms, and forward, narrow shoulders. I've noticed you haven't made this with sleeves, but given your experience, I'm curious to know if you think the sleeves or armholes need a lot of adjustment. It seems that the standard bodice block by the Big Four companies is for a woman with broad, very square shoulders and thin arms. I've been leaning toward making everything short, dolman-style sleeves, but that isn't especially flattering and serves to emphasize the round slumpiness of my arms! I don't wear sleeveless without layering something with sleeves underneath, usually a plain, tight knit shirt, and I'm trying to make things I can wear alone, so I am really looking to find out how the sleeves are on this before messing with a bodice toile because I like the gathers and figure I can narrow the shoulders by increasing the gathering. Good plan? Anyway, thank you for the review on this. I saw its potential and plan on doing a shorter version, just above the knee in some thin black fabric for a hopefully wearable toile for the first go 'round. Thanks!
I can't say for sure as I have never made the sleeves but I have found a similar issue on other Big 4's; the sleeves do run tight for me. I have done a full bicep adjustment and found that worked well. If you think you'll like the dress it's worth making a muslin and seeing how much work might be involved in getting it right for you 😊 Hope that helps a little bit 😊

Difficult question! I love them both 😍. They are very different this one is a little more vintage/classic and the M7974 is more modern leaning. Get both when they’re on sale? 😉🤣

Hello, may I ask you a question? I am from The Netherlands and I bought this pattern a few weeks ago. Coincidentally I saw your review on the internet and that you have made this dress already 7 times. When I made the dress the hem was not straight. I had a huge difference at the bottom. Normally when I use patterns of Vogue I can just turn the hem in, but with this dress I had a lot of work to get the hem straight. Did you encounter the same problem? Nobody can clarify to me how this is possible, because when I put the paper pattern back on the fabric there was hardlt any difference. Look forward to receiving your reply. Hi :) Do you mean the hem was uneven when it was hanging or worn? It sounds like the bias may have dropped in places. I find that with the cotton lawns it doesn't' really happen but when I've used viscose I had to level the hem a lot. I also use bias binding to finish a curved hem like this dress has as, for me, it usually gives a neater finish. I hope that makes sense. :)

I tried and failed miserably so much so I threw the pattern away (in haste). I think now I would like to try again.

You talked into the pattern, but have not made it. I'm afraid the skirt will be too big for me. I am also straight up and down and its not recommended for me. I do love all yours, perhaps I will try one of these days

I think some women just dress more casually than others and some ladies are just not casual with their clothes and as long as you’re comfortable you should wear what you love no I’m not saying wear a ball gown to tea in the afternoon or to McDonald’s but in general where what do you like when you like when you get an invitation that I asked for specific kind of dressing that’s very different but you can still be on the edge of what pleases you even for an RSVPed occasion

Well, losing your sew-jo video (an inspiration since my mentor left me) was and is my inspiration to keep the momentum for sewing. Your sewing ability is where I want to be...GOD bless me, please with the gift (is there such a thing as being "beat to the sewing GODS" AWKWARD I am with this stuff... like one would say about someone's face that is "beat to the GODS" - How do you say that for a sewing mastery?) I have missed a couple of videos other than the repeaters, my fabric, and sewing ideas grow exponentially every day as this world changes with good and evil (I do look forward to stolen moments at the sewing machine life seems to be winning but one day.
