- Branding begins at birth. Our name can affect our job opportunities. How we show ourselves to people can impact how we are viewed. There’s no doubt that work and play increasingly occur online, and that success in college and beyond requires an expert grasp of digital life and social media. As a powerful and clear voice on personal branding, Stacey will educate, inspire and empower the audience with new insights - including, a three-tiered roadmap inclusive of tools to identify, hone, and broadcast one’s strengths, interests and achievements. At first I wanted to argue with this, how we need to stop worrying about what others say about us, but maybe the brand we need to live up to, is the brand that will make us proud of who we are.
Exactly Chris...it's about being our best selves....social media, digital footprints like it or not has created a need for us to do this...Enjoy the day!

Our names can affect a lot, I am American but when people see my name I get called a lot of things other than American. But I am not changing, it's what my parents called me, part of my heritage and brand.
I use to work for a Brand Experience group and I definitely agree with everything she's saying. However, I've noticed in the past year or so, that the need for a certain polished and honed brand isn't as needed anymore - now more than ever people want to see what's REAL. So I hope as we move forward with marketing ourselves, we be as authentic and transparent as we can be.
I hope most of what she's saying are becoming outdated, and I agree with you about being authentic
I'm so glad someone is having this conversation because there is SO MUCH in a name! Before you know anything else about them you can hear the name and form so many opinions or even just get a general sense of them based on how they say it... That's why it's so important to pick a good name for your child but ALSO to make sure they understand the value of the name and say it with pride.
I love your share! It should be a parent's goal that their kids will feel confident and proud to say their name rather than the alternative!!!
What a good talk and good advice, and delivered without arms flapping in a contorted way that some Teds are done. I enjoyed this!

I think it starts with how you feel about YOUR self. All we can do is focus on how we feel and our perception and hope that shines through for others.
I love the message within this because it speaks to the fact that we can rebrand at any age, that it's never too late to work towards a new version of yourself. I think that's something a lot of people could benefit from hearing.

Wow this hit home, I am a twin too, maternal. Hated growing up with adults thinking my sister and I were alike in every way, we aren't! My mom got us involved in different things, she knew the truth.

I never thought about the impact of a name in such depth. The fact that baby naming is now a lucrative business says a lot about our society.
I was very surprised to learn that baby naming was a "thing"...🙃
I can think of all the times I wish I had heard this before I did something I regretted.

Couldn't agree more, the ability to navigate social media and have a pristine digital image is so important these days. I don't think people understand that those on your friends list can see EVERYTHING you are doing, liking, discussing in the comments.... all of it comes up.

It is fascinating how our youth shapes us so much. All these experiences, intentional or not, leads to the person we are in this moment.

“What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet” I hope that the day is fast approaching when we no longer have to be worried about our "brand" or how we might be perceived, but instead celebrate each other for our kindness and ability to share and connect.
Yeah I'm frustrated seeing people vilified for something they did 20 years ago. People change and grow, learning from their mistakes!
I totally understand where you are coming from. And kindness and connecting are more important than ever in this global pandemic. I don't believe branding is going away so quickly...we just need to be self-aware and proactive. At the end of the day, we need to be our true selves. Enjoy the day and thanks for your comment!

I love Stacey's optimism and energy! As she said, it is NEVER too late to start. These days our name can so easily be remembered, might as well ensure we are doing our best not just just for ourselves but for our community, because that legacy within our name can inspire others :)

This really syncs up with my experiences, people will assume things about you based on your name so it's important to guide their assumptions in a direction that suits you!

I dated a twin once, and his brother was constantly trying to compete with him. I never quite understood as they both had such different interests and aspirations. I'm glad you realised that you are an individual, despite having a twin sister. This was a very well thought out talk. This lady has a knack for public speaking. She kept my attention the whole way through.
Hi Charlie. Thanks for sharing your story and thoughts. Twins are def competitive with each other bc they grow up being compared all their lives. Often, they tend to pick different areas to "excel" in....my sister was far more academic and I was more social...Enjoy the day!

The emphasis on starting to build a personal brand in high school seems like a game-changer for future success. Makes me wish I had focused on it sooner.

It's kind of fascinating the way this has changed and I think social media plays a huge part in it - your instagram is a reflection of who you are and if there isn't a strong sense of personality coming through as you scroll it's easy to get written off as boring or just not 'engaging' enough.

Yeah, I get this, the title is somewhat misleading to some it seems as people think this a quick fix. I think this talk is really about how you need to lead your life. With the realization that you are what you do.

This talk frightens me. Yes I understand it and the knowledge of the speaker, though I see how we have also commercialized our children while they search for their own identity.
Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I understand your fear. These days, we unfortunately don't have a choice but to put our best digital selves out there to succeed in life. I see children as a clean slate and parents need to encourage their individuality and stand back.

I've been hoping this age of social media would die off but it only seems to be getting more momentum. This woman is so right, there is so much that goes into a name now, a brand, how we carry ourselves and how we are perceived.

It's hard enough with just siblings, I can only imagine how difficult it would be for parents with twins - but then, I think of the development delay when children feel they are being compared, when they are not seen as an individual with their own wants and needs... It can take years for the brain to rewire! Clearly a lot of hard healing work has been done by this speaker :)

I was telling a nephew about this talk, and then needed to go back and watch again. All teenagers need to see this, it may change they way they look at what they do!
Your comment means the world to me! If it were up to me, I'd like to see high schools include a personal branding/digital leadership as part of their curriculum globally. I did find a school that actually has a course which is mandatory.
There's a lot of really valuable information in this talk... if we think about ourselves as a brand, something that can be carefully curated and maintained... I don't know there's something really empowering about that and I know it's in line with a lot of the like choose who you want to be kind of stuff but this is the first time I've heard it put in a way that makes sense.

I agree it is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Especially with how much we gauge of a person coming from social media, it's important to be curated, while maintaining authenticity, of course.

There's definitely a lot of advantages to personal branding, but I think it's important to maintain your authenticity, and that can be really hard to do depending on who you're trying to sell yourself to.

Great question Tara! Teens are motivated by "likes" and "follows" which causes great stress. Personal branding is not about "me, me, me" and endless selfies - - it's about how you can benefit others. So, rather than seek fame, teens need to showcase their "good fit" qualities to college admissions officers and employers and have an answer to "Why choose me?"

I wish parents actively worked towards this 'branding from birth' thing but in a way that seeks to encourage the development of a childs spirit and inner self. I think that's something the world is kind of lacking, the knowing that there's something shiny and powerful within us that needs a little help to be uncovered.
Great point. In my upcoming book, I have a chapter that focuses on Empathy. Important to develop that as well....and it is a learned skill...
What she says at 4:02 about how the best ones are honed makes me think about all that jungian philosophy, integrating your shadow to create the best version of yourself and such. Kinda glad to see the corporate world catching up!

When you look at personal brands from a business perspective it can sound a bit contrived. When you think about it from a personal perspective it makes more sense with a view from individual passion and purpose. The key is being you, not a version of the you think you are suppose to be. There is a very fine line in all of this.

This talk is great, I didn't know heaps about branding before I watched it but I definitely have a better understanding about why it's important
So appreciate!!! There are so many misperceptions about branding. A lot of people think of it as self-serving Me - Me - Me when in reality, it is the value that you add to others.
Having a goal and a vision for yourself is vital! If I could go back to younger me I would tell them to set a goal and put in the effort to make it happen!

What a flip on the view that students shouldn’t be so concerned with grades and more concerned with connections. Some of the top students I knew at school are now not ‘succeeding’ the way everyone anticipated, while the charismatic ones who did things their way are entrepreneurs and living super interesting lives.
Great insight! There's so much more to us than just grades. Some of the most successful people failed out of high school.

The DNA test twist at the end was unexpected but really drove home the point about individuality and personal branding, even for identical twins.

Personal branding, I get it because we have truly become the product.
A human first and foremost....but similar to a product, we all have attributes that we want to share with the world....
I am very mindful of what I post on social media, to the point that i use a pseudonym on my Facebook- I don't engage with it much, but friends and family happily post things and don't think about what others see on my timeline as a result. I don't want potential employers finding me and judging something I have no control over.
The high school personal branding strategy is something to think about.
Right? It's about getting an early start because this stuff is not innate....

Great question. First names can imply race, age, religion and more. We are prone to judge others - - and often without meeting them (unfortunately).
