I love the message within this because it speaks to the fact that we can rebrand at any age, that it's never too late to work towards a new version of yourself. I think that's something a lot of people could benefit from hearing.
I'm so glad someone is having this conversation because there is SO MUCH in a name! Before you know anything else about them you can hear the name and form so many opinions or even just get a general sense of them based on how they say it... That's why it's so important to pick a good name for your child but ALSO to make sure they understand the value of the name and say it with pride.
Loved these insights, why wouldn't you want to stand out and be memorable in all parts of life? If personal branding is something that does that then I'm all for it!
At first I wanted to argue with this, how we need to stop worrying about what others say about us, but maybe the brand we need to live up to, is the brand that will make us proud of who we are.
Exactly Chris...it's about being our best selves....social media, digital footprints like it or not has created a need for us to do this...Enjoy the day!
Couldn't agree more, the ability to navigate social media and have a pristine digital image is so important these days. I don't think people understand that those on your friends list can see EVERYTHING you are doing, liking, discussing in the comments.... all of it comes up.
I use to work for a Brand Experience group and I definitely agree with everything she's saying. However, I've noticed in the past year or so, that the need for a certain polished and honed brand isn't as needed anymore - now more than ever people want to see what's REAL. So I hope as we move forward with marketing ourselves, we be as authentic and transparent as we can be.
Our names can affect a lot, I am American but when people see my name I get called a lot of things other than American. But I am not changing, it's what my parents called me, part of my heritage and brand.
Important stuff! Especially these days when people are so quick to assume. Setting our offspring up for success when choosing their name is like the best head start you could give them I think
Okay this has really made me rethink my online presence and how other people who may not know me personally could be perceiving some of the things I post about

Lisa, thanks for sharing your twin story and good for your mom! ...I have an aunt that didn't even know our names and just called us "the twins".....Just brings home the point that we are all unique and should be recognized as such.
I've been hoping this age of social media would die off but it only seems to be getting more momentum. This woman is so right, there is so much that goes into a name now, a brand, how we carry ourselves and how we are perceived.
The emphasis on starting to build a personal brand in high school seems like a game-changer for future success. Makes me wish I had focused on it sooner.
I like this idea and what's she's talking about. It's like being actively aware of how you're turning up in the world, what's more important than that?
It's kind of fascinating the way this has changed and I think social media plays a huge part in it - your instagram is a reflection of who you are and if there isn't a strong sense of personality coming through as you scroll it's easy to get written off as boring or just not 'engaging' enough.

I'm glad you realised that you are an individual, despite having a twin sister. This was a very well thought out talk. This lady has a knack for public speaking. She kept my attention the whole way through.
Hi Charlie. Thanks for sharing your story and thoughts. Twins are def competitive with each other bc they grow up being compared all their lives. Often, they tend to pick different areas to "excel" in....my sister was far more academic and I was more social...Enjoy the day!
So appreciate!!! There are so many misperceptions about branding. A lot of people think of it as self-serving Me - Me - Me when in reality, it is the value that you add to others.
It's hard enough with just siblings, I can only imagine how difficult it would be for parents with twins - but then, I think of the development delay when children feel they are being compared, when they are not seen as an individual with their own wants and needs... It can take years for the brain to rewire! Clearly a lot of hard healing work has been done by this speaker :)
I agree it is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Especially with how much we gauge of a person coming from social media, it's important to be curated, while maintaining authenticity, of course.
Very interesting perspective... Between all these different platforms we're meant to be broadcasting ourselves across in order to be professionally, or even socially relevant...This talk makes a lot of sense and it making me think of the social media world quite differently. Thank you.

I never thought about the impact of a name in such depth. The fact that baby naming is now a lucrative business says a lot about our society.

What an awesome topic for a ted talk, I wish I could have shown my teenagers a few years ago before they started making fools of themselves publicly.
Thanks BJ. Never too late:)
I love this new wellness world of being yourself, bring your wholeself to work. No no, not that self, the self that works the way we want you to. I think I need a break from life, I'm feeling pretty pessimistic.
I hear what you are saying but this is really about bringing your authentic "best" self to the world
Personal brands and be the head marketer for the brand called you. Me, Inc. Such an interesting talk.
Thanks Raquel. So glad you enjoyed it!
As someone who shared a name with FOUR OTHER PEOPLE all throughout school hahaha yes I can confirm it is very important to 'build a personal brand' although that wasn't what it was called back then
John is def one of the most popular boy names (in the English-speaking world) of all time! But there is only ONE you!
food for thought here for sure. i can't decide if i want to embrace it or turn my nose up at it. in saying that, i have a terrible name and i hate marketing. but... i definitely got hooked watching Stacy tell her whole story. what a memorizing woman.
Thanks Raini. I totally get that not everybody is a fan of marketing....but appreciate your openness and kind words
