    I see @Tyleredwards and some other happy Komodo fun and of course I had to be here as well, lol. Great video, man and loved that intro too. I know this is an old one, but I try to keep learning about this machine. I currently use the bmpcc 6k Pro and I'm. happy with it, but the more I watch videos about the RED Komodo the more I want it, so I just have to save some 💶 and make the move. Thanks and congratulations!

    I like the compare video of the Komodo vs Canon C70. The image was so close. But with all the "extras" on the Canon... I'll stay with my C70. Komodo would be a close second especially since I have all RF lenses and Canon Batteries.

    Important to know if you're shooting in the cold: The Red Komodo operating range is 0-40 degrees Celsius (that's 32-104 Fahrenheit).
    My Komodo did not record at cold temperatures (was shooting Snowy Owls in the Canadian winter, and the trip was a disaster).
    The Canon R5 had no problems whatsoever, but I love the RED look and it was very disappointing.
    Was misled by media reports of the Komodo being tested in harsh winter conditions. Always read the fine print before buying. Media reviews and ads are just not good enough.

    • @pauleporterdp
      @pauleporterdp  2 роки тому

      Wow ok how many degrees it had at that time?

    • @dipanka
      @dipanka 2 роки тому

      @@pauleporterdp Well, it was quite cold, -16C, but I've shot with the Red Raven without problems at -20C. The V mount battery and REDMAG cards are more robust I guess, and the larger brains generate more heat. The Komodo generates very little heat.

      I am probably waiting for komodo v2 becayse I recently biught a7siii, maybe they will have fixed the issue by then

  • @gordonhatusupy2224
    @gordonhatusupy2224 3 роки тому +3

    Just because there already is so much confusion out there. The sdi issue has nothing to do with the state of the komodo. You need to have battery / power connected to both your sdi accessories and camera before connecting the sdi cable or removing the cable + have your sdi accessory turned on. Also this has nothing to do with the Komodo, it happens with Arri's and other cameras with SDI as well.

      Wait so I knew i needed to have them both powered on before connecting. But I need to disconnect them with both of them having the power on as well? I normally just power down the camera all together along before disconnecting? Have I been doing this wrong?

    • @gordonhatusupy2224
      @gordonhatusupy2224 3 роки тому +1

      @@DickieisSupaCool Leave the monitor on and then disconnect the cable. Preferably from the camera side. Wether the camera is on or off doesn't matter as long as batteries/power is connected.

    • @vinnieRice
      @vinnieRice 3 роки тому +2

      Yep. It's a problem for all cameras with 12G SDI connections. The BNC was not designed for the amount of data being pushed now and the electronics are very delicate. Use 12G cables (the central pin is slightly smaller and the cable construction is different). The danger comes with making and breaking power connections. It's possible for power and battery connectors (particularly DTAP) to connect the +ve before the -ve/earth and just for an instant the camera can earth via any BNC connection. This is what hurts the electronics. Just ALWAYS disconnect the camera side SDI BNC when changing batteries, plugging in DTAPs or other power cables. Powering things on or off should NOT be a problem if everything is connected. There was a problem on the first Komodo run because people were using standard BNC connections. The larger centre pin was stretching the centre hole on the 12G SDI BNC connector on the camera. This meant that occasional shorts were possible. RED have strengthened the central BNC receiver hole to alleviate that but you should ALWAYS use 12G specific BNC cables. Please correct if I have made any errors.

      @@gordonhatusupy2224 Hi, I don't use V mount and never disconnect any cable while the camera is on. I only do that when I need to pack it in a bag. At which point, the camera and monitor are already off. Does it matter then in which order I power off the monitor or the Komodo?
      Another thing is hot swapping batteries. I don't think it has any effect on the sdi port, right?
      Last question is when the monitor's battery runs out, then I should disconnect the sdi first, change battery, reconnect the sdi, and only then turn the monitor back on right?
      Thank you very much for answering these questions.

    wait what? SDI ports break when you don't unplug the cable? It also doesn't have IRC filters? geez

    • @pauleporterdp
      @pauleporterdp  2 роки тому

      Due to the high voltage when powering on and off can cause a „fried“ sdi port. This is especially important when using v Mount or ac power.
      It has IR Cut filters but when using higher ND above 6 Stops it lets some IR through. Not nearly as bad as bmpcc but something to be aware of.

      @@dna8269 the limited frame rate on the Komodo is a deal killer. The whole thing ridged up is about 10k and all of that for 40fps? I do commercial work and short films so I need something that can do both. The bmpcc 4k gives me that balance with a good range and it only cost $1500. Blackmagic will release a new camera with the same specs as the Komodo but with higher frame rates and global shutter for about 5k within the next few months. The Komodo is a good camera but is not worth 5k.
