    My Komodo comes today. (looks out the window for the Fedex truck)
    I've rented one a few times. and I own a pocket 6k pro, I've also shot on the URSA.
    The image is better that's no doubt. But the main thing I'd say that made me pull the trigger is the ease of getting that better image, if that makes sense.
    You can make a pocket 6k look damn near indistinguishable from the RED. but it takes a ton of effort both in lighting on set and in post. As a small production team. I don't have the energy or time on my shoots to do that, but I still want the Cinema look. So I bought the RED.

      Totally! My next vid, covering my first impressions mentions that. It just looks gorgeous straight out of cam. Whereas my existing cams take a lot of massaging to get there. I was just really surprised about how easy Red Raw is to work with.
      Good luck with your Komodo and share some footage when you get chance!

    Thanks for the great video!
    I’ve had my Komodo for about a month and even being new to RED I am surprised how easy it is to use and *dang* the out-of-the-camera image just blows my mind every time I throw it in the timeline. First 5 minutes goes by just staring the picture. LOL. And that RED raw. Absolutely amazing!
    Though, coming from R5 there are a few hiccups: slow bootup time, black shading and not great autofocus make it a bit less effortless to just quickly shoot something and move on. You need to be prepared, and master manual focus. But, once you get used to this and know what you are dealing with, it’s not a big deal…remembering the prize that’s waiting for you on the editing table. 😎
    Thanks again, looking forward to your next videos!

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 роки тому +2

      Yes! I'll be covering some of this in my next vid - looking at my first impressions after using the Komodo!
      In terms of black shading - you can probably get away with not doing this every single time so long as you're operating within a similar temperature condition to when you originally calibrated - although always best to do it if you can. The T/E indicators will let you know when you definitely have to black-shade / calibrate - if they're green you're probably okay - if yellow or RED definitely black-shade. Also - if you boot-up, these will usually start off as red or yellow but if you let the camera warm up, they should turn green (if you're in a similar temp. range).
      Autofocus - I can see why you'd be missing Canon's excellent AF - to be fair it's not something I've worked with previously, so any AF on the Komodo is a bonus to me - but I mostly use manual focus cine lenses.
      Either way - the footage I've been getting after first use is stunning, so excited to move this into my professional production work.

    I've had mine since October and I love it. I simply love shooting with this camera. It's so small and the R3D files play smoother than the c70 files which is bananas. What ever you point this camera at will look so nice.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 роки тому

      Yeah totally agree. I considered the C70 when looking for what to upgrade to, but when I saw that the red raw files played back pretty smoothly + the lovely form factor I was convinced to get one.
      This camera is so fun to shoot with and can be stripped back to an insane small size.

    Hi Ed. Awesome content. Subscribed. How do you deal with noise reduction? I have a M1 mac and NR takes forever. You shoot raw like and a lot of clips means you have to have some kind of system to overcome it. Thanks.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Рік тому

      I've gotten a bit better at working with the camera which has helped reduce noise capture in cam - so in lower light situations I try to shoot at a lower ISO and try to add more light to the scene where possible - previously I was just shooting everything at ISO 800. If it's not practical to shoot at a lower ISO - I add a NR node as the first node in DR - but I just disable it until I'm ready to export. It can add time to your export - but it's never been that crazy. Since I've got better at working with the cam I'm using NR less and less now.

    Dope. On the fence about the Komodo mainly due to not trusting every review on the camera and its workflow. I love the Red look. Okay, straight to my questions:
    Is it easy to use in Final Cut?
    Did you feel the need to upgrade your PC at all?
    What is something you don't particularly like about it?

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 роки тому +1

      I guess main questions are - what sort of work do you shoot? What sort of turn around times do you have - are you already spending time grading footage?
      What other camera systems are you looking at?
      Personally - I think it integrates well with FCPX - I'm on a 13" M1 2020 MBP - it's not super buttery fast, but it handles the footage well - it slows down once you get into grading. But am able to edit fine. In all honesty - I will likely upgrade my main machine in the next year, but that's not particularly Komodo related, I've just ended up editing from this laptop as my old iMac died - waiting for the M2 chip to roll out across the apple line (I'll either pick up a cheaper M1 Max or check out the M2)
      Dislikes - no internal NDs. Laggy touch screen. Single SDI port. Limited audio IO. Slightly longer boot up time than my current camera. I guess boot up time isn't super quick - but it's not a huge issue for me personally.
      My next "first impressions" vid will address a lot of this. I need to rack up some more time in professional settings to really get a feel for the camera though - so a more nuanced review will come down the line.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 роки тому

      I would also take every Komodo vid (myself included) with a pinch of salt - everyone's needs are different and everyone will only be showing off their best footage - not all the shots they messed up or messed up the exposure.
      My Komodo vids are put out with very limited use - I will put out more nuanced vids once I've properly put the camera through its paces on professional work - that's why I'm not titling any of these vids as a "review" - that will probably come in 3-6 months time!

    • @JAXTWIN
      @JAXTWIN 2 роки тому +1

      @@EdProsser Currently, I mainly shoot UA-cam videos (vlogs, reviews, etc) and some promos videos for IG. Turnaround time is flexible since I'm picking and choosing which projects to take on. Usually, 1-3 day turnarounds for UA-cam videos. I use FCPX as well and grade a lot of my footage, depending on the need. My machine is the 2019 Macbook Pro 16gb. I think that the one thing I won't like it the audio sync in post. I like how the C70 and the FX6 have the XLR built in or available and will have a hard time since my audio is waaaaaay better now. Definitely, will wait to hear your thoughts later on it.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 роки тому

      @@JAXTWIN I'd definitely download the sample footage from the RED website and just have a play around in FCPX on your machine - get a feel for how it performs and how raw works. Bare in mind that compressed media from the C70 & FX6 will also be taxing on your system. You also have the option of shooting in Pro Res on the Komodo as well - which obviously performs very well - this is also only 4K which might be better for vlogs - esp. if you're able to light and properly expose.
      I'm shooting my Vlogs on the LUMIX S5 and don't plan to use the Komodo for these.
      In my professional work a lot of my projects record sound external to the camera so it's not a HUGE issue but I'm also keeping my EVA1 for instances where I need an all-in-one solution. I'm going to purchase the Zoom F3 to rig to my Komodo for professional audio - sync'ing in post is an additional step but it's not super time consuming.

    • @BrandonTalbot
      @BrandonTalbot 2 роки тому +1

      Jax, yes super easy in FCP. The 6k raw files play smoother than my C70 files (most)
      High frame rates were initially a big turn off but I've been shooting 50fps and I love it. So not a big deal for me any more.
      Sometimes the touch screen isn't very responsive.
      Doesn't have built in ND's
      But for me the pros far, FAR outlay the cons. For me this is my favorite camera (I've got a R5, C70, BMPCC 6kPro, Fujis)
      *Oh and the audio preamps aren't great.

    Just curious. What kind of clients will only want red?

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 роки тому

      Agency clients often request a camera type, a lot of these clients tend to be familiar with either RED or Arri and they often don't have much awareness beyond that. Usually they associate these as being higher end systems and working well in post so they request them time and time again. I directed a project recently where they requested an Alexa Mini straight away - they rejected an FX9 as they hadn't heard of it (!).
      Or it might be the case you're shooting something that is part of a larger project shot on a certain camera system. Happens a lot in broadcast or docs.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah it's deffo not a great buy if you need those higher fps - which frame rates do you use?
      I've not noticed any issues between 25-50 fps or 60 fps. I've found the 40fps at 6K is really nice to work with and 48fps at 5K works well for me. 60 fps at 4K with a speedbooster also works great - I generally don't need to go above 50 fps and I think 40-48 will work just as good for me.
      Above that then yeah, granted - you'll probably experience more noise - but you should be de-noising this footage as standard anyway.

      Thanks Samein - I'm planning to do one soon. Red have a collection of Rec.709 LUTs with diff contrast curves which I'd recommend - downloading.
      Importing wise it'll depend on your editor. Red raw files tend to be split across several files but your editor should see them as a single file. FCPX requires a plugin to see the files (from Red website). Then it's just standard import.
      You can also use the Red Cine-x pro software to prep and modify your raw files.

    All the reasons you stated pretty much say that you would equally just as good with the blackmagic pocket series .there's nothing you ever said which the other brands don't have. The only reason to go with a komodo is the global shutter and the cube form factor (which looks cool).
    There's nothing wrong with saying I wanted to spend 10k to have a cube camera. :D Skin rendering, raw, frames , and speedboosters are the same on all other cameras. The Raw codec is cool aswell. but you can 99% match the image between blackmagics and komodos.
    So. Ed.. don't delude yourself on why you have gear syndrome and wanna look cooll . If you had the money laying around and wantede to spend them.. there's nothing wrong with that

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 роки тому +3

      Haha, okay! I mean there's totally an element of that with any purchase! But generally, My EVA1 is was in need of an upgrade, I'd paid it off and made money off it - so was ready to upgrade :) - and I spent a long time on the decision.
      However, I'm not sure how getting the Komodo makes me look cool - a camera is a tool for me to use on a weekly basis so I was choosing the right tool for me (my girlfriend can totally confirm that it doesn't make me look cool)
      I think whichever camera I would have purchased I'd be spending in the region of £8-10K - I spent roughly that on my original EVA1 and it was what I had budgeted and saved for my next camera purchase.
      I was originally hoping BMD would announce a Cube camera at NAB - but that didn't happen. I hate the form factor of the Pocket Cameras - so I'd never pick one of those up for my full time camera - even if the image is fantastic.
      I also seriously considered the URSA 12K as a camera, but with a slipped disc in my back, it's just too heavy to work with for me.
      AND... sure you can make any camera look like any other camera, but I think the point is that I don't want to be spending hours in post doing that - the Komodo footage comes out of the camera looking great, and I'm really happy with that.
      I've also worked on a lot of shoots recently where the client has requested either an ARRI or a RED, never a BMD or a Sony (or my EVA1) - so that also factored in.
      As mentioned, the BS1H really sold me on the Cube form factor - but it wasn't the right camera for me. I don't really know what you mean when you say "it looks cool" it's just a box shape?
      The Komodo was really nice to shoot with, it's a great form factor and I think it's one of the best box cameras on the market.
      After considering which camera would work best and sit with me for the next 4-5 years (as my EVA1 did) - the Komodo seemed like a sensible investment.
      It sounds like it's not the right camera for you, that's totally fine, but we all have different preferences :)

      Skin tones look great. Some people spend crazy amounts just for a certain look. Look at Leica aficionados. 8k for a camera they love using is nothing then you add on 3k+ lenses. No one has to justify what camera they choose. That’s personal as camera are personal. Some videographers photographers I swear think more like accountants then artist.
