was sat in the lounge of the Everard Hotel, London 1988 and these 4 cocky guys from Liverpool walked in and asked me if I wanted to hear their music. I said yeh but wasn't expecting much, they sat down with acoustic guitars and played a few songs. My mind was totally blown with their energy and 60's pop style melodies. They said they've got their first album coming out soon. Bloody 'ell I couldn't believe they would turn out to be The La's.

We need another band like the La’s nowadays, all you need is straightforward melodies/harmonies, basic chords and most importantly rhythm and you’ll be great. I hope some young lads somewhere understand that and bring us more music like this.

Timing is crucial in the music business. If The La's had come out in the mid 90's BritPop era they would've been HUGE!!!!!!! Unfortunately the 80's weren't ready for a band of this depth & quality. They were definitely ahead of their time.

Different production than the L.P. What a brilliant debut single. The La's were like none other. They get lumped in with The Stone Roses and Oasis, but they were leagues ahead both sonically and lyrically. Lee Mavers was set to be my generation's Dylan...then he disappeared. Crazy talent from these fellas.

Depends what you mean by disappeared? I used to see Lee regularly when I still lived in Liverpool. The last time I saw him, he was pushing his kid thru town in a pram, and stopped and spoke to him. When I asked him what he was up to, he said nothing much, a royalty cheque (shows how how long ago it was) plopped on his mat each month so he was comfortable. There She Goes gets massive airplay and has been in a couple of films so I guess he probably doesn't need to do much.

Let’s just clear this one issue up...
The La’s were never ‘underrated’. Never. They were and still are always highly rated. The word/phrase we are looking for here is ‘under-publicised’.
If you take a step back and think about all the music/bands/films etc.. that you think is underrated.... they’re really not are they. Whenever they are mentioned/publicised, they are always highly rated. Just under-publicised or if you like, overlooked.
The phrase underrated is thrown around like confetti is usually used out of context.

Can't stop listening to this song!!...Saw Lee Mavers playing this and There She Goes as a Guest of Pete Doherty at the Troxy
    in 2009!
Pete Doherty wanted these to re-form and support the Libertines at Hyde Park
These are also Noel Gallagher's fave band!

+jaye see hahaa,,gallagher most likely doin cartwheels due to the fact that mavers was a perfectionist recluse so he(they,,the la's) sadly only put out what they did,,however if mavers and co continued as normal then bland old oasis wouldn't av got a look in,,more talent in mavers' discarded foreskin,(,if he were jewish) than in both of those gallagher brothers

@@shipyard6276 I'm looking the La's deluxe edition, and the "Andy MacDonald version", although very similar, doesn't have the drums intro, instead a intro with only acoustic guitar riff. I personally don't like the Mike Hedges version of this song [edit] Although I've read Mavers preferes his version of the album(?)[/edit] . This exactly version (with less reverb in the voice) I've found only in the album "Callin' All" under a name "Way Out (Newer Version)".

it's amazing that no one in the 90's begged him to do some more what a waste I'm sure he had more in him but to be honest the LA's album is enough. For the longest time I thought he died what a songwriter this is quality Brit pop 5 years earlier. I liked cast and I knew but sorry Powers not as good as The La's great band great name
